I buy them (three pack; red, blue and black) at either TescoLotus or Big C (can't remember which store).

They don't seem to stock them continuously, just a few times a year. Look in their stationary sections. If you don't find them this time, look again in a few months. It's hit and miss. I like Bic Biro's.

Thank you very much for the info. I will have a look.

It may perhaps be Tesco Lotus, as Tesco UK have them on their website.

Could be an answer. However, he is being cheated. I wonder who the right people to complain to are.

Perhaps dialling 1111 to complain about government services might help?

There's a mobile phone app covering that number as well, but the last time I looked it was only in Thai. It may have changed now.

I have a good friend who has been paying 2000 baht to Udon Than I immigration every 90 days.

He said he was made pay this after losing his temper and refusing to pay a tip of 100 baht.

What would people here recommend he do?

Don't lose his temper and don't be so gullible?

That's why I lied to the IO saying I hadn't been to the ATM and didn't even had one Baht on me. Refusing point blank won't help.

  4. Are Bic biros available in Thailand?

Yes, I know they're cheap. The last time I went back to the UK, I happened to bring one with me. It's still writing perfectly, but running low on ink - after five years.

The local brands here seem to work for a week or so, while automatically drawing intermittent lines as you write.

I'm not looking for an expensive pen, but a cheap reliable brand. Is there a national chain selling them, as I don't live in Bangkok?

I see there are some Bic lookalike biros on Lazada for example, but wondered if anyone has specifically seen any Bics?

Tesco sell them in the UK, but can't see them on the Tesco Lotus website here.

  5. Years ago I had arguments with Thais about ghosts.

I laughed at them and said if they could show me a ghost first-hand I'd give them 50,000 Baht.

Someone said I should go to a temple  grounds at night, and I would see one. When I laughed and asked them to take me to a suitable temple, another person chimed in: "You're a ferang, so you can't see the ghosts!"

Difficult to argue with that face-saving logic.

Another person said, "That's easy. Sit alone in a room at midnight, peeling an apple in front of a mirror. You will see one then."

The girl didn't talk to me for days after I laughed at her.

Not sure how they number the provinces and Amphoes. I would think it could be 01 and upwards for province and Amphoe. Alos I don't think a check sum would be 0.

The numbering is the same in every province.

The ISO numbering for provinces is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Thailand

for 9-1001- the 01 is always amphur muang, but you need to look up other amphurs per province individually.

Having said that I don't know if BKK is an exception regarding the 01.

I seem to remember KhunBENQ is pretty good on the checksums? Perhaps the RAMA 9 ID could be an exception anyway.

That does not appear to be a atual ID number issued by an Amphoe. The digits on it do not match up to one. It is likely only a tax identification number (TIN) that the revenue department issues to those that do not have a ID number.

At one time even Thais were issued a TIN until the regulation were changed so that a Thai ID number is used.

    That's interesting UJ.

You obviously know more about it that me. I don't live in Bangkok, but without looking it up, I assumed in the 9-1001- part, 10 was BKK and 01 was amphur muang, but I don't know if BKK follows the same as the rest of the country.

Or is there something else I've missed?

Maybe somebody just made a mistake on Wikipedia. A few months ago somebody changed the title of this paragraph from digit "0" to digit "9"

Here is some other source: http://region1.prd.go.th/ewt_news.php?nid=17958

This source says 9 means royal family

That seems to fit in with the tax return envelope. All I know is that was how it was described when I saved the image.

Baffling that different sources have different ideas though.

  9. I hope this is the correct forum to ask this.

In the past there's been some discussion about the first digit of Thai ID cards.

What I can't find anything about is '9' as the first digit.

For some reason I thought it was reserved for the royal family, but last week I saw a photo of someone from the south arrested for something or other, along with a photo of his ID, which had '9' as the first digit.

Second point is about foreigners who have gained Thai nationality. That is an '8' first digit. The photo of a card I saw was a pink ID card, not the blue Thai card.

Does that mean only a Thai by birth will ever have the blue ID card?

This is the page listing some of the details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_identity_card

The OP is correct, 090 is a Nigeran cellphone prefix.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_numbers_in_Nigeria

If 0909 were the first digits to be shown, you would assume it's a a True Move mobile number.

If the call wasn't answered, how can the OP be sure it was from Nigeria?

If for some reason the 'presentation number' is not being displayed in it's entirety, then no one can say where it originates from.

However, if it displayed +234-909...., then yes originates from Nigeria.

All assuming no one has spoofed the presentation number - which could be possible.

The IDD code 234 is for Nigeria. A number starting 09 is a Thai mobile number...

Sent from my ZX81 using a dial-up modem.

Perhaps it's a Nigerian living in Thailand?

P.S. ZX81 - remember it well. 32K RAM expansion port, 300 Baud modem - oh happy days!

Very true , happened to me !!
Got passport certified at British Embassy and translated at MFA, also translation of birth certificate at MFA , both requested by Amphur.
Was then asked to produce certified translation of Decree Nisi/Absolute ( and this was only for the yellow house book remember, not for marriage ! )
    Gave up !!
To be honest, no real need for the yellow book for me, unless I can’t get a certificate of residence from immigration to renew DL ( some reports of immigration not issuing COR’s ) then I guess it’ll be another trip to Embassy emoji20.png
    Amphur Bang Pa-in .

Have you tried phoning any of the following:

Office Of the Ombudsman on 1676

Bureau Of Registration Administration (BORA) on 1567

No idea if there’s English speakers at either, so a Thai speaker would obviously be best.

I’m probably preaching to the converted here, but BORA are legally obliged to register people living in Thailand (Thais and foreigners) with a housebook, and cannot refuse.

I don’t know if more recently there is a requirement for MFA certified docs? I took my passport to a local registered English School and they provided the passport details page translated into Thai.

OK, I know this is second-hand: I read on TV in the past someone phoned the Ombudsman due to a Chonburi amphur refusing point blank to issue a yellow house book. 24 hours later he received a phone call from the amphur asking him to go and apply for it.

I got my wife to call BORA above after I had an initial refusal. They told her the documents I needed.

We also took a copy of the requirements from BORA to the amphur and made sure they saw we had the two department names and phone numbers above written down too. We thought then it would be more difficult to refuse, if they realised we knew something about the process.

We still had grilling from the head of house registrations as to why I wanted a housebook. She asked why (at the time) we weren’t married. I said it wasn’t a requirement for a housebook, which she begrudgingly accepted.

Worked out in the end though.
