Said on here previously that there will be food riots eventually with this lockdown and the money starts running out, I think my prediction will be wrong. there will be alcohol riots and then food riots - or maybe steal the food as an afterthought

Sort of: after they loot the booze stocks, the rioters will get the "end of p*ss up munchies"?

How about a proper study that actually shows if they work or not, instead of each country following their advice of their so called experts.

Perhaps the 'experts" - however you regard them - have rather more pressing calls on their time and expertise?

wearing a mask may or may not provide protection, either for the wearer or others nearby, but it certainly reassures people in this society. Irritating or not, we should fall in line and wear them.

I'm sure the drunk farang backpackers will party, and then soon all farangs forced to leave.

If there are drunk backpackers partying, then yes, they may well be thrown out, and deservedly so.

I am sure that the authorities, and the Thai people, will distinguish between them, and the rest of us. Of course there will be the usual xenophobic idiots on Facebook, like those two clowns pictured with the catapults the other day, but they really are as stupid as the drunk backpackers.

I am going to celebrate Songkran under my shower, bottle of beer in one hand, bottle of scotch in the other; and of course a sound blaster at max volume set up at a safe distance from the shower cell.

    Just like every year, really.

    You lucky, lucky b*st*rd!

You have enough water to run a shower where you live?

As an earlier poster mentioned - this ten days could very well be extended. In fact I think it is highly likely it will be. The ban on alcohol sales could last several months. Also it makes a mockery of the whole thing when alcohol can still be bought in Pattaya from 6.00 AM until 6.00 PM. Very strong anti-alcohol lobby here that would prefer the country abstained from alcohol permanently. More control over the population.

There is a very vocal anti alcohol lobby here - I'm not sure how strong it is.

The brewing/distilling industry is an important part of the business portfolios of some very wealthy and influential families. Whilst they may accept a temporary ban, to prevent or limit Sonkran parties they will not be happy with a long term indefinite ban. Such a ban would allow bootlegging to become established.

Bootlegging flourished in prohibition era USA despite a relatively efficient and effective law enforcement system. Does Thailand have a law enforcement system system which could control or prevent it? The influential ones will be mindful of the threat to their markets.

The very influential people at the centre of power will have been consulted. Theirs' are the views that matter.

So many posters upset the number of deaths and cases in Thailand are miniscule compared to the West.

    'It's the lack of testing'

'Just wait 2 weeks when all the workers have returned upcountry, then you'll see the exponential growth.'

Maybe the hot weather is a major inhibitor, which combined with the current clampdown on social contact and the space available upcountry, has led to the low numbers of infections anddeaths

Perhaps, as a few scientific studies are saying, the number of asymptomatic carriers is huge everywhere, then it could be that, on average, Thais have good antibodies.

Perhaps... I also suspect that many who fall ill, but not seriously so, are simply not seeking treatment, and thus not being recorded. A bit like the regular "seasonal flu" epidemics, self diagnose, a couple of days in bed with over the counter medication, get up when you get better.

Going back to a middle ages way of thinking, what next burn old ladies with cats!!!

Only if they float if you throw them in the village pond - come on, we must have some scientific way of determining whether or not they are witches.

Actually, with (Weather)'spoons closed, one wonders where these great minds can gather to carry out empirical debate and peer review

     on their theorums?

Is this just another example of doing something, but not actually doing anything, I mean, just how many people are out, and about, between 10pm and 4am, let's face it, bars are closed, night clubs closed, massage shops closed etc, these curfews seem ridiculous.

It has stopped the long distance bus system from operating. Thailand has a very comprehensive network of overnight bus routes. These are the mode of transport of choice (necessity) of most Thais. Stopping such travel is the main effect, and I suspect the main aim, of this curfew

I have 8 aircons, a fully equipped recording studio a fully functioning kitchen and 4 kids. Fridges and water-coolers and ovens and tvs etc etc  - it all adds a month

Golly, I only have ceiling/wall mounted fans in the three bedrooms (one never used) kitchen and living room, TV and fridge freezer. But, I have a teenage daughter. I ventured into her lair this morning and it was like standing under a Chinook Helicopter trying to lift a heavy underslung load - ceiling fan and floor fan going full blast, plus a separate desk fan for Snowball and Cookie the Chihuahuas!

With that it varies between B750 and B940 a month.

10pm to 4am - who is it going to affect? People out drinking late in bars and restaurants that are already forced closed? Or nightclubs that also are not open?

I am not quite sure what this does to help really unless it is just an attempt to make poltiical mileage out of the situation.

Around where I am the Thais do not seem to understand that they should not stand close to each other and of course take offence if you try to move away as they approach coughing.

A lot more education needed on what to do and if they want a curfew then make it early evening until early morning 6pm until 2am would make better sense off the top of my head. People would not be able to go out to socialise in the evening and so hopefully say at home rather than party mindlessly partying together. People who run the markets for food and delivery vehicles could keep the country fed and supplied.

Of course I realise I am not Thai and so my ideas area ll meaningless and stupid anyway!

It will dramatically reduce long distance travel - virtually no domestic flights now, and the long distance buses almost all run overnight,

I rather suspect that is the aim.
