  1. try Impact Media near Tesco Lotus on Super Highway.... its a townhouse about 400 meters after tesco lotus towards Amarin hotel and Nimmanahaemin Road on the same side of the Super Highway as Tesco. Big orange text with Impact Media. Ask for Santi his the owner and speaks really good English. They might be able to help. In my opinion avoid VSign.

  2. Does anyone know where and where the Walen school will open?

Does anyone know about the Pro Language School?

I think I will also take one of the 1 year Thai courses sometime in the future at the moment I think Payap Uni and CMU are the 2 to choose between but would like to learn more about the Walen and Pro Language schools if their any good.

One of my friend did visit the Walen in BKK and said that the prices they have on website is BS and when you walk in and if you want also the ED Visa thing you can multiply the website prices with 3 or 4, any experiences on this?

  3. I just watched a movie in Vista @ Kad last night. I believe it was the smallest theater room number 7. The movie was great, theater was ok, a bit too cold as they always are, but my experience was good. We did go to airport first, but I could not stand the very loud noise outside the theater. They had several Thais with microphones and thats never good :)

Anyway I liked the one in Kad.

  4. take the ED visa for the next 5 years and I believe by then things might have changed... so its a bit early to think that. The rules might have changed, you might not want to stay here anymore, or you might have a work that provides you the visa and wp. So I think its way too early to worry about life after 3-5 years of ED ...

  5. Instead of Word you can use Pages as mentioned b4. I love Pages and you can also import/export word docs with it.

You know u can also run apple in almost any piece of hardware as long at it has Intel processor (not too old). I have collection of different pc gear here and im running Mac OS X in it I also have Vista but only opened it 2 times so far.

  6. TV speedtest gives me this...

    Last Result:

Download Speed: 506 kbps (63.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 27 kbps (3.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

    Latency: 3798 ms

for me uploading is more important than downloading... and the results are really not worth what im paying for... is there any decent internet provider in CM? my house is located in Suthep Road.

  7. Ing Doi is a nice place. It is on the canal road about 2 km North of Huey Kaew Road. The homes are large and so are the lots. Each home is different and not cookie-cutter.

I agree Ing Doi is also nice... and I like the North-West side of the Canal Road... after Huaw Kaew... a lot less traffic there. The Chang Khyen area just behind Ing Doi is my favorite in CM, unfortenately not living there anymore :)

  8. With your budget u can get almost any house in CM =)

anyway go to check out Lanna Country Garden, you might like it a lot its in Soi Chank Khyen, near the mountains. They building some condos around it and I got worried that it would be ruined but last time visited there its still quiet and nice.

    here is a map: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp...016426&z=17

There is another one on the Sameong Road... perhaps Country Garden? Which also looked nice. In Lanna Country Garden I like the thing that there are not 2 house that looks same, they all different and they all have beautiful gardens that the moo bahn takes care of.

  9. There is Chiang Mai 4 year plan available from some government office website in Thai (140pages pdf). These is the development plan for Chiang Mai 2009-2013. Is there any place where i can get this in English?

Google translator is not good enough

Chiang Mai chamber or commerce didnt have anyone speaking english and eventually they hang up the phone for me.

  10. I believe that as long as you stay out of Denmark (not more than 6 months a year and while there dont work) you should safe of not paying there. Correctly if Im wrong but Denmark got the highest taxation in the world (my own country Finland comes 2nd).

I had my own fight with Finnish tax office after moving here but thats all cool now. There is also one small island in Malesia where you can register tax free company and run your business there might be worth checking out. If you want to know more pm me and ill send you details.

  11. Hi,

    We are looking at potentially moving to Chiang Mai. I'm currently looking into the housing side of things, I like the idea of a Moo Bahn for now and have looked at the following places online;

    Sansaran

    Karnakok 2

    Koolpuntville 12

I was wondering if anyone knew of any other similar developments and would really like to hear of anyone with experience of any of the above.

Looking to be fairly close to Chiang Mai and within easy commuting distance to Lanna International School.

    Thanks

try Home In Park, Baan Nai Fan and Lanna Pinary Home all in Canal Road and easy access to the Lanna International School

  12. first of all if you are music producer / dj i dont understand how have you lived without mac so far? get the apple right now - you will love it.

    Fastest: Apple MacBook Pro

The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year is a Mac. Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a Toshiba, not even an Alienware. - Pcworld

so yes if for any reason (i cant think of any) u want to run winslow in it you can.

  13. Dear cmdream,

well its difficult to explain the atmosphere on that room, but I did not see any logical reason why I should have left the room. I know the police thought that it would help as they could get them to sign the empty forms which they could then later fill in and makes things a bit easier.

To straighten things up a little. I never accused the rent shop of stealing the bike. I do believe that someone with fitting keys had to take it, otherwise they would have picked one of the single locked and less used bikes parked on the same spot. This does not mean its the rental shop it also could be someone who has rented the bike before and has copied the keys or just one with special kind of tool to open up any lock, I'm sure they got those here as well.

I do agree in some extend about the attitude problem - I did expect a bit more, not a Harward graduate, but something better than average bar girl, not only in English, but also in general understanding of the farangs. Example. farangs don't like to sign empty forms, farang don't like to sign something that they don't understand or they do disagree and last but not least farang might want to get copy of all those documents with them as at least later someone could tell them how they where fuc_ked :)

  14. hmm let me think this a bit as who knows the TPD might be reading this thread as well. All tough these guys English skills would not be good enough to understand :D

First of as I mentioned earlier I met 3 tourist police at sunday market around 9pm Sunday who where all very nice. They said that case sounds very familiar and asked me not to go to the local police station but to tourist police first.

Monday around 1pm we did go to TPD and there where 3 other guys who's attitude from the very beginning was pretty different. The old guy who seemed to dislike us most told us that we will not get help from there but have to go together with the owner to the local police station near wat prasin. There might have been also a little language barrier but he didn't quit understand the point that the shop owner has already threaten us with the police and "big problems" :D (I love when Thais use that). Anyway he had another case at Wat Pra Sin Police station so we went to ask for the shop owner to come there together with us. We had to wait for about hour for the previous case to be solved and Im not sure if it ever was. As this same TP was there as "translator" and the pour Italian guy was pretty pissed when he pushed to sign something he dont understand. Already then we could see what was coming. The tourist police was very unhelpful and saying phrases like "you not my boss" "I dont have to help you" etc... and occasionally left the farang along with the Thai police officer who didnt speak any English but actually seemed like a ok guy.

Once our turn came the situation was this. The tourist police was there only to translate not to give any advice. Im not sure what is their role but even as a translator he did a terrible job. Not only his English was pretty bad but also he really talked very unfriendly way to us and was pretty easy to see hows side he took in the case. We where not excusing anyone just pointing that it was a pretty weird thing that only that bike was stolen. I tried to ask some questions like "where does stolen bikes usually go?" Answer "I don't know, not my job". Ok difficult to explain the whole story but at one point our "translator" wanted me out of the room to talk only with the 2 dutch guys. I refused to do this as I didnt really see any point there. At this point they already found out that I can pretty well understand Thai and where translating the Thai to the Dutch guys (the tourist police, police and shop owner we speaking in Thai together, even the shop owner spoke really fluent English).

After I refused the shop owner snatch and jumped up saying something like "do not ever put down the Thai people". There where moment before this when I asked my friend not to sign a form that was empty (they wanted to fill it later). Also the Tourist police where saying how this is Thailand this is the procedure here.

Ok when we got out from the police station one other tourist police and our translator stopped me and wanted to see my passport. I didnt have one with me so I showed copy of my passport. Then they asked about how long I have been living here and how long I will stay and what is my purpose of being here etc. Im here as a full-time master student at Payap university so I gaved all those details and they where talking something about knowing the Payap president and getting in contact, I was not told for what reason, but perhaps checking whether my visa and studies are for real (oh and they are).

So yes from my experience yesterday I think the local Police was doing better job or at least less unpolitely.

What is actually tourist police purpose of asking my passport and visa? Are they working together with immigration. I understood these guys only do translating and they not very good in that :)

Ill keep people posted how things will continue from here.... perhaps I make another visit to TPD to find out what was that all about. Perhaps just a bad day?

  15. I wonder if the "Tourist Police" in that area are more trustworthy than the regular police?

Sorry about your troubles and good luck!

Simply, No. They can speak English, but that is the only thing they are good at, in my experience.

from my experience today I have to agree, dont expect to get help from the tourist police.

  16. this exactly same thing happen yesterday to my dutch friend.

motorbike was rented from a well known medium size mb rental couple hundred meters from Thapae Gate (inside the mote). After we left mb parked on the quest house only 100m from the rental shop it disappeared between 5-7pm yesterday!

What makes this even more strange is that there where dozen bikes parked there and this one was only one double locked!!! but with locks provided by rental shop...

after we called the shop owner he was there in few minutes and quickly wanted the 20.000 baht as it says in the "fully covered" contract. He didnt want to bother us with police but he would take if further. We asked to see tourist police and several different guys shoed up some in uniform some not, but none of them tourist police. We where also threaten with some big police chief and how he will course us problems if we dont take care of the issue.

I walked to thapea gate to talk to tourist police and they said sounds like very familiar case indeed and asked us not to go to the local police station but we are going today to tourist police office.

The shop has my friends passport. If anyone feels like give a hand or would know the shop by name where similar cases has happen would be very kind to call me today at 081 304 8038. Ozzi

  17. I realized one thing when following the topic. There is some kind of debate between public vs private uni. Could someone tell me why being public would make something better than private? Coming from country where almost all schools are public but the few private ones are probably the best ones as well as with hospitals. Im actually thinking that being private uni or hospital (just for example) is usually someway better than public as they have to do something right to survive where as public institution can do everything wrong and can still continue their existence.

Again Im not saying that as overall Payap would be better than CMU. How could I. To do such a claim I would need to be average student (Thai) and studied in both Uni's.

But what I can claim is that for non Thai, or better English speaking student Payap is a better choice with length of leg at least.
