  1. I read a snippet in one of the local papers before Christmas that there was to be a reunion of US military stationed at U Tapao airbase U in the 60's

    Anyone have any further info?

The last I heard, this 4th reunion will be from October 9th to 24th. Email the guys organizing it at: [email protected] (if that email address didn't make it onto the TV board, here it is written out: reunionthailand at gmail.com

  2. Well, after extensive searches on the wonderful TV search engine and the google engine at the top of the forum pages, I couldn't find any info on where in Pattaya to go this year to watch the Super Bowl. Besides my post of last year about the super bowl in Pattaya, I found 1 from 2002 in Sisaket, 1 from 2004 in Udorn and quite a few in Bangkok. So here we go again guys. What have you heard about who is showing the super bowl in Pattaya next Monday morning live, what is their food offering, etc.? I would prefer a bar that allows smoking (tobacco). :o

Anyone know if Coop is doing it again at the "Chicken Coop"?

Thanks for any info you guys have.

  3. In the year 2000 what I did was found an old Suzuki Caribbean chassis (1988 model), stripped it out completely, and then:

extended the body about 12 inches

made big front and rear 5/8 th inch steel bumpers (rear with trailer hitch)

put channel iron 3/8 th inch all around it

both the above steel reinforcements are to catch Thai motorcycles! and to make it less prone to rollover.

made the front grill look like a Jeep Cherokee

made a new hood in order to accommodate the bigger engine

raised the roof (so my big head would fit inside better)

put in custom made bucket seats

put in two bucket seats behind and made them removable (wing nuts)

Put in Suzuki Vitara 1600 CC engine complete with drive train and auto transmission

that is electronic ignition and fuel injected

    made big side windows

    put in new air conditioner

put in another radiator for the auto transmission - air con

    put in power steering

    put in power brakes

customized the dash and put in a tachometer

put in customized console to accommodate auto trans

    installed heavy duty suspension

put on big off road tires

    mag wheels

customized 2 tone metal flake paint (about 35,000 baht worth)

    installed alarm system

left in the stock front wheel lock out hubs and differential (4 wheel drive)

    put in all new headliner

    carpeted interior

matched seat covers with side door panels

made rear door one unit (reinforced) with spare tire mount

put in numerous extra exterior lights

That is about all I can remember about the major modifications and installations. As you can well imagine, all this didn't go without having some problems in the shake-down/snap-in period. Had no major problems with the suspension, drive train or engine. Did have some electrical problems and a bunch of minor fixes. Right now, all that I know is wrong with it is that the windshield washer reservoir is cracked and needs replaced, and I don't think I will ever be able to get the speedometer working properly with the new suspension and drive train and big wheels. After the first about 4 months with no problems I had intermittent problems with the engine stalling. The Thai mechanics messed around with it and it ran fine again for 3 months. Then it stalled again 3 times. Had different Thai mechanics work on it and so far has been running fine for the past 7 or 8 years.

Hasn't been in any accidents that would hurt the frame, only motorcycles hitting it while parked in the street. The motorcycles and riders come out much worse for the wear!

I have added up the major expenses I have spent building it, and it comes out in the region of 325,000 Baht 8 years ago. One hel_l of a lot of work went into building it, and I have tried to put the best stuff in it I could. It passes the Thai emission tests with flying colors. I have the real and proper registration books for it. The insurance for the first year cost about 16,000 baht for full insurance and with no claims has gone down to approximately 9,000 baht. The reason it was so high to begin with is because I didn't have any insurance records for the 2 years prior. The reason I put in the alarm system is because in Thailand on a 4 wheel drive vehicle without alarm system, if it is stolen the insurance company will only pay 1/2 the value. The reason it requires the emission tests annually is because the chassis (therefore the book) is listed as 1988, therefore being beyond the 7 year cutoff, regardless that the engine is brand new. I don't know if that alarm requirement still applies now?

We haven't put on very many kilometers on it at all over the years as my wife only used it for about 2 years to go on the weekly hash runs to sell hot dogs for her charity about 6 years ago. I would estimate it has probably in the range of 20,000 K on it at the max.

It has been a dependable and cheap vehicle for the past 8 years, and it is still a head turner. It still has the original lock out hubs for the 4 wheel drive, and automatic with power steering and brakes. We hardly ever use it anymore since we have to walk to far to where we have to park it since they have built buildings all around my place in the past few years and there is no parking anywhere near me anymore. :o I think we may even sell it come to think of it since we don't use it hardly at all. PM me if interested, I am located in Pattaya. I will also put this in the classified section to see if anyone may be interested. I hope these photos come out OK! I think somewhere around 140,000 baht would be a fair price? AS IS condition, make me an offer! :D

  5. In Zen, Central World, a walk from skytrain, on the 7th floor if i remember correctly, they have several pressure cookers.

The import ones are quite expensive. I bought the Zebra brand (made in Thailand),medium size, for approx 2500 baht.

The quality is superb, as good as the italian pressure cooker I have back home. Zebra has several valves, just follow the instructions and you will be fine.

I have an old "Presto" cooker a customer carried over here for me years ago. I had to get a new one because I couldn't find new gaskets for an old German brand I had. Now the "Presto" gasket is starting to become brittle and I could use a new gasket. Do any of you know if "Zen" or any other place here in Thailand sells gaskets for pressure cookers? They don't work so well when the gasket gets old! :o I find that pressure cookers are about the only way I can get some of these dried beans to soften up.

  6. It depends on the immigration official, but usually they do not accept a joint account unless it has double the required amount in it.

    --

    Maestro

Probably completely correct on depends on the official. I have used a joint account for the last 3 years in Jomtien for my retirement extensions. First time they did require that I had the original and copy of marriage certificate, but last 2 years I took the original and copies and wasn't asked again. They haven't required me to have double the 800,000 YET, but who knows what tomorrow may bring?

  7. It can be any income.

Also if you have any money that comes in from outside the country it can be used. It could be proven by a bank book that shows a transfer to the account (even money gram or western union transfers could be used). You are subject to taxation on income earned outside Thailand if you are here more than 180 days in a year.

UbonJoe: Am I reading the underlined part out of context, or are you really saying that all of us who live here have to pay tax in Thailand on any income earned outside if here more than 180 days? If that is what you are saying, I haven't heard anything about that requirement. Years ago we all used to have to get a "tax stamp" from the local amphur if we were here for more than 180 days (or maybe it was 90 days?), but I don't remember that being based on income, just that we paid something like 1,900 baht for the tax stamp based on time here not income from outside. Luckily that was stopped many years ago. Clear this up for me if you don't mind. TIA

  8. many model in carrefour but if you smoke inside the room the filter is full after a few days and filter are expensive

I'll have to get off my lazy butt and go check out Carrefour. I've never been in the store. The missus always does all the shopping. Just too hard to explain what I am looking for, so I'd better go myself this time. I appreciate your reply, that's why I asked the question here so I could get some experienced answers. Any idea of the brand-model to buy, and possibly how much and long approximately before the filters need replacing? Any models have filters that can be cleaned? TIA

  9. I've decided to give my old Esarn wife a break finally and am looking to buy a room sized air cleaner/filter to help clear up the air a bit. I've heard that HEPA style are the best? Anyone with any experience with these cleaners and recommendations? Where to buy in Pattaya. Filters, cost, frequency of filter changes, etc. The room size is only about 36 sq mtrs and is air conditioned, but I smoke. No windows to open since we've double paned all windows for noise. We do have a small exhaust fan, but it wouldn't hurt to be able to filter out more of the smoke I think. Appreciate any recommendations. TIA

  10. On Pattaya Tai, just up from Friendship Supermarket going towards Sukumvit. The Electrical shop is on the left, has a blue sign above the door but can't tell you the name as it's all written in Thai, loads of electrical items on display anyway, so hard to miss. The guy there is great and can speak english. He has everything. He rewired my whole house.

About how far towards Sukhumvit is this shop Josky? Can you give me a little bit more precise location please? Can you let us know the cost of rewiring your house approximately? Like how large is the house, etc.? I need to get one of my shophouses rewired completely. It is 4 or 5 stories (depending upon how you count floors) and needs complete rewiring from the electric meter in. All the old wiring is in the walls. I'm assuming that on a building this old, it will need to be rewired with the new wires (and conduit if they use that) needs to be on the outside of the walls since I think you would have to tear down the old building completely to put the wiring inside the walls? Thanks in advance for any info.

  11. Hi Kaojai. Can you tell me specifically where you found the info about "Pariet" causing a new set of problems if taken daily long term please? I've been taking Omeprazole (Nexium) daily for over 3 years now. I looked every place I could think of to find out if there were reported side effects of long term use, and could find nothing specifically related. I even emailed the question to the makers of "Nexium" and asked them, but no reply. I've posted on various med related web boards and so far no one has come up with anything concrete. I hope you can clarify? Thanks in advance.

I took Pariet briefly because of acid reflux, but taking it every day, long term can cause a whole new set of problems.
  12. Quite a shocker going down the list of "New Posts", and my own name comes up! :D What's even more shocking was there were 5 posts and no one said anything bad about me. :D:D And now probably my thousands of wives and daughters and grand daughters will be able to find me now. :o

Contrary to popular belief, I'm still kickin'. Still in the same place that I've been in since it was built more than 20 years ago. But, they have changed so many other building and roads here in Pattaya that I have trouble finding my way home some nights and don't make it back for a couple of days. Sorry I can't recognize who you guys are that posted by looking at your profiles and Thai Visa handles. Maybe you can email or pm me to remind me? I'm not getting old.. I AM old..

Regarding our "Computers For Thai Kids Charity Project". We have now sent out more than 600 computers to schools all over Thailand in the past 10 years. All of them donated by you guys and a bunch of companies, embassies and hospitals. After Lek and I finally get a few of them up and running, we bundle together as many of them that are equal in speed and capabilities as we can, and then give one of the headmasters from one of the schools who have sent us letters of request a call. You should see the processions when they come pick up the computers! They bring most of the village with them I think. From the Nai Ampur's and Pu Yai Bahn's on down to every teacher in the school. Quite a village event when they get the old computers to take back with them. We were finally successful in getting computers in all the schools in Pattaya, so Lek stopped teaching in our shop house now. Plus we had a fire that wiped all our computers out and I'm just too lazy to put enough of them together to use here to teach the few kids that would still come by. Since we don't let them play games or get on chat rooms, the numbers cut way down to only the really dedicated kids and we teach them when they stop by individually. Our proudest accomplishment was when one of our garbage kids graduated as a nurse from Chulalongkorn school of nursing. We went to the graduation. Of course I was the only farang there and the head professor said I was a first. A first what, he didn't say... :D I even had to wear a suit and tie! B)

When the big Hollywood productions hit Thailand, I usually get a call to help out with casting/production/location/military advisor/etc., and if I think I'm up to it and like the stars and director I do the movie. Have done 19 of the big ones now. Last 2 being up in Chiang Mai doing the Stallone and Denzell Washington shoots. Not much casting work on either of them luckily, since it's getting harder all the time doing those 20+ hours a day required when in movie production. The one before that was the "Rescue Dawn" shoot which starred a guy named Christian Bale. I made it clear up to being the big shot "casting director" in that one for a while. That was a lot of very hard, long days and nights. Took it's toll on my old body, but "there's no business, like show business"! Plus I got to see a lot of my old Hollywood actor friends who were in the cast. Marshall Bell and I had a great time again as usual when I see him on locations.

Lek (Dracula) in now attending university studying for a bachelor's degree in Gov't/Public Administration if you guys can believe that? She says she's going to be the PM, Nai Amphur, Pattaya Mayor or something like that. Wouldn't put it past her actually, since she's got the students and faculty all eating out of her hand already. Not bad for me since I go downstairs and sometimes there's 10 or 15 young University students having her teach them something or other. :D Of course, I have to help.. Can't really understand why old Dracula is going to University. She knows EVERYTHING already!

Surprisingly enough, I found out that there has actually been 2 books written that I feature prominently in. One is by Paul Young who was my Marine Platoon Commander in Recon in Vietnam and is named: "First Recon - Second to None". There is even a picture of me in it getting some medal or another. I was sure a lean, mean fighting machine back then. What a handsome man! I showed the picture to Lek, and all she said was "What Happened?" :D The other book is buy a Pulitzer Prize winning author named Jonathan Stevenson and is called: "Hard Men Humble: Vietnam Vets Who Wouldn't Go Home". He threw in more than 30 pages about me in that one. There's a lot of us old, long time in Thailand expats in that book.

Sorry to bore all of you guys with this stuff. Just too lazy to pm each of the posters back with the update that I'm still alive :D .

  13. Can anyone remember the Spinneys supermarket next to Royal Garden that got wiped out when Foodland opened?

    Poor location for residents again.

Well I was waiting for someone else to speak up here, but no takers so here goes! :D

Back in the 80's, before Spinney's relocated under the Royal Garden, it was located on Soi Post Office. It was almost at the end of the soi near the corner of beach road. It was in 4-6 shophouses and since it was basically the only upscale market in town at the time for farang food items, it did a roaring business there. Note: The original Friendship market also had a bit of farang food items also then. The original is still located the same place on S. Pattaya Rd, about half way between the corner of 2nd Road and Beach Road. The boss of the new Friendship was only a very young girl then. The main problem with using the old Friendship back then was that they had 2 dogs that used to hide under the desk at the door going in, and they would attack your ankles each and every time you went in! Never bit hard, but scared the hel_l out of you when you weren't expecting it! :D

Just a bit of trivia here, I know this has nothing to do with the topic itself. :o

  14. Mind posting the website address jeepholt, my missus has been asking about going there recently.

All I can find on a web search is

    http://www.pattayapeople.com/default.asp?F...;IdArticle=6287

and a link to this thread that we're in.

Here's the website I found "Pattaya Parent" (hope it is ok to post it here?): http://www.orientalcruisespattaya.com/home/ehome.html

I still haven't tried the Oriental Star yet, and appreciate the responses I've received so far. Well, MOST of them that is! :o

  15. I seem to remember that someone posted something about the "Oriental Star" floating restaurant, but I had as much luck as I usually do trying to find old topics using the search function. In other words, I couldn't find zip sh*t!

I found the website for the "Oriental Star" but I can't read the menu on the site. Even saving and magnifying parts of the menu didn't work to try to find out some prices.

Their ticket and reservations office page didn't show which end of walking street it is located either?

I am hoping someone has been to dinner on the boat and can let me know if it is good value and possibly some costs. Plus any tips on how to get to the boat without having to walk all the way down walking street. Will have wife and sister in law with me and don't look forward to all my old flames yelling at me the whole way up the street! :o

  16. Have been watching this forum and the "sports" forum, and even posted this question in the "sports" forum. So far, I haven't heard of anywhere in Pattaya that is hosting a Super Bowl party (or even a small gathering of friends) for the Super Bowl yet. So I am posting here to see if anyone might know of a place or two? Apologies if out of line posting in this forum. TIA :o

  17. May be referring to the Thai song by "Mai" about 20 years ago? I don't remember her real name, something like Mai Jalermbula, but it was a pretty catchy tune and went something like " loo me loo, my mee fair, kor tee, kor tee, kor tee". Of course that is in my excellent Thai/English transcription.. :o Sorry if I took it back to what the OP asked in the first place. Did enjoy reading all you guys comebacks though. Good reason for it being in the "Fun, entertainment" topic.

Stop press: Just been told by my old Esarn wife that she thinks it was by a lady named Pumpuang Duanjan who I think died about 10 years ago. And of course, my missus is ALWAYS right! And I just saw that Siripon already said that! :D Again I apologize for my blatent butchering of Thai/English translation. Don't really know how much good this will do the OP though on where to find the song. I know it is one of the old favorites though and I think of it everytime I hear someone say "Mai Loo". :D

  18. "Darky" toothpaste with the picture of Al Joleson on it was GREAT, but the forces of poitical correctness vanished it years ago. I always wonder how far their sales went down when they changed the name to "Darlie"? :D

I've had small and large boxes of "Darkie" lying around for many years now. Had forgotten about it until last week I noticed an opened tube in the hong nam already half emptied. Immediately questioned my old Esarn wife about it. Got the normal dumbfounded look :D Did manage to save one of the large tubes for a keepsake though. :o

  19. 1200 Baht One Way

    I Dont think so

Tell your brother to go to lowest floor in the airport were you will find a meter taxi stand

    It is opposite Nero cafe

just look down when he comes through immigration near the revolving doors

Keep away from the Touts on the Main Floor

Say to the Touts "Mo Bye Pun Me Loat Cap" With a smile

" Slight Isaan Accent there Lads " :-))

"No Go I Have Car" Rough Translation

Sorry For the spelling but the Wife Has Not taught me that yet

It Will keep them all at Bay

    Works every time for me

There will be a few waiting for a Taxi down there

Make sure you tell the girl on the desk you want it on the meter and you will pay the tolls

660 Baht all in to Pattaya Soi 8 Flipper lodge 10 days ago

    Shaggs

Hi Shaggs. When you say "go to the lowest floor" and "opposite Nero cafe", I take it that means the big, inexpensive Thai food place down where all the buses used to pick up, and the taxi stands used to be? If so, then I think I have finally figured out two things I have been trying to find out for a while now. #1 is: the name of the Thai restaurant on the lowest level, and #2: that cars are allowed to drive in to the lowest level? Good to know if that is what you are saying, since I've been wondering if I could meet people in the Thai restaurant on the bottom floor, and when they arrive I could call my driver who is waiting in the parking lot and tell him to pick us up on the bottom level at the restaurant. I was told before that cars (taxi's) were not allowed to drive into the lowest level? Also have been hearing that the taxi stands have moved up to the arrivals level (level 2) now? Sure would make things comfortable and easy if this is correct. Hope I can finally clear this up in my own mind, or what's left of it! :o I'm getting a head ache trying to sort this all out! And that 660 baht all in to the Flipper lodge on the meter including tolls. Doesn't sound like that driver made much money that day. Thanks for your answers.
