Wow you're in an environment of various languages. Personally to me it seems if you can speak Kham Muang or Isaan (Lao) good it will not be as hard to learn standard Thai. They all belong to the same family only different by region and of course many words are not always shared to all but in most common they do only with different accents.

But if you want to be able writing Thai script you should learn the standard Thai before trying other dialects.

Still you can see the differences if you know the language better (one or another). Some example is often in Kam Muang and Isaan (Lao) doesnt speak with R but with H. Standard Thai use R for the most part.

Rak in standard Thai mean love in lower tone while kam muang speak with higher tone, isaan (lao) speak somewhere between standard Thai and kam muang tone and Huk for broken in middle tone is use by all groups.

Rao standard Thai mean us, me/i while kam muang and isaan (lao) speak as Hao in middle tone.

Roo standard Thai mean knowing while kam muang and isaan (lao) speak as Hoo in higher tone and Hoo for ear(s) in lower tone is use by all groups.

Hope you dont get confused. Once you learn any of these language you can guess them out easier. Tai-Kadai speakers is intelligible to one another often more then 50%.

  2. Oh i didnt know (sorry) so she have this pink card which is for Stateless people of Myanmar of Tai ethnic. Okay, her limitation is within the Mae Sai district or Chiang Rai province. Since you said she can not travel out of Mae Sai only seems very strange to me, at least she can travel as long as she stay in CR would i think. Normally people with special coloured ID card can not travel out of the province.

I've read some comments on internet, alot of Shan people have acces out of the territory when aply for permission.

I dont think its going to be hard or take a long time like obtain Thai nationality.

    Any way best of luck!

Yeah my link was more of the normal Visa procedure which is totally different case then your situation :o

  3. That also counts for Phayao.

As of 8:00am the Reds are blocking traffic and have surrounded the City Hall it was described to me as "a lot of Reds".

might have to check it out yourself. Alot of lies in the media (of course also true story).

I had my mother in Law run down to the city hall and check it out for me.. :wai: She said she got bumped in the traffic and dropped her motorbike. She didn't elaborate on where the traffic was blocked.

The media doesn't tell the truth? I'm shocked. :D:D:D:D

Yes i mean Thai media... :o

  4. Although i'm not really know much on this but i've checked out at Maesai immigration website (only Thai lang).

She can aply Transit-TS visa which give her 30 days stay and travel through out the kingdom.

Or a tourist visa (Tourist-TR) for 60 days.

Not sure on what your purpose is but the safe way is to ask at immigration office they will provide you better information.

  5. That also counts for Phayao.

As of 8:00am the Reds are blocking traffic and have surrounded the City Hall it was described to me as "a lot of Reds".

Yes i've read about that Phayao city hall will be gather point of the red shirts. Not sure they will be blocking the highway to CR.

For CR they do blocking at Mae Korn intersection everyday till songkran ended (i hope not but seems to be). At which time of the day started or ended blocking i dont know of it. Some reds staying at Saen Phu Hotel and now seems they're calling out the locals to gather arounf CR city hall. I dont know when or it will happen. Just read it from the net. Overall this sort of things (politics in Thailand) are not always reliable on news paper, sometime you might have to check it out yourself. Alot of lies in the media (of course also true story).

  6. Arent it more of rumors? By now the red shirts are in BKK. Beside new year is important for northern Thais, they sure wouldnt want to spoiled here (except in BKK).

That also counts for Phayao. Take a good look of situation today for yourself and if nothing happen the next few days to follow will be as much the same.

Only heavy drinking and road accidents like usual :o

  7. The question was never about tones or sounds. Jianghaiperson, even though that is true with almost any language (outer inner city and so on) people here still refer "ไปเวียง" to "going to town" right?

A long "a" sound in เชง is more like "cheang/chaeng" I think without any double a's. That's probably where kunsamut gone wrong anyways because the "ea" and "ae" combinations do cause problems for some Thais. How many "Chaing Rai" haven't you seen instead of "Chiang Rai"? So what kun samut acually have written in English is strange because it should have been the opposite:

    Chiang = เชียง.

    Cheang (or Cheng) = เชง.

Sure my reply didnt really pointed out how it should be spoken, just pointing the meaning of Wiang for those who might not know the meaning. Yes when saying Pai Wiang = going to town, doesnt reply to all town, only to towns with city wall and not many town in Thailand still have the remaining old city wall in the north we have Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lampang or maybe Lamphun.

I cant say going to Wiang in Phan, because Phan is just a district, dont have city wall like Amphur Muang. Anyway what i mean to say is that Wiang dated back from Chiang Saen period, its really only for inner city wall area. Now ppl from Amphur Muang always use Pai Wiang because they have city wall in their town. Where other Amphur dont use it. Well except Wiang Chiang Roong district...but thats just the name :o

It should be Jiang instead of Chiang...in local tongue. :D

  8. Not sure on your budget and for how long your group will be staying but in CR we have one Hostel (Sabun Nga), i assume they are not expensive.

Their own website both in Thai and English. They seems to have alot of facilities might suit to your international students.

For renting a minibus with driver not include gas for 6-12 hours = 1200-1500 Baht

Minibus renting without driver and gas = 1200-1400 Baht

If you have no intention to visit places far from town i recommend you use the tuk tuk, song taew or linebus which are cheaper.

Also it is cheaper if you take a bus ride then renting a car, Mae Sai, Chiang Saen or Chiang Khong area are easier to reach with a bus.

Renting a minibus is handy if you go somewhere far of town like to Doi Tung or Doi Mae Salong.

Perhaps other CR forum members can share the transportation info to you since i'm not so familiar with CR town.

  9. Sombat Tour or Siam First are well known also i had been using them before.

When you get on the bus simply tell the ticket checking lady/guy when they get near 6 Yak Phan, they will warn you (if you sleep).

  10. Umm...makes me wonder are they poor prisoners? Should i pity them? Well for the sake of humanitarian purpose i still feel they need warm clothing just like anyone else.

Department of Corrections should have take care of this for the first place but no wonder they didnt since CR already have shortages of blankets this year. :o
