  1. 1200 Baht One Way

    I Dont think so

Tell your brother to go to lowest floor in the airport were you will find a meter taxi stand

    It is opposite Nero cafe

just look down when he comes through immigration near the revolving doors

Keep away from the Touts on the Main Floor

Say to the Touts "Mo Bye Pun Me Loat Cap" With a smile

" Slight Isaan Accent there Lads " :-))

"No Go I Have Car" Rough Translation

Sorry For the spelling but the Wife Has Not taught me that yet

It Will keep them all at Bay

    Works every time for me

There will be a few waiting for a Taxi down there

Make sure you tell the girl on the desk you want it on the meter and you will pay the tolls

660 Baht all in to Pattaya Soi 8 Flipper lodge 10 days ago

Hi Shaggs. When you say "go to the lowest floor" and "opposite Nero cafe", I take it that means the big, inexpensive Thai food place down where all the buses used to pick up, and the taxi stands used to be? If so, then I think I have finally figured out two things I have been trying to find out for a while now. #1 is: the name of the Thai restaurant on the lowest level, and #2: that cars are allowed to drive in to the lowest level? Good to know if that is what you are saying, since I've been wondering if I could meet people in the Thai restaurant on the bottom floor, and when they arrive I could call my driver who is waiting in the parking lot and tell him to pick us up on the bottom level at the restaurant. I was told before that cars (taxi's) were not allowed to drive into the lowest level? Also have been hearing that the taxi stands have moved up to the arrivals level (level 2) now? Sure would make things comfortable and easy if this is correct. Hope I can finally clear this up in my own mind, or what's left of it! :o I'm getting a head ache trying to sort this all out! And that 660 baht all in to the Flipper lodge on the meter including tolls. Doesn't sound like that driver made much money that day. Thanks for your answers.

  2. Well if you've been paying Bt1600/1800 for 10 years then why are you only now complaining about the price ?Even a couple of years ago you could get a taxi from Bangkok to Pattaya for Bt1000 and you can now from the new airport.

My brother is coming in next month. Can you explain to me how you get the 1,000 baht price please? Does that include tolls to Pattaya? I would rather email my brother telling him how to pick up the taxi at the airport, rather that having one from here run up there and wait for him. That way, there is no worries about the plane being delayed, etc. TIA

  3. Hospital Corpsman "Doc" with A Co, 3rd platoon, 1st Recon Bn, 1st Mar Div, FMF (Rein) at the time. Got a bronze star and purple heart in that period courtesy of our good friends a little bit east of here. A book out about my recon platoon (and a picture of me back when I was a lean, mean, fighting machine), receiving one of my medals. Showed that picture to my wife, and in her inevitable Isarn quickness said: "what happened to you?. :D I'm wondering that myself. :o The book is written by Paul Young (my platoon commander) and is titled "First Recon - Second To None". I ordered it through amazon in the used books section and I think it only ended up costing about $1.

  4. Some good suggestions so far, but sadly, except for the fish weighing scales, none I hadn't already thought of. :D I also appreciated the couple of posts about Air Asia being strict. My Thai wife (well Esarn, Isahn, Isan,Isarn?)and I are not worried about the weight at all. It's just my brother and his rather corpulent American wife (who thinks she needs a full wardrobe daily), who I'm sure will be overweight - the luggage that is! She emailed me and said that the American air carrier allows about 100 lbs per person on their flights for their luggage? She says she is trying to pare her baggage weight down to stay under that! Wow. :D I think it would be fair if Air Asia weighed her physically, and then allowed the rest of us to make up our reduced weights by letting us carry on/check the difference in weight between us and her? :D Ok, enough of the joking around. I do sometimes think about the major weight differences between people on planes though. Maybe they should charge by total weight (person plus baggage) or make them buy 2 tickets if they add up to more than say - 250 lbs? This should fire up our friends who are larger than most, and also the Yank bashers! :bah:

In my 38 yrs here in Thailand, I've never found the cheapo bathroom scales to be even close to accurate. I even went to Tony's gym and used the 4 sets of scales I found there to weigh a bag, and came up with a 7 kilo difference between the scales. That even includes the medical type balance scale. Same at the Thai market behind my house. I haven't found any hotels yet who have scales, at least not near any of the pubs I was at. :o Spoke with one of postmasters I've known for a long time and he told me I could come in after hours and weigh the bags there for free. We all know how that works out in final tally; somehow tipping to his advantage somewhere along the line. Still looking for some fish scales that I can afford here in Pattaya. I am leaning toward finding somehow to weigh the bags prior to going to the airport now since that is leaving it a bit late if enough stuff can't be shuffled around to come within the weight limits. Happened that way to my wife and I when we went to New Zealand on holiday last year. We were allowed I think 30KG's on Thai Air, then when flying from Aukland to Christchurch on Air New Zealand we got stung with fairly heavy baggage charges. Another problem is: we are taking 4 different Air Asia flights, so whatever is overweight has to be multiplied X4. If my brother and his wife were not flying straight back to the USA after our Cambodia junket, we could leave the excess baggage here at my house, but they are going straight back. I did search the threads for storage at the airport and found it was reported to be 100 baht per bag per day and that there was a lot of theft at stored baggage.

And before anyone mentions the obvious; I already told my brother to cut down on the kilo's he brings with him - by throwing away his wife's ticket! :D

So, thanks so far for the suggestions. Hope somebody can come up with more suggestions for us. TIA

  5. Am posting this in both the Suvarnabhumi Airport forum and the Pattaya forum since I think it is a question concerning both places? Don't know if it's against the rules or not. Apologize if it is and I'm sure a mod will straighten me out!

Any of you guys know somewhere in the airport that you can use scales to weigh your baggage BEFORE getting to the airline check in counters? Reason I'm asking is that Air Asia only allows 15 KG's total and 4 of us flying will probably have to do some shifting of stuff in luggage in order to fall within these weight limits. Would hate to have to do it at airline check in and delay all the others waiting behind us. Coming from Pattaya to fly Air Asia to Phnom Penh and back, and even after all these years here, I can't think of anywhere in Pattaya to weigh our baggage before going to BKK.

    TIA

  7. Hi Kiwi Pete! Forgive my stupidity here. If you meet up at the "Magic Food Point", do you know if I could call my driver who is waiting in the parking lot someplace to drive down there to the ground level to pick us up? Just asking since I've never been down there and don't know if the driver is allowed to stop at the ground level which is normally just for buses isn't it?

Another question which is WAY off topic. Any of you guys know somewhere in the airport that you can use scales to weigh your baggage BEFORE getting to the airline check in counters? 8. When I completely modified a Suzuki 1988 model Caribbean, I took the entire drive train out of a 2000 year Vitara. Now I have 1600cc fuel injected engine, auto trans, power steering, power brakes, air con, and still kept the original lock out 4 wheel drive hubs. I also extended the body a foot in length, increased the cab height about 5 inches, and modified the hood (bonnet) so that the larger engine had more room on top. I also put 3/8 inch steel rails all around the sides and made 5/8 inch steel front and rear bumpers (great as a motorcycle repellent)! :o I made a front grill to look like a Jeep Cherokee.

Then I put captains chairs in the front, and made 2 smaller captain chair seats in the rear which I take out easily with wing nuts. Fully upholstered the entire inside, carpeted it, made big side windows in the rear, and made the tailgate one piece that swings out to the side, and mounted the spare on it. Then put large off road wheels and mags on it, and even included a trailor hitch. Then put 5 coats of metal flake paint on it and away we went. In the 6 years I've had it on the road I think I have only driven it about 25,000 km's, but have only been passed 12 times at speed when I was pedal to the metal. All but 2 times were between Korat and Ban Pi and it was pick ups that passed me these times, except for one Mercedes and a big Volvo. The engine is plenty large enough, and the auto trans and differential is geared well for climbing hills. The road up the mountains from Chiang Rai to that old Chinese KMT settlement (forget the name) was a piece of cake. Only problem I have is I could never get the speedometer to accurately reflect the speed or the odometer to record proper mileage due to the different wheel size and/or the drive train difference.

I am now planning on building another vehicle and could probably be talked in to selling the Suzuki since I have no where to park it right now in Pattaya and it needs to be parked on a busy street and keeps getting banged into by motorcycles. Doesn't hurt the Suzuki, but does scratch the paint. I am thinking on letting it go for around 160 K Baht. Anyone interested PM me here in Pattaya and I can send you more contact info and some pictures.

  9. Hi guys. I have been searching everything I know of to try to find a venue for one of the SEA games sports. Does anyone happen to have any idea where I can find:

Lawn Bowls Green, Queen Sirikit Sports Center, Pathum Thani in Bangkok? :o

I think it is so new that it is not on any maps I can find. If you may know where it is, then would you also have any recommendations for a hotel in that area? Or else, do you know if it would be fairly easy to get to by train, bus, or taxi from BKK lower Sukhumvit area? Or maybe if I stayed at any recommended hotel in the area of the old Don Muang airport, because as near as I can tell the stadium is located somewhere north of the airport?

    TIA :D

  10. Any shops in Pattaya selling full helmets? Or for that matter, any "good" helmets at all? I've been watching the Mityon dealer selection at the corner of 3d Road and S. Pattya Road for quite a while, and anytime I DO see something that "looks" like it could be a fairly good model, they are always too small for my head. My head doesn't look like OJ Simpson's head, I think it is quite normal size. I think it used to be around a 7 1/4 hat size?

For whatever it's worth, I contacted American Citizen Services at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok for their comment on the recently established practice of Pattaya Immigration requiring a copy of the front and back of a valid Credit Card when a Retiree renews a Retirement Visa.

My concern is that divulging this information lays the person open to possible Identity Theft and Credit Card Fraud, since various employees, non-employees, family members, couriers, etc. could gain access to this data and use it for nefarious purposes.

If my understanding of the reports that I've read & heard about this practice from people who have been through it so far at Pattaya Immigration is correct, it does not mesh with the story that Pattaya Immigration gave to Bangkok-ACS. I have indicated what I believe to be the suspicious information.

The response from Bangkok-ACS appears below.

    Date: Thu, 08 Nov 2007 15:32:33 +0700

    From: Bangkok ACS

Subject: RE: New Questionable Immigration Practice

    Sir,

We have contacted the Thai Immigration Bureau head office on Soi Suan Plu, where an immigration officer informed us that her office does not require retirees to submit a copy of their credit card. Applicants will need to show a bank statement or a bank book for an account that contains funds that suffice according to their regulations.

Pattaya Immigration informed us that they will ask for a copy of a credit card only for a case in which the applicant cannot provide a bank statement showing monthly income or a bank book that has enough funds. In this case, the applicant can give a copy of a credit card as a proof of their financial status. The officer suggested that the applicant should cross off any information that they think is crucial for fraud protection, i.e. 3 security digits and signature at the back of the card.

Therefore, retirement visa applicants should prepare their bank statement before going to renew their visa. If they can't, they should cross off important information on the copy of their credit card. Another alternative is to come to Bangkok to renew the retirement visa.

    Regards,

    American Citizen Services

  12. I need to take Omeprazole for how long to give my throat time to heal properly under choice 1, having done it for 3 weeks before and understanding that 1 month is the maximum time to take Omeprazole?

I have been prescribed Omeprazole for almost 4 years now! One daily in the morning. I have looked all over the internet on the medical sites and drug info sites, and couldn't find any that specifically set exact time limits on how long it can be taken for. Many suggestions for different symptoms, but can't remember any being more than about 6 months?

I had very bad acid problems ever since around 1966 (my time in Vietnam with the Marine Corps) and also developed symptoms of GERD about 15 or 20 years ago. I was eating about 20-25 antacid tablets a day all those years, combined with liquid antacids. Ever since I've been taking Omeprazole, I have had very little problem at all with the acid problem.

I have asked 9 doctors here in Thailand and the Philippines about maximum time to take Omeprazole, and none of them seem distressed that I have been taking it for such a long time, and keep prescribing it. I have tried to stop taking it off and on, but after one day or max 2 days, I have to start taking them all over again.

I've seen it mentioned quite often in this thread about the maximum time to take the medication. All being less than 6 months. I hope Sheryl or some Medico's out there may be able to set me straight about any long term adverse affects of taking the medication long term? And if there is an absolute maximum safe period to take it, then alternatives? :o TIA

  13. Your memory is much different than mine. The story originated with a poster making a quote of a Pattaya news report that was sourced to Mr. Kenyon in my recollection. This was later reported to be on hold with another Pattaya news report sourced again to Mr. Kenyon.

The Sunbelt news reports were a totally different subject.

Thanks lopburi3. I know my memory is fading year upon year, but I didn't think I was in total darkness and clueless yet! Sure looks like they had "gavstah" jumping through hoops on the 26th doesn't it?

Now, where did I leave my glasses? :o

  14. If I remember correctly, Barry Kenyon (Brit hon consul) is the same guy who, a few months ago, released the supposed regulation that the people who were applying for the 1 yr retirement extension based on monthly income, had to get their embassy affidavit's certified by MFA isn't he? That proved to be wrong. I'm sure that Mr. Kenyon would not knowingly release false information, so I would like to know where he is getting his information? What is the source? :o

Perhaps someone knows him and could call and check where this info came from this time for us please? Or I hear that he can be found at the Meesen Restaurant, 1st on the left as you enter the Pattaya Immigration car-park (Jomtien Beach, soi 5), between 0900 and 0930 Monday to Friday, except Immigration holidays. That info comes from the Pattaya Expats Club newsletter http://www.pattayaexpatsclub.com. So if anyone is going to Pattaya Immigration next week could stop by and maybe ask him for us and post his response here please? :D

I sure hope that the info did NOT come from anyone credible in immigration and is just possibly heresay! Hope, Hope, Hope. :D

Edit: I see that I type slower than Maestro and was beaten to the punch. Funny how great minds think alike! What? :D

  15. What will they want next? Our kidneys?

Another good business idea: sell KY and vaseline outside the immigration offices to hopeful applicants looking to ease the pain.

Good one Jingthing. I might suggest you mix some alum in with it for us old guys to tighten us up a bit! :o Anything to make it more enjoyable for our great Thai civil servants. :D

Believe it or don't, I actually did that at a bar I owned about 20 years ago on Soi Pattayaland 2. Put a table out front with KY tubes on it and a sign that said "alum added for the old farts and katoeys". My girls actually sold out the tubes in 3 days. Location, location, location I guess?

  16. Sorry, don't know if this should be posted here or in the "Pattaya" forum, but here goes.

I just received this notice in the Pattaya City Expats Club Newsletter - Oct. 21 to Oct 28, 2007:

NEW VISA RULES CHANGES - Pattaya Immigration bureau has introduced the following rules regarding one year Visa’s and extensions of Visa’s.

Applicants for one year retirement visas must now show and make copies of the back and front of any currently valid ATM or credit card issued in their name. The copies must be signed by the applicant. It does not matter whether the card was issued in Thailand or overseas. This is intended as a further check on an applicant's financial health.

Applicants for extensions on short visas, for example a request for the maximum allowed 7 days on a “Visa on Arrival” or for the maximum 30 days on a “60 day Tourist Visa” issued abroad, must now show proof of their onward travel plans after the extension has expired, by having in their possession an air or electronic airline ticket, or a bus ticket with clear dates printed on it. This requirement is to assure Immigration that the visa holder does indeed plan to leave Thailand at the expiration of his extension. This information is also on the PCEC website at http://www.pattayacityexpatsclub.com/modul...le&sid=1039

My comment on Thursday experience at Jomtien:

I went to renew my retirement extension yesterday at Jomtien (Thursday). I used the money in bank rule again (800K) and not the monthly income rule. I was not asked to show any credit cards which are the only way I bring money into Thailand, nor any credit card receipts. Which is probably a good thing, because I don't know about you guys, but doesn't something look really shaky about the above statement about making copies of your credit cards? :D What could be easier than this for someone to use that information to commit credit card fraud and identity fraud? :o I also had my money in a "Joint Account" and was asked for a copy of my marriage certificate to prove who the other name was on my "joint account". I was worried about the joint account being questioned since this is the first time I ever used the joint account at immigration, and thought they may require me to have double the money in the account with my Thai wife. They didn't THIS time luckily, since I wanted to use that account as emergency funds in case I get thrown in the hospital or jail. My circumstances may be different than some since I MAY have some sort of "grandfathering" in effect since I've been here for 38 years now, but if these requirements listed above are legitimate for credit card/ATM card copies, then I can REALLY see big problems. I don't see any way I would ever give copies of my credit cards (front AND back) to ANYONE, let alone our ever friendly immigration offices!

  17. I came across this last year in Korat, it is not you that has to report to the Immigration it is the owner of the property where you stay.

So in a nut shell if you enter the country and stay at a private address the registered owner of that property has to report to the Immigration or local police within 24 hours to tell them a farang is living there, failure to do so will result in a fine between 800 and 1600 baht.

This law has been in place for many years and owners of hotels etc have to report every time a foreigner stays at there hotel which is why you have to fill in card with passport and immigration card details.

So, do you guys know if this also applies to us guys whose spouses own the house we live in? I never went out of Thailand for 33 years, but finally did a few years ago to go with the Thai National Lawn Bowls team to challenge the Philippines team. I like to keep my record clean and would like to know if it applies to my own house where I live? :o Does my wife have to report me returning? TIA

  18. I haven't been paying much attention to the boards lately and I probably missed the answer to the following: Do they still withhold 30% when you transfer in more than $20,000? TIA

Edit reason: transfer funds in just for the heck of it, not to be used for condo purchase etc.

  19. As far as I know there is no such thing, you should get a business visa (USD 25) which can be extended indefinitely.

Do you get the business visa when you enter Cambodia (airport or via road); at the embassy in BKK; or online through their website? TIA

reason for edit: I forgot to ask, how long is the business visa good for (both before you enter Cambodia if obtained at the embassy or however you get it, and also after you are in Cambodia)? What does it cost to renew it?

I don't really plan on going to live for any long period of time in Cambodia, just would like to have this as an option in case things go pear shaped in Thailand for some reason. Sounds like it COULD be a good "back up"?

  20. quote name='PaulAllen' date='2007-09-20 14:28:49' post='1547111']

I have those fast black little ants in my house (kitchen mainly). In America we call them sugar ants. How the heck do I get rid of them? I don't want to spray my house with a spray (especially the kitchen) as this seems it will only kill the current ones in the house and do nothing for where they nest, wherever that is.

Anyway, how do all you old timers of Samui handle it?

    Thanks in advance.

    PA

Well Paul, I'm not from Samui, but my friend from Chiang Rai sent me this .jpg and I've been using it for a few years now in Pattaya and it works great. Just put a little bit along where they are marching and after they march through it, the next day gone! Mot Lao! Hope I can figure out how to put this .jpg on here?

What speed is your connection and what channel did you find the  game on sopcast? I like the idea of watching the games from my desk now that True has not negotiated a deal for us to watch via regular TV.

I too would like to know the speed which you guys are watching the sopcast or TVU broadcasts on? I have TOT adsl which I think is only 512 (about 800 baht a month here in Pattaya). I have tried watching the Broncos games the last 2 weeks on the TVU broadcast, but it is mainly just a bunch of digital pixels scrambled about and once in a while a regular picture of the game in progress. Using that, I at least could keep up a little bit with the score and sometimes even about 5 seconds of a play. I'm just wondering if I can do better than that? Do I need to upgrade my adsl connection or change to True or what? I haven't tried the sopcast. Is it better than TVU? Sorry for so many questions. TIA
