  2. Sorry first i was joking but now i am getting annoyed with Samui home made food. there is now 3 forums open from 1 company. seems to me like people r trying to cash in on a bad incodent. The thing is that me and my friends guessed that this sorte of thing would happen.

don't minde the occasional thread about your company but now there is. if we are talking about food. i think you are takinng the buscuit.

By the way for the mods. i am not having a go at anybody or insalutlin them. just speaking my minde

Cash in or try to continue a business many want to see remain... under difficult circumstances may i add.

What's wrong with talking about food. Is it any less boring than other topics posted on occasion.

I can sympathize with their predicament personally.

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

  3. An alternative might be to get a lawnmower (Home Pro or is it Home Mart? Beside Tesco Chawang ) & suck them in to the bag... & then you'll have nice mulch for the garden... used to do that all the time in the "west" ... You need a heavier duty mower.... with power wheels better... just make sure no rocks or glass bottles in the areas to do! :) could be a little dusty too, but then too a blower...

Been thinking of doing that myself...

Any idea of brands ? I have not seen that being done. The land is not that level and it has really ALOT of tree cover over half so this is no small job or one hit wonder.of course sticks and twigs falling. It is on going process this job..

Hand held blowers pretty hopeless as Rooo points out... I have never seen a back pack blower used in Thailand, that would work, better if you could find.. but would be very expensive... Some young lads would be cheaper! :D

What ones do you refer to Roo ? The cheap Chinese brands or ? The ones I have looked at on the web are STIHL / TORO / JAPANESE BRANDS and are gas powered 2 stroke and above. They look pretty decent, but I have not used them ever in practice.

From what I could make out they are around 10 K baht +.

Now you say labour might be cheaper but then you have the issues of having different people into your land all the time. Them not turning up or having to be watched for stealing and if i am watching i might as well be raking. etc etc

I really hate raking as its alot of leaf fall and none of my family likes it either so i just want to get it solved and put some fun into it as I am sure all would be fighting to have a go on the machine.

Am i being lazy = yes

    thanks

  4. I've got 2, all but hopeless. If it's a one off, why don't you get a couple of guys to rake it.

PS: You are quite welcome to try mine.

    Roo.

    Pls

Can you move this to the gardening part of Samui forum as that was where i intended to post (error).

Thanks for offer, I may well take you up on that

  5. Hi

Does any one knw where I can buy a leaf blower for clearing about 2500 sq meters, mostly leaves and small twigs.

Any recommendations on brands , power and an estimation of price.

From web research looks like electric is not going to do it and gas is the way to go and something with some power at that.

    Cheers

  6. Hi Nirvana,

I am not 100% sure whether Malay Grass is the wide bladed grass or the fine one... But both can be purchased through any of the Nurseries... Certainly the nursery in Maenam & Ban Tai...

You just tell them how many square meters you want & they will bring it in. I think it comes from Suratthani, some where .... But the nurseries won't say where for obvious reasons!

I think unless you are heading over to the mainland in a pickup, anyway, it may not save you anything.

But the "young guys" will come and prep the soil & help you plant it... for a "tip" I am never sure what a tip should be, but base it on how many hours they spend.... & perhaps give them some thing to drink!

I have tried sourcing seed, with no luck, here, so far.... I've heard the Golf courses may have it... but You need to know someone in management, I think to get it...?.

To go "Cheap" route on laying sod /turf for the lawn, you could order less than what you need & cut it into plugs & plant, about 6 to 9 inches apart (about 6"- 9" squares) ... but it is a little tedious. You'll find the sod here, has no or very little soil with it...

I moved a lawn last year in my garden... ended up with three or four times the area, but it took days to do! :) It was filled in within about two months, since I did it around October. I think if you try to do now, you will spend your life watering it down to keep it moist... Using a shade cloth on small areas would help. but not too practical for larger areas.

Your best time to do this would be just before the rainy season, perhaps October, unless you are one of the lucky ones on Samui, who has plenty of water, to keep the new planting reasonable moist while it roots in, for several weeks.

I also suggest with the coconut fibre (good idea BTW) that you work it into the existing soil a little, while raking if you just place it on top, it may dry out too quickly, & you need to help the roots, go down! If there are rocks in the soil, get them out!

Water the planting area a few times to settle the soil, before planting & re rake it out.... I've not seen rollers here! So you will need to use your feet to firm the grass into the soil...

If you do bring in Sod/turf, spread it out, if it takes a few days to lay it all, it will decompose quickly if staked up..

    Hope that helps!

    Jim

    Great, Cheers Jim.

We have water but not enough to even think of this project until its getting a little wetter shall we say than now.

It does take alot of time and water but it took pretty quick.

Yes its the thicker bladed grass. The fine one i find tends to burn easier and not so strong as the thin bladed but it does look and feel nicer.

  7. Just as an update for anyone else selling - we are now with 7 agents in Phuket. The average commission is 4 per cent. Lowest commission 3 per cent, highest so far 5 per cent.

We rejected 2 agents. One was decidedly dodgy. The other one looked totally bored, rude, and boasted how many properties they had on their books i.e. hopeless case and don't deserve the business.

Just another update if anyone is interested. 18 property agents later, Facebook page, Facebook person page, ThaiVisa classified ad, and we seem to have a buyer (if it all goes through okay) <insert Fingers Crossed smilie>. This is a re-sale property on Phuket. All the agents commissions ranged from 3 per cent to 5 per cent, sometimes with VAT added, sometimes included.

    Hi Chickencurry

Did you get any bites from the Thai Visa advert ?

i am considering this one myself

  8. Hi Nirvana,

Well, I asume you mean on Samui.... Most of the nurseries I've seen usually have seed, certainly the one in Maenam & Ban Tai (Owners the same) ...

Some of the small Thai shops, carry them, you just need to watch out for the seed racks... I pointed out earlier don't buy seed if the racks are sitting in full sun... they just don't seem to germinate!

If you are on Koh Phengnan, the "Garage" in Tongsala usually has a good selection, (at least they did two years ago, when I lived there) even seed trays, & the only place I have ever seen on any of the Islands...

My Thai neighours, seem to find seed in bulk for veggies, I think from the store next to 7-11 (near the traffic light) in Maenam (I'll check on that, & add if different) ... but that is one store that keeps their packet seed racks in the sun.... never had luck with them.

Tesco have some seeds too, but I think most not good for this area... in the hardware section usually...

Many plants here are really quite easy to take cuttings of.... Coleus, Impatiens, Cosmos...Portulaca, and lots of other plants too.

    Hope that helps!

    Jim

    Hi Jim

Thanks for that, yes on Samui.

Just another thing i wanted to check on. Do you knw a place where I can buy turf "Malay grass" . I have a big area to do and last time for a smaller area I used a contractor, who said he sourced from BKK. From what i saw it was really nothing to it, Coconut fibre down after leveling the land, some fertilizer and then the turf down. I am looking to save some coins and maybe source directly. Any Ideas ?

    Thanks again

    Nirvana

  9. Portulaca, easy to grow! Great in pots or as an edging plant in the ground...

Blooms only in the morning, then they close in the afternoon...

Ah Finally got it! Duh! :) Except seem to have double up on one!

    Hi

Do you recommend and decent place to buy seeds / nice variety of flowering plants.

For that matter vegetable seeds as well.

    Thanks for help

Good for you. The world is a better place when people do such deeds as you have done.

Its an outrage that they do nothing on a tourist Island when so much money pours into the country from tourism.

But is much the same in Koh Samui etc.

What to say...that has not already been said.

If anything would be organised by foreigners i guess they would sya its working and fine you.

  11. Hello All

I am trying to ascertain the best way to sell a property or two in Thailand , if there is such a way possible.

Properties in Udon Thani, Koh Lanta and Koh Samui

Have seen the local property agents which seems to be "just give me 1000 Baht and I will list your place on my website". The contracts really did stink a bit and I was not convinced on how they are actually going to actively sell anything. I remember when we bought the places the agents were basically just like drivers who took us to the place and did nothing from there. Not able to answer any questions etc, luckily owners were around. It does not fill me with confidence in general I must say.

Would really appreciate some recommendations and ideas experiences from fellow members.

Thai Visa Classified ? Creating own website ? , Newspapers ?

    Thanks

  12. A very naive (stupid) young man.

Quote : A Thai resident for eight years, D worked on the island of Koh Samui, taking tourists on underwater adventures as a dive master and scuba-diving instructor.

So he lives here and has a work permit but then admits he's trying to use "Travel" insurance – the insurance company had every right to cancel the policy and pay him nothing.

Exactly right. I was a career Insurance Broker for over 30 years. I have posted on several forums in Thailand giving advise and pointers on insurance matters including medical insurance. Just a waste of time. Expats would much rather listen to the guy on the next bar stool than anyone who actually knows what they are talking about.

Insurance is always too expensive: So if you can't afford the insurance how the hel_l are you going to afford the costs if you get really sick or injured.

I had people tell me I was paying far too much for my own insurance.......ex- bus drivers from places like Liverpool telling me about insurance premiums...

And of course the guys who always shop for the absolute lowest premium on the assumption that all policies are the same---only the premiums are different...

The problem is that they will not listen....they do not want to hear facts.... they just want to hear--what they want to hear and disregard the rest (I think that's from a Simon and Garfunkle song)

What in the world would make this character think that travel insurance would going to respond when he was actually living and working here.....I guess the guy on the next bar stool was his insurance consultant..

My own solution: I buy a high limit (30 million Baht) broad coverage policy with a high deductible (40,000 Thb) per claim. If I get sick it will cost me 40,000 bt but the insurance will pay anything over an above that and the 40K is easily affordable. The premiums are going to increase as I get older so I set aside a fund for medical expenses and contribute to it each month. Hopefully I can afford the insurance premiums for enough years until the fund is big enough....because sooner or later (later I hope) the chances are that I will need it. If I were to develop a serious long term illness or an expensive to maintain chronic condition then I would likely be forced to return to Canada and re-connect with the state health care program which does not exclude pre-existing or existing conditions....It just has a 3 month waiting period to re-join. That would be a last resort but at least there is a last resort. Free advise for those who care...for those who don't....keep the credit cards handy and make sure you have a high limit.

    A sound and sensible post.

  13. "QUOTE (NALAK @ 2010-01-05 17:03:39)

LYNX, COCO,PROFMIL, SABAI PROPERTIES, all stable companies until they ceased trading with partially finished developments. I just wonder what it takes to stop people buying here.

well, if they never built anything it is good for the island unless they have cut all trees and destroyed the land at the build site....

samui needs coconuts and no more building for 5/10 year...or paradise island will be renamed cement island...."

I think if you take any notice of what the new mayor and tesse bahn are trying to do you will see that they are trying to improve the Island and to clean it up - Nothing happens overnight but the right intentions are there .

What was update on profmil ?

Are the owners still around ?

  14. Hello

Do you knw of any specific website that has old pictures of thailand and preferably Phuket / Samui / Pattaya / Bangkok etc

I tried going through google and came up with one or two sites with a few pictures but not many.

Considering how many people have passed through I would have thought alot on line.

The pics you had were great and it would be very interesting to see more.

    Any ideas ??

    Thanks

  15. noise is very present in samui especially because of the lack of enforcement of regulations(if any).

a very recent case is at soi bond kai(the ghost road), in cross from bangrak , on the right a foreigner decided to open a bar with girls, this is an open bar (no windows or doors) and he had the great idea to annoy everyone by using a loud speaker system resulting in basses being spread until 2 AM...

Maybe someone will let him know sooner or later..
