There are many reasons why someone might want to move or retire to Thailand.

Aside from the affordable cost of living and the great climate, Thailand also has excellent standards of health care, which can not be said for other retirement havens in Southeast Asia.

Thailand’s healthcare system is internationally recognized as one of the best in the region.

The government or public hospitals in major tourist hubs such as Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket will have English speaking staff and can offer good levels of care.

While the same level of care might not be available in rural Thailand, treatment is normally at an acceptable level.

As an expat living in Thailand it is important you consider the level of care you wish to receive should you become ill or have an accident.

Nothing can be predicted and falling ill or having an accident often occurs when we least expect it.

The level of care you receive is of course indexed against what you can afford.

For expats in Thailand who don’t have health insurance, you risk being left with significant medical bills even if you opted for treatment in a government hospital as opposed to private hospital.

Even fairly routine or minor treatments can cost a lot if you do not have coverage.

Prices can also vary significantly depending on the hospital.

A routine check up at a private hospital is likely to cost around 3,000 baht, and while it is likely to be less at a government hospital, you could face a lengthy wait to see a doctor and not have access to English speaking staff.

If you need to stay overnight in a private hospital, you would be given your own private room but should expect to pay in the region of 5,000 to 10,000 baht per day.

If you are admitted to ICU the cost of your stay in hospital could skyrocket to as much as 100,000 baht per day.

The cost of treatment for more common conditions or infections, while also varying greatly, can be significant.

Treatment for something such as dengue fever, which could require several days stay in hospital, can cost up to 80,000 baht if treated privately.

Treatment after having a motorcycle accident - an all too common occurrence in Thailand - could cost into the millions of baht depending on the severity of the injuries.

As stated, costs will vary depending on the hospital, length of stay and any potential complications but the above gives a rough idea of how much some common medical procedures can cost in Thailand.

Urologists team led by Dr. Suntchai Wirotsaengthong in M Centre, BNH hospital, Bangkok, Thailand become the first team in Asia performing both Rezum and iTind – the latest minimally invasive procedures for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

BPH is medical term of enlarged prostate. Normally, it happens with men in their 50s, when prostate, a walnut-shaped gland, starts to grow and presses on the urethra.

As the result, about half of men with BPH are suffering with bothersome symptoms like a weak urine flow, difficulty with starting urinate or emptying the bladder completely. It also gets men up at night and puts them in urgent situations almost the time. The sufferers may experience some embarrassing moments like urge to find the bathroom at restaurant, urge to find pit stops in long road trip, urge to make water when are having romantic time with their partners.

At certain level of severity, seeking medical attention is required. Oral medicine and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) are traditional methods. However, taking medicines in long-term and TURP cause unexpected side effects which erectile dysfunction and retrograde ejaculation are among them. That makes some men think twice before reaching out for a treatment.

Understanding the concerns of patients, Dr. Suntchai and his team have been striving to find new approaches to address patients symptoms without surgery.

Consequently, M Centre, BNH hospital, Bangkok, Thailand has been become a first Urological clinic where both iTind and Rezum – the latest minimally invasive procedures have been done.

iTind is the newest treatment for BPH. By using temporary nitinol device, it reshapes the prostatic urethra, gradually creating a wider opening through for urine to flow freely.

Rezum is using the natural energy stored in few drops of water to inject to the enlarged prostate tissue. The excessive tissues which are pressing on the urethra will be removed thanks to the heat from each 9-second-needle-treatment.

Both procedures can be done as outpatient treatments with light sedation and patients are able to go home in the same day. Most of them return to regular activities within a few days.

The efficacy of iTind and Rezum is demonstrated through significant symptomatic relief and durable improvement.

In detail, 3-year-study of iTind has shown that the symptoms score reduced 19% and the urinary flow rate improved 41%.

The corresponding numbers of Rezum are 48% and 44% reported by a 5-year-study.

More important, there is no adverse events related to sexual function caused by  these treatments were recorded.

All procedures are now U.S FDA approved in 2015 and 2020 respectively.

“We have to understand that there is no same treatment protocol for every cases. However, if you’re right candidate of either iTind or Rezum, it can bring a lot of benefits for you,” Dr, Suntchai said.

  9. Santa Clause - Beach.jpeg

As we’re counting down to Christmas and New Year’s, we’re constantly bombarded with messages of how ‘it’s the most wonderful time of the year’ and everyone is ‘rocking around the Christmas tree’. So it’s no wonder that expectations are sky high and many are left disappointed, silently suffering from the holiday blues and experiencing a nosedive in their mental health. If you’re one of them (for whatever reason), this article from our friends at Pacific Prime Thailand gives 6 tips for keeping your mental health in check this holiday season.

    1. It's a Christmas like no other…

Chances are you’re not very keen to spend yet another holiday in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. Remember that these are unprecedented times, and while you’re certainly not alone in feeling this way, there’s only so much you can do to alleviate your concerns. These may include getting antigen testing kits (ATK) for home use, getting vaccinated/boosted when you get the opportunity to, and asking whether your family and friends are vaccinated before making any plans to socialize.

    2. ..and one that may look entirely different.

Are you an expat living abroad in Thailand? Unable to travel back to your country due to pandemic-related travel restrictions? You can video call your loved ones and send them care packages to let them know you’re thinking of them. While it’s only natural to long for the familiarity and comforts of home, you can also take the opportunity to do something entirely different. Meet other expats, go out for a meal, or even head to the beaches and islands of the south to make the most of the country’s natural beauty without swarms of tourists.

    3.  Awkward conversations are the name of the game

If you’re spending the holidays with your friends and family, you might be dreading certain topics of discussion. Whether it’s that uncle who has questionable political views or the cousin who’ll be curious to know if you’re seeing anyone, it’s best to mentally prepare for any awkward conversations beforehand. Practice your responses, with some ideas including “I hear you” or “Let’s talk about this a little later”. You can also make a stance to shut down any unwanted commentary.

    4. …and social batteries are a thing.

Speaking of talking about things later, social batteries are totally a thing. As such, you shouldn’t feel bad about being drained of energy after periods of socializing. In fact, why not plan your exit strategy ahead of time? This is especially important if you’re with your partner or someone else you’ll need to go home with. This could be a secret signal to tell them that you’re ready to hit the sack and a reasonable excuse for your early departure.

    5. Think out-of-the-box when it comes to gifts…

There also might be unnecessary pressure in the gift-giving department. You might spend ages agonizing about the most thoughtful and sentimental gifts for your loved ones and worry about getting something that isn’t appreciated. The solution is to simply ask them what they’d like. Having this conversation also shows them that you value their needs and wants. If this tactic doesn’t work, you can always give practical gifts instead. Think gift vouchers, subscription services, or even just good old cash.

    6. …and that includes a health insurance plan for you and your loved ones.

When buying gifts for others this holiday season, don’t forget to consider the gift of good health for you and your loved ones. In other words, you can secure health insurance for Thailand expats to ensure access to the best private hospitals without having to pay out of pocket. You can use the plan to deal with any physical illnesses and/or accidents, as well as to get mental health support to keep the holiday blues at bay.

  13. 2022 is now upon us, and we don’t really know what it's going to look like in terms of the economy, COVID, and what day to day life will be like for the foreseeable future. There are some things that are directly in our control, however. One of those things is finally getting your Thai language skills to a level that you are proud of.

    Screenshot 2021-12-20 at 15.10.43.png

So many of my friends have been in Thailand for years, and they still barely speak more than taxi Thai or some restaurant Thai. When comparing them with my friends who can speak the language, you can tell that their Thailand experiences are quite different from each other.

For lack of a better term, Thai culture is quite foreign from cultures back in the west. There are so many things that we find strange or weird. Learning the Thai language is not a magic key that unlocks a full understanding of Thai culture. Rather, it is a key that helps to decode so many of our experiences that we find confusing or flat out backwards.

    Screenshot 2021-12-20 at 15.10.35.png

On the flip side, it shows that you care to learn about the country that you currently call home. We usually expect people to learn English when they move to the USA or UK, and we should also hold ourselves to the same expectations when the tables are turned.

We can't control many external things in 2022, but we can improve ourselves to make the best of any situation that life delivers to our door. Zoe Thai has a fantastic online program to help non-Thais learn the Thai language in an easy to digest, simple format. Our teachers are super friendly, and they are all fluent in English. We have animated videos that will help guide you through situations that you may come across in Thailand, and you will also get a Zoe Thai quiz after every one on one class. We are so much more than just a freelance teacher.

Come give us a try. The first assessment class is free with any of our qualified teachers, and you’ll also get to access an animated video from our library as well as a Zoe Thai quiz!

Before taking out health insurance it is important you understand exactly what is and isn’t covered in your policy.

Much of this of course depends on the type of cover you take out. You should always choose a policy that offers the best possible coverage to suit your needs.

However, there are some things that are not typically covered on most policies, regardless of what policy or provider you choose.

While there can be exceptions in certain circumstances, below are some of things you can expect will not be covered under your health insurance plan.

    Pre existing conditions

Health insurance normally does not cover pre-existing conditions.

Pre-existing conditions or other conditions related to them will normally be excluded from a policy.

This is because health insurance is designed to provide cover for new conditions that may occur only after the policy has started.

    Chronic conditions

A condition that is classed as ongoing, requires long term treatment or has no cure will not typically be covered by health insurance.

This could be a condition such as kidney dialysis or reoccurring heart or lung problems.

Coverage is not provided for chronic conditions as health insurance is designed to cover you for treatment to get you back to your original health.

If you have a chronic condition which will affect you long term, typically coverage is not possible.

    Dental work

Normally, dental work will not be covered under a regular policy. However, insurance companies will often offer a separate policy or add on that can cover dental work.

This may enable you to claim back a certain amount each year for things like check ups, fillings or appointments.

    Cosmetic surgery

Because cosmetic surgeries or ‘elective treatments’ are considered to be lifestyle treatments, they are not covered by health insurance policies.

Cosmetic treatments are things such as botox, breast implants, liposuction, face lifts or anything aesthetic.

However, reconstructive surgeries following an accident, for example, could be covered under a health insurance policy.

    Other exclusions

There are other conditions that most insurance companies are unlikely to cover. Some of these include:

    • AIDS/HIV
    • Allergies or allergic disorders
    • Birth control, conception, sexual problems and gender re-assignment
    • Deafness
    • Dental/oral treatment
    • Dialysis
    • Treatment to correct eyesight (e.g. long or short)
    • Intensive care (other than in some specific circumstances)
    • Learning difficulties and developmental problems
    • Pregnancy and childbirth
    • Professional sports injuries
    • Puberty, menopause and ageing
    • Sleep problems and disorders
    • Speech disorders

As with all of the above, always check the terms and conditions of your policy so you know exactly what is and is not covered.

When you buy health insurance, the hope is that you never actually need to make a claim.

Having health insurance brings some peace of mind, leaving you safe in the knowledge that you are protected should you have an accident or become ill.

But every once in a while a high profile case may hit the news about an expat in Thailand who has huge medical bills after their claim was denied.

This understandably leaves people with concerns about how much they can actually rely on their health insurance policy during those times when they need it the most.

As long as you fully understand the details of your policy and how it works for you, there is no reason why you should worry about the unexpected when trying to make a claim with your insurer.

Below are some of the reasons why your claim could be denied.

    1. Your claim is related to a pre-existing condition

A pre-existing condition is a term that can cause confusion when it comes to health insurance. Simply put, “pre-existing condition” is a medical condition that you were already suffering from when you applied for your health insurance policy or that you have received treatment for in the past.

Some health insurance policies will not offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, but there are other specialized plans that will offer coverage under certain circumstances.

If you are in need of this type of coverage, it is best to discuss what is available from your insurance provider. Don’t leave anything to chance to take an unnecessary risk.

Your health insurance policy will only support you if you choose the plan that most suits your specific needs.

    2. Because information was missing from your application

If you have a pre-existing condition and neglected to tell your insurer about it. Even if you consider your condition to be minor or unrelated to your claim, a lack of disclosure could mean that your claim is invalidated.

Therefore, it is absolutely essential that you be honest, accurate and thorough when providing information on your health insurance application.

If you are unsure, ask your doctor for a copy of your medical records.

    3. Your medical status changed

When you apply for health insurance, your application is based on the status of your health as described in your application.

Should there be any change in your health you are obligated to inform your insurer.

If you fail to do so, your claim could be rejected on the basis that your application was not accurate.

What people do not realize is that a minor change could result in a major issue.

For example, it could be something as simple as your doctor changing from one brand of prescription medicine to another. Alternatively, it could be that the dosage of your medication was changed, as your condition improves, however, this can still impact your insurance policy.

The bottom line is, always share new information with your insurer to make sure you have all bases covered.

    4. You tried to claim for something not covered under your policy

There is no standard set coverage with regards to health insurance and every policy is different. That is why it is so important to do your research and speak to your health insurance provider so you understand exactly what is and is not covered in your policy.

Your policy will have a list of exclusions - things that are not covered.

For example, your policy may not cover you for injuries resulting from extreme sports or riding a motorcycle. Are you covered for dental work or treatment for a mental health condition?

    Therefore, read the fine print.

  20. Top 5 Places to Visit in Thailand this Holiday Season.jpeg

Are you a foreign expat, traveler, or retiree looking for places to visit in Thailand this holiday season? If yes, then we may have what you are looking for! The excitement of Christmas combined with the cooler climate and New Year celebrations makes this time of the year truly magical.

So if you are in search of some memorable places to visit, this article from our friends at Pacific Prime Thailand presents the top 5 places to visit in Thailand this holiday season. Read on to discover more about them!

    1. Mae Hong Son

This province, located in the north of Thailand, is a must-visit for anyone this holiday season. Nestled next to the Myanmar border, Mae Hong Son is surrounded by high, majestic mountains that overflow with mists in the early morning and resemble a sea of clouds. You’ll surely appreciate the fresh mountain air and dew, which is a good break from major cities like Bangkok. Plus, the cold chilly conditions can bring back memories of home for those who are from abroad.

Make a trip to the viewpoints

To glimpse the morning mist, head to one of the many viewpoints dotted across the region like in Pai district. For starters, Yun Lai's viewpoint is considered a great sunrise viewpoint in Pai with sweeping valley views. You may want to stay somewhere close so you can get up before dawn and head over to see the mist as the sun rises. Several hotels and resorts are located in the center of Pai for expats and travelers with families. However, camping grounds are also available for adventurous and nature-loving travelers. Just make sure you pack a warm winter jacket and prepare hot beverages for the morning sip.

Tip: For those who suffer from motion sickness, be aware of the long, winding roads. Some routes can be pretty daunting, and travelers may want to consider hiring a local driver who has experience in getting around the province. Also, get peace of mind with travel or health insurance coverage. Consider adding emergency medical evacuation in case the unthinkable happens!

Other places to visit near Mae Hong Son this holiday season

    • Mae Sariang for a trek to the local hill tribes
    • Padong Longneck Village to sample life in the hills
    • Muang Pang Hot Springs for a nice, warm soak

    2. Phuket

Phuket, an island and province, is a brilliant stopover for those looking to visit some of the world’s most famous tropical islands like Koh Similan and Koh Phi Phi. Expats and tourists will feel at home, too, as the province is known for its international vibe. And with the monsoon season already over, trips across the Andaman sea will be less choppy and calmer.

    Visit Phuket Old Town

Did you know that Phuket Town, the capital of the province of Phuket, is considered an attraction itself? Talad Tai Rot or Chao Fah Market is where you will find the famous Phuket weekend market. But if you fancy a classic walking street experience, then Phuket Town has that too! Held every Sunday in the heart of Phuket Old Town on Thalang Road, This roughly 350-meter-long colorful and bustling commercial street has so much to offer, including souvenir gifts, local delicacies, and cozy eating spots.

    Discover the views across Phuket

Similar to the mountain ranges of Mae Hong Son, you can also get a full viewing of the sunrise across many of Phuket's stunning viewpoints. Travel to Black Rock Viewpoint for a spectacular view of south Phuket; Karon Viewpoint for picturesque scenes of Kata Yai and Karon beaches; and Laem Singh Viewpoint for its signature sunset moment. Perfect for expat couples, retirees, and travelers alike!

Other places to visit near Phuket this holiday season

    • Ao Phang Nga National Park for its rich marine and floral life
    • Krabi for its mangrove forests and prominent climbing spots
    • Koh Yao and Yao Noi for their pristine beaches and diving sites

Tip: If you are new to Phuket island, it is worth knowing how to get around before you arrive. Luckily, the province has a well-established transport system consisting of boats, ferries, motorbikes and car rental companies, taxis, buses, Tuk Tuks, etc. If you are staying at a hotel or resort, you’re encouraged to seek the latest travel arrangements from staff. They can offer reliable travel advice for your visit.

    3. Pattaya

Are you looking for a place to celebrate the arrival of the new year? A popular place for expats, retirees, and travelers is Pattaya. The beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand is just 150 km southeast of Bangkok, making a trip from the capital appealing for many.

    Enjoy international cuisine in Pattaya

The beach resort is family-friendly and has an international vibe, similar to Phuket. Food-wise, Pattaya has a wide selection of restaurants serving some of Thailand's freshest seafood. Due to the high number of resident expat foreigners in Pattaya, you’ll find eateries serving authentic French, Italian, Swiss, German, Scandinavian, Indian, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese cuisine, etc. Knowing this, you won’t have a problem finding food to eat in Pattaya!

Test the waters or head to Koh Lan

Water sports are a big draw for thousands of visitors. Care to windsurf, water ski, swim, sunbathe, snorkel, and sail? Pattaya has it all! A one-day trip to Koh Lan is also worth considering. Once on the island, minibus drivers are available to drive you and your loved ones around to sample the idyllic scenes, cafes, and quiet spots across the island.

For solo travelers, you can rent a scooter to explore the hidden gems located around the island. If you decide to stay overnight, you might spot a few locals fishing for squid when conditions allow. Join in if fishing is your thing!

Note: The sun in Pattaya, like everywhere across the Land of Smiles, is very strong. If you are heading to the beach, make sure to apply sunscreen liberally to protect your skin and prevent sunburn. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially when out doing one of the many water sports.

Other places to visit near Pattaya this holiday season

    • The Sanctuary of Truth, which is a temple carved out of wood
    • Nong Nooch, a 500-acre tropical botanical garden
    • Ramayana Water Park, one of the biggest water theme parks in the country

    4. Ubon Ratchathani

Ubon Ratchathani, a province bordering Laos and Cambodia, has many historical places to visit, such as Pha Taem National Park, which is famous nationwide for its prehistoric rock paintings. So if you are looking for a cultural experience this holiday season, Ubon Ratchathani is a great choice! But if shopping is on your mind, the province is well-known for its locally made souvenirs and gifts.

Buy your Christmas gifts for friends and family

During your visit, why not pick up some popular souvenirs, including hand-woven cotton cloths, silk cloths, folk style pattern pillows, brasswares, etc. When the chance arises, ask the locals for more details about how they are made so you can tell a great story back home. Not only are you buying directly from the locals, but you will also be supporting the local economy. A win-win for all!

Tip: Locals in this part of Thailand will speak a Northeastern Thai dialect (Esarn), which may be hard to follow and fully understand. So before traveling to Ubon Ratchathani, make sure to ask a local guide or check online for ways to speak the local dialect. Don’t worry if you struggle. The locals will do their best to understand but appreciate your efforts even more!

Other places to visit near Ubon Ratchathani

    • Sam Pan Boak or the Grand Canyon of Thailand,
    • Wat Tham Khuha Sawan for its large white chapel and Mekong river viewpoint
    • Hat Wat Tai to enjoy a meal along the river and watch the sunset

    5. Bangkok

Last but not least on the list is Bangkok, the most popular city to visit in Thailand. Expats and visitors traveling to Thailand will most likely choose the capital as their first stop. Not only is it an international hub for travelers in the region, but the location is ideal for those looking to do some incredible bargain hunting and sightseeing across the city.

Explore Bangkok’s temples to gain peace and tranquillity

Bangkok has a rich history stretching back several centuries and is well known to the international community. Expats, retirees, and travelers should, at least, visit the cities immaculate historical temples such as:

    • Wat Phra Sri Rattanasamaram (Phra Kaew)
    • Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangalaram (Wat Pho)
    • Wat Arun Ratchawararam
    • Wat Phra Bor Banphot (Golden mountain)
    • Wat Benchamabophit

Shopping for holiday season gifts at the malls

Once you have had your fill of temples, there’s also the fantastic shopping experience in Bangkok. The capital is home to some of the largest shopping malls like CentralWorld, Emquartier, Siam Paragon, Icon Siam, and more. You’ll find global brands and luxury goods in these places too.

During the holiday season, many will be decorated for Christmas. CentalWorld and Siam Paragon, and Emquartier, to mention a few, are already showcasing Christmas trees, decorations, and sparkling lights. There are also numerous Christmas markets to check out in the capital too.

    Local shopping experience

If you are looking for a local experience, head to places like Chatuchak Weekend Market, Sampeng Market, Yaowarat, Phahurat Night Market, and Talad Rod Fai Train Night Market. You’ll come across many wonderful gifts from clothing and accessories to homeware and electronic goods.

Tip: When shopping in malls, consider asking for a tax refund if you are a foreign traveler (tourist) to Thailand. Stores participating in this scheme will display a 'VAT Refund For Tourists' sign. If unsure, speak to a staff member at the store for more information and instructions. Nothing beats saving while you shop.

Other places to visit near Bangkok this holiday season

    • Lopburi for its sunflower fields located in Phatthana Nikhom
    • Khao Yai National Park, where temperatures can hover around 10 degrees Celsius or less
    • Wang Nam Khiao for some of the purest air in Thailand, with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees Celsius at night
