  1. Now, having said that....

Being a person who supports a different approach to the worldwide drug problem than the "war on drugs"approach, I expected an interesting read when I saw the headline for this "editorial".

Whoever wrote this "editorial" should be sent home for the day. What a lame piece of writing. It regurgitates a few old facts that we know already, refers to the report from the LSE, but does not provide any information from it or link to it for reference.

What a bunch of useless, boring drivel.

  2. Thai military are a blessing to save a land from corrupt politicians who steal from farmers God has blesses Thailand with a coup so that the mess can be cleaned and the people made free again AMEN

You really don't understand Thai Society if you think that another coup will solve the problem! It is only going to prolong the misery!

So what's your solution? Let the kids continue to fight over the donut in the sandbox? That's been going on for a long time now. Really. Tell us how you see a solution happening. It was going to get violent. You think that letting them scrap it out to the point of civil war would be the answer?? I don't understand your perspective. If you are sitting patiently waiting for them to "work it out" and "compromise" through "seeing the other perspective" then it is you that does not understand Thai society. You piss off a Thai, you have made an enemy for life. That's Thai society. How are they going to work it out? They don't have the skills.

  3. And after all of this, in a few years or so, the next election will bring the same people to power. And as a true democrat that is the only thing that counts.

The miltairy should be kept miles away from power, as the are absolutely unfit for the task and are not legally entitled to it.

I hope the Thai people will keep their right to decide who governs them, as they have shown time and time again, it isn't the people now running the show.

In many democratic countries the majority of the populace is inept and unqualified to vote..in Thailand even more so. Cause the overwhelming majority of people cannot think for themselves, well, they are unwilling to think, culture and lack of proper education, its all a no brainer to have democracy in Thailand. Let the military sort it out, ie, and within a decade its same same again. Only until......some righteouss person with a vision stands up, and dares too as well, nothing will change. The pot of cash is not big enough for political parties to find the middleground....shades of grey.

To benalinia .... this is a very cynical view ...and a hit into the face for every Thai citizen who is trying to run his life under worst circumstances...Who do you think is able to vote ??? I agree to the lack of education , but these people are not to blame for this.Who is a qualified voter in your kind of view ?? Someone who finished High School ??? But ..... even in High School they are only taught the same old BS ..., forget it . I say that everybody is qualified to take his personal choose of what is offered to him , maybe he will become disappointed soon , may be not. There is a great lack of education in Thai schools , even if I don`t live in Thailand , I notice this everyday talking to my Thai wife. She holds a University degree , but she does know so little ...so who is the one to blame for this ???? Who wants the people to stay "dumb" and without knowledge how they could change their lifes... As sjaak327 told , the next election will bring the same people to power ...., again and again. I agree to his view , that military should be kept be kept miles away from power , as they have only learned " I shall do what I am ordered to " . The majority of Thai people ( in my kind of view ) lives a life without perspectives .. I hopefully await a person who is able to change this , I would wish that the Reds could form a new party , without the Shins ., ..As a sum up I think that every person in a democracy should ( and must ) use his right to vote , even if others condemn him of being too dumb for this.

Benalinia may be cynical, whereas you are extremely naive. People who look at and speak to the truth are often labeled as cynical or negative.

The fact is that democracy is a farce. The system in Thailand is no different than most places on the planet that claim to be "democratic". Voting, as it is called is the thing that people think is going to change their country whereas it really is the thing that maintains the status quo. Few people understand this. Voting isn't going to change anything until corruption is gone. And that is not going to happen.....anywhere. Thailand, I think is an example of the people really believing in democracy, all the political parties are extremely corrupt, and the people have chosen the one party that appears to do the most for them, even if he is giving scraps in one hand and pillaging with the other. They get something from him...in their eyes.

So you people tell me, just what voting is going to change in this country. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. You don't have to answer. You people that stand on a soapbox and go on about democracy and our right (or theirs) to vote crack me up. We are a world of sheep led by wolves, and you don't even know it. That's the sad part.

  4. Last year we had 4 rai ploughed, Ford 8210 4 discs,500 bart / Rai,a lot of people said " pang mark",expencive, and he made a crap job, this year still think 450 bart /Rie.

Amazing the country wide variation in prices.

Wow. Can't imagine anyone doing that. Were the people surprised that he did a bad job? First pass uses a lot of fuel if you do a nice job. People are funny.....they want it now, good, and cheap....you can't have all three.

  5. I had a similar experience with teak and posted it a while back, things never go they way they do on the calculator. I do have a really good small chain saw that we use like crazy, it's a Stihl.

"it's like getting pecked to death by ducks" is exactly right!

Watch out for knockoff Stihls. Lots of them around. Managed to snag one myself. I should've known better. It was too cheap. I curse it every time I use it.

  6. Oh, BTW pre made 5/8 " dripline output is about 2 litres per hour per drip. You can buy it in different drip spacings of 10, 20 or 30 cm. Alternatively, if your trees are widely spaced you can run PE pipe/hose and punch your own holes at your required spacing and plug your drippers into that. It really depends on how you design your system and what your requirements are. Pre made drip "tape" rather, it is called, is cheap and easy, but the spacing of the holes may be too close for your needs. So the project gets a little more expensive.

  7. Thanks Canada, I think I can fill in a few blanks now. The bowl is fairly steep, so the run is short. I said the height is about 15 meters, what I should have said was that is as high as I will plant the tea at first. The entire bowl is about 30 meters elevation.

I do not need a well, I am building a dam on a small stream about 300 meters away. The pond will be filled by gravity feed through a pipe.

I would love to know how to work out how much drip line I can run on one set. I don't know how much water comes out of each nozzle/hole. and i do not know how water will be coming out the 2 " inch pipe at elevation. But I think it will have to be trial and error. Also, i might not be able to use the iron buffalo (it might be knackered) so I also need to know what alternative pump motor combinations could work for me, and what horsepower is needed.

It's early days now, no equipment purchased yet, Thanks for your help so far

Are you saying that the bowl is 30 meters higher at the rim than at the centre? And it's only 5 rai. That's a cup, not a bowl.

So you are feeding the pond from the dam. So you are pumping water for irrigation from the dam as well. It would not make sense to pump it up from the pond. You should be able to use a cheap centrifugal pump run off of an iron buffalo. You can buy small diesel motor and pump set ups, I don't know how much they cost, you'll have to go check them out yourself. A centrifugal ump will cost about 4,000 baht for a new one. Rebuild the iron buffalo would be fairly cheap too. But cheap is a "relative" word. 5000 baht to me is cheap, to a broke Thai farmer it is way expensive. I am moving quickly in the direction of being a broke thai farmer so my definition of cheap is also moving.

Drip line length will depend on your water supply pressure. Set it up so you can easily adjust it with valves on relatively short runs or sections. All the drip stuff you can buy at Global. It's pretty cheap. There's that word again.

    Anyways, good luck.

  8. If it is bowl shaped, what is the radius of the bowl? And from the centerpoint to the outermost point, there is an increase in elevation of 10 meters? or 15?

Do you have a well already? Do you know any of the specs of the well? Has it been used before? Or did you just have it drilled? After you dig the pond, are you planning to pump that (pond) water up hill? How will you fill the pond? Rain? Do you or will you have a well to fill the pond and then pump it up from the pond or just direct to the top from the well and let nature take care of the pond.

    Lots of questions.

Drip irrigation requires pressure. You need to calculate your tank height and the resulting pressure achieved from that height. You can also build a tower which will put the tank even higher. Without calculating first, I'd venture a guess there will not be enough pressure for a drip system of any size.

I'm not an educated guy, okay? But i've been doing quite a bit of well drilling, pump fitting and installing, Thai irrigation, and then drip irrigation over the last 2 years. With the little bit of information that you have given, I would have a good well drilled (uniform diameter and deep) Thais call them "Boh Air" as the drilling rig uses air to pump the dirt and rock out of the hole. It'll cost you about 30,000 baht. Then I'd buy and have installed a "turbine pump". (You have a 6" well drilled and the pump will be 4".) Then I'd pump the water up the hill and then down the drip lines. No need for a tank at the top unless you have other uses for the water.

Just guessing, I'd say you have about a 50 meter radius which means you are pumping up hill for a distance of 50 meters and an elevation of 10-15 meters (this is where I get lost), but it's not a long run up or down. You should be able to use 2" pvc which matches the outlet on your turbine pump head. There is a science to figuring this stuff out and I was good at math in my youth, but that was a long time ago. Anyways, at the top of the run you install a "filter system" for your drip line and then run 2" pipe along the circumference of your "bowl" with 5/8" drip line running downhill off of that. It's pretty easy actually. And the parts are all cheap aside from the well and pump. The bonus of the pump is that it is not going to get stolen, and you just roll your iron buffalo up to it, run a belt to it, fire your motor up and you are pumping water. The turbine pump that I witnessed looked like it put out as much as my 2HP submersible which pumps 200 litres a minute. You also have a good well and pump to fill your pond, if it is not rainy season. No need for electricity, generators, submersible pumps which you risk getting stolen if you leave it out there.

Somebody else may be able to actually calculate your requirements whereas I cannot. I'm just guessing. Personally, I'd ask a lot of questions then just go ahead and drill a well and try it. I just re-read your post and see you are planting tea and you are terracing. So your configuration for drip will be a little different than what I am used to doing but it should still work, you do need to pump the water up the hill first with your 2" line and then downhill with the drip. Trying to drip uphill does not work well. I've tried that. You'll need to experiment to find the optimum length of drip line for your "running system". Then just open and close valves to achieve this as you move the water around. You may be able to drip 5 rai at a time but it will depend on total length of drip line. We usually run 2-3 kms at a time depending on how far we have to pump the water and how much grade.

Sprinklers. Hmm. May work better I don't know. They are less efficient than drip, and you water all the dirt, not just the dirt were your tea trees are. That means weeds. I know very little about sprinklers maybe someone can enlighten the both of us.

    Hope this helps.

  9. I'd say about 300 per rai for each pass of the tractor with whatever attachment you've got on it. That seems to be the minimum in our area and pretty much the standard. Out of the normal range is 3 disc first pass. That'll cost you about 700. Planting cane runs 1000.

Discing is priced per pass. You want a guy to run over the field a couple or a few passes....you pay "per pass". If it's just some areas (rather than the whole field) that need more than one pass, you could make a deal with guy to do that.

  10. fallow land

fallow land, cropland that is not seeded for a season; it may or may not be plowed. The land may be cultivated or chemically treated for control of weeds and other pests or may be left unaltered. Allowing land to lie fallow serves to accumulate moisture in dry regions (see dry farming) or to check weeds and plant diseases. As a method of restoring productivity, rotation of crops is now preferred to fallowing, which is considered wasteful of humus and nitrogen.

  11. I would like to ask the OP how he came to own 5 rai of land and managed to become a farmer in the South of Thailand?

If the OP is conducting all his business legitimately here in Thailand, than fine, but if not, than this is one of the main reasons why the visa regulations are tightening up for all the ex-pats living here.

I suggest we behave like gentlemen on here and give the other posters the benfit of the doubt. I also doubt that problems with back to back tourist visa abusers have anything remotely to do with this situation.

You are running on a misconception. It is because of the illegal land and property financial backers using Thai upfront names and the illegal business owners many who are contravening the prohibited professions acts for foreigners that I and many like me are placed under more scrutiny here and it is the illegal workers that is one of the main reasons for the now restrictions on visa runners.

In order to assist the OP with his inquiry all I have done is asked him a simple couple questions, how does a farang manage to own 5 rai of land and become a farmer in Thailand? His answer maybe a help to others who are considering purchasing land and working in agriculture here.

No. You have done absolutely nothing to help the OP with his inquiry. Your line of questioning is baiting and off topic.

  13. I had 8 old palm trees removed from around our house.because they were an absolute mess & created a bigger mess around them with their fronds & nuts. These trees were about half meter diameter & 7+ meters tall. We paid 5000 baht each to have them cut down & hauled away. Unfortunately, they used chain saws & didn't remove the stumps.

Shop around for prices for removal as I feel I paid too much. However, I have read that the wood is tough on saws, & there is little market for the wood. In your case, it would be easier to bulldoze them down.

    Ouch!
