  1. When I got my one year license I got my letter from the local police station. I do remember it was a bit of a hassle and rather expensive. We had to have our house papers and also a local thai (manager) vouch for us. We got our license with no problem.

When we went for our five year license we went the immigration route for a letter in Hua hin. At that time it was no problem and the also registered us as living at our current address. But that was 6 months ago and also at the Hua Hin Immigration office.

Once again it depends where you are and who you are talking to at the time.

    :)

  2. My husband and are both retired. We are originally from the USA but have not lived there since 1982. We traveled extensively for about 10 years and then settled in Australia for about 12 years. We have now lived in Thailand for 3 years and are quite happy here. We plan on making this our final home, but then you never know what may happen in the future.

  3. My husband and I (both foreigners) need to make a will that will cover our assets here in Thailand. Can anyone recommend an attorney either in the Bangkok or Hua Hin/Cha Am area. If you have had a will made what was your experience and what was the approx. cost.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. :)

  4. You shouldn't have any problems. My husband bought a Toshiba laptop in the States and uses it here without any problems. You won't even need an adaptor as the plugs are the same as in the US. You are correct that the power is 220 and anything you plug in would need to state that it is compatble with it.

  5. My husband and I are American and planning on visiting the US later this year. We have not lived in the US for many years and he only has a valid Thai driver's license. Have any of you obtained an International Drivers License while here in Thailand. If so what did you have to do to get it. Is it recognized as a valid license overseas.

With the way Thai's drive it is a bit scarey to think that they can obtain a permit to drive in countries that enforce the driving code.

  6. Orang37, It is my understanding you do not submit your application locally but mail it all to Manila.

Unfortunately the 2 times we have had to deal with them it was not an efficient process. First time was when we were living in Australia and wanted to have our checks direct deposited into our Australian bank account. It took about 3 months before they finally got around to doing it and that was with intervention from the US consulate in Sydney.

The second time was when we changed our address to Thailand. My husbands address was changed within a matter of weeks, but my address was still not changed after 3 months. We went into the US consulate in Bangkok and they sent a follow up letter and within a few weeks they had changed my address.

Unfortunately you cannot do it over the net when you live out of the United States.

Good luck and hope everything goes well for you.

  7. In January when my husband and I went to immigration for our letter of address to renew our 5year driving license, they automatically did our TM30. As we own our condo we had our Chanote with us and did not need to bring anyone with us. I have to say that Hua Hin immigration has always been very good to work with. They look to see when our passport and visas are are about to expire and remind us to be sure to renew them.

  8. I'm in Hua Hin and our outages have been going on for the past week. Still a problem the morning. We seem to lose connection about every hour for 5 minutes or more. Can't do any meaninful work on the net for fear of losing the connection.

  9. I had a face lift by Dr Poomee 5 years ago. I had implants removed in Australia 4 years ago and the Dr there was reluctant to do a breast lift. I came back to Thailand and Dr Poomee did my breast lift and it turned out perfect.

I also have a friend that had a face lift last March by Dr Poomee and she is looking great now.

I highly recommend him, but be sure to ask all the questions as he will be very good about answering them for you. He also will show you before and after photos when you are in his office.

Best of luck when you make your decision.

  10. About 1 1/2 years ago we were looking for a left hand swing refrigerator. We did finally find a couple at Index in Hua Hin. They were much too small and expensive for what we wanted. At the moment I can not remember the brand or the price. When we asked about the ability to change the door swing most sales persons just looked at us confused.

Had a similar problem when we were looking for a washing machine that had hot and cold water inlets. No such thing available here that we could find. I bought one that only had the one inlet and hooked up my on demand hot water to it. The problem is it was not designed for hot water and I think it is ruining the gaskets. Am finding pieces of brown waxy cardboard in the machine after washing a load.

Good luck on your search for your refrigerator.

  11. I want to plant some screening plants at my Phuket hotel. The plant that I'm after is a palm (I think), and it has leaves that fan out just like a peacock's feathers. The leaves can be coaxed into growing in a single plane (ie as opposed to a bushy plant). They are often seen in hotel gardens to create a screen and attractive feature.

Does anyone know the proper name of this plant and advise about what soil they like, how fast they grow etc?

    Thanks

    Simon

    Hi Simon

The palm you are talking about is the travellers palm and is the iconic symbol of the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. It is also known as the East - West palm as it is said to orientate itself automatically in an E-W direction.

I believe it is a member of the banana family so grows fairly quickly, but a search of web will confirm.

    TBWG :o

There are actually 2 plants that are very similar. One is the Traveler Palm (which is not actually a palm) that has already been mentioned. The other is the Strelitzia Nicolai (Bird of Paradise Tree) Not to be confused with the Strelitzia Reginae (bird of paradise plant) The Bird of Paradise Tree has a bloom similar to the plant, but it is white and blue rather than the vibrant orange.

  12. I had the same problem with add-ons being disabled and couldn't get signed into Instant Messenger among other things. Spent half the day messing around and finally everything seems to be back in order. Never really sure though. I did start to download the updates but then canceled it when they said I needed to backup my whole system first. I had also ran my Avast AntiVirus scan at about the same time and found a couple virus. So I thought that might have caused the problem.

Another strange thing I have noticed is that recently the time showing for post being made is an hour ahead of what the actual time is. This seems to come and go during the day.

  13. One thing to consider--A will can be changed at any time. So even if he has a will and it is translated into Thai, if he changes his mind in favor of the girlfriend, he can just re-write the will to benefit her. The only safe way to protect property is to have the condo in your name alone and then to have the chanote in a safe place that he cannot access.

I am not familiar with UK law, but I believe it would be possible for him to leave part of his UK assets to someone in Thailand if he so desires. They would not have to be married-it would just have to be his assets.

  14. He was pronounced dead at 6:00am. That means he must have fallen sometime before that. I don't think you can call that sleeping in. There are so many variations on what may have happened to speculate on who is to blame.

We rented a very nice condo and discovered that none of the sliding glass doors in the entire building would lock. They just did not fit properly.

My sympathy goes out to the parents.

  15. I did a quick search and could not find what I was looking for. From what I remember it is very important that you not only sign the birth certificate but you must also sign the forms when registering the birth.

Also several stated that it is best to obtain a Thai passport before your Norwegian passport.

You should also be aware if the baby is a boy, he will be liable for Thai military service.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge then me will add to this post.

In the meantime try a search in Thai Visa and see if you can find any relevant threads.

Congratulations on the upcoming birth :o
