I live on the Darkside, aprox 10 kms from the city centre, I have absolutely no interest in going into town at night, or in the day for that matter, except to go shopping, the place gets more dangerous as the years roll by, rumour has it that a large shopping complex is planned for our side of the railroad tracks, the sooner that happens the better because it means I can avoid Sodom & Gomorrah altogether.

We have great bars and restaurants out here, no need to go there at all.

you have your own little version of S & G...i have been there..i know,so stop the pretence.

This says it all.   "He was last seen at his apartment in Cha Am on Tuesday August 2nd by his friend David Hodgins, who described Mr Hughes as being “very much not himself”. "

He has been teaching at the University for 6 years.  That equates to stability and sense of responsibility.   His friend claims he was "very much not himself"  that shows problems or concerns.  Could be depression or the friend knows far more than he is claiming.  Possibly a Gay relationship that hasn't gone too well.

I would suspect suicide.  A man just picks up and leaves his apartment unlocked with his possessions inside is one who doesn't expect to return.

Other than suicide, perhaps foul play by Mr. Hodkins if he was involved in the relationship with Hughes.  Sad either way and I have little hope for Mr. Hughes being found safe and sound.

I will refrain from casting all the blame on Colonel Mustard using a rolling pin in the living room.

    a gay relationship?.....................is n't that a giant leap forward

For all the posters blaming Thai people for most of the accidents and not the tourists; have you ever lived on Samui? I see at least one serious accident per day when driving around Samui. In the daytime at least 70% of those accidents involve foreigners on motorbikes. In the night it's more Thais on motorbikes and often more deadly. (Speed+alcohol+no helmet).

most of the accidents involving tourists...are a direct result of crazy out of it thai drivers, tourists need to understand that unlike the west these thai riders will over take on the inside, overtake on a bend or hill with no visibility..be completely out of it on ya ba etc  etc.take these idiots off the road and accidents will go down substantially...but as usual the blame  is directed at tourists, nothing wrong with thai driving.

So, If was the type that kept himself to himself, why would anyone raise alarms after not seeing see him for just a few days?

So how did they know anything was amiss?..to the extent that they thought it neccesary to break into the house?

Judging by how they found him, he wasnt seen through a window or such.

all very strange for everyone not to know anything but know something was amiss.

Unless he was paying the rent each day, but unlikely since he had been there a while.

    something smells sour in Dodge

ok sherlock better bring watson in.lol

Having malice aforethought isn't always the same thing as premeditation. If I tell you that I slept with your wife last night, and you run home, get your gun from the basement and then go upstairs and shoot your wife, that isn't necessarily premeditation, at least not in all jurisdictions. In many (if not most) jurisdictions that would be considered second-degree (not premeditated) murder done in the heat of the moment.

A good recent example of this is the case where a group of teenage boys attacked and killed a handicapped man. After getting into a verbal altercation with the handicapped man, the boys ran home and got weapons, before returning and killing the handicapped man. The prosecutor ultimately dropped the premeditation (first degree murder) charge because there was insufficient evidence to prove that the crime had been planned in advance.

Choosing to shoot someone in a well-lit convenience store loaded with CCTV cameras, steady foot traffic, and multiple employees sounded pretty impulsive to me.

cant agree unless said guy always carries a gun...would suggest he followed the women into the store with exact idea of killing..hardly impulsive...will have to let the judge decide if it ever goes to court.

Koh Samed is a National Park and you pay to go on the island - as far as I'm aware the National Park on KC doesn't cover all the island and the PUBLIC ARE NOT ADMITTED - so tell me I'm wrong but at present I can only conclude that this is a barefaced scam.

you are correct....the tourist areas of koh chang are not covered by any national park.

  9. went to thonburi hospital yesterday to have my ears checked out(one feels like it is blocked up)

Sure hospital looks old and jaded but the service was good.Ear doctor was at govt. hospital but could see me at thonburi at 11.40 am..so my wait was an hour and a half.

Doctor was punctual and asked me to go govt. hospital for a hearing test, said he would see me there 1pm.Bill from thonburi was 250 baht.

So i went over to govt. hospital had ears tested...service again was very good, doctor saw me and came to a diagnosis...bill was 400 baht.

My first visit to the two hospitals in roi et have been good,so thanks to everyone for your information.

  10. this article is multi faceted, talking about under aged girls led to prostitution, maybe boys too. Then it goes on about sad older western men, leaving families behind in the west to pursue a sex life with younger girls.

If dan is concentrating on the first all well and good but leave the latter alone.

Nearly all the ladies working in bars come from Isaan, many have mothers that plied their trade before them and were encouraged to do the same,to hook a farang so the family can get out of their poverty,so no one forced them. And lets face it its not just about sex tourism,in every thai town/village there are karoake bars for thai men to visit.

These ladies dont have to sell their bodies, but it is thought of as an easier way to make money than work in a factory or to become a street food vendor.

What would help the thai poor is if the government got serious about raising the minimum wage substantiously, even then prostitution would still be prevelant..

This article with dan and his aussie chick reporter is as sad as the content it thinks it is exposing, some people just feel the need to hook into a cause to get them up in the morning.

  11. This is just the start of all the problems the UK will have to face because of the Brexit vote.

What a disaster for our country.

It could be..a steady hand is needed, good lawyers and financiers plus brexit politicians,I think this has a long way to play out.If brexit is going to happen things need to be fast tracked quickly..the remainers have been caught out and they're not happy,if things get out of hand it become nasty.Cameron will be judged to have played a very poor hand, and yet the guy,i believe,is decent, but out of his depth politically.

  12. Frankly, given the immense consequences- both known and unintended, I'm surprised they didn't require a 2/3 majority to make such an historic change.

    Exactly.

good point...but why did n't the remain vote win?...you cant keep asking for a rerun just because they dont like the verdict,It's what brussels did to referendum outcomes they did n't like, that's why brexit won people are fed up.Any result was always going to be devisive and would be the same if remain had won.

  13. I believe the blame for this debacle lies squarely at the feet of the un elected commissars in brussels.

their penchant for living off taxpayers money, driving around in limo's and constant free lunches,

introducing ridiculous laws plus the european court of justice banning countries from expelling undesirables because of their so called human rights.People are fed up with it.

I do feel sorry for the young ones who feel betrayed, who feel their life and prospects have been cut from underneath them.

If brexit does indeed go ahead, the breakup of the UK seems inevitable, england and wales on their own will have a smaller say in world affairs.

But on a positive note the two nations will have control of their own destiny,The EU in all its glory is on a slippery slope anyway, the tide is turning in all western countries as people are fed up with the "establishment" political correctness etc..and now nationalism is taking hold as people have had enough with being told what to do by unelected idiots.Maybe it wont all be so bad for the younger generation, but so much uncertainty for europeans living in the UK and for britons in europe,a strong guiding hand will be required,
