  1. Two points from me IMO:

    1. Insurance companies have to draw the line somewhere. I think everyone can understand this point. I know it's easy to think, "Oh, they have lots of money so they should pay". They would be out of business in no time. I'm sure the person at the insurance company wasn't happy to have to say no but everything was spelled out in the contract. Should insurance companies have some kind of 'sympathy meter', and if a case is sad enough then they will pay even though they don't have to? Of course this is horrible and tragic but it doesn't mean all sense and logic (and policy guidelines) should be thrown out the window.

    2. I do see the occasional tourist driving like crap. But what I see way much more are young Thai kids hauling ass on their motorbikes. Especially young males. I see kids that look as young as 10 or 11! I know they haven't had any kind of "Bike Test". And of course no helmet. Any of the emergency rooms will tell you they get more young Thai males in for motorbike accidents by far than tourists. Usually tourists are driving fairly slow so they can enjoy their new vacation "scenery".

  2. Surat governor rejects cityhood, plan for 2nd airport revived, pilot being charged, man killed at Thai bar, woman arrested trying to flee Samui for bad checks, new forest land scam uncovered, Samui tourism income to reach B200m, all the money raised for footballer Matt Hampson, Koh Tao guests complaining about loud music, how tourist can get a tax refund, ban on driving while talking on cell phone, other news about Thailand in general, a review of a great spa for everyone including locals to go to, a letter to Samui Express about the filthy beaches, a story about the developer who had The Peak, a new hotel opening, birdwatching in Thailand, a story about traveling to India, news about how more Thais are beginning to travel overseas, how to control diabetes, a story about the abuse in Burma, some sports stories, a comics page, an astrology page, 2 sudoko puzzles, a crossword puzzle, classifieds, movie reviews, a touching story about a place where you can take the family and have a BBQ while the kids play in a playground, a bar that shows classic movies, a story about the Italian ambassador's visit to Samui, a story on Isan food, a story about how fireworks and alcohol don't mix, how Koh Phangan is getting more and more Asian tourists and how an art show went (isn't everyone always complaining about no culture here?)

I dunno, seems like quite a bit of information to me and some pretty decent articles too for just 20 baht.

Oh, and the adverts to let people know what's to do and what's for sale around the island.

  3. And how is that accomplished? And why is it better?

Many modem/routers and routers give the possibility to assign a mac address of a network card to a LAN ip- address. It takes care that the computers, connecting to the modem/router, always will have the same LAN IP address.

The static DHCP-table in my router is for example

    mac address IP Address hostname

    xx:xx:xx:xx:xx 192.168.1.100 desktop

    xx:xx:xx:xx:xx 192.168.1.101 laptop lan

    xx:xx:xx:xx:xx 192.168.1.102 laptop wireless

You can also achieve that by turning the DHCP in the router off and set these ip addresses manually at each computer that is using the modem/router. In XP you do that by network connections > properties > internet protocol (TCP/IP)

    Petch01

OK but why is this better than using port-forwarding? Only because you would be guarenteed the same IP address each time?

  4. What torrent software are you using OP?

I use Azureus and love it! There is a NAT/Firewall test that tells you if you have port forwarding set-up correctly on your router.

As my ip address changes when I log on, I have to go into Azureus and tell it what port to listen to.

Although, sometimes when the wrong port is being used it still pulls down relatively fast, but it gets faster after I put in the right port #.

Now that I have kicked everyone off my router, my ip address stays the same so I don't have to reconfig anything anymore. Someone had "cracked" my very hard password (samui). What the heck was I thinking? "Samui"...good password, not! Maybe I should have used "password" for my password. Genius!

Even better to turn off DHCP and use fixed IP-adress.

And how is that accomplished? And why is it better?

  6. Just great, from what looked like an answer (Yes, use it) to confusion now (don't use if have carburetter).

I'm fairly certain well over 90% of the bikes in Thailand have carburetters. (This is my unscientific estimate of course based on what I don't know.)

Why not just have someone who speaks Thai ask a motorbike repairman.

  7. Everyone is forgetting dogs and cats. I had a dog run strait into my front wheel on a motorbike and it was only by the grace of God and me getting my foot down that stopped from laying it down. It would have been bad. The animals are very unpredictable.

I now wear a helmet and drive very defensively and do not speed. Those things along make my trips anywhere much safer.

  8. Does anyone have the contact info. for the Malaysian guys who take of the visas for you in Penang? I know there are 2 places and eac place has Malaysian guys.

I am talking about the guys on the right. If you are looking at their shops (which are next to each other) the guys on the right are the ones I'm talking about.

If you've been there you know what I'm trying to say.

Anyway, any info. would be appreciated.

  9. Could someone bring me some bottled water from Bangkok. It is cheaper there. :o

sorry but nobody will be able to. I was having my friend bring me a can of compressed air to clean my computer out but BKK Airways confiscated it so the money paid for it goes "poof".

Same with liquids so you might have to smuggle the water in.

  10. We ate at the new Chinese place called Heng on the main road near Big C last night.

Fantastic is all I can say. The prawns were huge and they keep them alive in a tank until ready to cook.

I have eaten at Jing a few times and thought it was good but now I am a devotee to Heng. Jing was good because it was the only place to get Chinese but if you like Chinese food try Heng and judge for yourself

  11. Hey Thanks! Kinokuniya has the book I want.

the only problem I have is shipping and then crossing my fingers that the book gets here. I have had packages go missing and so have other people. it's a real crap shoot. That's why I wanted someone to physically bring me one. I have a friend going to BKK this weekend and maybe he can get it for me at the their store.

    Thanks again.

  12. Hello,

I am in need of a book titled The Oxford A-Z of English Usage. I don't think there is anyway to get it here without paying outrages shipping fees. If anyone reading this is coming to Koh Samui in the near future and would like to help me out by getting the book and bringing it to me, it would most greatly be appreciated!

If you can, please PM me.

Thanks a million in advance. :o

  13. I went to Tesco and can not find any compressed air. I found plenty of spray cleaners that shoot out a foam that claim to be safe for spraying inside a PC.

I really lucked out though. It just so happens that a friend of mine was in BKK. I called him and he went and got the exact power cord I need for my laptop as well as a can of compressed air! He returns to Samui tomorrow so I think I'm saved, but it just goes to show that Samui is really lacking in critical computer supplies. I wish someone would open a big electronics store here.

Thanks for everyone's help. Now I have to take my laptop apart, clean it, put it back together and then pray that it still works.

  14. Thanks for this info. My PC is in need of a service as the temps are rising. I can see alot of dust

inside so I'm going to get to work on it.

Do you know where I can find a power cord and supply for a compaq presario laptop on the island. I have

not used mine for a while and when I try and start it up now, nothing happens. I can feel a little heat when touching

the power supply, but the green power light on the laptop does not come on as usual and I can not turn on the laptop

    at all?

    Many Thanks

    Noodles,

You might can use the generic power cord that I had initialy bought from My Computer in Chaweng just before (north side) the post office on main ring road. It gives you the ability to set different voltage levels. Be sure and check before you buy if it will work with your Presario. Determine what your power reuirments are and then see if that new cord can deliver it. He asked 1200 and I paid 1000 for it.
