  1. Penelope, I have a 50 inch Pioneer Plasma hooked up to an HTPC as well.  I use Meedio as the interface software and ThearterTek as a player.  Both are optimized for HD viewing and the results are quite extraordinary.  I love it.

Same plasma as me. I also have the Pioneer DVS969AVI DVD player and VSX AX5 Receiver..... HDMI and i-Link connections.

I connect my HTPC to Plasma using a DVI to HDMI cable, use Powerstrip to tweak the display settings (overscan etc ...)..running windows XP, PowerDVD. Played around with MEDIA PORTAL a little for interface software, but went back to standard win xp. Have you seen Windows MediaCentre OS in the malls ? The new Windows MediaCentre KEYBOARD looks cool too !!

  2. ahhh..its too much...the speaker placements are killing me !!

Don't worry. Rest assured that there those of us who, if living alone, would put speaker placement above comfort, convenience and aesthetics. Unfortunately, many of us are living with others who might not appreciate the fact the one door of the closet no longer opens because that space is now occupied by a properly placed right-front speaker. I did the best I could in order to maximize both listening pleasure and domestic tranquility.

    :o

On the 5th day, god invented the "home theatre room extension side project" :D

  3. Plenty of sharks of the coast of Thailand, you can see the common black tip reef sharks with just a quick snorkel off the coast of Koh Tao.

Attacks and Great Whites and all those dangers you tend to associate with sharks are limited to certain places around the world, such as Africa, the American West Coast and Australia.  Of course the lack of surfers here also cuts down the amount of attacks.

  4. Here's mine.  Speaker placement is not to bad  :o.

PS: Penelope are you female?  Not meaning to be sexist but I have not met many computer and home theartre buffs who are of the female persuasion.

male.females dont understand the necessity to drop 550K baht on a Pioneer high defintion pure digital home theatre..hehe.

"penelope" may seem like a female name, but it is, in this case an acronym. I find it funny cos I like to draw out obvious reactions.

  5. If legally married (with papers) to thai women, do you still need a work permit to work in thailand to support her...have been in thailand over three years as expat with non img visa now...some say yes...some say no...so not sure

in other words...is there any way around having to have work permit to work on your own or to help her in a business up front?  i know amount coming in or in bank annually goes down to 400,000 baht from current stand alone 800,000 requirement with just non img...thanks.

    it is most definately yes.

even if you have permanent residency, you still need a work permit.

it is not until you obtain thai citizenship that you dont require a work permit.

  6. Hi all, this is my first posting and i am looking for help, i have visited 6 times and want to move there, i have 90k in my arse pocket and i'm 46. is it too early to leave the rat race, how much and where is the best place to go(on the coast), what eligibility have i to work there,my proffesion is engineering, could someone give me a pointer in the righ direction as to how to start the ball rolling.

                                                                    Kind regards Jack

To get permanent residency (aka Immigrant visa), you must first have at least 3 non interrupted 1 yearly permit extensions of your Non-Immigrant permit and also be subject to the quota for each nationality.

    6 tourists entries

90K, not really much in any currency for retirement

46, too young for retirement visa

can you teach english ?? :o

  7. Aside from the big name islands, I am also interested in the smaller, more remote and less visited ones.I think the "Lonely Planet Thailand's Isalands and Beaches" guide is rubbish. Online information would me much better and up to date.

  8. I was reading a book about some sas guys once, and i remember reading that if a fight broke out in a bar,the sas guys role in it would be that he would have surveyed the bar upon arrival, continually monitored the location, seen the situation brewing 10 minutes before hand and when the fight errupted he would already be at another bar.

AFAIC, solving conflict by tactically avioding it is much cooler then confronting it head on and then dealing with all the repurcussions.

  9. KSR, somewhere I just avoid as much as possible. I remember my wife being harrassed there by drunken back-packers, our crime, we went there to meet some tourist friends and have spaghetti for dinner.

How many times do you hear of drunks getting into fights ?

Fortunately thai society is structured in such a way that financial and class barriers generally keep the riff-raff in their ghettos. Many of you are fortunate enough that you dont have to mix with the kinds of people or venues that are privy to this neanderthalish behaviour.

  10. thanks pp and ll,

awesome feedback, i'll follow those leads...I'm currently playing my WMVHD samples from my HTPC (very high spec), into my Pioneer High def plasma....I thought my Pioneer 969 HDMI DVD player looked great, this high def stuff is just incredible, I'm hooked !!

  11. this has been covered often.do a search.

My wife is dual citizen (Aussie/Thai).Both Australia and Thailand allow this duality.I dont know USA law, I believe USA does not allow dual citizenship.

This is how my wife operates her 2 passports :

When she enters and exits thai border posts she uses her thai passport.

When she enters and exits border posts of all other nations, she uses her Aussie passport.

  12. Penelope,

I am also looking for a total hideway and would like to know

the price range for the Evason Resort. It sounds an

    excellent revitalizer.

there are many rates for different room types.

basic suite would see you at 15,000 to 20,000 per night.

president suite you are looking at > 100,000 per night.

if you have a visa platinum or infinite card you can get a 35% discount on all room types.

the resort and all acitivitys/ammenties/services/food is stunning.

    Sila Evason
