For the New Year, privy council chief urges top officials to be sure spending is for the good of the people

BANGKOK: -- PRIVY COUNCIL President Prem Tinsulanonda yesterday urged the Cabinet and military and police brass to ensure the state budget is spent for the true good of the country and the people.

"I understand that you are tired, but it's worth it if Thais are happy," the statesman said.

"I'm overjoyed to see the prime minister and you others sacrifice your own happiness to make the people in our country happy."

He also gave his blessings to the group led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, which had called on him at his Si Sao Tewes residence to offer him the traditional New Year's greetings.

General Prem also gave General Prayut words of encouragement.

"The prime minister is a strong person. He never gives up, so he sets a good example," he said.

"I don't think you seek to gain power for yourself. You really work for the country and the people. I may not be of much help to you because I'm getting on in years now.

"But I can help with some thoughts and encouragement, as well as a smidgeon of knowledge," Prem said.

"People place their hopes in the prime minister, the armed forces and the police. They put their trust in you. So you must not disappoint them. Regardless of the hardship, you have to bear it," he said to his well-wishers.

Prem also told the group that he believed their virtuousness would serve to protect them from any evil.

"If you do good every day, you will have strong armour," he said.

Prem served as the Army chief from 1978-81 and as prime minister from 1980-88. He still holds much influence among top military commanders and politicians.

Prem also stressed the importance of unity among the people in the country, citing what His Majesty the King had brought up seven years ago.

"We have to understand that His Majesty meant love and unity must be taken into account in running the country," he said.

Later, Prem said he was warned to be careful because "many people dislike me".

However, he hoped virtue would be his good protection.

"Goodness should serve as the best armour. I hope that those who hate me will dwindle," he said.

Prem was speaking to another group paying their respects - senior cavalry officers. He was also one of them while in the Army.

"I'm like a dying horse that is very weak now. It's time I retire," said Prem, who is 95.

Wow. A photo of the old school completely bringing down a developing country. This is historic.

  2. Got a message that I got the name wrong on my earlier post so will post my question again. Why hasn't this video, which shows someone that looks like NOMSOD next to Hannah at 16 seconds gotten more attention?

Quite likely it was him so . . .

-This video shows he was on the island.

-The police originally said they were looking for him after he beat feet.

    -He was involved big time.

  3. number 9 is at .30

    1. Swing your arms 'lavishly' 2. Hold up your left hand like a rabbit 3. Let the right hand fly behind your back....

Interesting to see that the ground is not wet at all at 1.30am, yet it was supposed to be raining at 1am during the B2 dip. What gives?

Anyone know who that is to the left Hannah with head band at 16 seconds? It sure looks like Mon who was supposedly not even on the island.

  4. As smedly would say, provide the original samples and test them independently against the b2. What's so difficult if it's genuine evidence? That would shut everyone up, but that won't happen because it won't match.

It's entirely possible that there was never any DNA found in Hannah. Brit forensics didn't find any. Thai forensics said they did and very quickly (and gleefully) claimed with certainty that it matched the scapegoats. Yet what has Thai forensics done right in their entire activity in this case? They lost Hannah's clothes. They lost the hair. They didn't find any DNA on the hoe, but Pontip's team did. They claim Nomsod's DNA is nowhere to be found at the crime scene, yet one of the head investigators couldn't say for sure whether Nomsod's DNA was ever typed, and if so, he was sure RTP didn't have any remaining DNA from him. Regardless, RTP wouldn't share DNA data with Brit experts. Thai forensics didn't notice any of the stab wounds on David. What has Thai forensics done right in this case? That's a real question.

Excellent summary boom. The mishandling and smoke screen of the DNA alone should have gotten the trial thrown out of court, but that is not what happened. The whole thing stinks worse now than it ever did, and those two innocent men are still behind bars.

  5. Thailand had a chance to do the right thing on this case but it is very obvious that the government will continue to lie to protect those that are connected and have money. You would think there would be compassion for the innocent people being framed up for a murder, but money prevails in Thailand. Even Thai people are calling the country Lie Land more and more, and the Koh Tao case is a perfect example. My illusion of Thailand being a good place to settle ten years ago has been completely shattered.

  6. Check the search function re Zenmate! It's ok for 2-3 weeks & then deliberately starts playing up in the hope that you'll sign up. If you don't sign up it gets worse!

I eventually settled for expressvpn. Their aftercare service in the months since signing up has been quick and impressive.

    HTH

Never used the search function on ZenMate as I just used it for a secure connection. Hitting that little slide switch on the shield icon was pretty cool every time I wanted to view a blocked site.

  7. This case is far from over. It will wind its way up to the Thai Supreme Court. If the Appeals Court overturns the Prosecution will appeal and vice versa. Final verdict in about 8 years. My heart goes out the families and I understand their need for closure. Unfortunately, there are so many doubts still out there and a lack of any published credible evidence will keep the doubts active. There are several other cases in Thai history that cause many of us to believe the doubts. Google Sherry Duncan- this case has many similarities to the B2 case.

Likely true as it has garnered so much world attention. So sad though that the two Burmese men miss out on the prime time of their life while the real perps party on in Koh Tao.

  8. Thailand is a human rights train wreck. The rule of law was bought for some sum down in Koh Tao, and no effort is made to acknowledge the many issues the country is facing. At some point, trying to run a country with medieval methodologies is going to fail. The human rights groups are continuing the pressure, but it is an uphill battle all the way.

  9. Absolutely disgusting that an entire county can be complicit in covering up the stitch-up of those two men. Just saw a news report where just recently, a Thai translator for SKY News was warned off by the local mafia. A mafia the government says does not exist.

  10. Will this VPN also stop the network throttling at peak times..

I did notice that having ZenMate turned on allowed faster surfing at times. Never thought about local throttling but that might be why.

  11. We have had the Standard Tour buses flash their brights at us on two occasions as they crossed over the double yellow to pass two lanes of traffic just north of Mae Rim a mile or so past that busy market. All this to get customers up to the elephant camps on the Mae Taeng River as I have seen them parked up there. Always expected a head on collision in that area but it hasn't happened YET, but it will happen. Likely all the bus companies have the same level of driver expectations.

  12. Why do these companies sue? The defamation, if any, would have long being forgotten, instead they are bringing more attention to themselves, and how much money could they get from a fifteen year old girl? A casa of stupidity on the company's part.

It is always about money in Thailand. Nothing else seems to matter.

  13. I got H Pylori from eating mango with coconut milk and sticky rice at one of those markets in 2006 and was quite ill until it was diagnosed. Doc pointed out that few markets have a sink where vendors can wash their hands, so most foods are contaminated if touched by the vendor. Lots of hand contact with pealing a mango so the tasty sticky rice mango is definitely a food to completely avoid in Thailand markets. Rats in markets are very common as well as the OP states.
