    All questions already answered.

  2. Hi,

I am visiting Bangkok this July. I am coming from Australia. I would like to know how far is the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport is from Bangkok bus station. I am planning to go to Phuket from Bangkok through bus. So please also suggest me if there are any deluxe buses available to Phuket from Bangkok after 8 PM. Your reply is appreciated as I can plan my trip accordingly.

    Thanks,

Do yourself a favour and take a flight.

    www.airasia.com

    8 times per day BKK-HKT.

You can get tickets already for 1600-2000 Baht

If you insist on the bus:

You have to go to the Southern Bus terminal.

Estimated distance from the airport: 50km (you have to cross the river)

    No buses after 8pm.

Travel time to Phuket: 10-12 hrs

    Price: approx. 700-900 Baht

    Google around a bit.

    There is plenty of information

    Cheers

PS. Bus prices are one-way, air ticket round-trip !

    PPS.

The Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Taling Chan สายใต้ตลิ่งชัน) is now located on Phutthamonthon Soi 1 in northern Thonburi.

Be sure the cabbie knows where to go, or you may end up at the old Southern Terminal (Sai Tai Mai), which stopped operating in late 2008.

Getting to the bus terminal is a bit of headache as public transport is limited. The easiest option is to take a taxi from the airport. (350-400 Baht?)

    Bus Timetable:

    Bangkok-Phuket, Fare: 1120 Baht, Class: A/C VIP Bus, Duration: 11.50 hrs, Departure 07.30, 17.30, 18.00, 18.30, 19.00

Be sure to double check everything before you travel. Things in Thailand can change very fast. :)

  3. I'm going to be moving to Bangkok in September. Having fast, reliable internet is crucial for my business. I last lived in Bangkok in 2006, and the quality of internet service was quite poor. I had 3 different ADSL lines, two from true and one from another provider, and some times all 3 lines were really slow...

Well now it's 3 years later, I'm hoping things have improved... does anyone have experience with ADSL in bangkok lately? What download speeds can one expect from international sites? I will want to have very fast (>1 mbit, prefer > 2 mbit) connectivity, with very reliable uptime.... I'm willing to pay for a dedicated leased line if necessary.

Are things doing better on the bandwidth front these days? Would anyone have a particular service provider to recommend, even expensive leased line services, I need to investigate and am willing to pay whatever is necessary to have fast, reliable international connectivity.

    Thanks-

    :):D:D:D:D:D:D:D:P:P

Better change your destination if you need speed and reliability.

    Internet here is a mess.

Sometimes it works ok, sometimes is simply out.

And this can last a few days.

The ISP's cap the bandwidth on international sites.

And high speed up-and downloads? Nope.

    Check out the forum.

You find plenty of infos and very annoyed posts.

  5. HI, was wondering if there are any decent hotels near Victory Monument? Say in the 2,000 baht range, with in room internet. Thanks in advance.

The Pullmann in Rang Nam Road.

    http://www.pullmanbangkokkingpower.com/

3 Min walk to Victory Monument BTS Station.

Perhaps a little more expensive then your 2.000 baht budget but if you google around I am sure u can find a good deal.

Try also www.painai.com. You might find a price around 2.500 baht/night.

    Good luck

Anybody has or had the same experience?

  7. Remember a while back they were saying wearing face masks were ineffective in protecting against swine flu?

Well, watching coverage of the outbreak in Australia, I see that all the healthcare workrers and airport personnel were wearing them.....

I predict a new fashion statement is on the way for Pattaya!

......heading to the Pharmacy to stock up! :D

People wear face masks to protect others and not themselves, as a general rule.

Do you really think that is the case? :)

Indeed I do, unless of course they are of a type that is designed to protect the wearer and filter in bound air, most masks bought over the counter and used by medical staff are not of that type. surgical masks are designed to trap exhaled particles rather than filter inbound air. Google the subject and check it out.

Just was about to write the same.

    Thanks for the clarification.

  8. Howdy folks,

Does anyone have any advice on buying myself an decent qualituy acoustic guitar when I move to Phuket later this year? Guitar store perhaps? or does anyone know of a local luthier hiding away somewhere there? :)

    Cheers,

    Glenny Van-Halen

CentralWorld has a few music stores (about 4 or 5). 3rd and 4th floor. Ask the information.

Although I am not an expert, it seems quite professional. They sell famous brands as well.

I see lot's of musicians there testing the equipment.

    Check it out

  9. I went back in the archives and found posts about this, but when I mentioned the recommendations to my SO there was a quizzical look and a why would you go to an eye hospital for a regular eye exam. So for clarification --

It appears that many think the best place to have a thorough and professional eye exam in Bangkok is the Rutnin Eye Hospital.

Then take the prescription to one of the Top Charoen Optical shops for the glasses themselves.

    Thoughts?

Accuracy and vision health overrides price.

    Yes, I can confirm.

Rutnin for the test. Even the Royals go there. Paid 180 Baht and it took 45 min.

    Demand your test results.

They are reluctant to hand it over

and the will guide you immediately after the test in the glasses department expecting you to purchase your glasses there.

For the optitcal shop I can recommend Washington Optical in the Amarin Plaza (Chitlom) 1st Floor in the rear.

Very professional, friendly, polite and they really know their business. They run a very professional eye test as well.

If you buy glasses, the test is free.

Selection for frames are not huge, but sure you will find something suitable.

Forget Top Charoen if you are serious about your eyes.

  10. With all the hype about those yellow buses I would like to add my 10 cents and question the quality.

From the outside they look nice and fancy , but I find those babies incredibly loud when they pass by.

Even louder than those old, smoke belching junk boxes.

Anyone else has the same experience?

I mean, even the Chinese must have heard about noise pollution.

Took one of these yellow babies (shuttle from the Airport- to the bus terminal) lately.

Well, after just a short while in service (the airport is not that long open) and besides being very noisy (engine) in the passenger cabin,

that bus was literally falling apart from the inside.

And this on the new road surfaces around the airport.

How long will the life cycle be when they roll the streets and potholes of Bangkok?

  11. I am looking to find crispy peking duck which falls off the breast/bone that goes with pancakes/spring onion/plum sauce etc!!! i do not want just the skin and the rest of the breast made into a choice of different dishes but just as stated above.

The question is, does anybody know where it is possible to get this. have tried most of the usual places including Royal Cliff, to no avail.

Only 350 Baht for a whole bird ain't so bad, right?

    And it's real yummy.

    Going there for years.

  12. First of all my condolences.

Secondly, there is obviously one very important piece of information that they need to clear up.

The German woman arrived in Thailand with her partner and visited Hua Hin on May 12 before coming down with flu-like symptoms a few days later, Srithamma said.
    - That from the AFP article
The tourist, identified as Mrs. Barbel Wilhelmine, was visiting Hua Hin in Prachuab Khiri Khan province with her husband and child and had been staying in a hotel for about a month before having chest pains and breathing difficulties on May 18.
    - That from the Nation

Had she been in the country for a month or not which would make a massive difference to how severe this could get.

Done a quick search on Google. Most publications mention MAY 12 as arrival date in Thailand.

like this one - just updated: EARTHTIMES UPDATE

It's all over the press in Germany.

I did a quick Translation of the report on http://www.n-tv.de/1156912.html (German news website)

    Tuesday, 19 Mai 2009 May 2009

H1N1 suspected in Thailand, German woman dead

A German tourist died in Thailand of suspected swine flu while under observation.

According to the Thai Health Ministry the 59-year-old died during transport from the southern coastal town of Hua Hin

    to a hospital in Bangkok.

The woman entered the Thailand on 12 Mai with her partner. A few days later, she showed flu-like symptoms.

Since Saturday, the German was reportedly under observation.

A test will be conducted to show whether the woman was actually infected with the influenza virus A (H1N1).

    Results are expected for Wednesday.

  13. I am living in Chiang Mai but travel sometime thru the Hong Kong airport. Does anyone know if I can purchase an affordable airline ticket at the Hong Kong airport to fly to a viriety of places in Asia? I know I can purchase cheap tickets like this at the Chiang Mai and Suvarnabhumi airports.

    Thank You kindly

    Joe

    Check out www.aerohkg.com

Prices are very good imho. Click airfare on top of the website.

If the flight you need is not listed send them an enquiry.

    Reply comes very fast.

Used their services a few times.

    Very reliable and professional.

At Chek Lap Kok airport you will only see airline sales counters selling you full fare tickets.

    Cheers

  14. Anyone know of a good source of bacon bits at a good price?

The only one I found are the imported "Bacos" types at Paragon.

Surely there must be another place to buy similar (local?) bacon bits at a much lower price?

(Aside from frying your whole bacon strips and then cutting 'em up yourself...)

    :)

    Try Foodland.

Housemade fresh Bacon Bits in a small jar: 29 Bt (meat and cold cut section)

Bought mine in the Srinakarin branch but I guess you can find it in every store.

    Bon apetit

  15. Anyone who knows a good barber in Bangkok?

I wanna get a good decent modern haircut with consulting me before the cutting; preferably in English.

I dont want that standard 250 Baht thai haircut.

Last time I went to Chic Club in Siam Soi 4. I cant recommend it, as opposed to many thais who did.

    Help me outta here, please!

I can recommend this one if Pinklao is not too far for you.

  16. Whilst appreciating points made herein, I do recall my personal experiences crossing, or not, the Channel, when the transport workers, apparently predominantly French truckers, would blockade Le Harve and the Normandy ports often to bring pressure for their local political issues. The police there often seemed loath to proactively deal with this interruption to commerce and passengers either.

    Just a thought/memory.

    Regards

    /edit typo//

Yeah, I've lived in France a while and experienced the french style of protests, which often involves unrelated people. I don't really appreciate that either. I've not seen them take over an airport in Paris, though.

Oh yes ! Union strikes shutting down airports are common all over Europe. Preferably during the peak holiday season, to give their demand more power. Rings a bell?

  17. There are millions of Thais that support his political views and they might be happy to have him back.

There are those that will greet him with a ticket to prison, and will be happy to welcome him personally at the airport.

There are those from PAD that are probably pissing themselves with delight as their raison d'etre will have returned.

I for one wish he'd stay away if only to spare Thailand of the arguments, fights, bitterness and attempted military coup that will follow his return.

If he returns at Christmas time and there are disruptions at airports and tourist venues, and senseless violence, the already ailing tourist industry will have been dealt a horrible blow. No one needs that now.

I am pretty sure that chaos (both economical and political) in Thailand is what he wants so that then he can come back as some kind of 'saviour' with promises to fix everything, this is what the red shirt brigade think will happen, they want it back like the good old days after he came to power in 2001 problem is though the world and Thailand is a VERY different place now.....

    You hit the nail.

A perfect scenario for his comeback.

The struggling economy, rising unemployment, weak government etc will play perfectly in his cards.

People will cry for a strong arm to lead them out of misery.

And here he comes. The man who walks on water.

  18. Any update on this story?

(It had slid down to Page 4 of this Forum - and I know many are still interested.)

The most important update here came from 'sriracha john' many days ago!

He showed the link between the obnoxious father of the (allegedly) murderous son:

    The Landmark Hotel.

It is on THOSE steps where all we who (uniquely in my less than humble view) feel so strongly about this obscene tragedy must make their protests known and felt!

And please, mods, don't delete this one too! An appeal to show peaceful, legal, support for a just cause can't possibly be legally actionable..................!!?

So then it is confirmed is it - the Landmark Hotel ownership? Now then more to the point - can we flag the real court date when the 'honest' judge must make his/her verdicts - and is there a way to re-flag a day or so before to alert members?

It's been so quiet for some time now.

    Let's not forget this.

    When is the court date??

November? Or is all already forgotten.

This story is still sickening me.

    Anybody with an update??

  21. Reducing the fuel reserves to me its a severe safety issue, and the passengers safety must always go 1st.

TG would be better off to retire their aging A300 fleet and switch to modern, fuel efficient aircrafts.

This will help to reduce the fuel bill significantly.

They have ordered 787's to replace those old Airbuses, but they are due for delivery in a couple of years only.

Thai Airways International (THAI) is seeking to skimp on fuel reserves on its aircraft as part of its intensified effort to reduce costs in light of high oil prices. The national carrier wants to halve contingency fuel reserves, legally now at 5% of total fuel load on each flight, in order to reduce weight on aircraft to cut fuel burn and emissions.

The cut, which was proposed to the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), is part of more stringent fuel management being adopted at THAI. The company is toughening its cost reduction programme as it reported its worst quarterly loss since the 1997 Asian financial crisis in the second quarter of this year.

THAI executives allayed safety concerns about the proposed reduction in fuel reserves, as it is in line with practices in the European Union.

DCA deputy director general Wuthichai Singhamanee agreed, saying THAI's request was not unreasonable and therefore is permissible. ''This is fuel that is not used and there is nothing to be worried about,'' he said.

This portion is in addition to the volume needed to cover the distance on a specific flight, enabling an aircraft to fly to an alternate airport in case the airport where the aircraft is supposed to land cannot be served. The reserve is also in addition to fuel allotted to allow a plane to fly in a holding pattern for 30 minutes when landing is not possible.

Using a flight from Bangkok to London as an example, a THAI executive pointed out that halving the contingency reserve would shed about two tonnes from the 120 tonnes of jet fuel (about 960 barrels) a Boeing 747-400 normally carries.

By doing so, the airline could reduce fuel burned on that flight by about 800 kilogrammes, translating into financial savings of US$800 a flight.

With fuel prices now their biggest cost, airlines including THAI are aggressively enforcing new policies designed to reduce consumption.

Roughly 40% of THAI's total operating costs are for fuel, up from 37% last year.

THAI's fuel bill last year was about 70 billion baht with consumption of three million tonnes. As oil prices started spiking in April this year, its 2008 fuel cost is estimated at nearly 100 billion baht.

The savings arising from reducing fuel reserves could be substantial given the size of THAI's operation and network _ 82 aircraft, 18 million passengers a year and 60 destinations.

Achieving cost savings is critical for THAI, not for profitability but to stop losses from growing.

The carrier recorded a $308-million second-quarter loss, slightly worse than market expectations, on soaring fuel costs and a significant $150-million exchange loss related to its US dollar and euro borrowings, compared to a $43-million gain in the second quarter of 2007.The airline is slowing its planes by nearly 10 minutes, carrying less water, fewer newspapers and blankets, and limiting crew luggage allowances to cut fuel use and reduce weight.

THAI shares closed yesterday on the SET at 15.80 baht, down 30 satang, in trade worth 15.9 million baht.
