I have just learned of the passing of ***** in Thailand this summer and am wondering if 'forum support' knows how I might find out more background. I have tried a general forum search but to no avail. I know from a search on 'legacy.com' that **** was commemorated at a funeral mass in Richmond, Virginia in September this year, but I can find little else.

"ONE PLANE" - that's not an airline, that's an airplane. And probably a fairly old one.

Does anyone have any experience of the dating website, sweetsingles? A Thai lady friend of mine has seen it advertised on Thai TV and wants to join. However, they dont answer her calls or sms messages. So I emailed them, twice - no reply!! Is it a scam company to get men to send them money??

Chiang Mai mosquito museum. Wow!! The 'ting tong' guy that runs the place has got mosquito strains named after him. He told me that he goes up into the mountain and sits in a bush until he feels a bite. As the mosquitos consume him, he'll sit still and let them feed for a minute then jamjar them and take them home. He studies the mossy and studies his bodily reaction and fever. Then he issues a scientific paper to anyone in the world who will listen. I asked him how many times he'd had malaria and he laughed and said, "too many to count". If you go, get covered in deet, the place is thick with mossies.

A locally organised blood group database would be a great thing. Im UK based for now or I would help organise it.

Thailand would rather 'open a vein' than have this eerie guy back. They are following protocol, doing what civil servants "respectfully suggest", they are toeing the line knowing he aint coming back. It's Wormwood Scrubs for Mr Smallbrain.

Ref overstays, it may help someone to know that I departed from Suvanabhumi on Wednesday last with a 7hour overstay on top of my 30 day tourist visa. Immigration were perfectly gracious and I was taken to a back desk where my passport was stamped twice, firstly the standard triangular stamp saying departed and secondly a square ish 5 line stamp saying overstayed 24. At least I think so, because it's in Thai and I can't read it. If anyone is interested I will happily PM them a photo of it.

Driving vehicles at night is safe if you do it regularly. Then the body is acclimatised. This guy was probably not a regular night driver and after very many hours on the road from Phuket and just before dawn at 05.30am, his body had to sleep. The driver and whoever decided on the schedule, will be doing a lot of soul searching.

Im sure I saw the hippo in Marina's last night, wearing fish nets and false boobies.

I think it's a bit early to start slagging off....Samui is notorious for sudden cross winds, and I wouldn't doubt the weather was the major factor here
There is huge commercial pressure to put the rubber on the tarmac whatever the conditions.

Apologies. Have booked in +1, but now have to book out. Enjoy

I quite like hotel hopping, 3 nights here / 3 nights there, so I guess we'll do uptown and out of town. The name of the 4*, if known, in Lamai would be much appreciated. Many thanks.
-
Thanks guys that should get me started. What a range at sawadee.com, 500b up to 12,000b per night!
-
The g/f has expressed a wish to holiday in a big hotel on Samui, near to nightlife. Island wise, ive only ever been to Phuket and Koh Chang, so any recommendations gratefully received. Hoping to keep it below 2000B a night, 3000 at a stretch.

The OP says he "got a further 15 days" when re-entering from Cambodia. Why only 15 and could he have got more by entering from a different neighbouring country, or by re-entering by air?

I am a shoe size 35-36 and on my last trip back to the UK, I had planned to get a nice looking pair of shoes. I came back without any because the shops very rarely had my size (I needed a UK size 3)... I even have a lot of trouble finding size 35 shoes here also. I wouldn't buy any shoes for anyone without them being able to try them on first. Even some of the size 3's I tried on in the UK were too big!
It sounds like a minefield, so I will definately wait and shop in Chiang Mai or Bangkok with g/f in attendance - thanks again.
-
Sane and sensible ladies, thankyou. Saves me a trip to Oxford Street. Can anyone recommend a shoe shop of merit in Chiang Mai instead?
-
Can any lady please help. My g/f has issued a shopping list which includes shoes. She is a Thai size 35/36, but I am currently in London and wonder if anyone knows the UK equivalent. Go on, save my life.

You guys are going to think me a smartarse , but I googled for some of the kit you recommended and found some comparative reviews. Also, there is a 2nd hand Acer on thaivisaclassifieds for 9000Baht. Thanks for getting me going.

Thanks v much to you both. Ive never had a net/laptop and am still using a computer I bought 10 yrs ago, so am a novice here. Is Linux a type of software or a design style? Also, if you could break down CAT CDMA/EV-DO that would help alot, as am doing this from London. Im guessing CAT is the local supplier of a signal called EV-DO? Finally, do we buy in Chiang Rai/Mai or Bangkok.

My G/f lives half way up a mountain near Chiang Rai. We want to get her something with which to communicate with the world. Her old mobile phone is steam driven and she has no home phone/landline. What would be best: laptop, Blackberry, something from Apple? Her needs are emails, phonecalls, Thai music and basic web surfing, but no complex computing. Very grateful for your experience in this.

I just told my wife that it could possibly be Kaeng Kro, she said, "yes, that's what you said before"! So perhaps your wife can't tell the difference between Gangkhor and Kaeng Kro either. If that's the case it's about 40 km North East of Chaiyaphum city on the road to Khon Kaen.
Kaeng Khro it is then, I am sure too. I stayed at the Thai Ngam Palace Resort (spelling?), which was a very nice hotel indeed, 800baht a night as I remember.
However, still no mobile contact. So can I ask a supplementary question? Feel free to tell me to post it elsewhere. I am trying to do the visa application by the book, but when it comes to getting a persuasive holiday letter/re-appointment offer from her employer, we are stuffed because of her unimpressive job and the fact that she has only been doing it for a couple of months. So no employers letter. Weekly wage slips at the most. Does this mean no visitors visa?

I am currently in UK and applying for a visitors visa for girlfriend to visit me. Have been advised to get a picture of her land and the house she is having built on it. It is rural and wont be easy to find. Anyone know of a local photographer, Thai or otherwise, around Gangkhor or Chaiyaphum. I am very happy to pay them.
Just curious
1. Been advised by who?
2. Are you paying for said Land&House ?
3. Are you SURE it exists?
4. How long has this 'short relationship' lasted and where you meet her?
5. Sorry for the Spanish Inquisition.
Dave
I have no secrets Dave. I have been taking advice from Siam-Legal over whether she is eligible for a tourist visa. They said, "Your girlfriend will need a letter from her employer and also documentation confirming her ownership of the land". This advice seems to be born out by the VAF1 application form and the guidance notes that go with it, but I am very happy to hear another view. I have to admit that the photograph is my idea.
We drove past the place in January this year and it was just a frame. She has no money to continue building works and indeed works in Mahachai making Kitty Kat out of tuna for 200 a day. I havent contributed to it, nor anything yet except for some dental work. Im sure the previous guy did. We met in Bangkok in April 07 and I have been back to see her twice, once to Issan and once to Mahachai.
Why, do you smell something fishy?

Very imaginative attack by the Dutch father, a stroke of genius, using skills he knows best and seriously ruffling Thai feathers, well done Sir.
