  1. Thank god I just found a copy I made before I handed it in (I knew it was a sensible thing to do at the time!).

What about the residency certificate? Obviously I have not applied for residency here but I assume it is a certificate given out by the British embassy stating your semi-permanent address or something along those lines? Is it necessary?

I remember when applying for the registration of my motorbike they asked for a residency certificate but it wasn't as easy to obtain as they thought, so luckily I got by without one and used the WP, employment contract and copies of house rental agreement instead...

  2. Hi, I have been asked to provide a police clearance certificate for my new job which will be starting in a few months (previous job didn't require one). I have been living in Thailand for 3 years now and finished work in October, and will be starting a new job hopefully in May (I do not have a current work permit, obviously). I am from the UK.

Do I obtain a certificate from here in Bangkok or should I attempt to obtain one from the UK?

If I need one from the UK, where exactly can I get the form as I have been searching and there isn't any clear information on the subject, here or on the Met Police website?

I have a friend who told me that he obtained one from the UK but it took him 2 months and cost £50 or something like that, but he was living in the UK at the time.

If I just need a cert. from here I take it the process will be much quicker (and cheaper) and I can get the cert. from the Royal Thai Police Headquaters?

Thanks in advance and I do apologise for starting a new thread on such a common topic.

  3. From Wikipedia, for those that can't be bothered to look.

"The company was co-founded by Dietrich Mateschitz, an Austrian entrepreneur who had the idea to introduce the drink to, and market it in Europe. Mateschitz was international marketing director for Blendax, a German toothpaste company, when he visited Thailand in 1982 and discovered that Krating Daeng (literally "red bull"), a Thai energy drink, helped to cure his jet lag.[2] Between 1984 and 1987, Mateschitz worked with TC Pharmaceutical (a Blendax licensee) to adapt Krating Daeng for European consumers. At the same time Mateschitz and Chaleo Yoovidhya, the owner of Krating Daeng, founded Red Bull GmbH; each investing $500,000 of savings and taking a 49% stake in the new company. They gave the remaining 2% to Chaleo's son Chalerm, but it was agreed that Mateschitz would run the company.[3] That left the Thais as silent partners. Red Bull GmbH launched the “Austrian” version of Red Bull in 1987, which is carbonated and not as sweet as the original Thai recipe. It is the Austrian formula that has taken almost half of the U.S. market for energy drinks, and up to 80% of the market in some other countries.

In 2006, Forbes Magazine listed Chaleo as being the 292nd richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of over $2.5 billion[4] while Mateschitz was listed at number 317.

As for the news story, well, must be a slow news day as this is complete rubbish. As others have said, som nam naa, pot and kettle..blah blah blah.

  4. Thanks for the replies but as I stated before, I already tried DKtoday and have looked online; I was asking for bookshops.

Just for future info, I bought some books from a shop in Siam Paragon on the 4th floor. The shop is called Kinokuniya Books and has got books covering a huge number of subjects, plus there are books for all price ranges, so definately recommend.

  5. I have just been given the task of teaching critical reading and creative writing. Now whereas for the latter I have a few ideas already, and the former, again, a few ideas; I would like to buy a few books to make it easier for myself and my students to understand.

I have had a look on the dktoday website and there is nothing on critical reading or creative writing, specifically.

So what I am asking is, I want to take a day to visit Bangkok to go to DK and hopefully other places to buy a few books. But other than Chatuchak (which I really dont know very well anyway), and DK, where else could I find teaching materials in Bkk? Are there any shops in or around MBK, Siam or other malls?

The students are M6 and they are not too bad, but I predict that I am going to have trouble explaining critical reading and generating discussion. Obviously it would be great if someone could suggest a particular book or series that would help.

    Thanks

  6. Finally fixed my intermittant internet problem.

To be fair to 3BB, it turned out to be because of a cheap line that was fitted when the house was built 3 years ago. The line corroded and fractured, therefore trimming the line and re-connecting the 2 wires helped only in the very short term.

I had to go to the main office and talk to the technitions, who followed me to my house and fitted a new wire, led it through the house and re-positioned the socket upstairs. Now no problems at all; a faster upload speed and higher noise margin (around 38db, pretty good tbh).

So finally got some intelligent technitions and the problem is sorted, it did cost me 500B for the pleasure though.

Oh and I can confirm that I have now got a 3.5MB/1MB Premier connection. Although it isn't advertised anymore, thats what I signed up for before, and so that's what I have now. If I change to an 8MB Indy connection, I will lose priority, and international web surfing/gaming will suffer (I know it sounds obvious, but I wasn't sure exactly what I had after the packages changed).

So advice to all, if you have intermittant problems, expect the cheap lines that were fitted to your house to be the problem and your first port of call.

  7. Interesting that it says my provider is Maxnet and yours is 3BB. Obviously either I need to sign up to a new package or they haven't updates all the servers or something...

Bangkockney: I take it that is the 15MB Indy package?

Not sure on the name, would have to get the Mrs to dig out the paperwork.

What I do know is it is not the out-of-Thailand package. It's 16MB, normal flavour.

Sorry for being so vague lol!

lol it's cool, it must be the indy package then. It's either that or you are paying 2500 per month for the premier and getting great speeds out of it!

  8. I expect that the local exchange servers are not waterproofed.

With regards to satellite TV, that is a known problem with any satellite system.

FAO the people with high d/load upload speeds. Do you participat in internet gaming on PC, PS3 or Xbox?

If so, what kind of pings do you get?

Can you post a speed test from servers in the UK please.

    My bangkok server speed test:

    Canterbury, UK speed test:

    989810779.png

    San Francisco:

    989815915.png

  9. I know. I am only reporting what he said to me. I live in Chachoengsao and I don't know what the technitions are like in bkk but here they don't speak English and don't seem to know a lot. I would actually say that I knew more about it than he did.

My modem is not the standard one btw, I have a Netgear wireless G. It is not the same IP.

I heard him call somebody at the main branch here and he mentioned upgrading it to 3MB and within seconds he did a speed test and that was it, 3MB premier he said. Maybe they don't have the technology yet here to offer the 5MB premier connection?

If you change the package, i.e from Indy to Premier, then you will get a new username and password, but if you just change connection speed then you can use the same password that you used before.

  10. When I first got here 3 years ago (Chachoengsao), I got the 590B indy package. It was ok for cheap surfing, crap for video streaming and ok for dloading.

Then, when I got my PS3 I wanted to do some online gaming, the 590 indy package wasn't up to the job. That is when you need the premier package, as it gives you a higher priority at the local hub/bus things. So for online gaming, the 1000(ish) premier package helped A LOT. I mean, I still had high pings when connected to or playing against European or Americal servers/gamers, but it wasn't so bad, just had to learn to shoot faster.

Just as a side note, the 3BB technitions that I have had come to my house to help me with dodgy connections in the past have been varied in abilities.

The most recent have been real idiots with what seems like no electrican training whatsoever.

    An example:

Dodgy connection, I suggest a cable fault as the router seems fine, he leaves, comes back a few minutes later and takes apart the connection just outside my house. He reconnects it, twisting the wires together. It works, at least till he leaves. I go and buy a chocolate box connection to make a more permanent solution, and voila, I have constant internet.

2 weeks later, guy comes round to say that they are changing the cables throughout my street and specifically to my house as I have a premier connection (taken with a pinch of salt), ok, they fit the new wire, and again just twist the cables together outside my house and within 2 days connection has dropped (they had taken the chocolate box i used to sort out the connection off and thrown it away, I had to go and buy a set of crimps so that they think twice next time...

Though right now, 3 months on, I have a dodgy connection again, 2 mins on, 2 mins off. 1530 currently no help, we will see. I find their customer service completely random, it has been good in the past and also occasionally, very bad also...

    I have questions also though...

So like I said, I now have the 2MBit Premier package for around 1100 per month.

However, now the packages have changed and the premier is now 2,500, what package am I on now? Do I still have priority over indy customers? Why hasn't my 2MBit line been upgraded in line with all new customers?

If I change to an 8MB Indy, will I still have a decent priority connection over the 600B 5MB line users? How good is it for online gaming etc.?

  11. You can not apply early for the 7 days as it is actually not going to be approved but they allow 7 days in that case. So on October 31 you take letter from firm to immigration saying your employment has ended and they cancel your extension of stay and you fill out a TM.7 normal extension of stay request for 7 days to get your things in order at a cost of photo and 1,900 baht. If you are ready to leave you can just do that and apply for the tourist visa. Before the 60 expire (do a few days early) you use the same TM.7/1,900 baht.

    Thank you for your help

  12. Thanks for the replies.

I first obtained my visa on the 6th December 2007 and it has been extended every year but I have to go to do 90 day checks. I guess that is an extension of stay.

My contract will end on the 31st October, can I apply for a 7 day extension now?

Do you have any idea how much it will cost?

With regards to the tourist visa, how do I apply for an extension of stay? I guess I just go to immigration with the correct forms?

  13. I am a 28 year old British citizen currently teaching at a uni on a non-imm B visa and WP.

I have just been told that my contract will not be renewed for next term and my current contract will end on the 31st October.

What I would like to know is, what do I do now? What should I do with the WP and visa?

I guess the WP gets submitted back to the labour dept. and the visa is nullified after 5 days?

My other question was... If I wanted to stay here without working for the next 8 months (possible job offer coming in March next year), what visa can I get? And where/how?

Obviously, from what I have read, a non-imm O visa would be good just in case I cannot get work, but obviously I live in Thailand right now and it would be very expensive to go back to the UK just to obtain a year visa and I gather that Hull and Perth are the only places to get these 'visiting friends' visas. Are there any other options available to me?

  14. Although I also played a lot of C64 and Amiga games like Civilization and Geoff Hammond's Grand Prix and GTA 1 , the first games that really amazed and enthralled me were GTA 3, Gran Turismo 1, Half Life (+Counterstrike), Command & Conquer and Need For Speed 1.

Though within the last 5 years I would also give praise to games such as Modern Warfare, Battlefield 2, and the latest GTA. All of which have further pushed the boundaries with respect to the whole package of features every good game should encompass.

There are definately a few others that I can't think of right now though

If there had to be a number 1, it would be Gran Turismo though B)

  15. Hi,

I am working as a teacher on a non-imm B, single entry visa, which I acquired in October 2009. I want to go to Cambodia this weekend for a few days. What do I need to do in order to come back without having to apply for a new visa? Do I need a re-entry permit?

If I do need a re-entry permit, is there a form online that I can download?

How much would it cost me?

I live in Chachoengsao so I guess I can't apply over the internet.

    Thanks in advance!

  16. Funny how on here people like to give the offender the 'benefit of the doubt' in such a despicable case of assault. But in their own countries, everybody jumps on the hatred bandwagon.

Don't always be quick to blame the children or father. None of you know the facts. That works both ways too.

As many people have said already, it is common for charges for these types of crimes to come a long time after the crime was committed, in all countries of the world. With children of such a young age, they may have decided not to tell anyone of the incidents. On the other hand, it could have been fabricated by the father. I certainly do not trust any police here to do anything without some corruption involved down the line, so the chances of normal Thais of behaving in a way that they are aware of their own morals is small. Saying that, I know of many Thais who stick to their morals strongly, and always protest the mis-justice (if that is a word) of the system.

My point is, nobody here knows all the facts to the story, so making educated judgements is impossible.
