  1. My friends neighbor got his water meter taken away only 2 days after the due date of the Bill.

This was in Pattaya just last month.

Used to be you were allowed 2 bills before cut off but then they started running out of meters to supply the increased demand so I guess just cut off immediately now so they can re-use the meter straight away.

  2. ^But to recieve Astro you will have to point your dish in a different direction from Vinasat.

Or have more than 1 dish.. or a moving dish..

    What is your question exactly?

I can only view 1 channel at a time. And the dish moves to what channel I want to watch....

    I don't have a question, just advice.

But if you want a question, do you have 2 dishes? or a moving dish?

  3. There isn't really a CBD as such in Ha Noi.

There's the old centre around Hoan Kiem Lake where there are some office, the original CBD lets say, but there are new office block being built farther out of the city centre in what is to be the new CBD. So which one will you be working in?

Ciputra International City is handy for both and flats there will cost around $1,000 per month, villas maybe between $1,500 and $2,000. It's close to West Lake and UNIS is located there (there's a waiting list to get in). Singapore International School is also located at Ciputra and is cheaper. Don't know about Concordia or its location.o

Ha Noi International School is a US curriculum school located in the Doi Gan area, near the Japanese and Australian Embassies and where the US Embassy is going to relocate, if it didn't already)..

If you want to go native and rent a VN style house yourself they should set you back around $500~$800 per month.

Cost of living is cheaper than Bangkok for some things (3G mobile internet $3 per month, cable TV same) but if you want to live a western lifestyle it will be more expensive, same like Bangkok.

  4. I know already what paper I need and I know also that in others places like Samui, Phuket or Pataya It's easy to get a driving license with a TOURIST visa. All I wanna know is , where in BANGKOK it's possible to get a driving license with a Tourist visa?

A friend of mine did his Thai driving license in Bangkok at Sukhumvit soi 99 (not sure) few years ago , I'd like to know if someone I've been there recently to get a Thai driving license with a tourist visa?

To answer to you guys above , if you get involved in a car accident by your fault , consequences will be worst .Much more money to pay with insurance if you own only a foreign and international driving license.

That's the reason why I want a get a Thai driving license.

Thank you in advance people, I hope that topic will help other people to get a easy TDL, biggrin.png

Not that easy, I was refused twice.

  5. Also, there was a discussion earlier in this forum on the meaning of the word "expat". For me, it is related to the terms of your contract, are you hired on "local" terms or on "expats" terms.

On local terms, the company check what is the average local salary for the position they want to fill, and that's what they are going to offer, usually without much extra advantages. On "expat" terms, the salary is often based on the salary for similar position at head quarter PLUS advantages linked to expatriation : housing, relocation program, education for the kids, annual air ticket to go home .... plus everything that previous colleagues were able to negotiate. And that can make a huge difference with people on expats terms being paid 2, 3, 5 ...times more than their colleagues hired on local terms.

The times I've been working here 'local' hire the only difference between me and the 'expats' of the company have been airfares and paid leave. The companies provided salary at the same level as their expats, accomodation, car and medical, except for 1 which didn't provide accomodation.

Edit: this reminds me of the thread about average Thai salaries where most posters had no idea what a Thai can really earn here. Not all working expats here are teachers, same as not all Thais are farmers.

But some working expats are farmers strangely enough. Go figure biggrin.png

    sent from my Wellcom A90+

They're the ones earning less than 20,000~30,000 a month so haven't voted.

  7. Do you actually know what channels you can get on Vinasat1?

    I can get these

    http://www.lyngsat.c...ages/kplus.html

    and these

    http://www.lyngsat.c...es/vtcvina.html

A lot less than the programming you can get on TrueVisions and not as much sport, especially EPL football at weekends.

The same channels as TrueVisions also gets criticised for showing old repeated movies continually (even though they are not resposible for the content).

Also some of the programming is dubbed in Chinese or Vietnamese.

Great if you wife is Vietnamese though as she can keep up with all the soaps (which are the same Korean or Chinese ones you get in Thailand but dubbed into Vietnamese) and news.

  8. Depends where you told them you'd pick them up on the form.

I usually get mine posted but have also picked up at the venue and at a Major Cineplex also (Major only give you a voucher though which you exchange at the venue for the real tickets anyway).

There's a TTM in Central Chidlom and one at Centralworld by the ice rink.

  9. It is significantly more expensive at Viet Nam embassy in BKK than online. Plus its a three-day waiting period unless you want to pay even more for the 'express fee'.

I don't recall it being "significantly more expensive" to get a visa from the Consulate before you go, I thought it was about the same.

The visa on arrival letter costs US$19 plus a stamping fee of $25 on arrival in Vietnam, the Consulates website says the standard fee is $40, though I think it was slightly more.

I will concede that the three day wait is not convenient to everyone, but it was convenient to me.

Like most embassies from countries in this part of the world the website is fairly useless and the fees haven't been updated in half a decade.

When I was at the consulate in person in November of 2010 it was 2,800 for a single entry tourist visa and 4,200 for a multi, if I remember correctly, WITHOUT the 'express' fee.

Depends on your nationality what the fee is but they will charge you for the express unless you say otherwise. Non-express should be around 1,800 for Brits, Yanks pay double I think.

Before you go to Hoi An check it's not flooded, there's storms hitting Viet Nam at the moment.

  10. I do not believe that 25% are in the '500,000 baht" per month range.. This is totally bull... But i do believe that majority of 'working' expats here in Thailand falls in the 15,000 baht to 30,000 baht range per month. Management expat from 30,000b all the way up till 200,000 baht (very rare, unless Big Multinational corporation sent you here to be based in Thailand)

For the rest of you expats who have a business here in Thailand, ranging from a small bar up to a big Maldives kind of resort to an airport. Well what can i say...

Seems like salaries have increased since I did a similar poll back in 2008 http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/187143-farang-salaries-in-los/ which would be about right.

As for 15k to 30k a month averages I don't know anyone who would get out of bed for that, nor 200k.

  11. I want to thank again whoever pointed out hotelscombined.com which compares hotel search sites based on full prices, i.e. after taxes and fees. The only accurate measure.

    Cough ... biggrin.png

    Cough Cough.

Beat you to it by 6 months

  12. i checked it on the internet 30 mins before she booked it and the price was 1,296 baht, when she came back 15 mins after booking she told me the price was higher, i looked on the internet again and the price was still 1,296 (all-in-fare)

should have used a debit card and book it online

look there's no point telling me what i should have done, if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle, the g/f has booked before using these air asia desks and it's always the same price as the internet plus 100 baht (i think) handling charge

I've been told it's 500 Baht extra by the desk staff (although not in Phuket).

  13. This is what I would use:

    House number

    Building or Moo bahn number

    Tambon name

    Amphoe name / City name

    Province

    Postal code

    Thailand

What he said except that some places can have a building AND moobahn number.

  14. For an easy commute to Plauk Daeng area you would be better to live south of the city, Huay Yai, Ban Amphur or maybe Bang Saray, easy over on to 331 highway.

???? Pluak Daeng is North East of Pattaya so much better living in East Pattaya to get on the 36 or in LaemChabang, Huay Yai would work at a push.

Edit: you'll also find other mothers at the school you choose.
