  1. Apparently The Yellow shirts are backed by these powerful families. It does amaze me how the wealth in Thailand is shared by so few. A lot of the Thai- Chinese own most of the big companies and industries and are happy with the way things are. They worked hard to get where they are and are intent in maintaining their privileged positions. This goes all the way to the top. These people do not want any equal distribution of wealth or power and do not want any educated people to come through to challenge their firm grip. Think 1976. Think all the people who have been cast out for writing or saying anything challenging the Status Quo.

  2. I think that you could maybe write a guide, or overview of the problems that one can face in Thailand e.g. Yaabaa, corruption, sex industry, touts etc. However it would be very very difficult to give a real account of exactly what the dark side of Thailand is all about. I worked with a Thai lawyer for a while. Learned a little about how the system works, how different crimes are perceived, how to avoid going to prison etc. There is so much that we, as foreigners, never get to witness or experience.

Writing about this would also prove very contentious. It would be seen by many within the Thai establishment as biased and interfering.

    However best of luck.

  3. When I was a kid I got scammed while working the register . I don't think i've ever been taken for a long con, though.

Same here, classic con where they give you a large note for a small item, then as you ring in through they suddenly have the correct money, you give change back then they give you the correct money and change and before you know it. They've talked you into giving them extra change without you realising.

    I didn't get that.

  4. Giving straight answers to the initial post.

    1. Yes, I have done it.

    2. Very hard work.

    3. No regrets.

If you know what you are doing and you keep doing it for 10 years you should do well.

For those interested, there is a partnership option available with the Walen school now so those interested are welcome to contact me. It will be worth your time. Much easier option than starting your own school.

Hi Mac. I think that the Callan Method works and that Walen has done a great job in establishing itself as both an educational and business enterprise in Thailand. However I know that it is a hard slog to get established.

  5. Moonraker,

    You are absolutely correct.

"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful". ~Seneca the Younger

"I still say a church steeple with a lightning rod on top shows a lack of confidence". ~Doug McLeod

Some people will fall for anything, a lot more will kneel for nothing.

Religion is is an abuse of people's fears, an opiate for the masses.as Mark Twain once wisely said (or was that wrote).

  6. Thank you for all the posts so far.

To clear matters up, I have just finished a 5 year period of teaching in a primary school in Thailand. So I guess that I have some experience in this field in Thailand. Although I loved my time doing this, I knew that if I was to make this a career I would have to get further qualifications.e.g. PGCE, Certified teacher status. I have come back to the U.K to do just that.

However I want to keep my options open, so I have had a look at other Uni. courses at postgrad level. Just wondering has anyone had any luck working in any other sectors in LOS and if so, what kind of qualifications would be appropriate for that field. e.g. I have a friend who is starting a degree in accounting with the aim to get a job in financial services with an international company in Bangkok.

  7. I am back in the U.K seriously considering studying for a post grad degree. I have been looking into teaching degrees, however was advised by a close colleague to consider doing a business/finance related degree. The idea being that this would enable me to attain a higher paying job on returning to Thailand (I want to move there once finished with University back home). Would this be the case? And if so what kind of degrees would enable me to do this? Are there good financial sector jobs in Thailand for foreigners?

Are any members of this forum doing such? Or, if you guys don't mind, what are you all doing?

  8. thanks guys, i really don't know what to do now! i did this TEFL course because i loved Asia so much and thought it was a chance to stay there longer, but i was not informed about the degree thing!feel i little stupid now!

if anyone out there can help me out, i will be extremely grateful.

    Regards Kevin

Hi Kevin. I know of just the agency for you. I worked for them for a few years. Most of their teachers had degrees but some didn't. They offer a pretty good package if you are placed in the right school.

    PM if you are interested.

  9. Will it get you a teaching job in Thailand?

Teaching what exactly? I have had a good look at the course structure and it is very 'general' in nature.

I have nothing but praise for the Leicester Uni as I did my online MA in TESOL and Applied Linguistics with them.

The MA in International Education may be ok for those looking at management positions but not, I suspect, for a teaching role. I think that many internationals would want something more relevant to actual teaching.

    Only my opinion of course.

Thats kind of what I was thinking about he course.

I am also considering applying for the MA Tesol and Applied Languages with Uni. Of Leicester as well. I can do it at Leisester for 1 year full-time. However are there many job openings for such a degree in Thailand. And what would they be?

The Hammers at the Emirates this weekend.

  10. Hi All,

I am looking into possible degrees of study to work in International schools in Thailand. Having already applied for a PGCE in England (waiting for interview), I want to have a look at other viable education qualifications. I came across this MA International Education from Uni. of Leicester. Anyon eany knowledge of this? Would it gte me a teaching job in a Thai International School?

Any help would be highly appreciated as I am planning on teaching in Thailand as a very possible career. I have already taught for 4 years in other teaching capacities e.g. tefl, non -international schol. in LOS

  11. Hi All.

I am applying to Universuty in England this year. They required a CRB from Thailand as I worked in Thailand for 5 years previously between 2004 - 2009. I went to the a thai police station 2 months ago and handed in all the required docs. e.g. proof of address, passport with stamps etc. I brought my Thai gf with me as the thai police didn't seem to have a clue what I wanted.

Anyway I just received my CRB from thailand in the post. It is all in Thai. I don't even know if it is a proper CRB. I am now in the U.K. It is a white A4 size paper with a Garuda on the top soem thai writing and my name on it. Is this the correct CRB? I hope my thai gf hasn't just gone and messed this up as we are split up by now. Anyone with any experience of the CRB and what should it look like?

    Thanks.
