  1. Took a minivan back from Jomtien to BKK with my family. It costs 170baht per person. We took the toll road so it was fairly fast. The seating isn't bad unless you get the back row of seats which seats four people. This van dropped us off under the expressway near victory monument. I gues it was the Wipawadee Rangsit road. I would take it again if I lived downtown. The will also pick you up at your hotel if you have their number.

As for a cheap hotel for the price you listed I don't know what to tell you. You probably won't find any near the beach for that price. The APEX which is in a bit is around 5 -600 baht I guess but it doesn't have a bathtub. You probably have to look inland a bit to find something. If you are just going for a weekend you should be able to find something walking around there. Oh, Pattaya is pretty noisy. If you are looking for a quiet place you might want to look somewhere else.

  2. NIMBY just came to mind. Everyone wants things to be the way they like it. The people who have been here a while have more support when in disagreements. Newcomers will have a different experience as time goes by if they make friends. I've always thought that there are some different groups of people here who know each other. The old timers that hang out in this section might not know much about the people in sports unless they are into sports. The sports section is full of real diehard sports people in my view. I wonder how divided things could get with 500 new people posting.

BTW Jet There was another acronym for something like 'The last one in close the door'

  3. What does it mean? Take a guess. What do you think of the the ever-growing societies on boards like this. Some people have been around a long time and others have just arrived. I've been reading this forum since way back even though I have a new name now. I haven't posted or read much here lately but today going through a few posts I see much more nasty interaction between members on the threads I've looked at. Are things changing? What will time bring to this board? Will the longtimers stake their ground? Will people hang on forever as leaders? Will people get bored or will a new internet sensationtake the place of forums like this? Could the number of posters here double or triple or quadruple with Thaivisa still being Thaivisa? Will new site managers(our government) in the coming years/decades relax the forums rules or tighten them? What do you think will become of this place?

  4. Do what you can. We all have different situations to deal with. Reading the posts here was pretty funny. Everyone is out to get each other. I think the erm experts say that both parents speaking their native language is best but I don't think its a 100% success rate. The experts also are still looking for WMDs in Iraq. But if you can do the two langauge thing why not. It's probably easier for foreigners who met their wives using their native language to continue using it. Some only communicate with their wives and others in Thai. It's a lot harder to go back to your native language when you are forced to speak first. just my opinion.

In my case, I speak thai to my 3 year old. I also speak Thai to my two step-daughters who are 10 and 15. My situation is a bit wierd as I don't live with my family due to work reasons. I see my kids probably once every month and half upcountry. Up there its all Thai/Esarn. My daughter knows some English from school and at home. She speaks Thai pretty well at her age. She has memorized many Thai songs from school and at home including some of the songs my 15-year-old daughter listens too. She also uses Esarn language a bit. Like one of the other posters mentioned about his wife, my 3 year old uses Esarn language when she gets angry. COuld that be that that is the language she hears from her mom when she's angry?

I wouldn't worry what other people think. I know many young Thais who have picked up the English language despite having two Thai-speaking parents. One of the best ways to improve your ability with a language is to spend some time overseas. If you really want your kid to pick up the English language or Thai language living overseas can make a difference.

Back to people putting others down. Sorry to be cynical but no matter what you do there are many other issues which will affect your child's life. If you smoke around your child, you damage your child's lungs. If you drink and drive you endanger your child. If you live in a polluted place you're probably damaging your child's health. Just living in Thailand is dangerous in itself. Then there is the fact that statistically there is a 50% divorce rate. So for some, your efforts to teach a language may be cut short and with divorce the child may face psychological issues. I just wanted to mention this as some people think being bilingual is a life and death issue for their child.

  5. Did you talk to the guy after the event? What did he say to you? Why were you worried about his son? Aren't members of your staff getting involved? Usually the uni would want to help work this situtation out since it sounds like it happened on campus and involves two employees.

  6. What's wrong with her reading. Don't have a kid. She will be busy and you will find that you can't do anything anymore without a whining brat to spoil it. Why not teach her how to use the internet. She could take some classes on cooking, massage, or whatever. Don't have kids! Get fish. Start a website and have her go around taking pictures to post on it. Don't have kids! get an easle and get her painting. Tell her to write a book. Do anything but don't have kids. Get her to post videos on youtube about her life and opinions etc. Don't have kids!

  7. The government should see that the poorest Thai farmers are able to get land rather than others who just happen to have money. Some farming families are farming just 3-5 rai of land. I just don't trust the gov't. I'm sure certain people connected to people in government will get the land offered. cronyism and neptotism. Sorry for being so cynical.

  8. It amazes me how common getting something done like stents is nowadays. Lately, I hear of more and more older people getting them. A friend just got one done in the UK. It's the new world I guess. I hope that I don't have to have any in the future but the way I have lived so far says I'm heading to trouble sometime. I may just have to accept going down with my ship though as I haven't the dinero to do lots of those things. You know, the poorest people out there eat the worst food. Who will pay for all the stents that are going to be needed for them? Just a thought.

  9. Well, I guess new immigrants to the US tend to have kids so that might account for it. Most all my friends from school in the US have at most one.

Here in Thailand I guess the younger people in their teens and twenties aren't having as many kids. The people I know here in their thirties and forties mostly have at least two or three kids. All the teachers in their thirties at my school have two and the odler teachers two.

I guess a lot of the new immigrants to the US want American babies. Then again some of that US birthrate count goes to foreigners having babies on US soil which become US citizens. It's not much but there are enough to have the term 'anchor baby' coined.

  10. From the website cia.gov this comes from the world factbook...

    For the United States:

    Birth rate:

    14.16 births/1,000 population (2007 est.)

    For Thailand:

    Birth rate:

    13.73 births/1,000 population (2007 est.)

Unless I am wrong Thailand has a lower birthrate than the US. Do you believe these statistics?

I would have thought the US would be lower than Thailand. When you go upcountry there seem to be kids all over the place.

  11. Well, who knows where this market goes? People don't believe in a lot of things nowdays like Global Warming, the war on terrorism, etc. If any of you know what the market is going to do then good luck to you. If you had held you stocks during the great depression you might have made billions on them by now if the companies are still in business. If this is a great depression then in 50 years some people will look back and say you should have just held your stocks through it. But the people who actually can time the market will make more money because they'll sell out then buy in gaining shares on those who just hold through hard times. Holding through hard times just keeps your share of the company stabile it doesn't offer any more profit than those who buy in just as the market starts to move up.

Everyone seems to be a know-it-all. It sure would be good if someone in this world actually accepted responsibility for their words and actions.

As for me I am unsure of the future. It doesn't look good until 2009 from what the big boys are saying. Then there are those who are saying things look even worse. Whatever the case someone is going to get rich during the next few years if not in the next day, week, month or decade. You've got to play to win they say.

  12. I think Monday will be the day of reckonig. The holdouts will finally admit to there being a recession. Some stocks in the US have been destroyed pricewise and their owners can't be doing to well due to that. There has been a lot of talk about mortgage owners and investors in housing investments suffering but now there are plenty of people who have lost loads in other investments who will be complaining. I think some of the older folks who thought they would be retiring will now have to put off that idea unless their stocks double in value. Those that sold early on are doing well though. The rest have to wait for better days.

It's funny how the social security system and the stock market are so similar. You've got to have faith that when your time comes that some money will be there for you. They always talk of the social security system going bellyup but it seems sometimes stocks can be just as bad.
