  1. Actually Patters has everything I need, and living on the darkside/ East is very good. I would suggest that it might be easier to name things that are legal that you cannot do in Patters. I dont see anybody doing any rock climbing for instance (not that I would want to!)

  2. What if I wanted 'peace, quiet and sanity', though? How much of a drive would that be?

    About 15 minutes to Jomtien...:)

another 15 minutes and you are in Bang Saray...zzzzzz :D

or 15 minutes east to Maprachan lake

  3. @ IO, agreed, a potential difference is possible, but there is a UK regulation against it, I do not have my UK regs book to hand, but I will make some enquires. From memory I think that you could possibly introduce an earth fault that otherwise was not there. Myself I think I would bond them together though. Maybe Crossy can a little more input on this.

reason for edit, another post was posted before I had time to finish

  4. not really a limit as such, what is important here is that you get a good external earth reading between 1 and 10 ohms ideally, and remember the further away you go with the rod, then the bigger the size of cable.

If you pm me with the details of your circuit, I will give exact sizes

ie size of load, size of cable

  5. ^ It sounds like you had a direct short between phase and neutral, probably on one of the elements, thats why the MCB tripped, if it was an earth fault then the in built ELCB should have operated on the shower. Sounds like they both tripped, which is good.

Just because your house has 3 wires with an earth, the earth still needs to be good quality, whether supplied by the PEA (unlikely) or an earth rod, and indeed if you have only protection by MCB's then the earth needs to be tested to make sure that reading is LOW enough, in order for the MCB's to trip in time, if you have a high value earth then under phase to earth fault conditions your MCB's will not rip in time to protect against electric shock.
