  1. I have been around all of the electronic shops in Chiang rai , hehehehe, Big C , Tops and a few others . There are laptops everywhere but not many tower Pc's , are they being fased out ?

Getting somone to explain anything here in English is near on impossible , so I am back to you guys for help.

I have on my exsisting pc a pentium 4 processor , so what is the difference between the pentium 4 and these new i3 core ? processors and what size should I get compared to the pentium 4 ?

My local c drive has 19.5 Gb , local d drive has 29.2Gb and the local e drive has 25.7 , Does that mean my hard drive is about 75Gb ??

What size hard drive should I get ? Most of my current local disk space is full ? not sure why as I dont really have much on my Pc other than my music storage.

Ram ? no idea , but I would think I need some .

Anything to help me would be of great help .

I have found that the cheapest tower is about 10,000 bht and laptops at the lower end are about the same .

I want something that is fast , im not very patient , some bigger storage I think as my hard drive is nearly full I think ?

    please advise

    Many thanks

  2. Now that we have had some fun on this topic , has anyone got an update about him ?

Was he just released or sent to hospital etc ? or is it possible he is locked up , like that poor man in Pattaya

a couple of years ago . Mentally ill and just locked away and basically forgotten about . Lucky for that man in particular that someone got him out and shipped back to the UK or wherever he came from .

  3. The Smoke this evening is bad and riding into town tonight the visibility before nightfall was very poor. The mountains are clouded

with smog . I dont know where all this smog has come from as for the past weeks the weather here in Chiang rai has been very good.

There are alot of particles in the air also , so I think the toxic levels must be high already and the burning of my eyes tonight was very

    unpleasant.

Time for that trip to the beach again maybe but if I stay here the doors and windows will be kept closed as I think its only

going to get worse over the coming days unless we get some rain and wind .

  4. Many thanks for your input so far . I am still none the wiser really , just goes to show that teaching this old dog new tricks isnt such a good thing . I have looked on some sites with the top ten of laptops but its all gargon to me and have no idea really what its all about . One thing that did stand out though was as Tobias has said , all laptops will do what I need but that bit of information about HDMI and Good Graphics for watching Tv, I will make note of, also about Linux ? from Jsixpack.

I am not sure how to find out what I have on my Pc that I have now , eg hard drive, ram etc but I do know it has a pentium3 processor .

what size hard drive , ram , processor etc should I get ? Will I have to buy windows 7 or 8 or do they come already loaded as my tower came with windows Xp when I bought it . Are the ports on a laptop standard or do I have to ask for anythng to be fitted or upgraded ?

Thanks guys , your help is appreciated and sorry for my lack of knowledge , im definately in the past when it comes to technical advancement .

    Regards

    Sun.

  5. I have always had a tower Pcat home , when I travel I tend to just go to an Icafe rather than have to carry about a laptop with me along with all my other luggage . However, as my home pc is now 11 years old and falling apart , can anyone advise me on what laptop to buy as I will try a laptop for a change ..

I only used my tower pc for basic internet use and mail but would like to connect somehow to my Tv if possible as I like to watch online movies . I am not an expert in computers , so any advise would be appreciated .

    Thanks

  6. 650,000000 Bht of drugs and someone thinks a cartel is not behind this ? Can you imagine the amount of chemicals needed to produce all that Meth ? The specialist Chemists ? The workforce ? Not only the production of Methamphetamin / Ice but what about the Heroin and other forms of drugs .We are talking about a factory , a big factory . Have you seen the drug companies who are legitamate and the operation to make vast amounts of pills ? Then there is the transportation of chemicals into where they manufacture and then on completion the distribution . What about the work force , many people on site I would imagine. As for armed guards , absolutely. MONEY BUYS YOU EVERYTHING. Corruption at all levels paid for with drug money .

Who is behind it all is a mystery as its better not to know , however every now and again the king pins of the drug world are named and eventually through DEA/CIA and other agencies , they are caught or killed by rival drug lords.

Getting the drugs out of Myanmar /Laos maybe a problem as the skies will watched for aircraft if possible to use but due to having little or no airport in the northern reaches of Myanmar , taking the road is possibly one way of getting it out . I wonder how many shipments are sent via the river , or overland in Laos to another port of entry into Thailand.

What I would want to know is why that shipment of 650000000 bhts worth of drugs was stopped and a few henchmen killed in the process , I would have thought that to follow that shipment covertly to its destination would have been far better. Then they could possibly catch some bigger fish and not just the armed guard, was it a set up with the drugs cartels / police working together , possibly . 650Mbht seized with a couple of locals killed but who knows , maybe 20 Billion Bht's worth got in and was overlooked ?

I wonder if those drugs were meant for shipment elsewhere ?

Many drug busts are due to tip offs. Sometimes its real informants that pass the information but I would think there are quite a few instances of it all being a set up. Larger qualtities are getting in while the informed drug bust is taking place. However 650000000 bhts worth does seem to be an amount that someone is not going to be happy about losing .

  7. Mario , when I got married a few years ago , it was the only option for me to avoid the confusion of what to do etc , the lawyer was the best option for me . Also there was no other route other than to use the Ministry down in Bangkok and rather than try to go through all the red tape and the travel etc to BKK from Chiang Rai , I took the cheap and easy option of getting someone to do everything for me .

I think if you can speak Thai or the office you use has English speaking Thai's ( Hard to find in Chiang Rai ) then all well and good. Or of course take the option I did , pay a small fee and get a legal expert to take all the stress out of doing it yourself.

  8. If you are using a Lawyer in Chiang Rai , it is better to take a Thai with you as some lawyers spoken English isnt so great , so if your Thai friend can translate for you , you should be able to get what you need. I would suggest going to several lawyers offices , because from my own experience , some will rob you anyway they can by over charging for the service you require , for instance , a 400 bht fee for a Thai , turns out to be 4000 bht for the farang . Sadly the over charging is only because some farangs think they are getting a good deal compared to western prices and pay the price the Thai lawyer asks for . If you find the descent lawyer who doesnt over charge and gives you good service , keep him for everything you need. .

Shop around for the best deal . It could save you thousands of Baht if you find the honest lawyer .

One Lawyer tried to charge me 20,000 bht for 1 hours work . I said it was far too much money for what he needed to do for me . He said , no problem for you , you are a farang and rich !! When I protested that he was over charging me and not good to do , he relented and halved his fee to 10,000. I then said it was still too much money for what he had to do , so eventually he dropped his price to 3,000 bht after alot of protest from me .

I said to him , thankyou very much and I will come back in a few days when I am ready to use your services. I then left his office never to return again .

I did find another Lawyer who has since moved his office to somewhere in Soi Sangkhong, its not far from the traffic lights at Den Ha, about 500 metres on the left side of the road heading towards town. Sorry I forgot his name and do not have any contact details for him but I am sure you will find his office if you look . He charged me 1000 bht for what I needed doing , and was excellent in his service .

  9. what I had to do was get a letter from my Embassy/Consulate in Chiang Mai , stating that I was 100 % Single . As I was married before , I had to also show my Decree Absolute . I was then issued with the letter to confirm I was now free to marry again.

I then took that letter to a lawyer , his office was next to the consulate in Chiang Mai , who put the paperwork together and sent all the documents to the Ministry in Bangkok. About 2-3 later the letter stating I was allowed to marry again arrived at my home address. I then took my passport and the other documents etc from Bangkok to the Amphur Office in downtown Chiang Rai . After a couple of forms that had to be signed ,and the big marraige registration book , we were then married. I think we had to pay 200 bht to the Amphur office for out certificates of marraige.

Can I add, I let my wife keep her name and not take my surname . the reason for this is she is Thai and having a farang surname DOES make things very awkward for her. All her documentation for her life needs to be changed and a big pain in the Butt. Also , having a farang name puts her at the bottom of any list when it comes to needing something . I have several friends who advised me that this was the best route to take for her .

Good Luck to you for the Future.

  10. I forgot to add , that there does seem to be some very very rich people now living here in Chiang Rai , operating football clubs, resorts etc and dont seem to care about the flash cars they drive while others find it hard to eat on a daily basis . I know this is life and those have - have, those that dont wished they had.

However , I would like to see these very wealthy people with more money than they can spend , actually spend it on something really worth while. How about getting together , put your funds together , build a small hospital , with all the latest technological equipment , then fill the place with Western Doctors and nurses . Then maybe the local doctors and nurses can learn from the skills and medical experience of the western medical team , because that is much needed in Chiang Rai .

Give the people FREE care , free operations and the chance to have an improved life that they may not get from the hospitals here or because they dont have the money to pay for what they need.

Now that would be a good idea .

  11. Hi John.

Firstly , DO NOT SEND YOUR OLD PASSPORT with your application . What you do is make a copy of the photo page and that gets sent , not the passport , Thai immigration have outlawed the sending of passports to anywhere as they must remain on the person .

Once you have filled in the application form , make sure you have the correct sized photographs , it is very important that you do exactly what the application asks for.

When you have all the documents , put in an envelope , along with the visa payment details or BANKERS DRAFT CHEQUE , nothing else will be accepted , with the full payment for the passport renewal and the fee for the return shipping of the passport back to you . I believe they use DHL for the return shipment of the passport to you . All they need is the address of where the passport is to be sent .A self addressed envelope is to be sent with the application form so they can send the new passport back to the address you have stated on the envelope .

I then took my application to the post office and recorded delivery of it to the office in Hong Kong. I think the Thais call is EMS. About 2-3 weeks later I had my new passport delivered to my home , which I had to sign for .

Good luck , its not such a big deal to do if you follow what the application asks you to do .

  12. I have just returned from a trip to Pattaya and while I was there came across a restaurant that serves very very good food. The standard of the food was very high , the quality and freshness of the food served was superb. The restaurant is Swedish and the staff were a bit bemused as to why an Englishhman was eating there every day . I was impressed no end with the pickled herring and sea food dishes that I ordered , the pizza was better than any I have had from any Italien pizza shop in Thailand and the Steak was mouthwateringly delicious . The prices are competitive but the quality and cooking skills out do most places I have visited . Not sure if I break the rules by naming the place but its called the Globetrotter , it is situated behind the bars at the beach road end of Central Rd. I was using the Holland Cafe Bar (Central Rd )for my drinks and ordered through them , the restaurant is behind the bar and not visible from Central Rd or the small soi leading to the bar area of soi 7.

The menu they have is varied but mostly covers the food from scandinavian countries , if you have never tried it , give it a go , its going to be the only place I eat from now on in Pattaya on my future visits . Enjoy .

  13. It was great to see Roll Mop herrings (HOLLAND HOUSE BRAND 500gr Jars) for sale in the Villa Markets in Bkk. The price was a little steep but whats a few baht (350) to enjoy one of my favourte foods.

My next visit was to the Friendship Super market in Pattaya , they had them as well , only 320 bht for the same sized jar .

On my return North and stopping off at Rimping Supermarket in Chiang Mai , they had them as well but 400 bht for the same jar . It would be nice of all these market owners to try a little bit better in their pricing rather than screw as much dough out of us as they can . Without us half of their businesses would close . I hope someone takes note !!

Yes Chiang Rai is a beautiful province but many things change as the years go bye . Chiang Rai City is no longer the sleepy village it used to be , now it is growing a very fast pace with tons of construction , more and more people coming to live here , lots of traffic , yet still not as bad as some of the other major cities but it wont be long before congestion clogs up the place. I regard here as the jewel of Thailand that is no longer secret but I hope all that come here can live quietly and peacefully as most of us do and live out out days in our little bit of heaven - ( in the unreligious sence of staying somewhere tranquil and serene and has no regard to upsetting any religious believers of other faiths )tongue.png
