  1. Toknarok you only get what you pay for......if its 20 baht per year then don't rely on getting your house rebuilt, will you...lol

    HL

Actually Larry that's not quite true. About 6 years ago a mini tornado tore through the village damaging several houses including mine (minor - just a few roof tiles). The house of a Thai friend of mine had extensive damage, lost the entire roof and a couple of his house walls were flattened. He got an estimate for repairs from a builder, took it to the local Tessaban who approved it and paid the bill. Damage to furniture and effects was not covered.

20 baht is not a lot but how many houses are in rural Thailand. Millions at 20 baht a year, soon adds up.

Fair comment....I stand corrected, I guess it also depends on the type of house as well but I bet you wouldn't get much joy here in Korat City.

    Still, who knows.

  2. For anybody that is interested in any form of insurance and wants to deal with an English national then have a look at this web site

As I said before its based in Samui but in this day and age everything is possible by email anyway.

  3. Hi Factor....I am not familiar with your company but I must stress that I am not criticizing this or any other company, but, when I was searching for an insurance that gave me the cover I required none, repeat, none of the companies associated directly with Thailand did this. It doesn't matter to me who the company is associated with or backed by, it's the cover that they offer that counts.

Having said that maybe your company is as good or better but I would suggest that the OP looks into the cover and not take any company at face value.

As it happens NZI have recently merged with Safety Insurance Of Thailand, but they have kept all the attributes of their policies as before.

I am happy with mine and you are happy with yours and that's what counts.

  4. Personally I have found that all the Thai insurance companies do not offer the sort of cover that we are used to in the west.

When I lived in Samui I used a broker there and started a house insurance with a New Zealand Company "NZI" , the cover which is the same as an English company, and when I moved to Korat I carried on using them.

I have only claimed once for a broken shower door but they paid up with no problems whatsoever.

As it happens I am about to renew today and my premium is just over 15,000 baht for a very comprehensive cover including life insurance for my wife as well.

If you are interested let me know and I'll pm you the contact details of the broker.

  6. Fair points Tim Tang. I should have toned it down. Apologies.

This story touched me deeply so I am probably lacking perspective (I have a daughter we informally adopted from within our previously dirt-poor Thai family)

Not a problem! I appreciate you kind manner and I don't take anything personally on this site anyway. If this story is true I will be the first to renounce my skepticism, but I still remain suspicious because I've had 5 daughters and I can tell you that a THREE YEAR OLD would not survive the scenario that has been presented. You having a daughter yourself must realize that this story is a bit too much to believe. 5 years old...maybe! 3...not a chance.

You are not alone TimTang, I agree with everything you said except when you said "five years old". I would say much more than that even.

  7. May I give you another thought to consider....

My phone contract is with AIS and includes 3G internet. Well for an extra monthly rental of 299 baht I could receive all of the premier league games live on my phone.

If I hadn't already paid for the three years contract then I may have considered finding a way of connecting my iphone to my tv and not bothering with CTH as I only ever use it to watch the footy anyway.

Think about it....300 baht a month and you can watch it anywhere.

  8. In your original post did you search the internet in English or Thai.
When I am trying to find something I get my wife to search in Thai language as there are so many more small shops that only use Thai and therefore don't show up when searching in English lettering.

  9. Never been to Ubon so not commenting on the shops that have been mentioned but just thought you may want to consider looking in Bangkok if you are spending any time there.

All the big stores there will deliver anywhere in Thailand. I liked and bought all the furniture i neeeded for a four bedroom house from SB Furniture in the MBK Center and had it all delivered to Koh Samui the following week.

It was a great service and worth considering if you cant find what you want locally.

Strictly speaking Korat airport is not a functioning airport. It is however a fully functioning RTAF base and a main base for F-16s. The RTAF have always been extremely reluctant to allow civilian flights there and only did under duress, I flew there with Thai over 25 years ago. The demand for civilian flights was always low due to the frequency of the air-con buses. What are they these days about every 20 minutes.

While you are correct that the Korat civilian airport is closed down, even when it was open, it never shared facilities with the Air Force or Army, see below:

At the bottom of the first site you will find the chart showing the location in relation to the military fields.

The Korat airport was built miles away from the city centre which is another reason nobody can make flights to korat work. If you have to drive distance to get there in a taxi or a minibus you might as well go to BKK by road and save some cash. Before this white elephant airport was built the Thai Airways flight used to use the nearby Korat Air Force Base 10 or 15 minutes from town.

Is that not the same as I said in post 23, I guess you dont read the posts from previous pages then....lol

You forgot to mention that you have to drive an hour the wrong way out of town just to get to the airport and so by the time you have checked in for the flight and loaded up you are almost to Bangkok on the bus.
Also the bus fare is only 229 baht or so which is a darn sight less than the flight and taxi out to the airport.
So anybody with a head on their shoulders is always going to choose the bus unless they live next to the airport.

  12. As far as I know most "village" houses are family houses and are simply passed down from one generation to the next. in fact generally the child who elected to stay home and look after the parents in old age are the ones who inherit the house. Correct me if I am wrong but thats why not many are ever up for sale.
