Is this Joe Cummings the author of Lonely Planet's Thailand guide book?
-
The other day I walked by they are still open!

"although feel for those unsuspecting tourists on their once-in-a-lifetime vacation."
That will be another blow to the tourism in (not only) Chiang Mai after all the days lost last december due to all those elections.
If you add, that legally no one should be sold any alcoholic drink between 14:00 and 17:00, Thailand as fun destination is dead.
Tourists looking to have such restrictions should consider Saudia Arabia as a new destination. The flying time from Europe is much shorter.

I have to correct my previous statement from 2008-11-05 20:41:21
I'll will be there + 1
-
I'll be there. Please add me to the list

So far no business has ever suceeded at Kad Farang. E.g. all restaurants failed. Giorgio, Osteria Wald, S&P etc.
I have no explaination for that.
What about Tosit? Is it still there?

Although I'm not an American, I'm very interested, who will be the next president of the United States. Payap sounds very schoolish to me. So I probably rather go, as one poster has sugested, to the Chiang Mai Saloon or U.N. Pub, where I can have a drink, too.
-
Today I was there, just for a drink and to see the menu. Since I live in a walking distance, it would be nice to have a place, where one can a have decent meal and a few drinks without needing a car or bike.
But I have to correct my previous statement. The waiters are not dressed as cowboys but as sheriffs. I didn't see any Indians but 3 cowgirls, one looked quite cute.
A typical steak will set you back 300 B. including a baked potatoe and english cooked veggies.

Great news for all Americans and friends of American food. Two days ago a new American restaurant opened. It's called the "Taste of Texas". Today I walked by and noticed, that all waiters were dressed like cowboys. So I suppose, they will serve authentic American food.
Location: At the Chiang Mai - Lamphoon Rd. opposite the Mae Ping police station. It replaced the restaurant Pizzamania.

It seems to me, that the situation has improved recently. Yesterday I was in town, and it looked quite busy. Most places had a lot of customers. Maybe we've reached the end of the tunnel.

thx steve
to make this topic more Chiang Mai specific. Are there any places in C.M. where this job will be done with good quality and price?
-
@Mc Griffiths
Glad to hear that. It's probably the best place in Chiang Mai to hear Rock and Blues Music.

"Photoshop & some other similar software will allow you to make a positive image from the negative"
As far as I know Photoshop is a very expensive software. As it is directed to professionals, it will certainly cost hundreds dollars or more at least.
Is there any freeware or shareware around, which serve the same purpose?
-
Is the Guitarman still open? I passed by a couple of times, but it looked very closed to me. I admit it was in the afternoon.
-
In a couple a photo shops they also are offering to scan negatives. What sense does it make to scan a negative? Is it possible to create from a scanned negative a real photo?
And if yes, how is the quality?

Well, it' s a fact. There is no good German food in Chiang Mai. The "Hofbräuhaus" near the night bazaar is German only by name. That also applies to the "Bierstube" at Moon Muang.
In my opinion there's only one good German restaurant all over Thailand. That's "Bei Otto" in Bangkok. By the way they also are making probably some of the best cold cuts avaiable in Thailand. In Chiang Mai you can buy them at the Rimping near the Airport Plaza.
It seems, when it comes to western food, only the Italians are able to deliver food, which almost has the same standard, as you would get in Italy.

"Its called California Wraps"
I also liked this place and the food. It's located at the right hand side of the Rimping at Kad Farang.
If she also would sell beer, I would be a regular customer.
-
"Airport Authority's decision to raise landing fees appreciably" That's certainly one of the reasons. But another reason is as well the decrease of foreign visitors coming to Chiang Mai.
The demand for flights to Chiang Mai is shrinking. Since Chiang Mai obviously had and having its worst high season and low season for years.

Yesterday we were again at "Chez Marco" in Loy Kroh. This time I had the most expensive item on their menu: A filet steak for 240 Bt. I had it with a pepper sauce, which was excellent. Don't get me wrong. It's certainly not best steak you can get in Chiang Mai. But it's certainly the best in this price range in Chiang Mai.
My wife had a salmon carpaccio (150 Bt), which was fantastic. Paperthin slices of salmon, which were marinated and seasoned in way you hardly can top.
This place is run by a young frenchman, who is doing the cooking himself.
-
Have anyone ever been in this place, which is located on the the right hand side, when you are coming from the moat and going to the night bazaar via Loy Kroh. I don't recall it's name anymore although I walked by many times. It's something with beergarden and steakhouse? It's a very large place.

"Chiang Mai Grandview: 143 bht for lunch "
If I may say this: We have been there, too. Well, it's mostly a buffet with asian food. When we were there they only had one hot western dish. Also the starters are very limited concerning western food. The customers are mostly asian tour groups .
Why not spend 22 Bt more (with member card) for the buffet at the Empress Hotel, which has a much larger choice of asian and western dishes.
I don't want to say, that the Empress has an excellent buffet, but for only 22 Bath more you get a much better value than at the Grandview.
In the low price range the Empress is certainly the best.

Today at lunch time around 1 pm I passed by the building, where Dukes and Mc Donald are located. And since I got curious after all the postings here about Subway I decided to take a look at it.
I took me a while to find the narrow entrance to get into the building and unsurprised I saw that there was not even a single customer at Subway.
So I was wondering, why someone, who probably lost a small fortune with Subway in Chiang Mai is going to open a addional branch.

"Examples of luxorous nice places to stay are:
www.horizonvillage.net or www.dreamcatchersbnb.com"
You must be kidding. These might be nice places, but they are far from everything. Staying there means to rent a car. There is no public transportation to these places. And who would like to drive 20 - 30 minutes to the city center anyway.
If someone likes to stay in a remote area, why not Chiang Dao? There are at least the mountains, the forrests and the caves.

At the Duangtawan Hotel there is mondays through thursday an asian-european dinner buffet. It's costing 199 B. ++ and is located in their italian restautrant at the groundfloor . The starters und desserts are quite nice. One can get a lot of italian cold cuts and some seafood like shrimps and mussels. But I skipped the main dishes.
