  1. Hi All.

I had a really good look around town , found more shops than I thought selling laptops but mostly their own brands

with a few major brands on sale as well , but very limited. I decided in the end to buy a tower ,its what I am used to and dont really

need a laptop when I travel , as I can always use the Icafe's when and if the need arises, Or buy a big back pack and take my tower

    with me , biggrin.png

I did speak to some friends here also for advise and those who had some computer skills were pretty much on the same wave length

as you all, on here . There were of course the odd Bill Gates's who turned out to know just as much as I do .

The tower Pc's are so very limited , even the big retail electrical stores only had 1 or 2 towers such as Acer and that was it .

However, most shops would build you a Pc to the spec you want and need . Most shops thrust several A4 sheets in my face with what they

had to offer , from the casing , mother boards, Ram , HDD etc etc ect but not knowing what any of them were other than what I have stated

I was in their hands for advise .

One shop I went into had a computer engineer that I recognised , who had worked before at another shop and had been to my house to

fix some problems I had . I asked his advise and bought from the shop he worked at , mainly as he speaks a little English and I can use him

in the future again to fix any problems I have. I bought from KVC.

What I ended up with was a nice tower case with transparent perspex to one side , so I can see all the parts in the case , with a nice red illuminated light inside , looks good.

The computer bits consist of :

    CPU: AMD A6-3650

    Main Board : GIGABYTE GA-A55M-DS2

    RAM: DDR3 1333 4Gb Kingston

HDD: WD 500 Gb SATA ABlue

    Display Card : GT 630 2Gb

    CD/DVD-RW LG 22xSATA

    CoolMaster Case

    OPsys : Windows 7

There are a couple of other bits but they are written in Thai but dont amount to much cash wise .

    Total price 13,000 bht

As it was already built in the shop, I was given a quick demo and it performed better than what I previously had and was

told it was as good as anything else on the market for the price. Not that there was much comparison here .

So far I am very happy with everything BUT Windows 7 to me is all over the place and it is not as user friendly as XP . It seems to take

you longer to get things done with W7. I will give it a couple of weeks to see if I can get used to it , or maybe I will dump W7 and go back to XP, unless of course you advise not to .

I know what I have bought wont be to everyones cup of tea and others will say I could have got this and that, but the main thing is, it is doing

what I want it to do.

Thanks again for you help and no doubt I will be back to ask other questions as and when .

My HDMI connection to my LG TV works very well , theres still a few issues I need to try and resolve but I will try myself first before asking the dummy question to you lot.

    Many thanks again .

  2. It was very cold at midnight last night , so much so that driving back to my home from the local tesco's , I was shivering . Admittedly I only had a T-shirt and shorts on but at this time of year it should still be warm at that time of night. The smoke was thick in the air , very strong smelling and could be seen dimming the street lighting .

  3. Read it and you might understand. They claim to be a retreat of polluted cities considering the current pollution levels around Pai/MHS at this time it's quite amusing at least for me.

Ah , I see , I thought it was an advert for the site so didnt read any of it , just skimmed through looking at the pictures , hahahahahaha.

  4. i have thumb a lift 2 times before. once on a motorbike & another in a car driven by 2 nurses.

I would not recommend thumbing a lift or even picking someone up who IS thumbing a lift.

The reason for this is you do not know the driver of the car or the motorbike who is giving you a lift.

You as a driver may feel you are doing a good deed by picking up that lovely lady or whoever but you do not know what they are carrying.

There is only a slim chance I know BUT they maybe carrying drugs . If the police stop you in the car

and a search is done and it is found to have drugs on board or on them , you will be arrested as an accomplice , same applies if the rider

of the motorbike is carrying .

A friend of mine was in a car that had drugs in it , he was unaware of this and at a police checkpoint the car was searched , drugs found , both arrested.

As he was only the passenger and unaware of the drugs as he did not know the driver , it didnt make any difference . The driver was given 24 years in jail and my frind got 8 years .NO PAROLE .

So , if you feel like saving yourself the cost of the bus fare or taxi or driving yourself via a hired car or bike , then the risk is ALL yours.

Many years ago when we arrived back from Aussie at Chiangrai Airport we always got the same taxi driver to take us home and back to the airport. We did this probably a dozen times and on one return trip he wasnt around at the airport. My wife asked other drivers where he was. We were told he was arrested for drug trafficing and he used to stash the drugs under his taxi seats. Bloody lucky we werent caught in the cab when he was busted. He did 8 years and got a Royal Pardon and now has a successful buisness in our village.

I wonder what the taxi drivers original sentence was if he completed 8 years time done before getting the pardon ?

  5. I recently made my own Pickled herrings . I went to Makro as some people mentioned that they were selling the fresh herring . I paid only 50bht per KG

very cheap . The only problem was the size of the fish were a little bit small but having never made pickeled herrings before I thought I would give it a try .

I had to de-scale the fish and gut them and then fillet the fish , oh my god , what a bloody job that was . Bones and more bones !! I had to resort to using tweezers

to pick out many of them and with my eyesight not being that great it was a challenge and a half and took me forever to do .

I bought a couple of air tight containers and the ingredients for the pickling liquer. I had searched online for what was supposed to be a good recipe and I followed

    every instruction.

After washing and drying the fish and my pickling vinegar had cooled down from the boiling point , I was ready to finish the job.

The liquer was a little bit sharp but I still went ahead with the recipe and marinated layers of fish and finely sliced onion into my

containers then adding the pickled liquer at the end until the container completely covered the fish. I then put in the fridge and left them

there until I was ready to try and eat them after a couple of weeks in the fridge.

When I tried them , they were terrible , the fish didnt taste anything like herrings , the texture was all wrong , the colour wasnt right either

but then again , im no fish expert . I only went by what the fish monger told me in Makro , in English , that the fish I wanted to buy

was herring .To me they also looked like herring . I had my doubts when I filleted the fish as the colour wasnt the white I expected but more

    of dark meat .

The end result was me throwing the lot in the bin and vowing never to make again , better to buy those jars from Friendship or where ever they are selling them .

  6. The term used by Thais to congregate us all in one pot rather than try to find out where we actually come from , is "farang". However , any Asean country

other than Thailand , the Thais do not call those people from , Cambodia , Laos , Malaysia , etc etc Farang , even though they are foreign .

Farang food is westernised food that WE have introduced here in Thailand and crave so much due to the very limited menu that the Thais eat., not only that but

I can eat bloody rice and noodles every day biggrin.png

  7. This is Thailand. The people speak Thai, not English. You live in France, they speak French, not English. Good luck ...

How very observant you are !! I dont live in France either !! English is also the language of the world by the way .

As I WAS speaking Thai it didnt make any diference . When I called 3BB HQ BKK , the lady I spoke with spoke very good English ,it was her choice

to speak that language from England , because in England they speak English but I did'nt expect her to talk to me in English because she is Thai and in Thailand ?

Very strange world we live in !!

While I am on the subject of 3BB, since hat call yesterday my internet connection has been excellent , I did not think it would last but

all day yesterday right up until I went to bed , not a single problem . Today so far same no problem at all ? Fingers crossed it lasts.

  8. Does anyone else have 3BB as their ISP ? I have had them for about 6 months and for me their service is diabolical .

The service for me has been up and down , but only for seconds at a time or for a few minutes but enough to screw up

what ever you are doing . On contacting 3BB , they say there is no problem BUT an engineer was sent ? He walked about , looked at the Modem , looked at my computer , didnt touch anything and ignored what I was trying to explain ( I am a Thick Farang and know nothing sort of look he gave me )

, he shrugged his shoulders and walked off .

The 20th time I complained,a another engineer was sent , he

didnt show up at all BUT the service picked up , no internet problems , fast connection and then back to square one again.

Yesterday and today I have had heated arguements with HQ BKK tryng to resloved the problem .

They, 3BB said " you are using the internet ? I said of course , that is why I am phoning you and complaining , Ah she said , you use the world wide web (hahahahaha)

I said yes I do , its called the internet . She then said , the internet package I have is only for looking at websites in Thailand and because I am looking and surfing the

web , I need to upgrade to their international package , so that I can surf the web, world wide .HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAbiggrin.png , i thought that was so funny I had to laugh alot

ove rthe phone with her to the point she hung up , hahahahahaha.biggrin.png

I cannot type my replies to her but I am sure she was red in the face , as I was.

Basically what I think it means as with most providers here , is that they over subscribe the service that they sell and the band width is not enough to cope with all the traffic.

At peak times the service can grind to a halt but for whatever reason as I said , the connection has been excellent since that phone call today .

I should have asked her if Thailand had any websites I could look at , ahahahahahahabiggrin.png

To conclude , from about 20 minutes from the last phone call , my service was brilliant , very fast , no glitches and has been running

so far up to now without any interuption at all .

I am sure it will be business as normal again tomorrow .

Wow, that's heavy - 8 years in the slammer for getting a ride hitchhiking. that's flat out cruel. Was that in Thailand? Meanwhile, the son of an important politician or millionaire businessman, can literally get away with murder.

Yes it was Thailand - Chiang Rai , the 8 years was done in the Chiang Rai prison .

  10. I dont think the levels of pollution will be far wrong whatever is said , we can basically guess from experience and thickness of haze but I only go by what others

tell me , seeing as a few members are on the money with the findings. If that rain is due next week , I hope there is alot of it .

  11. Over 350 this morning in CM, it looks like pea soup.

Thats 3 x the safe limit

In Chiang Rai city last night it was quite cold as was this morning , this is due to the sun being blocked out by the haze.

The city today , it was easy to see the smog , its coming in slowly and it wont be too long before it gets really bad.

The mountains were not visible at all as of 1 hour ago . No Idea what the level of pollution is but its not near the 350 mark of

    Chiang Mai yet .

  13. I have just finished eating my Stilton , compliments of a mate who brought some good stuff back from the UK for me , I also have a really nice glass of Dow,s Renown Port (porto ) of course , it is delicious . I am tempted at times to make a nice port sauce to accompany whatever I maybe cooking BUT , better to use a red wine I think and savour the Port , especially as its quite expensive here . A decent port will cost up or 1000 bht but in Mae Sai (North Thailand ), cross into Myanmar and use the duty free shops , you can get some Australian Port for about 600 bht a bottle , to me , it tastes like Sherry , hahaha , some may like like it . Dows Renown is 19% Vol just incase anyone wants to know .

  14. Spotted the Rain Plane today , maybe there's a plan to drop a ton of chemicals into the clouds ,forcing them to drop whatever liquid they have floating around in them.

Its quite the norm to see this from time to time , so maybe within a day or so , someone may get a shower in hope of clearing the air a little.

  15. Note the sensitivity of TV in airbrushing out the man's features while providing a link to the less puritanical Pattaya Daily News which brasenly leaves them plainly visible and recognisable.

The reason for airbrushing out his bits is because the ladies of the north are very shy , especially when back home on holiday from Pattaya and all the other places they work . Those that live here are possibly delighted in a seeing a bit of excitement .biggrin.png

  16. MAE HONG SON, March 18 - Illegal 'slash and burn' agriculture in Thailand's North has worsened the air quality in this northern province where dust particles have reached the record level of 200 microgrammes per cubic metre, a health official said today.

Mae Hong Son health officer Paisal Tanyavinitkul said the smog and dust from forest fires has covered this northern province for over a week and the health office has provided 30,000 masks for distribution to people.

People have been told to wear masks when they leave homes and refrain from outdoor exercise, said the doctor.

An air quality survey by the Office of Natural Resources and Environment found 31 hot spots throughout Mae Hong Son, including the tourist town of Pai where an average 24-hour dust level was measured at 205 microgrammes.

Children and elderly people at risk at this dust level, according to the office. The standard level is 120 microgrammes.

OK. Its official , the Smog is here but so far its only just starting to drift in but enough to make your eyes sore when walking about and driving a motorbike in Chiang Rai City . You can see the colour of the sun has changed due to having the haze filter attached to it ,biggrin.png . As for breathing that smog in , I am not sure how badly it affects us all in the long run , death I expect sooner than what we planned.

A couple of years ago it was snowing black soot , it was so bad you couldnt see 50mtrs ahead of you. I hope we never ever experience that again . Maybe a gas mask and regular filter changes are needed instead of those paper masks people are wearing but I suppose they are better than just breathing it neat into your lungs.

If you are planning on Visiting the North or moving here , just remember the burning season , its every year without fail , it just depends on which way the wind blows , or if we get a some rain to turn it in to acid rain to see how unlucky we are.

Lets hope we get wind and rain SOON , before it gets too bad.

The government safe level of 120 Mgrms has been passed already to reach 205Mgrms , I wonder what the microgram level of pollution was when we had black snow , it must have been off the scale , frightning .
