    THE MICHELIN GUIDE

EXPANDS INTO THE NORTHEAST REGION, “ISAN”

Picture_The michelin guide expands into the northeast region isan_04.JPG

    ·         The MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2023 will feature Nakhon Ratchasima,
Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen as representative cities
    of the Isan Region.

    ·         This expansion marks the sixth year of the Guide’s presence in Thailand

The MICHELIN Guide and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) have co-hosted a press conference to announce the MICHELIN Guide Thailand’s expansion of its coverage to Thailand’s Northeastern region – widely known as “Isan” – in its sixth edition, to be released at the end of 2022. With 20 provinces in this largest region of Thailand, four provincial cities – namely Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen – are selected to represent the region’s distinctive and flavorful cuisine, as well as its remarkable natural and cultural heritage.

Northeastern Thai or “Isan” cuisine has an interesting background with cultural influences from ancient eras – including the Sukhothai Kingdom and Khmer empire – as well as from neighboring countries i.e. Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China. The region has fields and forests on plateaus and mountains suitable for livestock farming. In addition, it is a significant area for quality rice cultivation – including the world-famous Jasmine rice and glutinous rice. Although Isan food does not contain any seafood ingredients due to its landlocked geographical location, the region has many rivers – notably, the Mekong River, where freshwater fish are in abundance.

According to Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides, Michelin inspectors have been impressed with the flavorful and distinctive Isan cuisine, as it employs simple cooking methods yet delivers subtle and complex flavour profiles – such as boiling, grilling, steaming, slow-cooking, and – above all – the food preservation technique, which is considered a highlight of the cuisine, as it showcases local wisdom in keeping fish and

seasonal vegetables for longer shelf life as food ingredients. Fermented fish [Pla Ra], made of local fish fermented in salt and rice, is the most famous and major preserved ingredient that has been used in many dishes and sauces, and has been registered as a heritage of national cultural wisdom since 2012.

“Apart from unique food and interesting culinary background, there are many Isan-born chefs with food knowledge and cooking experience from working in world-famous restaurants abroad, and have now opened their own restaurants in their homeland. They play a significant role in elevating Isan food to the next level – using local ingredients combined with their superior cooking skills, setting a new standard for more high-quality local food. This is a great sign that the Northeastern region of Thailand will soon be an interesting tourist destination for local gastronomy, contributing to a good economy among local communities and markets,” said Mr.Poullennec.

Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, has regarded the existence of The MICHELIN Guide Thailand during the past 5 years as a valuable contribution to TAT’s mission to promote Thailand as an international gastronomic destination. The increasing number of MICHELIN-starred, Bib Gourmand-awarded, and selected dining establishments featured in each edition of the MICHELIN Guide Thailand – partially as a result of the MICHELIN Guide’s further exploration of new territories across the country’s different regions, and partially as a result of local restaurants striving to improve quality and service to live up to prestigious MICHELIN Guide standards – help drive awareness and set new trends for gastro-tourism among local and international travelers on a broader spectrum.

Comparing the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2018 edition to the latest 2022 edition, the number of overall selected eateries is up from 126 to 361. Out of this, the number of Michelin-starred eateries has increased from 17 to 32, and Bib Gourmand-awarded from 35 to 133. The coverage has expanded from “Bangkok” in the 2018 edition, to now include “Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket & Phang-Nga” in the 2022 edition.

“Thailand’s Northeastern region has a vast potential – in terms of culinary culture and history, diverse tourist attractions, as well as charming local lifestyle. Apart from delicious and authentic Northeastern Thai or ‘Isan’ cuisine, people of all ages can enjoy visiting attractions like Khao Yai National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – that situated mainly in Nakhon Ratchasima, Pha Taem National Park in Ubon Ratchathani, Ban Chiang Archaeological Site in Udon Thani, Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum in Khon Kaen. Moreover, the Northeastern region has a lot of outstanding local food and handicraft products, with more than 34 registered Geographical Indication (GI) items, to look out for when shopping for souvenirs. With the launch of the upcoming 2023 MICHELIN Guide Thailand edition, we hope that not only will the entire world be aware of the vibrant culinary scene of the Northeastern region of Thailand, but also boost tourism and the local economy at the same time,”
    said Mr.Supasorn.

Thailand has three official seasons: hot, cool, and rainy. After months of stifling heat, the Kingdom will soon enter its rainy season. It begins around mid-May every year and continues until mid-October. While it’s a refreshing change of climate, the rainy season is also the flu season, bringing additional health risks to those traveling to and living in Thailand. Our friends at Pacific Prime Thailand will take a look at the most common rainy season illnesses and how to prevent them.

    1. Dengue

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection and is common during the rainy season. The transmission rates are typically higher during this period. Transmitted through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes, its symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headaches, and skin rashes with red spots.

Complications: There is a 36% chance of this illness developing into Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) with more serious symptoms, like uncontrolled bleeding and high fever. It’s imperative that you seek medical treatment as soon as you can, as DHF can cause a circulatory system failure.

Prevention: Avoid mosquito-infested areas, use insect repellents, and sleep inside a mosquito net. You may also want to consider getting a Dengue vaccine beforehand, on top of all the essential vaccinations in Thailand.

Japanese encephalitis is another dangerous mosquito-borne illness. Your risk of contracting it is not as high compared to other similar diseases. However, you’ll be more exposed to Japanese encephalitis if you live in or travel to rural areas for a long period of time. In Thailand, this is prevalent in northern areas like Chiang Mai.

    2. Pneumonia

Highly contagious, pneumonia is the infection of one or both lungs. Patients usually experience chills, fever, difficulty breathing, and shaking. It may also be a side effect of other health problems such as asthma.

Complications: While pneumonia can range from mild to severe, it can be fatal if left untreated.  Kids, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems are especially vulnerable to the illness.

Prevention: Maintain good personal hygiene to both protect yourself and prevent the spread of it to others if you suffer from any suspected symptoms of pneumonia.

    3. Flu

Rainy season coincides with the flu season in Thailand. Most opt for spending time together indoors to avoid the heavy monsoon rains outside. Unfortunately, this increases the chance of spreading and contracting the flu. The flu is a more severe version of the common cold, with symptoms such as body aches or headaches, high fever, and long-lasting fatigue.

Complications: Asthma, pneumonia, sinusitis, and bronchitis are a few examples.

Prevention: Stay healthy and boost your immunity by eating a balanced diet and regularly exercising. A habit of regular hand washing will also help. If you're particularly vulnerable to contracting the flu, then getting vaccinated is a good recommendation before the flu season arrives.

    4. Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that takes its toll on both humans and animals. It spreads to humans through contact with food, soil, or water contaminated with the infected animal's blood, urine, or tissue. In addition, leptospirosis carriers tend to be animals in close contact with humans, such as rats, cows, buffalo, dogs, etc. Muscle aches on the calf and thigh, fever, and headache are typical symptoms of the disease.

Complications: Meningitis, liver failure, or even death may befall those with the disease.

Prevention: Avoid stepping on puddles on the streets as they may be contaminated by animal excretion. Also, wear long pants and protect your legs with rain boots. Only touch your face with clean, sanitized hands.

    5. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease

This contagious viral infection spreads via physical contact with the infected person’s nasal secretions, saliva, and stool. You may develop a fever, muscle aches, and painful red blisters in your mouth, as well as on the palms and soles.

Complications: Encephalitis and paralysis may occur in severe cases.

Prevention: Make sure to only consume thoroughly cooked food. Avoid using other people’s items, especially if you suspect they’ve been infected with the hand-foot-and-mouth disease. Keep clean by sanitizing your hands and immediately washing any poop-stained clothes.

    6. Malaria

A disease caused by parasites, the risk of malaria is only present in rural areas like Chiang Mai and Pattaya but not in cities like Bangkok. It is carried by the Anopheles, a different strain of mosquitoes than the dengue carriers. While there are five species of human malaria parasites, the most dangerous is the Plasmodium falciparum. Some common symptoms of malaria include fever, malaise, chills, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Complications: It has the potential to cause organ failures. Furthermore, cerebral malaria is another condition to worry about, as parasite-filled blood cells block vessels to your brain, causing brain damage.

Prevention: Preventive measures for dengue and mosquitoes, in general, will prove effective against malaria. Additionally, you might also want to consider bringing antimalarial medication with you if you’re planning to visit rural areas.

With so many health risks out there, it’s important to secure the best health insurance plans in Thailand. You’ll gain peace of mind knowing that you won’t have to pay out of pocket for any surprise medical bills.

  5. Black Mountain winners.jpg

The Orchid Palm Homes Cup V took place at True Arena on Sunday morning. For the first time the tournament featured Under 10 teams with some really close and entertaining games.

The first semi final of the day saw Black Mountain matched with PP United. The former took an early lead but came under sustained pressure before grabbing a late second goal to run out as 2-0 winners.

The second semi final provided non stop drama and action. Hua Hin City deservedly took the lead only for Nong Hoi to score twice completely against the run of play.

Hua Hin City laid siege to the Nong Hoi goal with an on stop barrage of shots colliding with either the keeper or the post. They eventually did score a deserved equalizer and the tie went to penalties with the team from Kao Tao converting two out of their three spot kicks to win the shoot out 2-1.

The third and fourth placed playoff provided more entertainment. This time Hua Hin City did manage to get the win claiming a 3-2 victory over PP United.

Nong Hoi and Black Mountan met in the final and the gulf between the two teams was clear from the start. Phakin Chalermakas opened the scoring with a long range free kick and grabbed a second with a close range finish moments later.

The same player appeared to be fouled in the penalty area but the referee waved play on and the ball broke to Max Wills who finished smartly from close range. Substitute Chaturapahat Litmak added a fourth after some good work from Archie Wills.

There was just time for Chalermkas to complete his hat trick with a clever flick, scoring his fifth goal of the tournament. After all the drama in the earlier games it was a one sided final with Black Mountain running out as 5-0 winners.

The Orchid Palm Homes Cup was founded in 2020. It has become a fixture on the youth football calendar in Hua Hin and former England international Gary Stevens, who watched the entire tournament was very impressed,

“There were some great games and some great football played by the teams. It is such a good playing surface at True Arena and this is the perfect opportunity for these young players to get a taste of competitive football in a fun and friendly environment.”

Orchid Palm Homes owner Stephen Ayling says he is proud to be supporting grass roots youth football in Hua Hin,

“It is good to see things getting back to normal after Covid-19 with children back playing sport again and some of the matches today were really tense and exciting. We are happy to be able to give children the opportunity to get away from their iphones and ipads and get outside and enjoy playing competitive sport.”

Songkran, or the Thai New Year Festival, is celebrated by Thais across the globe between April 13th-15th. Traditionally, Thai people will travel to temples or head home to pour small bowls of scented water over Buddha statues (Song Nam Phra), as well as senior friends and family members (Rot Nam Dam Hua). This traditional act symbolizes the washing away of sins and misfortune in the past year and starting the new year afresh.

Even expats and visitors in Thailand can enjoy the celebrations as cultural events bring people together, and incredible travel destinations come alive with smiles, laughter, and happiness. It’s a special time for everyone to embrace the Thai concept of sanuk (having fun), which is at the forefront of the Songkran celebrations.

But with COVID-19 still around, things are a lot different. Are you looking for tips on staying safe and destinations to visit in Thailand during the festival? Our friends at Pacific Prime Thailand have put together a quick guide to make Songkran safe and fun for you in 2022.

How to stay safe during Songkran in Thailand

If you’re currently in Thailand, then count yourself lucky! You'll be spoilt for choice with so much to see, do, and experience. But before you get excited, be sure to note the following tips.

    COVID-19 prevention measures

To avoid catching and spreading COVID-19, you’ll want to make sure you’re wearing a face mask in public and cleaning your hands with a sanitizer or warm water and soap. Of course, social distancing is recommended, but this may be difficult to follow when out in public.

Try to avoid poorly ventilated areas if you can too. If you feel unwell (e.g. experiencing a headache, high temperature, tiredness, etc.), self-isolate and monitor your symptoms.

Test yourself for COVID-19 before traveling to see loved ones

Since you will be in the public domain or visiting family, it is also worth stocking up on Antigen Test Kits (ATKs) to test yourself before traveling. This will also help increase confidence among those you travel with or in those you plan to visit.

Stay hydrated and know what to wear

If you’re outdoors for a long time, you’ll also want to have water available to hydrate yourself, especially if you plan to drink alcohol during the day. Hydration will help your body regulate itself and ensure you don’t suffer a heat stroke or compromise your immune system.

Additionally, wear light, breathable clothing to aid your cooling and prevent your body from overheating! You’ll thank yourself for choosing the right outfit too. Temperatures in Thailand are at their highest during this time of year - around the mid-30s and up! It can get muggy from the early hours of the day until the evening. So you may want to have spare clothing to change into if you have multiple plans during the day.

Planning for a massive water gun fight? Check with the local authorities

Whether members of the public can engage in water fights has been widely debated due to the risk it presents of spreading COVID-19. And for this year’s festivity in the capital, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has mentioned it will comply with the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration's (CCSA) decision to prohibit water-splashing during the Thai New Year holiday period. While it is clear what the rules are in Bangkok, you’re encouraged to check with the local authorities to make sure that you celebrate responsibly and safely.

Watch out when driving on the roads

If you plan to travel on the roads, then be aware that Thai roads during Songkran see an increase in road accidents every year! Make sure you have insurance to cover yourself against third-party liabilities and health insurance should the unexpected happen. Nothing will bring you total peace of mind except having insurance coverage for your trip.

If you are unfamiliar with the roads, plan your trip carefully and know where the nearest petrol stations with services are. It may help to leave before the festival period to avoid the immense build-up of traffic along Thailand’s main highways. While it’s essential to keep to the maximum speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour on highways in Thailand, it’s also important to exercise caution and be aware of people’s driving behavior.

It can be difficult when many vehicles are on the road, but you should avoid tail-gating vehicles to give yourself enough braking distance. And if you find yourself being tailgated by another motorist, try to change to the inner lane when it’s safe to let them pass. This way, you don’t feel pressured into speeding up.

Zigzagging in and out of lanes on the highway should also be avoided as it may confuse other motorists. Ensure you switch lanes safely by signaling in advance and determining the right timing to cross over while keeping to the correct speeds.

Where to go during the Songkran festival period

You’ll be pleased to know that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is hosting the ‘Amazing Songkran 2022 Celebrations’ and the ‘Songkran Music Heritage Festival 2022’ in Ayutthaya and Songkhla. There will also be other Songkran festivities in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Samut Prakan.

    Amazing Songkran 2022 Celebrations

TAT has organized Songkran festivities at 10 temples in Bangkok. Head to Wat Arun, Wat Pho, Wat Rakang, Wat Suthat, Wat Kalayanamit, Wat Prayun, Wat Ratchanatdaram, Wat Mahathat, Wat Saket (Phu Khao Thong), and Wat Ratchabophit to experience the magic and beauty of Songkran. Visitors are welcome to participate in the Song Nam Phra activity (pouring scented water over Buddha statues). There will be other activities and memorable moments for locals and expats alike.

If you are looking for traditional culture and performances such as Khon masked dance, Thai-style antiphon singing, Thai puppet show, and demonstrations of authentic Thai dessert making and fruit carving, head to Wat Saket and Wat Ratchabophit between April 13th-15th.

    The ICONIC Songkran Festival 2022

If you would like to combine shopping with the festivities of Songkran, then nowhere is worth going to than ICONSIAM from April 8-17th. You’ll find in and around the shopping center key festivities that focus on traditional and cultural aspects of Songkran, including Song Nam Phra and Rot Nam Dam Hua, kite displays, merit-making activities, and a replica of a Thai temple fair. Accessible by road, boat, or the BTS Gold line, you’ll surely appreciate the wonders of Songkran that the shopping center has to offer.

    Phra Pradeang Songkran Festival 2022

This region outside of Bangkok happens to be where the local people traditionally observe Mon ceremonies and occurs later than the official Songkran period. From April 22-24th, Phra Pradaeng in Samut Prakan will feature a broad range of cultural activities, including a floral procession, a parade of the local Mon people in their colorful traditional clothing, a Miss Songkran parade, and more. Visitors are encouraged to join in the merit-making activities in the local temples, enjoy traditional folk plays and cultural performances, and feast upon the local cuisine of Phra Pradaeng.

    Songkran Music Heritage Festival 2022

For this year’s Thai New Year Festival, TAT has chosen Ayutthaya’s Wat Phra Ram and Songkhla’s old town to host the ‘Songkran Music Heritage 2022’.

    Ayutthaya’s Wat Phra Ram

At Ayutthaya’s Wat Phra Ram, the TAT has scheduled a wide range of aged-old rituals and celebrations, including the Song Nam Phra activity, building Chedi Sai or sand stupas, as well as demonstrations of handicraft products; such as weaving Pla-Ta-Pian fish mobiles from palm leaves (a symbol of good health and prosperity for the new year). If you are a performance enthusiast, there will also be traditional shows, such as Khon masked dance and Likay Thai opera theater. You’ll also come across a field of marquees selling handicraft products and a plethora of famous delicacies of Ayutthaya.

    Songkhla’s old town

Once an important commercial trading center of Southern Thailand, the TAT has chosen Songkhla’s old town to host aged-old rituals and traditions, including Song Nam Phra activity and building Chedi Sai. Locals will make famous foods like Khao Yam or spicy rice salad and showcase the best of the province’s cuisine.

The old town will also be brightly illuminated to highlight the vibrant Sino-Portuguese-style houses and magnificent exteriors. Kites and brightly colored flags will adorn the town, combined with Chinese-style lanterns to promote the town's cultural heritage. Such a display of colors and tradition makes for a great Instagram moment if you’re looking to awe your followers! Head to Songkhla’s most photographed tourist attraction – the Golden Mermaid statue on Samila Beach while you’re there too!

Nam Thip Pi Mai Muang Chiang Mai

Delve deeper into the meaning of Songkran and culture in Chiang Mai by witnessing the ceremony of creating Nam Thip, or lustral water. The aged-old ritual was reintroduced by the TAT in 2021 using water from three sacred sources at Wat Buppharam, Doi Angkhang or Doi Inthanon, and the Ping River for the Coronation of King Rama X. This year, the ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 10th at Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep and visitors can register for a chance to receive a sample of the water.

  14. Imagine a gender equal world.

A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

Together we can forge women’s equality.

    Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias

    image_50456577-1024x768.jpg

On March 8th 2022, BISP students joined individuals and organisations around the world as they celebrated International Women’s Day with this year’s global theme being #BreakTheBias

Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough, action is needed to level the playing field.

Across the school students will had the opportunity to learn about pioneering women in history who have broken the norms of their time. The day marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality and is a day dedicated to celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

BISP Primary students engaged in a variety of activities that taught them about pioneering women in history as well as engaged in activities where the students were encouraged to think of an ‘inspirational woman’ in their own lives. BISP secondary students took part in an International Women’s Day Student Online Workshop with UWC Thailand. The workshop was hosted for any students over 14 who wanted to have the opportunity to discuss stereotypes, prejudice and bias.

Through the day students were challenged to find ways to actively identify and call out gender bias, discrimination and stereotyping each time they see it in order to support women’s rights.

Will you help break the bias?

Cross your arms to show solidarity. Strike the IWD 2022 pose and share your #BreakTheBias image, video, resources, presentation or articles on social media using #IWD2022 #BreakTheBias to encourage further people to commit to helping forge an inclusive world.
