  1. like the rest of the world..thailand has their 1%..who are flashing it around to the exclusion of the 99%...up in Isaan and probably many other areas of thailand families have to get by on less than 300 baht a day, with no one to fall back on except "the family"

incomes stagnate yet prices go up.More young ones on yabaa begets more violence.

It's not just Thailand old fella, it's a world wide phenomenon.

very true ND...thinking OZ and ice.

  2. well depends how much you are spending on them, they can't eat your love!Yes

Yes and this is the crux of the matter.Of course thai ladies will love their partner, thai or farang, but there is the expectation of the man taking care of her financially, and if possible her mom and pop too..Many times here on TV we here of the farang running out of money, cannot support his lady anymore. So what is she to do?...she may still love him but they've got to eat.And if she has no decent qualifications her salary will never be enough to support her,her farang man and her mom and pop. There lies the problem...the same would apply if her partner was thai.

  3. just your perception in my opinion. It's true that people have more money given that the middle class has more disposable income. But not much of a change in terms of culture in my opinion. What's changed is more the trends, i.e. interest into Korean bands etc.

Do some research, easy enough, people's attitudes have changed all over the world in the last 10 years 5 years and before, especially younger people. The 'entitled / ME generation'.

There are 30 young foreigners (I guess 25 to 30 years old), mostly female, staying in my small BKK hotel, on a training course, 99% have never before been outside of their home country (all western countries).

They have no respect for anybody, they just talk over the top of whatever is going on and are shocked when they don't get instant service or answers. They stand right in the way of other guests trying to carry food from the breakfast buffet and it's obvious to anybody they are blocking the path of others, polite request to other people to pass receive no attention at all.

Perhaps 20 of them arrived in one group and got annoyed when they had to stand in line for check-in. One girl "I don't have to do this at home and I don't give copies of my passport to anybody." Another foreign regular guest tried to explain that the hotel is required by Thai law to have a copy of the passport. New guest rudely responded that it's not required in her home country so the hotel has no right...

They ask ridiculous and demanding questions to the hotel reception staff. One exxample, 'Where can I buy some size xxx dresses New York latest fashion for under US$30?". This is whilst the 2 receptionists are in the process of trying to check-in 20 guests. When the staff respond politely that they don't really know, the response is "why not, can't you do some research?"

One complained the next morning that the coffee is not to her liking and insisted that the hotel send out NOW for Starbucks for her. In reality it's very nice hill tribe coffee blend and certainly not cheap coffee.

It's pretty much the same all over the world

Man, that's pretty bad. And this is the future of western civilization?

well scorecard you are witnessing 30 years of femail rights, the femail nazi's............bolshy young western women who want to be like men...males that have come after the baby boomers have become conditioned to this to.

  4. Although it seems that the OP is just worrying about getting a free ride, i think his perception is right.

Not only Thailand, but the whole world is changing faster and faster, and not only because we are getting older.

People are more self-centered, i mostly blame the abuse of technology, and the bad quality of the food.

I understand about technology making people more self centred, but your comment about bad quality food? making more people self centred.

  5. If the OP is in a depressed state i cannot see a teaching job being any help at all.teaching is not easy, i would think you need to be well balanced. But writing online sounds a better option, lots of advice has been given here.

Sounds to me the OP has stubbornly refused to entertain the idea of leaving thailand(he will not be alone there)i think its called "thai fever",so, as another poster suggested, ask a thai friend for a place to sleep, and hopefully feed you which will give you breathing space. Not sure what to do about your landlord you said his patience was running out and he could turn you in to immigration.

  6. Best to ignore, yes he's being cheeky, taking the piss even.Depends how old your daughter is,if she's a young teenager with confidence you could tell her to explain to the car park guy that 'my dad is in fact quite young but is run ragged by mama who is much younger than papa",also papa drives a crap heap of a car cos mama insists on driving the merc.biggrin.png

  7. Reading between the lines, it seems that the consensus is that $5m is insufficient.

At age 60, working? I doubt it.

May need to adjust expectations until there is equilibrium?

Say expected life is 80yo - 20 years for $5m.

5 million US dollars at today's exchange rate =175 million baht!..are you telling me you cannot live off that for 20 years?

Now of course if the amount you have suggested is not true and all you have is 5 million baht then the answer is yes you cannot.

this whole topic is non sensical.

  8. The op is obviously not retired special forces unlike me!!

I'd have taken the gang out swiftly & retreated to my erv.

Wouldn't have broken a sweat & had a nice tea while discussing the small skirmish with my other SF best friends I'd just met.

  9. I too feel fortunate to be living in Thailand and yes, luck does have something to do with it... Yes, I have worked hard my entire life, been smart enough to avoid manual labor and wise enough to have the funds so I can enjoy retirement here... The luck comes into play in that I was born into a good family in a 1st world nation, providing opportunities not available to most Thais... As the saying goes, there by the grace of God go I...

yes we dont chose where we are born or who we are born to.poverty can come down to laziness, poor education and also poor parenting,in the west all these things can be overcome through government education programs that are usually free if you are unemployed, but in thailand there is little encouragement from the thai establishment.Quite simply they are happy to keep the poor poor, that is why there is little effort to raise the educational standards here.

  10. for sure the farmers work hard . My wife's father who is 87 years old worked hard all his life and can even now can outwork me anyday. The wife's family look down on anyone who doesnot work hard.

It's called false pride, any bumpkin can sweat in the sun all day for nothing.

Lucky for me, I've always been smart enough to not have to work hard.

come on mate that's just not true of thailand, maybe in the west.many poor in Isaan had to leave school at 12 years to help with the farm,no education(mind you you stay on at school here till your 18 and still be dumb)there only choice, work in a factory or on a building site.try and dig yourself out of a hole on 10,000 baht a month.

  11. I don't see a trap although their could be one later on. If you're 60 or more then watch out but I suspect you're much younger. So go to Sisaket with her and enjoy yourself.

    I'm 22

bar girls are clever, just like a fisherman catching a fish the bait is added(short time),no mention of money after, she may even buy you little inexpensive things to dull your senses.Beware the "hit" will come later.

You can do better, university girls, girls working in shops, girls that have real jobs still want to be taken care of with someone that has some money to support them.Going to sisaket is a bad idea in my opinion.Just keep shagging and smiling,by all means pay your dues and move on to the next one.You will soon understand everything because it will all be repeated to you over and over again like a broken record.

Not great advice at 22. May be better to take a shot at the real thing when your young and don't have that much cash.

Things don't get easier as you get older.

    * Nice to know you learned to read. Hope my post is not too advanced intellectually for your small brain.

I thought it was great advice,at 22 i was in bangkok at the height of the vietnam war being taken care by a bar girl(i had no money) and i dont remember asking her to show me her monthly stipend!tongue.png

  12. For some people the adjustment from working to retiring is very difficult. You cannot blame your location its up to you to change and find something. The rose tinted glasses usually come off after a few years, and if you are not careful start to find faults in the society you now live in.

Moving to another location or country wont solve the problem. What might make you feel good is helping less fortunate people, and here i am thinking about poor thais in rural communities.Your wife or g/f could be instrumental in helping with this,it would mean less time thinking about yourself.

  13. attachicon.gifAustralia nanny state_ Have we become a nation of idiots_.htmlyes coaster you are right it is hot and dirty here too but i like the life style and culture.

"yes coaster you are right it is hot and dirty here too but i like the life style and culture."

Ok,appreciate you backing down from that comment,i know not many would.

As for the culture here,i'm not too impressed with it.

Anyone that thinks making the right offerings then jumping on a MB with no helmet, possibly drunk and talking on the phone at the same time is going to bring them good luck...well!!

    Lifestyle,yeah,love it.Big draw card here.

    Scenery,landscapes too.

At the right time of the year places like..

    West coast Phuket beaches.

    Kao Yai

    Phang Nga Bay-Krabi.

    Phu Ruea

    the North...are outstanding.

I spend a lot of time at out of the way places and really like what it has to offer here.

The things you mention are n't really about culture but about bad attitude. When i mention thai culture i am thinking about the inter dependancy of families, showing of generosity, taking care of one another.
