  1. TAT always good for a laugh.

I suppose it is "The Most Amazing Show on Earth", where else could you go, and see people laying siege to the main shopping area of a capital for three months, then burn it down, or alternatively see another group of morond lay seige to the airport for two weeks.

Throw in jet ski scams, dodgy taxis, corrupt police,, King Power scams, duel pricing, numerous unexplained deaths, "suicides", muggings, theft etc, etc and it's pretty impressive

Hitting the nail on the head, love it.

Glad you spotted that one ;)

Dont forget, the deaths in Chiang Mai are purely coincidental unless you are over 65 then its down to old age. Most Amazing!

I think we members should copy and past the pictures from Thai news media and send in as our vacation pictures. All the bus, minibus, lorry crashes, the elephant stomping farang, the infamous inn at chiang Mai, ..........

tuk tuk beatings....oh what fun we would have with this contest.

  2. My Thai wife calls them the Bus Mafia. They just don't care not only about their passengers but do not respect other road users. They stay in outside lane and if you are in front of them (in any lane) it is hand on the horn to tell you to get out of their way. I love Thailand but the general Thai driver let alone Bus drivers have no idea about driving rules. No lights on when raining, continue driving on right when can move in making the other users break the law by overtaking on the inside. Never a day goes by when I not see cars, buses, lorries and motorbikes go through red lights. If I first in line to go when lights go green I wait for about 5 seconds before I move on.

I agree with you about the traffic lights!

If I am first in line I look both ways before moving off on the green light because Often I see buses and lorries going through a red light at reckless speeds because they are going too fast to stop, I have also seen many accidents at traffic lights many of them fatal.

Worst one was a pick up loaded with workers early one morning . Their bodies( I counted 10 ) were thrown out onto the highway, some a long distance from their pick up. I presumed dead because nobody was trying to help their lifeless bodies.

In the UK we have traffic light cameras to catch people who drive through a red light.

Also Thais seem to be afraid to turn on their lights in poor light. Many will only turn them on when it is not possible to see the road ahead. ( maybe they eat a lot of carrots ? )

Are they afraid it will cost them money if they turn on their lights?

It was 2 years before I understood ( if that is the right word !!!) Thai driving and would never drive here.

Now I drive like a Thai ( but safer ) and no problem.

Always make sure my windows are closed at police checkpoints too. So they do not pick on the farang driver.

"Are they afraid it will cost them money if they turn on their lights?"

YESSSS, in all seriousness. One day, I stopped along side a busy road with wife, to talk to her brother, 50 yr old lifer in the Army. It was overcast and looking like it would rain, hence driving with the lights on. When he finished talking to us, he pointed at the headlights asked why I was wasting money running the headlights during day? He was as serious as a heart attack when he asked. This forced me into a 30 minute auto engine 101 discourse with the wife, that use of the electric system does not cost money, who without batting an eye swore her brother knew more than I do. BTW I am older than he is. When she didn't take my word over brothers, I finished with, "When we get home, show me the Isuzu electric bill you pay each month". Silence for the next 25 kilometers.

  3. Agree with a lot of that. I buy fresh produce & fruit at TOPS because I prefer it. I do shop Villa & Foodland because of the selection of farang food.

I use TESCO & CF to buy coke, potato chips, paper towels that type of thing. CF do have a real nice bakery & I hope it doesn't go away. TESCO have nearly identical bakery & I will use them too.

TESCO have good prices on cleaning products plastic items consumer non durables. CF is very handy to where we live & I like it. The express check-out at TESCO is a Chinese fire drill. I avoid it for that reason.

How many have tried S&P brand rice bread? Its actually 60% wheat,40% rice, short loafs, but larger surface area each slice. Always fresh and soft, tastes great. I got addicted to this stuff. I find S&P vendors in Tesco, and some hospitals, snack and coffee area.

  4. Good that someone can still afford to shop at Villaaaa!

There's a myth still being passed on I see.

Villa is very reasonable compared to any other store if you are comparing apples and oranges of course.

Have shopped there almost from day one in Thailand and was thrilled when the next Pure Place branch opened.

I guess it depends on one's definition of "reasonable."

I like Villa, and I shop there regularly, and often for things that aren't available at any of the other stores.... So in that respect, they're reasonable....

But, in terms of actual pricing for same items compared with Foodland and even Tops in many cases, they're more expensive, often just a few baht per item.... on many if not most things, and across a wide range of food and non food items...

Tesco is a bit of a mixed bag.... They're cheaper on meat and produce, though their produce usually seems to be of inferior quality compared to Foodland, Villa and Tops.... They also have good prices on a lot of household non-food items like paper products and laundry and dish washing soaps.... But for a lot of canned or bottled food items, their prices are the same or sometimes even a bit higher than Foodland.

The more I shop, the more I find myself relying on Foodland for the majority of my household needs, and then supplementing them with selected items from Tops, Villa and Tesco where I know that particular store has either the product I want or regularly the better pricing on something.

It's a bit of a bummer, and says something about Thai retailing, that I can't manage to get most of the things I want at one or two stores...but instead have to go cherry picking from place to place...either for pricing....quality....or selection.

There's 3 kinds of shoppers. Type 1, the largest group, will take their flyers, sales ads put out by the markets, go to get the savings, and once inside the market, will buy other items, which are at regular price, and in some cases marked up to compensate for the on sale items. Retailers know this flaw in shoppers. Bait them in, and they will spend more. It is profitable.

Type 2 shopper, more self disciplined, will go in with sales ads, and buy only the sales items they need. The problem with this group is, they will go to 2, 3 or more large markets buying the on sale items they need, which defeats the purpose due to the fuel expended, or public transportation money spent going to each market. Not to mention the old adage "time is money", how much is the shoppers time worth to them?

Type 3 shopper, the smallest group, don't look at saving on the individual item prices, but look at volume. One trip shopping for a month or more, saves in itself on time and fuel.

Using myself for an example; I live in a city where the main industries are sea and fresh water fish, chicken, and pork. Beef is scarce here, in limited quantity, and cuts in Big C, Tesco, and all other markets around here. I do like to have on hand food types that are typical American items. I am forced to go to Bangkok for farang food. I have read the same said by Aussies and Europeans. It is all in the perspective when it comes to food shopping. No more frequently than once a month, more like once every 2 or 3 months,I will put an ice chest in the back of the truck, pull the wife out of her shop, and give her a day off work. Drive up to Bkk, hit Foodland, the larger Tescos, Big C, Tops, and Macro, already knowing what they have, and stock up on 2 or 3 months worth of farang only food, bulk household products, while the wife does her shopping for all that boring to me, "girly stuff". Throw in a lunch and dinner, and shopping becomes an adventure. What have I saved? Who knows and who cares? I got the food I want, the wife got a fun day away from home and shop, more husband/wife bonding, and I dont have to fill up shopping carts for 2 or 3 months. Incidentals are gotten in close to home markets, as needed. I suppose many cant do that due to not have 2 refrigerators and freezers to stock 3 mos worth, but you get the idea. It can be scaled down to suit individual situations.

  5. The below contains the text (scroll down) of Thailand's FDA warning about the indoor use of chlorpyrifos before the article was apparently withdrawn by the Bangkok Post:

    http://photo-journ.c...gn-media-report

Surasing said the team would also be happy to accept any help in term of experts and also warned that public should not expect too much because a disease investigation might not definitely find the exact cause of the death sometimes. He said the team would also have a teleconference over the case with foreign experts at 6pm yesterday. He said the hotelroom where Carter stayed prior to her death was also closed and the hotel insisted they didn't use the chemical spray chlorpyrifos. He also added that chlorpyrifos would be fatal if one drank a glassful of it or 87cc hence death by inhaling it was unlikely. He said they would continue the probe with helps from experts and would keep those involved updated.

So many lies and still the big WHY.:jap:

WHO should be pushing harder to find out WHY

  6. How can it be an overstay if you have been getting regular 90 day stamps, surely this would make you able to stay in the country legally?

If you are in fact on an overstay of 2 years, go to the border near Satun, be very humble and apologetic and pay 20,000 THB get a 2 week stamp and sort everything out after that.

I can answer that question about 90 day stamps. I have been all through what op is going thru. Without wasting time covering the why's that I got into a past 45 day overstay, let me tell you how I succeeded in staying in country without jail or deportation. The wife knows someone that works for immigrants coming into Thailand, and deals with immigration daily. We contacted her, told her my frightening discovery, and showed her the passport. she went with us directly to immigration, talked to a higher up there. Immigration officer was knocked back when she saw one of her officers signed the 90 day paper in passport with an expired visa stamp. they apparently don't always check visa stamp when revising the 90 paper. They said, had I gone to the airport, I would have been arrested, and processed thru the courts. By going to the immigration office, facing them with the mistake I made, they gave me a 30 day stamp, told me to go home and move 400,000 or 800,000 B to my thai account immediately, then come back in 30 days, show I have the money, do the whole paperwork for a 1 yr stay, pay the fine. 60 days later, i returned with 3mos documentation of having money in the bank, fine paid, given a serious warning, that if I let this happen again, I will be sent to home country for 90 days, or worse. Bottom line, find and pay a lawyer that works with immigration, or someone that does this line of work for incoming immigrants, go to immigration with them, and face immigration officers. Worse case scenario, you get sent back to home country, but odds are they will work with you, while scaring the hell out of you. They really dont want to incarcerate honest farang that make stupid mistakes.

  7. He gained national prominence by his fortune amassed from running the country's largest massage parlour.

Not entirely true. He gained much prominence by being the top thug who hired pick-up truck loads of thugs wielding wood and metal sticks - who showed up one night and leveled an entire city block of downtown Bangkok. That event violently destroyed many regular vendors' modest enterprises. Authorities knew he was the head honcho and paymaster, but when Chuwit surfaced days later (after hiding out by the side of a hwy), he threatened to reveal dirt on the top brass of his local police force (read: he knew first hand who was getting bribes to allow prostitution, and how much each was being paid), that the police chiefs let Chuwit off the hook.

The man is a, ''Maverick.'' I admire his stance he actually gave life to the comment , ''The Enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Stirred a few hornets nests or two and he debunked more than one of the old stuffed animated political Dinosaurs that abounded, and still in Thailand

Yea, Mavericks make good movie characters, but if you look closely at how they manifest on a day to day basis, you won't want to be on their bad side - could be quite painful - like a baseball bat to the head.

Sounds a lot like MAFIA or does he warrant a different title?

  8. He said the incidents were unfortunate for the hotel because each death was not related to the other

Well, since Thai authorities claim to still not know after all this time what exactly caused all the deaths, then how can the governor claim to know that the deaths don't have a common cause? Such as something inside the Downtown Inn?

PS - it's the CM province governor who's planning to have a news conference. The hotel isn't owned by him or his family. It's owned by the former CM mayor, who's a relative of the current CM mayor.

Oh yea, we can see right threw this transparency.

  9. Dont scare the tourists ...and the Thais ..as now this hotel might be haunted full of ghosts ..... I just hope the families of those who died in this hotel will know the truth one day .... not sure ... there are so unresolved "mysteries" in the country .

    And there lies the achilles tendon of Thais;

Want to close down the hotel? Get a few people courageous enough to stay a night there, and swear in the morning they saw ghosts fitting the description of the deceased. In no time it will become urban legend, and unstoppable. In 6 short months no Thai will stay there. Any and all Farang visiting won't stay there, if they are accompanied by Thai females.

  10. It's laughable Thaksin would be allowed to put a puppet PM in place in the form of his sister.

The politics of a fledgling Democracy where the Baht still rules above all.

He put a puppet PM in place in the form of his brother in law. He's just getting it closer to the family this time.

I'm reading over and over the article. TULSATHIT TAPTIM did a fine job writing this. Every word spelled correctly, proper punctuation marks, and easily understandable. Impressive. Who is this Kune Tulsathit??

  11. Hmmmmm just about 6 weeks from now and those that claimed "no elections" will be spinning in their figurative graves :)

There is still 6 weeks for them to put forward ridiculous claims as to why there won't be elections.

But there were a few posts that claimed that Abhisit was too scared to call an election. That one can now be debunked.

Ofcourse Thaksin said that there wouldn't be an election. I don't know why he's been campaigning if he thinks that.

Less than 6 weeks to announce a coup. :whistling:

your timing is out Cardholder. The coup comes after the election.....if the wrong side wins......

Seriously, I hope that this can be a truly free and fair election with all parties getting a fair share of TV time, there must be no interference from the military, ideally there should be international observers, despite Mr. Suthep's racist assertion that he doesn't like Farangs, and most crucially, all sides must accept the result of the election and allow the incoming government to rule according to the will of the people.

I wish the Thai people well in their deliberations over the next 6 or 7 weeks. My only involvement will be to be woken up at 8am every morning by both parties speaker trucks and losing two weekends business when bars are prevented from serving alcohol during polling. Fortunately Mr Abhisit has kindly chosen possibly the two lowest weekends of the low season for the polls!!

Where's your capitalist spirit?? Buy ear plugs for the loud speakers, and run a pre poll "special" with take away. They can't buy and drink at your business, but you know full well they will drink during the polling hours.

  12. Please correct me if I am wrong but this statement: PM's Office Minister Sathit Wongnontaey said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva countersigned the decree Monday afternoon.

Does this not mean "countersign" is to sign against something? I'm sorry my English is not perfect?

    It takes two signatures.

The PM and HRM. So either conter signs vs the other.

Yes thank you. I look in my dictionary this also. Thank you sir

Shouldn't that be "co-signed"? Counter signed would indicate contesting something, co-signing is agreeing or accepting

  13. I suppose Toyota employees should also get a brand new car for free!

Forced to eat noodles ??? I doubt anyone forced them. Do not like noodles go buy what you like!

Left overs food, as in unsold food! How is that leftovers??? Why should company put up a banquet for the staff?

Travel allowance? Is that a joke? Do not like to work or finish late, find another job!

Were paid ONLY 27 baht per hour?? Well that's ONLY the salary in Thailand . Are employees brain surgeons? Or highly educated staff ??

There is nothing unfair in removing those who disturb company operations. They used company time and money for their own agenda, further more they did not contact the management to voice their concerns prior to creating a problem .

If you ask me, nothing but 2 gold diggers trying to make some money.

KFC is a business and profits it makes is not an employees business . If employee has a problem with company profits, they are welcome to open their own.

First thing, 3 people, managing 33 stores and 900 employees, filed complaints in behalf of the 900 employees that were being paid B27/hr, or B5200/mo. Now Milind claims wage increases were given after April 4, but the article doesn't state when the 3 managers filed for wage increases. If they had filed before April 4, KFC ups the wage after, the company would be making an effort to be fair. If the 3 did indeed use KFC resources to solicit support from employees, then that could be justifiable cause for termination. One paid meal a day is a standard benefit given by a multitude of employers in Thailand. I have not heard about transportation reimbursements for employees, given at other companies though. Its interesting the comment made that some employees worked as late as 1am, but when did those employees begin work? Its not uncommon to stagger work shifts so you have a small army of employees at all hours, but keep the actual shifts at 8-10 hrs.

  14. us and uk foreign offices advised a caution to travelling abroad and citizens living abroad.

in the uk the home office asked for info on suspicious activities.

such steps might help to prevent loss of life.

one day thailand might become a hub for al qaeda escaping from pakistan, as was the case in he past

Notify the home office of the muslim residents of UK screaming death to USA in the streets, this week. Would that be suspicious enough activities?

  15. Here's some info on this chemical's status in the U.S.:

    For Release: November 30, 2010

EPA is seeking public comment until December 20, 2010 on a draft stipulation in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York that will stay further litigation with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA) on their claim that EPA has unreasonably delayed its response to their 2007 petition to cancel all uses and revoke all tolerances for the pesticide chlorpyrifos. Under the draft Stipulation and Order, the case will be suspended, provided (1) EPA issues a preliminary human health risk assessment for chlorpyrifos by June 1, 2011, and requests comment on that assessment; and (2) EPA sends NRDC and PANNA a written response to their petition by November 23, 2011. If the lawsuit is not reactivated by January 23, 2012, it will be dismissed.

    http://epa.gov/oppfe...s-petition.html

Also EPA fact sheet on chlorpyrifos

    http://www.epa.gov/o...rpyrifos_fs.htm

    Health Effects

    • Chlorpyrifos can cause cholinesterase inhibition in humans; that is, it can overstimulate the nervous system causing nausea, dizziness, confusion, and at very high exposures (e.g., accidents or major spills), respiratory paralysis and death.

    • In June, 2000, the Agency entered into an agreement with the technical registrants to eliminate virtually all homeowner uses, except ant and roach baits in child resistent packaging.

    • Residential postapplication exposures may occur after termiticide use in residential structures. To mitigate risks from this use, the technical registrants agreed in June 2000 to limit termiticide treatments to 0.5% solution, and cancel all postconstruction uses. Pre-construction use will remain until 2005, unless acceptable exposure data are submitted that show that residential postapplication risks from this use are not a concern.

    Also:

If you decide to kill the bed bugs yourself, apply an insecticide that is specifically labeled for bed bug management. Apply to hiding places around base boards, door and wall moldings and floor boards. Caution: NEVER USE ANY INSECTICIDE ON A MATTRESS - unless the label specifically refers to application to a mattress. Most insect sprays are not registered for application to mattresses. People often opt rather to discard the mattress.

    http://www.bed-bug.o...s-for-bed-bugs/

Thats interesting. Does anyone know that Thailand mattress manufacturers impregnate them with an insecticide to prevent bed bugs? I discovered this 4 yrs ago and wondered if it had anything to do with the wife and I not getting quality sleep, ever. Save the sharp witty comments about poor sleep due to something else popular in bed, thank you very much. Besides we all know that after enjoying that other favorite purpose of the bed, we tend to sleep much better.

  16. Well done Mr Pilot for standing up for what YOU believe in (fear of being blown up) .. after all isn't that what Muslims around the world have been doing lately i.e. standing up (or is it blowing up) for what THEY believe in.

Flame away...but for every one of you that does I'll bet there are 100 who agree with me...

Count me #2. Lets hear from the the other 98

Israel profiles and they have a great track record of keeping their airports and planes safe.

  17. Where can I report my ex and her mother for subjecting my 4 year old daughter to these bad Thai soap operas?

Whoever the authority is should make sure that Thai soap operas that have nothing to do with proper moral values should be screened after bed time.

Thai soap opera teaches kids the act of promiscuity, which leads many to prostitution.

I have a hard time stretching my imagination to believe that children between the ages of 6 and 13 would say to adult strangers with a microphone that they're most enjoyable scenes are women trying to get men into the sack. Not to mention 2160 respondents in 17 provinces. These interviewers actually blanketed 17 provinces, and all those parents weren't the least bit embarrassed to admit their children watch this soap???

  18. CNN reports that Osama was killed in a mansion outside of Islamabad by the U.S. /via@mpoppel: CNN's @EdHenry

In a mansion outside Islamabad is hardly in hiding. Are we expected to believe the Pakistanis knew nothing about it. Maybe they let the address slip when Cameron handed over the 600k+ GBP!

Some odd billion $ given to Pakistan to eliminate terrorism in their country since 9/11, 3 billion $ set aside for them for 2012, Osama in a $2mil mansion heavily secured with 8-12 ft walls, with guards, with no internet, no phone lines in a city of residences that pale in size, 1 mile from the Pakistani military acadamy likened to US West Point, hiding in plain sight. Did the Pakastani military/govt know he was there all along. MOST likely. They didn't like drones because US was getting closer to him by the week, without American casualties. Now we will hear how great the Chosen One is because Osama was taken out on Obama's watch. Had this been done with Bush still in office, the world and the US would be crying for a 3rd term for him. This American says, Obama didnt take him out, a Navy Seal team did, who are members of the same US joint military organizations that a few weeks ago Obama threatened to stop monthly income checks to if he didnt get his way with the budget.
