  1. Yeah, thanks guys.
    Still having no luck.
Even tried it in the dreaded IE as well as Chrome and Firefox.
Cannot get paypal to come up. ( I did get the login page up on Firefox but then it just hangs up)
And I tried 2 different computers in my house.
So, I guess I've got to try an internet cafe or something. (do they still have those?)

  2. When I built our house in Issan, I first drew a plan up on graph paper.
Then, I built a model to scale.
I used a cardbox that was close to my dimensions and then cut the end down to make it fit exactly to scale.
Then I used straight pins to insert the walls and drew in the beds and toilet etc.
Then i built the roof so that it could detach (again all to scale and complete with overhangs etc)

so, when we had some language barrier problems when discussing things with my builder, I would just go to the model, lift off the roof to show him things like truss spacing, purlins, and also hallways, door swings, and all dimensions (since it was all to scale)

This helped us immensely and I am happy with the result in almost all ways (except for a few shortcuts that the builder took when I wasn't there to keep an eye on them)

so, it can be done yourself, if you have the time and patience and some math skills.

    Good luck with your project.

  3. Another shop is on Choafa West road across the road from the PTT station (about a km south of Wat Chalong)

    Good luck.

I've been using the same printer now for 4 years as it came recommended by one of these Thai printer ink refiller (and repair) guys.

    HP

  4. I would go to Ocean shopping (near Saxophone pub in Phuket town) and walk around in there.
    Lots of shops.
Some of them have what you are looking for.

(I think I've seen them in there)

    Good luck.
If not there, then nearby is Robinsons in Phuket town.

(but ocean stuff would be a lot cheaper)

If you can't find it, www.warmstuff.com would have all of that with quick shipping. (but maybe not so quick to Thailand)

  5. There never has been any planning. It's always an after the fact reaction. After they allowed all the drainage canals to be filled in, oh my, there's flooding! Allow building on steep slopes and have mud slides. A few more construction workers die. Still nothing done... Water, garbage and sewer, no thought, just build more... Amazing, eh?

You do know that they are building a big reservoir over by Phunaka golf course, right?

Been working on it for at least 7 years now.

It will be almost as big as Bang Wad dam. (which they made 3 meters higher over the last 3 years)

    So, someone is thinking ahead.

The problem in this case appears to be pipes being too small.

Sounds like a fairly easy fix. At least compared to a dam with a circumference of 5kms.

  6. I'd hit the Ton Sai and Bang Pae waterfalls as well as the Khao Khad Views Tower, Big Buddha, the aquarium, and Kathu Waterfall for a start.
Also the National Park: Siranath which I believe has the same name at both Nai Yang beach, and Mai Khao beach (near Nikki beach club).

Also explore the islands of Khao Yao Noi and Kaho Yao Yai on the eastern side of Phuket.

I'd also hit the sea gypsy village of Rawai, and the area nearby has a few small beaches that are beautiful on the east side: Laem Ka and the other one between that and the sea gypsy village (the one where you turn at the 7/11 that the Korean's get bussed to for their speedboat trips.

Anyway, that's a start and usually where I take friends visiting.
I stay away from the more touristy things if I can.

  7. Mmmmm. 19 posts and 2 answered the OP's question.

I rode in one once 13 years ago.
From Patong to Nai Harn when I moved there.
It was 400 baht and I only took it because I had a bunch of stuff to move.
    I swore never again and I haven't.

By the way there was a cruise ship at Panwa a little over a month ago for you guys who are keeping track.

  8. "None of this rubbish seems to happen if you live out in the sticks." - none of this rubbish seems to happen if you live in Thailand, and not Phuket. biggrin.png

TIP - This Is Phuket. smile.png

    Sometimes it does.

Was working in the state of Maine a few years ago and we needed to go about 4 blocks to pickup some concrete steps (prefab type)

So, 4 of us jumped into a pickup truck to go the 4 blocks. 2 in the front, 2 in the back.

Sure enough a cop saw us and pulled us right over.

Got a ticket and a lashing out about safety as it's against the law in America to sit in the back of a pickup truck.

Then I see school buses here with a few hanging on the back, standing on the bumper.

    .

  9. Why do I never read anything good about Phuket?

    Because there's rarely; if ever,

anything good to say about the place.

I lived there for two years,

    and luckily I moved on...

as Thailand offers so much more than Phuket has to offer. wai.gif

Possibly it's the threads that you click on.

There's one called "What's On Phuket" that lists a lot of events going on in the next week or two.

    Good stuff.

The govt. has taken away the illegal beach restaurants and chair that (to some of us) were littering the beaches.

They are much more natural now.

The lifeguards are back working and doing a good job (at Nai Harn where I see them anyway)

So, there are threads about this stuff.

You might only be clicking on the ones that are about the bad things here like: kratom leaves, underpasses, no-helmet checks, etc.

Up to you what you look at of course.

    Seems the average poster is

  10. One of the problems I see is the red flags get put out even on a calm day.
I don't know about Kata Noi as I don't swim there.
But at Nai Harn, they put out red flags most every day.
Whether they are needed or not.
So, they tend to get ignored.
When this is the case, you must use your own judgement or, just stay out of the sea at all times the way I see it.
I imagine the Chinese guy saw other people swimming so figured it was OK.

    Happens a lot I believe.

  11. Maybe it depends on the person. (and/or the experience you give them)

Took my wife and son on a trip across the US in a van we remodeled so that we could sleep and cook out of.
    They both loved it.

My wife (Thai) learned to read a map.
Learned how to cook Thai food with ingredients she found in markets there (even on an Indian reservation in northern AZ)

Learned a lot of geography, history (we drove a lot on route 66 and then later up through New England), and how to cut grass on a riding mower.

Had a few culture shocks. Fat people mainly baffled her and how bad they seemed to eat. (cheesy, bacon fries etc.)

Another one was: why do so many Americans grow grass in their yards? you can't eat it, and have to spend a lot of time cutting it.

Had to agree with her on those points!

  12. Deadlines are made for some reason.
Not sure what it is though.

The tunnel at Tesco was supposed to (originally) be finished in 2 years.
I think it's going on 4 now and doesn't look anywhere near completion.

But must say, this one at Bang Khu seems to be moving along fairly quickly in comparison.

I read somewhere that the Chalong underpass was going to start in early Sept and the company would be fined millions of baht for each week (or was it month) that it would go over.
But, doesn't seem to bother them (or me) as it has not started yet and the month is almost over.

    Deadlines! Yeah right.

I agree with whoever said they should be working 24 hours a day on these projects with quality planning and workers.

Would be nice if they put all the workers on 3 shifts and finished one at a time, before starting the next one.
