Can you open an account there without actually being there? When I opened my New Zealand account I had to go there to open it. Also when I wanted to add my husband to the account he had to go there to have his name added.

From past experience you also should check what charges the bank tacks on when accepting a foreign money check. When we were in the US the banks there charged an arm and a leg in fees.
