  1. Yes and all the other scams as well go there at your own peril

i say, have been there for holidays and will not go back

only the newbies go there till they learn then i doubt most would go back

Not true, I have been doing to Phuket for nearly 20 years and I love it. I always stay far from the action around Soi Nanai, stay at a nice hotel, hire a bike from them and have absolutely no problems. Of course I never rent a Jet Ski or car or even take a taxi as I have my own bike. Keeping the alcohol to moderate levels you need to always be wary but apart from that cant wait to hit the Tiger disco and those lovely kitties in there!

Bad news for you. Tiger burned down last August.

  2. Here we go again trying to run before they can walk!

I really would like to see a good rail system put in place, but first I would like to see the infrastructure built to an acceptable standard, the present rail lines cannot cope with trains traveling at 30 mph let alone a high speed train.

The cost of a first class ticket from Chiangmai to BKK is around 1900 Bt and is taking over 12 hrs (15 last time I used it) you can fly for a few 100 Bt more! I can't see them keeping the price competitive enough to warrant people using it.

It will be handy for fake imports and the like that's about it!

In China prices for high-speed train tickets are about 3 times those for standard trains.

This has already led to high vacancy rates on many high-speed trains lines, leaving slower trains packed with passengers without any seats.

  3. China is more interested in the project than other countries said Damrong Kraikuan, director-general of the Thai Foreign Ministry’s East Asia departmen

I believe Thailand is most interested to deal with China only, as there are no kickbacks avail from the competitors (France, Germany, Japan).

As much as I welcome the idea to improve Thailands rail system, I'm wondering if a high speed train can be a commercial success.

For the vast majority of Thais the tickets will most likely be way to expensive and they will stick to the busses, vans and the walking speed trains.

  4. Why not leave your car at Tesco or some other shopping centre? Parking is free!

Would it really be wise to leave your car at Tesco for say two days? Surely it would be noticed by security. Is the parking free to anyone or just customers? I think the best way would be to drive into a hotel car park, point to your car, and give the security guy a few cans of beer from 7-11.

Where's the Tesco at DM anyway?

I know when the skytrain first opened I drove to Bankok and parked my car at Tesco On Nut and had to pay 50Baht an hour for my 'free' parking.

Also I've seen signs in Carrefour before stating "no overnight parking" and have seen vehicles 'booted', presumably for violating that.

I also don't remember ever having parking problems at the old DM before but never left the car for a couple of weeks there like I do at Swampy.

Lotus Onnut is free parking for the 1st 3 hours. After that 50 Baht /hr
