  1. The new Home Secretary, the Hon Theresa May had it spot on. "it is a privilege to come to the UK"rolleyes.gif

For me personally it is a privilege to leave the UK with its nanny state and unelected people in local and national governments telling me how I should live my life, what I can or cannot do and when.

I caught something on the BBC website in the last couple of days that some local governments want to fine residents if they throw out too much trash instead of fining manufacturers who over package the items they sell.

It is bad enough so my friends in the UK tell me having to pay council tax and now this on top?

Maybe it will change under the new government.

  2. There are a couple of ways to get to your messenger inbox:

    - If you have unread messages a link will appear in the black bar just under the menu, that says: "Messenger (x new)" - click that link and you will come to your messenger inbox.

    - Click the number in the black square just to the right of your name (also in the black bar just under the menu), it will bring out a popup that shows your latests notifications, if any of those notifications are about PMs there are links there as well.

    - And finally the easiest way that is always available: Click the down arrow just to the right of your name in the black bar under the menu. This will bring up a popup that has a link to your messenger.

I did that this morning and it showed my my PMs.

Unfortunately they were from 2004 and 2005 and not the ones I needed from last week.

There was a message saying that within the next 24 to 48 hours the PM service should be back to normal.

Why aren't the latest PMs loaded first?

  3. I can't find my messages or my assistant any more and also the view posts for today, yesterday and before seems to have disappeared.

I really don't want to wade through 1300 odd pages to look for daily posts.

So far I am not impressed with the new look but it may change with use.

It also looks as though the smileys have run away as well.

  4. I keep threatening about getting rid of mine and then my wife, son and friends all say no.

We all love it as it is a good looking bike (I agree with that), it's comfortable (and it fits my fat ass), it slogs on all day and it is really an OK bike.

What they actually don't do, other than my son who is 5 (with his own helmet), is they actually don't ride the dam_n thing so they have no idea what it is like.

To be honest I like it a lot too but I really really want something bigger that goes faster, looks more sexy, makes more noise and has more bells and whistles

    than my Phantom.

And then I think again that it really isn't THAT bad and I am too lazy to change it.

So I will keep it until the next urge hits me and go through it all again. :)

  5. I am sort of looking for a Steed or something a bit bigger/better than my Phantom but if I was offered a Steed for 55,000 baht with a green book I would be looking for the big rat that I could smell.

With respect to all you bikers that know more than me (about 85 or 90%) I wouldn't touch it with a 10 metre pole.

Personally, I'd still be interested if I wanted a Steed. If you are happy with the bike, I would just make a deal to go with the seller to ministry to transfer the name. If they have no problem with it, THEN you pay the seller. If its good enough for the gov't, its good enough for me.

Mostly Steeds WITH a green book go for 100,000 + baht so if someone is selling one cheaply then I would suspect that there are major problems in the offing.

Also for something like that I would go with the seller to the land transport department anyway before I pay because if there IS a problem it will not be my problem.

  6. Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI, Elizabeth II. All from memory, does that make me some form of geek?!

I agree that some of the questions seem irrelevant; but anyone with an ESOL entry level 3 or above standard of English should be able to study the material and pass. What is interesting is that native English speakers did well, whilst non native speakers didn't. Which indicates, to me at least, that it's not so much the questions that are at fault but that maybe too many people are attempting the test when their English isn't up to the task, and so they should be following the ESOL with citizenship course route instead.

Not a geek but Edward VIII was never king of England as he abdicated before the coronation thus propelling George VI into becoming king.

  7. dvpro

You were spot on, how did you suss it out so accurately???

If anyone goes there on a bike, make sure you alarm and chain your bike when parking it in this area.

    Bill.

The saddlebags were described on the website as measuring 20" x 12" x 8".

    Perfect, (for moi) I thought!

Not so, they are shaped like a one eighth slice of pizza, not rectangular, useless to me, but great for someone with high pipes.

They are a straight rip-off of the Cortech Sport saddlebags.

    post-53559-1275014704_thumb.jpg

The Motocy guy won't sell the saddlebags without the top bag either, so, it's take it or leave it for 4500bt.

I have a few Cordura sports bags which are bigger, nicer and cheaper........ @ A$8.00 ea. from a sale in Bankie.

The black, (only) display saddlebags had broken zippers, so, "buyer beware".

The Thai's concept of marketing, never ceases to amaze me!

Note: LivinginLOS has a set and seems quite happy with his purchase after 18 months

If you don't speak Thai, take a translator with you.

So, after 75 minutes in a taxi and a 300bt fare, I was a bit pissed off....

I wonder who makes saddlebags for the postman. :)

    Decals.

I saw the vinyl guy yesterday & we'll get on with samples next week now that BKK is returning to "normal" :D

    Cheers!

    Hi GD

    Thanks for the decals update.

I think I will give the bags a miss though

  8. I found the Bus Stop up Soi Nana on the right side does very good fish and chips.

(genuine cod? Yeah, Right) but it is well cooked to order and a reasonable price as well.

It is not a girly bar but a restaurant.

  9. A pork pie does me, with plain Walkers crisps, Colemans mustard, pickled onions, pickled egg and a pint of Brains dark or three or four, sod it I've started so I'll finish.

Sunny afternoons in pub gardens is what summer was made for.

brains! now theres a name i thought id never here on a thai forum.

    Brains Faggots. :D . :)

I though he meant Brains SA (skull attack).

A Welsh beer made from the purest waters of the river Taff in Cardiff.

    Also used as paint stripper.

  10. I had an old 3 way lighter adapter, cut the plug off after identifying positive and negative and used that wired across the live side of the fuse (after the ignition is turned on) and put it into my side pannier with an on/off switch and some double sided sticky tape.

When I use my GPS I just plug it into the socket and tape the cable down onto the frame and the tank and it works great plus I can use another socket to charge the mobile if need be.

  11. Many years ago I used to be in the military based in Norfolk and my local pub was the Ostrich at Weasenham St Peter.

They used to do a pork pie that was about a pound in weight (500 grams in old money) and they also sold Lakens Old Heavy beer. :D :D

A good strong dark beer and 4 was enough for me.

I could just go for one of their pies now but not the beer.

I was also careful not to play domionos with the old farm labourers for beer as I always lost. :)

  12. There is a site which I find useful for the exchange rates in general but it is not an actual bank rate at the time you draw on the ATM.

    http://bankexchangerates.daytodaydata.net/default.aspx

This was the rate I got yesterday from the Kbank in the village via their ATM and my LloydsTSB offshore account.

    TH 10150.00

    XR 45.051

    CD 5528 20MAY10

This was the rate shown by the Kbank.

    Kasikorn Bank Thailand 2010-05-19 01:21 1 GBP THB 45.7975

  13. Just a small snip from your post.

Years of silence and deaf ears are unleashed and 'Bob the builder' is now Thailands Guru within his very own cyber community ... he is the leading light, the path to righteousness, he is the way, he is 'da man' ... !

Have a look at my avatar (its been there a while).

I hope it it is not me you are talking about. :)

  14. cangetman ,

at least, you admit to your mistakes ,,

many farangs feel secure in thailand ,,

buy a house ,, which they can not own ..

    it,s like building a house on a swamp .

reasons , for coming to thailand ,,

simple ,, what brought most of us here ,,

    CHEAP SEX ...

As Toptuan succinctly put it (a snip from his original quote)

Incidentally, I resent the stereotypes suggested by the OP.

The OP made a presumption about westerners coming to Thailand for the women. I am sure many do. But tbh it is also quite droll to assume that about us.

Just as there are many men who enjoy the ramblings of a local tuk tuk driver along the lines of "you like Thai lady?", i also know many men who find it annoying. Not to mention the ones who are downright insulted by the idea that they are here for "cheap sex". Most of us enjoy intimate relationships, but not all of us feel its what defines us, or our sole reason for traveling somewhere. Some of us actually enjoy relationships as a part of our normal existence in this world, as part of a package of where we choose to live, but not as our ultimate reason or goal.

    I.m with you Eek.

I first came here back in 1993 to work for 3 months and then again in 1994 for another 3 months that ran into nearly 4 years.

At the end of that I divorced my UK wife and in 2000 married the girl I first met in 1993.

I came back again in 2001 for another 3 months work which ran into 16 months but by then we had moved to Thailand permanently.

I live up country and I get bored with tuk tuk drivers and other hustlers offering me Thai ladies and now I don't go to BKK that much as the few things I want are not Thai ladies but books to read and a decent curry now and again plus I get my meds there as well.
