  1. I don't know BK very well, I'm just wondering if anybody can recommend an area I should look into.

I want to live in what in western terms would be descibed as an area for"lively young professionals" The suburbs with the kids is just so not me. Really NOT looking for hi-so, just middle class. I do need great transport links, so probably BTS, lively bars, restaurants within a 20 minute walking distance would be great. A big supermarket would be ideal. I love jogging but have resigned myself to joggin in the gym, but if the area was ok for jogging, even at 6am that would be wonderful.

I saw around part of Lumpini park and though it was wonderful it had no sense of community for me. The social separateness that money seems to bring!

I've never lived in a capital city before and guess I may have false hopes (especially on my budget :o but Bangkok seems to offer a lot, for me, if I can find the right living arrangments. Any suggestions on where to live are warmly received.

Oh and final question. The all important cost.

How much would a 60m2 new apartment in a really good location (must be walkable to the BTS) cost in the area of your choice to either buy or rent?

    www.mrroomfinder.com could be some help.

  2. The situation:

I have a job offer in Hong Kong.

They need a copy of my degree certificate for the Visa application.

However, my University, in it's infinite wisdom, back in the Eighties, issued degree certificates in Latin.

It seems I need a certified translation in either Chinese or English of the degree Certificate...

Anybody know anywhere in Bangkok (or Singapore/Hong Kong) that does certified Latin to English translations?

(I did Latin at school, so I know what it says, but I can't certify a translation myself).

Would notarization suffice? You do the translation, and then take an oath that it is what it says it is. BKK Post often has ads for notary service.----I am a teacher with Latin state certification, but currently on my own, not attached to any institution.

  3. This thread is a demonstration in itself of the monkey-mind, jumping from branch to branch! The posts about diet and Buddhist hierarchy and zen-like gnomic utterances are valuable, and I'm sure merit their own threads. I'm ducking out for a while, and would like to thank those who enlarged upon and continued the original enquiry, which continues to interest me. I would also appreciate any comments to my blog, should anyone have any to make, where I shall continue to write in the spirit of total ignorance and fascination.

    Thanks again.

It is in the nature of time that the purity of the teaching is subject to increasing decay the farther one gets from the timeframe of the great teacher. Nature seems to make up for this by producing another great teacher or avatar when things have hit a low point. All religions go thru the dissolution of the purity of their original teaching..yet ever with us within, is our Higher Self, competing for our attention to its wisdom with outside distractions, and dependent upon the clarity of our inner hearing. Even great spiritual teachers must groan when their spiritual teachings are turned into a religion, the organization of which stifles, hinders, blocks one's indivualized free will choice to evolve to the Highest. Beyond even religion and philosophy is lifestyle, spontaneously, freely, living the teachings, with no-mind.

  4. "There seems to be only one place in Bangkok where safe deposit boxes are readily available and not connected to hardly justifiable conditions: the Charn Issara Tower on 942 Rama IV Road, close to the intersection with Silom Road (Tel 234-2850, Ext 120).

There, safe deposit boxes can be rented even for short periods of time, such as one or three months. Boxes are available with a height of 9, 12, 18 and 30 centimeters (uniform width of 31.5 centimeters). Depending on the size, the costs are 210 to 380 Baht for 1 month, 330 to 660 Baht for 3 months, 550 to 1,230 Baht for 6 months, 800 to 1,780 Baht for 9 months and 1,000 to 2,300 Baht for 1 year.

Aside from the rent, there is an initial refundable key deposit to be paid in the amount of 3,000 Baht. The boxes are accessible 10:00-20:00 on weekdays, 10:00-18:00 on Sundays and holidays."

    From Asiatour.com.

I have used this location several times in the past, although not for several years.

Also, CB Lockers Ltd at Gems Tower Bldg.< Charoen Krung Rd.----02 267 4622. More expensive. Can walk from Saphan Taksin BTS if you like to inhalethe effluvia from the traffic.

  5. Have seen some great Buddhist stuff that I have not seen anywhere else, at Kinokuniya, 3rd fl., Siam Paragon. Also hear you can leave your passport (I do not recommend that) at Wat Bowonniwet when you borrow. Wat Mahathat would be more liberal if they lend. Of course, there are second-hand bookstores--Khaosan Rd. and other places--do not know how much they have.

  6. It could well be contraction of iliopsoa muscle involvement which is below gluteals and hard to palpate (massage) - there are stretches which can be undertaken to assist - talk to an osteopath, chiropractor or personal trainer on exercise involving the psoas muscle.

you mean probably piriformis muscle, which is on the buttock (iliopsoas muscles are on the front of the body, deep on the side of the belly).

indeed, in some 15% of population the sciatic nerve runs through the middle of the piriformis muscle, and if that muscle is tense, it will press and irritate the nerve - hence sciatica.

it is possible to massage piriformis and iliopsoas muscles, but commonly they are not dealt during the treatment by an avarege therapist - more likely by the osteopath/chiro/fizjo, after describing your symptoms.

regulart treatments and even more regular stretches/exercises should bring, at least, some relieve of pain - try it while waiting for MRI scan. If it works, it means that it's muscular rather than problems with the spine.

GENERAL REPLY: You might check to see that your back pockets are empty. It has worked for some that symptoms diasapear upon use of this simple "technique". Chok dee!

  7. Oldfield, I would be interested in your contacts in Udon.. Thanks.

There are lots of jobs here in Udon thani if you don't mind relocating.

I know of half a dozen or so government schools at least who are looking for one or two teachers each. they are paying around 30,000 baht per month (and some even throw in an apartment on-site for free).

Furthermore, you don't need a degree for some of these schools as they pretty much write their own tl's, so they don't have to deal with the moe.

If you want to earn more there are p/t jobs at private schools paying 300b per hour also available.

If anyone is interested I have several contacts who can point you in the right direction.
