  1. Some one should tell the BiB they could make a fortune from testing exhaust emissions, the amount of emissions coming out of all types of badly maintained vehicles is beyond belief.

These days when I pull up at traffic lights I look at the other exhausts to see which one's are splattering out oil and the like, then manoeuvre away from them. I don't understand why the Thai authorities are not clamping down on this.

Exhaust fumes are choking the city.

Exhaust is tested every year when doing the yearly reqistration for cars 7 years or older.

    Tested by who?

Did you actually ever see one of those tests you mention?

    Nothing is tested, ever.

You pay a fee, get your stamp and that's it.

  2. And again they have quietly increased the 30-day smart pass prices. But no mention.

New smart pass fares effective June1st:

50 trips (22 baht per trip)
40 trips (23 baht per trip)
25 trips (25 baht per trip)
15 trips (27 baht per trip)

This is the 3rd ! time and 35% total increase in 6 years.

Back in 08 a 20 trip pass was 400 Baht. (20 Baht per trip)
Now under the new fare table it's 27 Baht per trip. (15 trip pass)

    On a side note:
for the vast majority of working Thais in Bangkok the BTS tickets are way too expensive.

They can't afford to pay 100 Baht per day or more for their daily commute.

  3. Thais only understand things when it hits them in their wallet. So, to that end, charge the customer 1 or 2 baht for every bag used (small bag = 1 baht, big bag = 2 baht).

Also, some time ago at Terminal 21 I bought 6 pasteries at one of the bake shops in the basement. Yup, you guessed it, each pastry went into it's own little plastic bag to be sealed shut with cello tape, and the lot went into a big plastic bag. So for 6 pastries I walked away with 7 plastic bags and about a meter of cello tape.

Trying to get Thais to cut back on plastic bags is going to be a hard sell, but charging for each bag would go a long way to making it work.

Exactly, spot on. Awareness only goes through the wallet. 1 or 2 Baht might not be enough to make a significant dent.

Make it 5 Baht for the big bag and 2 for the small, and the 500 Million bags per day will be cut at least in half in no time.
