  1. I see from time to time local villagers out in a boat, maybe you can borrow theres or at least inquire where to rent one . If sitting on the grass verges, beware of snakes, they like the odd drink now and again .biggrin.png

  2. Yes come on fella's, try to keep on topic.

As you can all see, any posts that don't involve yogurt will be deleted.

No further correspondence will be entered into.

    I love yogurt, yum yum.

I totally agree with you Will that we should stay on topic, no need to discuss anything other than what the thread was about . Many on here

can go on and on about absloultely nothing , especially when it has nothing to do with the topic, as already mentioned in other posts . As for yoghurt , Yum Yum x2

  3. MrE

Not sure you even know yourself what you actually want ? You state you have been in Phuket for 10 years and now here in Chiang Rai . You have a retirement visa that is due for the 90 day reporting . Then in Septmeber your retirement visa is up for renewal , why would you even consider wanting a tourist visa if you have a retirement visa ?

You cannot get a tourist visa from the border .

To renew your current visa , take all of your documents to the Immigration office before your current visa expires and if all of your documents are in order for the retiremnet visa , then the renewal will be issued . If you dont have the requirements and cannot get a renewal of your current visa , then you will only a couple of options. 1. Do the 15 day border run(3times) 2. Get a bus to Nong Kai from Chiang Rai , cross into Laos and visit the Thai consulate and apply for a double entry tourist visa . 3. Leave Thailand and fly back into Thailand for a 30 day stamp in your passport .

As others have said, there is the VISA FORUM to get all the information you need.

  4. I don’t know.ermm.gif I see Yolida yoghurt on the shelf almost every time I shop there. Only once did I not find what I was looking for. I think they do a pretty good job of stocking the shelves, considering our less than central location.smile.png

Cyclone Mahasen brings rain to Thailand’s eastern and western parts

BANGKOK, 15 May 2013 (NNT) - Residents in the western and eastern parts of Thailand have been warned to brace for more heavy rains as cyclone Mahasen makes landfall in the region.

The Meteorological Department reported that the cyclone is making landfall in Bangladesh tomorrow, bringing more storms to provinces in the East and West during the next couple of days.

At least seven people have died and nearly 3,000 left homeless in Sri Lanka after the cyclonic storm caused heavy rains in the north and eastern parts. The tropical cyclone has developed in the Bay of Bengal over the last few days.

In the East, isolated thundershowers are expected in a number of provinces which include Chonburi and Trat. Strong winds can generate up to 2 meter-high waves.

The eastern and northern parts of Bangkok and its vicinities will also be hit by heavy downpours, where the average temperature hovers around 35-38 degrees Celsius.

Not sure why they think the Cyclone will be affecting the areas they have stated , Bangladesh and Myamar are no where near B angkok , Trat and Chonburi and nowhere near the path ?

Considering you live so far from town I dont suppose you visit Tops like many of us in Town do. Sadly the stock of farang food is limited and many items are not a requirement , such as tinned bullet peas that sit on the shelf for months on end, yet popular stuff like Waitrose Dark Chocolate Digestive Biscuits , as soon as they are on the shelf they are sold and takes many weeks for them to come back , as it does for Branston Pickle , mayonaise , Poppadoms in the curry sauce section , Plain natural Yoghurt and fresh cream to name just a few.

Also on the subject of food in Central , the Japanese Bakery next to Tops has good bread but lately they seem to be running out by about 3pm .Today a friend told me afte rI informed him they had no bread again , that he spotted 2 Thai men buying ALL of the bread , about 20 loaves . Maybe the Thais are getting the taste for it now .

  6. I think the service has improved over the years but occassionally for no real reason the service becomes near on useless . I am with 3BB and I have had many an issue with them here in the Rai and very heated debates with their head office in BKK . On my last heavy handed converstaion where I stated that their internet service was a sham due to over subscription and not enough bandwith to cover the amount of users and telling them I am Ex-IBM Global Operations leader , I know what I am talking about . The very next day , my service was totally restored , my internet connection never dropped, the speed was as fast as any I have experienced using and has been like this for the past few months without failure , even in bad weather . Last night however, the DNS server crashed and was out of use for several hours , when it was back the service is usable - just a bit slow .

For those living out of town I do sympathise with you , being out in the sticks has never been good for connections and sadly being so far from town little is done to restore connectivity .

  7. I have recently renewed my 5 year car licence in Chiang Rai . Along with all the paperwork you have to submit , I also gave them my yellow Tabian Ban book . That wasnt good enough , they wanted the Blue one . As the blue one was not available to me , the Ex has it , I had to get the letter from Immigration . Once that was all in order, I had to then sit through the 1 hour video , all in Thai but with English subtitles . Sitting in the heat watching that and reading ( without my glasses ) as I was not informed this was going to happen , you soon feel drowsy and sleepy.

Prior to watching the video , I had the colour chart to read and get right , followed by the brake test .

When all of the above was completed I then has to sit at a computer and answer 30 mulitple choice questions .I failed the test 2 times and had to return the next day after studying the highway code book again . The first test I got 21 questions right and failed. The 2nd test I got 22 and failed .

The next day I took the computer test again and got 23 questions right and PASSED.

The highway code book is not the problem , I got all of those correct but the other questions such as : When do you use your headlights (a) In thick Fog (B) in heavy rain © in the day time (d) ???

I answered (B) in heavy rain. The corrct answer is (A) which to all of us drivers is totally wrong . Using your headlights in thick Fog makes it even worse and only the small near to the groung fog lights should be used .

There are many questions like this that in anyone elses right mind the answers YOU give are correct , but here in the land of ignorance, they dont want to listen to thick farangs .

When I passed the test I then said about my motorbike , as I had submitted 2 applications forms . I was then told I had to repeat everything I had done for the car test , plus 4 hours driver training on a motorcycle . I have had a full motorcycle licence from the UK for many years and my last big bike was a YZF1R Thunderace, 1000cc . So I think I will pass on the motorcycle test here and use my Ignorance when I produce my full UK Bike licence if I am ever asked , or maybe show my Thai driving licence.

I asked WHY I had to go through all of that after already having my Thai car licence for over 6 years and they said , its to cut out the corruption . Now everything has to be computerised , as if that is a fail safe against corruption , hahahahaha. Oh well !!

  8. Thankyou DogRescue for your reply . It would have been far clearer if you had said all of that in the original post . The OP is open for debate as we have clearly shown you here but we are not here to pick fault with you or the good work that this organisation does . I wish you all well and success in your on going mission .

  9. I have several questions for DogRescue .

    1. Since when has excess baggage been Free ??

    2. You want someone to take the dog to the new Owner / Adopter in Germany from Thailand .

    3. If the dog is travelling to Europe , the dog will be quarentined first , so how can the new owner collect it ?

    4. If the dogs new owners live in Frankfurt , then Frankfurt is where the dog should be delivered . I cannot see the owner

of a recued dog picking it up in Hanover , if they LIVE in Frankfurt . The distance between Frankfurt and Hanover is about

370 km . Something is not right !!!

    5. You maybe a decent rescue organisation but your organising skills and request on here dont seem to be that organised .

    6. I agree with Breadbin , Dogs can be used as Drug mules and something ALL people thinking of transporting Anything for someone else

should be taken in to consideration .

  10. My experiences in all are , Overbrooke , not so good and the tot up everything possible to add to you bill , even if you dont need it. Christian hospital ? I think not .

SriBurin Hospital , were lacking in English skills but its not their fault is mine , for not learning much Thai . The Doctor DID speak very good English and knew what he was talking about and asked me how I was so knowledgable , I said I am educated .

BEST hospital I think for me , Chiang Rai Hospital . Very helpful , very polite , quick service , even though I did have to wait about one hour to see somone one time . They seem to care about the patient and not the money that others can screw out of you .

  11. Everyone has a different level of spending here . Some people I know spend in excess of 100,000 bht per month , while others on the lower incomes can just about survive here on 15,000 bht per month .

A typical house rental in the city will cost between 5 - 8,000 for a 2 bedroom, some with furiniture in the price. Electricity bills if you have and use Air-Con , Tv, fridge etc will be about 1-3000 bht per month .

Food , if you eat Thai food all the time , then you can eat for about 100 bht per day , 3000 bht per month .

The majority of people living in the Rai are of retirement age and get pensions or have brought enough money with them to maintain their lifestyle

    they are used to.

I think to live simply but not to excess you will need a minimum of 15-20,000 bht

  12. I agree Gary , for me Kanchanaburi is the hottest place I have been in Thailand and it was about this time of year I went there 13 years ago , me and my tribe fried big time waiting for the train to take us over the Iron and bamboo bridges . Not been there since, however while I was there I paid my repsect in the war cemetary , its good to see someone was taking rally good care of the place then .

  13. The burning looks like its started again . A strong smell of smoke now at 2am . With no rain expected for at least a week , some will make the most of it now the holiday period is over. With the very hot and dry weather it makes the burning so much easier .

  14. Its quite normal for this time of year (Songkran ) for the water presure to drop . My supply was at about 50% of the normal flow this year , for a day or so , then went back to normal . It has been known in the City for water to actually be turned off when too much domestic water is used just for throwing out in the Soi . Thats when you see water tanker trucks , taking polluted water from ponds, the river , or anywhere else just to distribute amoungst those with buckets and bins at the side of the soi's playing in the water festival .

Some villages take their water direct from rivers such as the Maekok , but when the water level drops below the collection pipe , then no water can reach the village purifying tanks and therefore no one in the village gets any water , until someone has a brain wave and fixes the problem .

Other reason can be road works ,new pipe installation or repair , new pumps being fitted or old ones being repaired etc . It is also quite hot at the moment so I expect many are taking extra showers to keep cool . If the supply is low , then they do from time to time ration the supply .

If you are still having problems , speak to the boss of your village or anyone who can tell you the reason why its off . There is also the water company in town to ask.

I think you will find that this may have something to do with it , and we all maybe getting a lesser supply soon . Just make sure your buckets and bins are full when the supply is on , then you can at least have a jungle shower :

  15. No rsin for st lesst a week. It wss only 36C uoday in the shade. But its gets alot hotter upstairs! Whens the Winchester Bsr opening? Anyone know?

I think Don is the man to ask , but maybe he will close again or maybe he wont tongue.png

  16. One has to laugh about those up north. Complain about the smoke when burning , now it is too hot.

If only it was 37 in BKK. We would all be so happy. Better than 38-39!

Believe me , 37 or 38 Degrees inside my house is no fun , especially when it 46 -50 Degrees outside .

Air con is a must for sure .

  17. Do we need the rain in the RAI ? I hope it comes soon , the last few days have been pretty hot but today , WOW.

Temperature inside my house is 37 C, outside its off the scale . Not sure if its a record heat today but it really feals like it .

One weather report stated that its going to feel like 46-48 c , I think it feels higher than that .

Anyone else suffering ? Thank his holyness of what ever religion you support for AIR-CON.

    I sweat in Peace .
