  1. Went there with my g/f for food and a beer, very disapointed. Expensive and to be honest the food was poor and well below what i expected...maybe try the restuarant across the road, i`m talking about the farang connection in the bus station, i dont know what the new one is like..?

35-60 baht for a beer. Expensive? Well, just that tells a story about this poster. Anyway, thanks to the 98% that enjoy my place.

    Hint: He's Scottish :D:D

Hint: Among other things :D:o Never used these lil ditties 'fore.

  2. Just a follow up to see if the OP drove north and if so what date and how did he find the going? It only took my sister in law 5 hours to get here (90kms NW of Korat) by bus but she didn't leave BKK 'till midnight Sat nite(11th), and got back to BKK in less time leaving here at 6am on Wed, 15th. Apparently the uprising had a positve effect on traffic.

  3. Thanks guys. I suspected pollination might be a problem. I planted sun flowers around my entire garden several weeks ago as I noticed bees seem to love the ones in front of the house. Some have buds now. I have cucumbers, tomatos, jalapenos, and pole beans in the same are so I hope attracting bees helps all of them. Meanwhile I will try brooming the squash. You are right slap, my mouth started watering as soon as the squash plants started blooming, and unfortunately still is.

  4. I love this squash so I got some seeds from the States and set out two rows awhile back. I fertilized the plot with 15-15-15 worked and watered it in well before I put the seeds in mounds and then put on cow manure when the plants were about 6 inches tall. I now have large, lovely, healthy looking plants that load up with blooms that fall off before they make.

    Any suggestions?

  5. "Not sure where you get your info but I have a neighbor that is only 9 years old, speaks excellent englsh, and has never been out of the village"

"As for track61: Obviously more to this story than stated"

There's more. Her aunt is married to a Brit and there is a retired military guy (Thai) living down the road that had some sort laison job with the US Air Force for years. She is like their joint venture I guess. Whatever, it is working because she practices on me. I was just pointing out that language skills are not necessarily the only legitimate benchmark.

I agree that this story is BS, either on the part of the OP (2500-3000 Baht "crappy entry level job" is much more believable), or the girl. If she doesn't want to work the bars she doesn't have to. As I alluded, my 19 yo sister-in-law has worked 12-16 hrs/day in a large seafood restaurant (with only 2 days off/month) for 21/2 years and only makes 3500B(maybe another 1000 in tips), must pay the owner 1000B/mo for a room and still sends her mother 500-1000B/mo. Much, much harder than shuffling around the pole. Bar girls may be disadvantaged but I have never seen one led away at gun point. I have to ask, exactly what is the OP trying to save her from? I don't see it as the worse way to make a pretty good living. I realize they must go with X number of guys a month but they can somewhat pick and choose. I have seen them turn down drunks and/or A-holes lots of times. If they wanted to, many could probably retire wealthy after 5-10 years. Dumb choices are not mandatory.

If you ain't trolling you are being taken for a ride,

  6. Uhm sorry she dropped out of school at 14 and has no education but speaks english well? Are you a sucker? She's BEEN FALANGED already, heavily or she wouldn't speak any english at all period. She is feeding you this bullshit story about wanting to work at a gogobar because stupid dummies are supposed to instantly want to "save" her and offer to pay her to NOT work in a bar. This scam has been done a million times... how can you seriously fall for it??

Not sure where you get your info but I have a neighbor that is only 9 years old, speaks excellent englsh, and has never been out of the village.

As far as a "crappy 6000 baht a month job" goes, my sister-in-law could really use the raise. As mentioned already there are things she can do, but whatever you do you best hurry. Once they grab that pole (pun intended) it's a matter of days before it all goes up in smoke (ditto).

  7. Please note my first post. I believe, maybe wrong, at some point one must get on at least a semi-major road. The OP will do what he feels necessary or wants to do, but if he is going to travel on the 10th or 11th he needs to be prepared to move forwar around a meter progress at a time, what is said here not withstanding. For me this is a very unpleasant way to spend the day, maybe for some it a true joy.

  8. I'm with you 100%. Japan ended up winning 5-3 in the 10th. For the life of me I can't understand why the Korean manager didn't walk Ichiro Suzuki; it cost them the game.

Me either. And even more confusing, if he wasn't going to walk him why didn't he hold the runner so there would at least be a chance for a double play or a play at second. Confusing. But it was baseball at its best I think. And the players attitude so refreshing compared to MLB.

  9. Driven a lot during Songkran, on major highways you won't even know its Songkran apart from the extra traffic on some days. Smaller roads often have people throwing water, but, nothing to worry about if your in a car.

Got to love the over reactions you get to some things on here.

"Extra traiffic"? You think 60 klicks in 5 hours is over reacting?? You are right about nothing to worry about in a car. You, nor anyone else, can go fast enough to hurt anything if you come together. It's just me but I'm just not fond of going somewhere 100's of km away 3 meters at a time. I say again, if you can't go on the 9th either stay put or prepare your self for an ave. speed of about 3.5 km/hr. You figure out how long it will take. Major fun in any culture. Course it beats riding on top of the freakin' bus.

  10. "What you will find is that the hiways are about normal"

Maybe, but 2 years ago before I moved up here I drove from Pattaya to 90 kms North of Korat. Coming up 304 it took me 3 hrs and 45 min to get to where hwy 2 runs back into the by-pass road(about 300 kms ?). It took 5 hrs and20 mins to get from there to Pi Mi (about 60kms). To make matters worse, most U-turns and crossovers were blocked so you must keep going north even if you don't want to. Not normal to me. Leave on the 9th if possible. If not be prepared for a mother of all traffic jams.

  11. PS. I think the mesh is expensive around here because only one shop handles it. I paid 600B per 10 meters but if you live near a city you can probably do better.

  12. You can't see it in the pix but I "laced" some of that green nylon mesh into the bottom 3 strands of barbed wire and then anchored it to the ground with bamboo I cut off my land. I believe this will last a long time. I did this to keep the dogs and chickens out, but it will keep them in as well.

  13. Just throwing this out as an alternate as something similar is mentioned in the ref. thread. My mother-in-law had put a barbed wire fence around the entire 7 rai our house is built on before we started building. I thought the prices for concrete or chain link fencing were way out of line. I went to a large florist, cut a deal and bought 100 small bouganvillia trees for 25 baht each and planted 5 between each fence post (2,5 meter centers) The pics show the results with which I am fairly pleased.

  14. didn't realize sunflowers could be so interesting. I remember large fields around where I lived as a kid but of course didn't pay attention in those days. I never saw the ones in our yard following the sun and now they. at least the top flowers, are mature and the stems are locked. As I said, they are huge plants, would be very difficult to grow in a pot, but thanks to all for the info. I am going to sow a lot of seeds from these flowers on the west side during rainy season and see what develops.

  15. "i do not know if evil exists, (i think that it does), but i do know that until we can define what is right and wrong we will have a difficult time recognizing it."

I see where you are coming from, however I think there is a very large difference between wrong and evil.

But, believing perception of these concepts is in play seems absolute BS to me. I mean, was Hitler, Pol Pot, Jim Jones, etc. etc. wrong, evil, or defined by individual perceptions?

How about flying passenger planes into buldings? Where does that line up.

The tone of this thread does shed a little light on our unwillingness to confront "evil" though.

  16. Now that I have some time, I watch the Discovery channels quite a bit. I have been struck by the horrors we inflict on each other. From street gangs to governments to fanatics with any cause, it seems there is no end to our inhumanity. I understand all the "book" explanations like environment, brainwashing, peer pressure, nationalism, ad nauseam. As the root cause I think these are mostly BS. I've never been, and still aren't, much for religion, but I am beginning to think there is such a thing as just basic evil. Can't decide what form, if any, it takes or how to define or identify it or if it is an innate trait of man or we evolve into it.

What really dumbfounds me, however, is now that our communication/knowledge has reached the current levels, why, after all these centuries of witnessing it, we continue to tolerate evil behaviour. I suspect it is because we see it as too overwhelming to pursue a solution. Funny enough, for a short while after 9/11 I sensed that most of us realized we were all in this together and the world was going to run down at least some of the evil out there. Sadly, it wasn't long 'till we were back just trying not to see it up close.

I now have a headache so the pondering is over.

  17. Everytime I see a thread like this I wonder why farangs think thai women and thailand in general are any dIfferent that anywhere else. One of the tHings I remember when I worked in Saudi Arabia was all the western wives running around the malls wearing JC Penny outfits and thousands of dollars worth of gold. Not a thai gal in sight.

  18. Awhile back we bought and planted a packet of sunflower seeds from Big C. Though only 8 plants germinated they are beautiful. About 6 to 8 feet tall, the flowers are huge, around 8" diameter and 6 to 8 per stalk. My question is probably weird but;

We planted these flowers on the east side of the house and now all, I mean every single one, of them face east, which is into nothingness. You cannot see these beautiful creations from our front porch (where I have been known to have a few bruskis and enjoy the fruits of my garden labor) the road going by our house, any of our neighbors places, nowhere. I guess they are either facing away from the afternoon sun or toward the rising sun. I have some more seeds of different types/colors coming from the states and would like to know where to plant them so we can get some pleasure looking at them. Anyone know anything about how sunflowers orient themselves?

  19. I don't know about the clinics you mention. I know there is an excellent one at Bumrungrad in BKK. I didn't have a problem going to sleep but staying asleep. For years I averaged around 3-4 hrs sleep a night. It didn't bother me until I got into my 50's and then my daufghter-in-law convinced me to have a sleep study done in the US and it has changed my life. The study showed all kinds of stuff, mainly I had severe sleep apnea, ie, I stopped breathing 40-50 times an hour. Make it short, I followed the recommendations, now sleep around 7hrs/night and feel better than I did 10 years ago.

I would say get the study done no matter price. The minimum benefit would be more knowledge regarding your situation. PM me if you want more info about the Bumrungrad clinic.

  20. I can barely remember PP before the market and I never liked it, but TIT and enourmous amounts of stang have changed hands because of it. I always thought that if a fire started in there in the wrong place it would be hel_l. Probably make the recent night club fire pale in comparison.
