  1. "ONE joint (tobacco and marijuana) contains 20 TIMES more poisonous chemicals than A WHOLE PACKET (20) of cigarettes."

........looks like the loonies have decided to chip in!

crazy is it not? can these people be more ill informed, and it scarey as they have some say, and one actaully said " do some reaserch!

    as someone pointed out

what poison? proven by who?(I should be dead long time by this stupidity) which cigerette?, high, low?, middle tar?, self rubbed?

what amount of dope to tobbaco?

    which dope, nepalese, morroco

all anti drug people- please disagree with us if you wish, but you are helping yourself have any credabilty when stupidty like this comes out

Yes...every single word in that statement is questionable - - of course a hash joint would have tobacco in it too, so one would expect some extra ingredients, how will you quantify "dangerous"?

Why not compare it with baked beans....did you know that injecting baked beans directly into your veins can be fatal????

Really an assertion like that just goes to show how incredibly ignorant even nowadays most people are about drug use and abuse.

  2. What happened on Soi 6 over the weekend please? Did the bars open normally at lunchtime?

Some of them are trying to operate behind closed doors, but not sure they will keep on doing it with the police checking closely, and a few places getting caught already. Expensive at 30,000 Baht fine along with a 30 day closure!

Pubs like Queen Vic and Lord Nelson can open all day as long as they have the proper resto/hotel/guesthouse licenses.

The only thing the officials can bother them with is the alcohol law, which states that you can only sell between 11 AM and 2 PM and between 5 PM and 11 PM.

IMO, unfortunately this crackdown is here to stay!

They are however trying to work out a compromise, as of today this means:

Bar open at 4 PM, but no ladies (apart from a few proper dressed ones who can post as "waitresses") and no alcohol.

From 5 PM alcohol can be sold.

From 6 PM, when the entertainment license kicks in, the ladies can come out...

MMMM...interesting that the Vic and their establishmenrts are exempt but the Sportsman not............I like the bit about only 2 women and "properly" dressed....properly dressed for what???

I hear there will be another meeting in a few days/weeks.

Is there any significance in the rumour that a businesswoman has bought the street - the thoroughfare that is?

i would have thought that most of Soi Sex business is carried out in the afternoon?

  3. I think there is a distinct possibility that Pattaya may benefit from the "Wal-Mart" effect...in fact it could be re-named the "Pattaya" effect.

I mentioned this elsewhere.....if you are a middle-aged western male, you will have lost 25% of your holdings on the stock market, you house too is not only worth less but virtually unsalable and you will shortly be laid off if you are not already retired...so the answer is to "give up" and go and have a blast in somewhere cheap cheerful and sexy whilst you are still physically and financially able.

i.e. do it now while you still can and to hel_l with the consequences.

  4. Belgians eh? Isn't that a case of the pot calling the kettle black?

Everyone knows that whatever they do it won't last.....ive a few weeks and it goes back to "normal"............

what time do bars close now?

12, 1, 2, there's been so many rulings over the years.....

  5. Every few weeks someone posts something like this.

THis is probably just perception...if you start looking, you start seeing.

However in another thread it has been pointed out that the numbers of tourists ar down......so maybe they're just easier to see!

or maybe the tourist numbers are down so much in other areas that they are migratinng to Pattya in the hope of finding some business.

In the end it's a non-issue unless you are a closet queen or homophobic, in either case the problem is not the lady-boys, it's the observer.

  6. I have not succeeded in finding any "Le Creuset" here, however you might try Robinsons in Sri Racha.v they have pyrex.

Thai cooking does not involve ovens so oven-ware is very difficult to find.

I use pyrex and earthenware for oven cooking - i bought a good casserole pot in Fly Now outlet on Sukumvit.

The shop next to Foodland may be able to order you some something like a Dutch oven/or other cast iron pot.

as mentioned above, the Mayer factiory is in Laem Chabang, and has an outlet, open only at week-ends i think. but Robinsons stock their stuff.

  7. "living with consequences" - obviously can mean criticising them or changing them and of course publicising them.

S.E. Asia is a developing area and it's governmental institutions are at best unstable and rudimentary.

It is only right that if someone falls foul of a stupid, unjust or uncivilised law the law is criticised, no matter where that law is or how it is enforced.

When it comes to drugs - the problem is a social and psychological one so trying to involve the police or military in it is about as wise as hiring Bradley & Hindley as babysitters.

  8. THanks for you offer of help....I ended up in Hua Hin....largely due to some pretty typical thai-style organisation. good day on the beach etc and Phetburi market by 8 the next morning!

I guess that restaurant will have to wait til next time.....is it near a bridge? I looked on Google but the road overlay is crap.

  9. I have worked in Security in Australia & UK , as a Cop in the US (Gang Unit , SWAT , Drug Raids , Covert etc) I was Chief of the Transit ICG (Incident Control Group ) State Public Bus Transport in Western Australia for 14 + years , I worked the streets for decades in 3 Continents & trained (still do) Cops in US & Asian Countries in other areas . I have no personal feeling about Marijuana , EXCEPT, if it is illegal in the jurisdiction I live in or work in then its' a no go zone . The violent & anti-social actions by people under the influence of Drugs (ALL drugs including Alcohol) is an unbelievable sight to behold & bl---y dangerous to enforcement Officers & the Public.

On vacation in Amsterdam in 2004 I smoked a 'joint' in a Hash Bar & my wife had some Hash cake , it was LEGAL & I have always been curious. It was a disappointing experience after reading & being trained about its effects.

If you take a conscious decision to break the Law then you must be prepared to accept the consequences for your action if caught.

Do the Crime , Do the Time.

Malaysia has signs everywhere "DADA means Death" & they & the Vietnam Government just executed some dealers of VERY small quantities ( a couple of Aussies amongst them)

Bali jail has people in there for 20 years for smuggling Marijuana , & some Aussies on Death row for attempting to smuggle "H"

Does taking or smoking Dope of any kind make you so idiotic you cannot read Warnings or Understand the very basic word ILLEGAL.??

It seems simple to me if it is illegal don't do it , but hey , everyone makes their own decisions.

Now I just teach & don't work the streets except as a Consultant I have a care factor of Zero , unless you effect me or mine.

No sympathy for drug dealers of any kind, none for addicts either , because I believe that they made the first decision to go there. & don't "bleeding heart" on me as I have close relatives that are addicts & at least one convicted dealer & no sympathy for them either.

Obey the Law as it stands where you are is a good idea to keep in mind.

THis attitude is so common until the person gets stitched up by the local police for something they'd only "half done", the law in thailand is enforced in an extremely inconsistent way, whether you hace obeyed tht law or whtever may prove to be tangential in relation to any sentence that you receive.

You may have blind faith in the authorities and the law in Thailand now but wait until you feel the other side of it....remember don't even have to break the law to get into trouble here.

  10. Im going to invest in 2 things..

arms - for the war with Russia

and property in Pattaya - why?

I can see thousands of middle-aged men all over the western world losing their savings/shares/pensions - all they have left is a severely devalued house., and they're goping to say to themselves...

"fuc_k it, I've had enough, I'm going to sell up take what's left and shag myself to death in Pattaya!"

  11. Semantics -"dealers and junkies" very interesting - especially the comment "same thing" - a quick dismissive flick that actually misses a huge part of the debate about drug use.

i think some people here really need to do some research into drug use and how it relates to society.

Miost of the opinions expressed here are not actually opinions at all they are prejudices.

  12. Phetchaburi has hundreds of cafes, but few restaurants (and almost no English language signage). One I would suggest is located on the river at Google Earth reference 13, 05, 18.84N 99, 56, 54.78E. I think it is called Baan Rimnam, but I'm not sure. It's a little pricey (for Phetchaburi), but is in a nice setting and can handle large parties.

The most obvious attraction is Khao Wang, the palace on the hilltop, and the surrounding park. There are many other temples in the city of Phetchaburi, if that is your wont.

I am not aware of any Indian restaurants; only Thai and Chinese.

thanks, I'll check out Baan Rimnan - with a little trepidation as I'm footing the bill!

  13. Try chilli powder ............

netting or obstacles to where they perch may work too.

sometihing has attracted them....maybe a lack of snakes? They are the best wauy of keeping vermin down. Rats eggs etc are all on their menu!

Pigeions likke seeds, so if there is a source nearby.....

  14. Is this the right forum?

I'm doing a quickie w/e trip to phetburi in a couple of weeks, can anyone recommend

    - a good Thai restaurant - I'll have to feed about 15 to 20 people.

    - any attractions

    - do's or don'ts

    - any observations on the place?

PS - any Indian (Hindu) restaurants there?

  15. If you shoot the pigeons they qwill simply be replaced by new ones.

You need to address the reason they are staying/nesting at your place and remove the reason.

Failing that you might want to encourage some natural predators into the area....some snakes for instance?

  16. "Pushers and addicts" is symptomatic language of someone whose knowledge on the subject is 50 years out of date.....

    As for police experience.......

I regret to say that most people involved in dealing with drug related problems would regard that as a serious drawback in your understanding of the situation.

Especially in the US where they have patently failed to deal with drugs in a satisfactory way and continue policies that are neither efficacious or logical.

  17. Yes the firdge / freezer has a lot to answer for...of course in Thailand it is still an equipment market with regards to white goods and there is still a need for preserved foods...hence the stinky fermentation processes involved.

Did anyone see the UK news a few months ago? They blocked off several streets in London as they thought they'd "sniffed out" a bomb factory.....it turned out to be a Thai restaurateur making "Nam prik Pla"!

  18. As said above all cultures have strange eating habits. what I think is demonstrated here...and I think it's very sad.....is that over the last couple of generations a lot of people in the "West" have lost touch with their culinary heritage. Brought up on poor cooking and junk food they regard offal etc as something to be avoided or don't even recognise what they are actually eating. confronted with anything "different" and they turn their noses up or ridicule the food....well more fool them and all the more for us.

It'll be interesting in times to come when food can't be affordably transported around the world or even country) and we all have to eat the local seasonal or preserved food of wherever we are.
