1. Hi,

Am a newbie and i wonder if any of you that live in the Amphur muang notice anything about renovations of the province sports stadium and the new bus station at Sansai?

According to Chiang Rai websites (news section) renovations of the province sports stadium with budjet of 60 millions baht to build a new soccer field ,running lanes, shooting sport ground (not sure its indoor or outdoor) and a new building for indoor sports. To finish at end of october 2007 (next month) and will continue with constructions up to year 2008 with a budjet about 100 millions baht. All together from year 2007-2008 the approximately budjet of 200 millions baht. In the future the city will also build a new swimming pool of 50 meters. For the new bus station will be build at Sansai. They already started the work at 22th of june 2007 so maybe some of you must have seen it?Constructions would be finish around april year 2009. Amphur muang cant be expanding anymore i think its a good thing. The traffic inside the town would be less then now with less air pollution and noises. The new bus station is 6 kms away from town.

  2. Well I have to admit to being the one that has caused this. I absolutely love sticky rice and if it comes with mango well ....its even better than an orgasim. :o

Since we moved to thailand we have increased the amount of rice we eat seven fold.

But sticky rice is in a league of its own.

If you don't know what I'm talking about get some with mango. They sell it everywhere. In Pattaya I go to the Klang loads of stalls there..mmmmmmmm must go for a fix soon.

I might have to start a Sticky Rice Anonymous support group.

    begsaresponse (sticky rice friendly member)

I also love sticky rice with sweet mango. we were out in the fields one day and were hungry without food. we picked some sweet mango and very ripe papaya. It was deliciouse. Sorry for going off topic a little.

Wow i never thought that farang ppl would eat just plain sticky rice with fruits. You are like my granny hehe...she like to eat that way too but i dont like the combination at all. Kao niaw mamuang i hate it so much...

  3. Every time I go to Tukcom in Pattaya I see at least half a dozen Buddhist monks and they appear to be buying the latest mobile phone or another goodie for a PC. So much for a vow of poverty.

You must learn to see the difference between a monk and a novice. The novice stay in the temple for short time, a week up to a year, and they can go out shopping as any other citizen. Of course even the monks also have mobiles and PC´s.

But very seldom the monks are driving Toyota Fortuner, lives in a big house with gardener and at least one maid, and even more seldom they have a couple of children that go to private school. And so far I have not seen any monks taking their families for holidays going to Singapore, Hong Kong, Mauritius or such places.

But there are many missionaries living that kind of life!

And the people back in US, UK, Taiwan etc that have sent their money to this mission, they have not a clue what is happening with their money!

    :o:D:D

Monks are not allow to drive a car or live in their own house and for sure no wife and kids. But for Mahayana and Vajrayana buddhism they can i guess. Not sure about living in their own house but they can have wife and kids.

  4. Which temple did you have in mind? Temples that run meditation courses (such as Wat Suan Mokh in Chaiya, Surat Thani) allow people stay when the course is not on. Check out Sabaijai's list in the Buddhism forum about Wats offering meditation

    Hi sbk

sorry for not being detail. what i meant can thai woman go to the temple and stay for few days to do prayers?

why im asking this question is that my gf just went to temple to pray for 3 days. she told me that she is staying there.

is it true? the temple is at maesai area.

Yes she can stay at the temple. But this temple is more like a monastery running by "Maechee" or nons. Woman who want to seek some peace of mind, sort things out about their life or just for practice Buddhist learning. You dont need to shave your head but if you just wearing a white garment is good enough cause its not mandatory to shave your head. Some might shaving their hairs and eyebrowns but that must be like for a long term stay. I belive that in Theravada buddhism woman cant be a novice like monks but in Vajrayana buddhism woman have right as equal as man do for being monks.

Maechee (อุบาสิกา) is 1 part of 4 buddhist group of practitioners.

ภิกษุ (Piksu) Is a word to call a monk
ภิกษุณี (Piksunee) Same like above but for female monks
อุบาสก (Ubasok) regular buddhist (male) means literary the one who sit beside the lord Buddha, the one who have a strong faith
อุบาสิกา (Ubasika) regular buddhist (female) the same as above

I hope you get some idea of it and sorry for my english. It's not my mother tongue.

  5. Pailin. Now that name reminds me of that place which is like, east of Chantaburi province, in the Cambodia's side.

Some Cambodian people who lived in Pailin told me that they think it comes from the time when Thailand was in control of the Battambang province, they named this place Pratambang, so therefore they name this city Pailin, which means "Go Play" - "ไปเล่น", and according to them Pailin means in their Khmer language "Blue Sapphire"

Bear in mind that this is their view of what they think Pailin means in Thai as they are often bi-lingual that is, they speak to the Thais at the other border of Chantaburi and Sra Kaew (Formerly Pra chin buri)

Pailin were found here in Thailand alot and i think Chantaburi could be one of the provinces cause its near Cambodia border. Maybe the city was named Pailin cause of the founds? I dont know about the Go play thing. But Pailin is a very royal old girl name (hiso kinda). Like Ploy Pailin, Ploy Chompoo (too kitschy) or Tubtim (kinda plain).

  6. Emerald, Sapphire = Morakot

Diamond = Payt (falling tone) ... How does this differ in tone from the words for 'doctor' and 'sex'?

Precious Stone, Jewel = Payt Ploy

    Ruby = Tub-tim

    ? = Pailin

See the rather complete listing of Precious Stones, Jewels, and Gems at http://www.thai-language.com/id/589835

Thanks, but I really wanted to know the meaning of 'PAILIN' or 'PLOY PAILIN' if anyone knows. Also used as a female name.

Palin is a blue color sapphire but sapphire ave many color like transparant (white-glas color), yellow, pink, violet and green. There is also a rare color like orange-pink sapphire. Sapphire are semi-precious stones.

(Blue Sapphire) Thai called Palin (ไพลิน)

(Yellow Sapphire) Thai called Budsarakum (บุษราคัม) or Ploynambood (พลอยน้ำบุษร์)

Palin is a gem sign for Person who's born on friday. As for the month Palin is for september a gem sign too.

The meaning of Ploy Palin is : Semi-precious blue sappire. Or like precious sapphire. Thais belief that it brings good luck and jewelry that contains Palin were often passed on generations which can be use for example as a wedding ring or so.

For diamond in Thai is Phet and you can pronounce like "get" in English.

  7. You ppl need to save energies and money by using less of it. Thailand always make a propaganda about saving energy cause it effects the global warming too not just your wallet.

Thais spend less energies than foreigners for sure! Even my home dont have an airco and i do just fine. Well maybe because i live up north...hehe much cooler then down south. Pls trying to use less on what is not necessary can shut if off. How can ppl sleep with airco on...man its too cold for me.

  8. There is alot of lp of that age. But in the past most Thais dont have the lp player cause it was expensive. But the music was made indeed.

Check at this website http://pisutshop.com/ this shop has alot of oldies (Thai and foreigner) and you can mailthe owner about the shop location. Its in bangkok. This shop is open for over 5 years now. I also like alot of Thai oldies. I have about 4-5 lp which 1 of them is vary rare from artist name Jaran Manophet (northern thai folk music) and its from his first print. I'm very proud that i got the original tracks.

    Good luck! :o
