  1. Living in Chiang Rai we have a selection of hospitals , one for the local poor people , one for Christians , one for the more wealthy and one for the Military . There is a new hospital also but one minute its open and the next its closed , no one seems to know if it is just waiting for the population to increase more before it opens or to be used incase of a natural disaster .

What I have found since living here in Chiang Rai is that if you use the most basic of hospitals here , the Chiang Rai Hospital , you normally get good service at a reasonable price , the down side is the waiting as its normally packed out and even if you are admitted for anything , you can end up out in a corridor due to lack of bed spaces . The Doctors seem to run from one hospital to the next , doing so many hours in each hospital with the odd stalwart holding the fort in most while the others do the running about .

The cleanlyness in the Chiang Rai hospital needs a rethink on how to keep the place clean . Last year I had an operation on my thumb and while waiting in the operating room , I noticed that the place wasnt very clean . The theatre doors were wide open for all bugs and flys as well as any dirt particules in the air to come and go as they wished . I spotted several Mozzies flying about while laying there . Surely in all medical practice hygiene is or should be number one . I find that even being in northern Thailand it is just unacceptable for sloppy management resulting in too many infections because of poor health and hygiene standards.

The Overbrook Hospital , the so called Christian hospital is another where money seems to make the wheels go round , and that they are very happy to see paying customers and from my own experiences here tend to add anything they can to the bill even though maybe its not really needed. If any of these hospitals want to take me to issue on my views please do , but I suggest you get your hospitals in order before you do.

The Kasemrad SriBurin Hospital used to be the No1 Hospital in Chiang Rai a few years ago . Most foreigners living here would tend to go there because they had the better facilities for operations and medical equipment along with a more senior experienced team of doctors .

However on my recent trip here I have noticed the lack of care by the nurses and the doctors not really willing to listen to the patients concerns .

I found them too interested in trying to sell me a presidential suite for my hospital stay , trying to sell me insurance , umpteen offers of a massage and very expensive food. I was impressed with the cleanlyness of my 3500 bht a night room , I had more time with the cleaners in my hospital room than I did with actual medical care from the nurses who seemed to keep as far away as possible . The room had a Tv (no English channels only thai ) and breakfast not included . There was also aircon in the room and my own private bathroom , (bring your own towels ). It would have been cheaper for me to stay in a 5* Resort in the city and commute there daily for treatment if I could have . Requesting more Meds when the pain got so severe I was screaming in bloody agony went on deaf ears . The nurses said I couldnt have any more than the Dr had prescribed and I had had my limit . With me threatening all sorts to the nurses on what I would do if they didnt get a <deleted> Dr on the phone and get me more pain killers , eventually some one did make a call and after 30 agonising minutes more pain releif was given . This is very poor medical care. In the end I was so peeeeeed off with the nurses , the Dr's, the over charging and lack of any care whatsoever , I discharged myself , without any assistance from any nurses or even a heartless goodbye , I was just left to stagger out on my own after major surgery to my abdomen .

Money is all these places seem to worry about , if you have got it , spend it on them , then there is a good chance you will be taken care of . If however I did have enough money I would not be or stay in ANY of the poor standard hospitals in Chiang Rai , get to somewhere other than here .I paid cash for my treatment and I am sure they didnt like that method of payment as if by insurance I expect the bill would have been alot higher , but my bill was nearly 3 times more than what I was told when I asked how much my treatment would cost . When I disputed this bill , the senior nurse of the hospital told me I was only informed of the amount of deposit I needed and not the overall cost , TOTAL LIES .

What I would like to know is if there is any real hospital care anymore or is it all about money money money . I am sure many of you who have had top end insurance with stays in the best Thailand has to offer will no doubt be full of praise . Pay out of your own pocket for the service you are getting , is it really worth what you are paying for ? Where are the good , non expensive hospitals that pride themselves in the health and care of the patient and warrent being called true medical proffessionals ??

  2. Can anyone recommend an area where I can go , spend all of my hard earned cash , get tottally wasted and still have a good time , without remembering a thing the next day ? My intention is to get a few honeys to show me the ropes and let me play away until im blue in the face . Seems like a pretty nice way to go out with a Bang.

  3. I bought what I was told was herring at Makro and also at Big C, I made my own pickled herrings . The outcome was terrible , even though I used a good recipe online , the fish just wasnt the same , so I presume they wernt herring after all . Most fish sold here are farmed river fish and not good to use and as for the sea fish , very limited on what you can buy . There are a few suppliers in Pattaya , Phuket and possibly BKK where you can buy tubs of herring that have been imported . Best bet is to ask at any restaurant from Scandenavia , Holland or Belgium where they buy there herrings they have on the menu . Several places such as friendship , rimping and Villa markets are now stocking jars of rollmop herring and bismark herring, abour 350bht for 500grm

  4. Hard to know what to say, but I can't just pass this thread by without saying anything.

I never knew you personally, and in truth, we rarely agreed on things here, but you have always been one of the most knowledgeable, entertaining and definitely rememberable guys on this site and I hope that like your previous "goodbye thai visa" thread, this also turns out to be a false alarm.

    Best of luck mate.

    Thanks Paul888, I hope the same .

  5. As some of you are aware from my bitching about Overbrook Hospital lately and the big bill that I had I decided to go to the Hospital - SriBurin as Overbrooks Hospitals Dr's couldnt commit to anything that was wrong with me as in my opinion they didnt have a clue.
I went for tests at SriBurin and gave them all the paperwork from Overbrook to look over as well . I was called in today at 9am and given some grave news . I have category 4 cancer and I have to have possible life saving surgery today , if I dont I will die . I was given 30 minutes to compose myself and then gave them permission to operate . The chances of my surviving the operation due to the size of the tumor are slim but the Dr has said he will do what he can. If I do survive the operation then I will have Chemo but he says its possibly doubtful it will help and then there are the secondary cancers that can spread around the body .
So I would just like to say to all of my friends Old and New on this Forum , and other forums and to my personal Thai and Farang friends , thankyou so much for the fun times and for your friendship in the 9 years I have lived here .
I am quite sad that I didnt even have chance to have a party to say goodbye or even to go to my 2nd Home of Jetyod Road to say goodbye to all my lovely lady friends and owners of the bars and restaurants I have used over the years .
I wish you all well for the future and live your lives to the full .
Thankyou so much for being my friends , I think if there is an after life , I will try and remember you all .
    Goodbye

  6. There are several VW restorers on the Super Highway heading North . You can see old caravanettes parked out front , rusted away etc. Im not exactly sure of the location but I know they are there . Just take a slow drive past the dealers on both sides . If I can remember exactly where they are then I will post as update .

  7. Thank you for your concern over my finances. First I should worry that my meager pension will not cover my monthly expenses; now you're giving advice as to which money market / bond fund I should deploy a fraction of my total account. You always say what will happen with the young Thai girl when my or someone else's money runs out -- now I'm crowing about my largess. Maybe you could use some counseling sooner than later.

I am offering a counselling session for you , 5 days per week , 4 hours per day at the knock down price of 3,000 bht per 4 hours . I am feeling very generous with this offer and if you would all like a group session , I will throw in a few ladies to assist biggrin.png

  8. When you have had your fill of all the young beautiful girls with wonderful bodies and your money has nearly gone , then its time for that age gap to decrease . The older men , lets say 40 up dream of being here for all the fun they can have with the 18+ girls , all at a price . I dont think I have ever met a man over 40 who isnt paying for the company . When you are tired of the bar scene or the demands of a young girl its then time to find that really down to earth woman closer to your own age who wont , possibly , nag you to death for a new phone or motorbike but will actually care about you . She doesnt want to be alone all her life either , so thats the time to really settle down . If on the other hand you feel like a five finger shuffle from a bit of totty , dont do it on your doorstep, make sure you go out of the province , word of mouth is faster than an email here .

  9. So if a - say - British national were to overstay in Brunei, would he get the same treatment or it this just for "undeveloped" countries like Thailand?

As a British National you would be treated the same I think. If I had over stayed and the cane was given to me for my punishment , I would agree to it and accept it , rather than spend any amount of time in any of the jails there . Believe me , the cane is a better choice and you may actually like it biggrin.png
