Nothing in your post suggest harm from dope. It seems like individual choices. As for your 3rd friend are you saying he lost his will, his job and his house simply because he smoked dope?
I think the answer to your question is yes. He is suggesting simply that.

The problem with cannabis is the same as alcohol. Some people can’t take it in moderation.
in my village in Isaan the norm for locals is to drink until falling down drunk. There is no few drinks or one drink. I only have anecdotal evidence, ie the few people I know, but I see the same thing happening with cannabis.
Tobacco is slightly different. Yes it causes significant long term health risks and is addictive, but it doesn’t alter the state of mind while being consumed. At least not to the same degree.

Singapore has an ongoing case involving several billion SGD worth of assets seized from around a dozen people of Chinese origin, holding passports from several countries. All accused of money laundering illegal proceeds from online gambling.
If squeaky clean Singapore can find that much in its system, imagine how much there really is in opaque Thailand

When was the last time you tried to open a new account with a new bank then as you've lived here soo long ?
Only 3 years ago to open a new account with the BKB I had to take my wife and marriage certificate along, even though I've been on a marriage extension for 9years. Many people also have to get a letter of residence from immigration.
I have to confess that I opened a mule account only recently.
My daughter is 16 but couldn’t open a bank account in her name because her Thai ID card was a juvenile variety rather than adult. So I opened it in my name, using her phone number, and I put a bit of money in it for her each month. Now she can use her phone to pay for grab orders or to scan at shops. No difficult questions were asked, took longer to queue than open the account.
she has her adult ID card now, but we haven’t got round to opening an account in her name. Guess we’d better do that before we get swept up in the new stringent crackdown 😂

to me there’s a somewhat easy fix .
Mandate that any account that is used for purely immigration purposes (ie holding X baht for visa issuance/renewal basis) be done so at Krungthai Bank … and concurrent with that, mandate that any Krungthai bank will open accounts for any foreigner IF said account will be used for his/her immigration purposes.
Id choose Krungthai as they are the defacto state bank for retail and institutional affairs (but also true they are also partially publicly held and whose shares trade on the domestic equity exchange) and the one most integrated into the governments business.
for consumer protection you could add restrictive language like these accounts must earn a minimum of the BoTs BIBOR (or some other consumer based rate) and that it is liquid to the extent required by Immigration. That way there is little financial downside to holding your funds at Krungthai, you’re assured that you be an actually get an account and that they account type meets the immigration rules.
Two upsides.. As Krungthai is largely a SOE you’re essentially providing capital to a SOE.. and #2, you’d essentially kill off that catch-22 of needing an account to get your long term visa/renewal, but can’t get an account until you have that long term visa/renewal.
I appreciate your taking the time to make a suggestion, but I can’t help think that you are making a problem where one doesn’t exist.
Or if there IS a problem, you’re using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. A few random farang struggle to open a bank account here when they first arrive because they don’t know which bank has less strict requirements. And for that you propose forcing every farang in Thailand who makes use of a long term visa, to open an account with a specific bank. You are having a laugh, surely?

Yes the Catch 22 situation, Immigration want an account in your name, most banks say No you can't you need a 1 year Visa/extension.......
Some say that, others don’t. Have to pick the right colour

In terms of compliance, how about doing something about the rampant mis selling by banks that goes on. A major bank bundles accident insurance with the purchase of an atm card. If you want the card, you MUST buy the accident insurance, paid for with an all inclusive fee.
Funny thing is, I actually already have accident insurance, not only that, accident insurance FROM THAT BANK.
British banks paid out billions to customers who were mis sold insurance they didn’t need when applying for loans. The practice of forcing customers to buy insurance along with an atm card is no different.
So comply that!

Oh I think there are plenty of farang owning weed shops.A Dutch guy around here has three outlets and one more being readied for opening as we speak. TBH, in my area of Phuket I’d go so far as to say it’s MOSTLY farang who own shops.
Quite why weed sold by farang is harmful and that sold by Thai’s is not, I don’t know. Anutin has me beat on that one.

now let get to to the FACTS....a rare thing theser days on this site
the POST say he seemingly left many FALSE statements about the business....yes that IS defamation...
TRUE statements would NOT be...see how that works. as i have left BAD reviews here in LOS based on BAD service aka truth
Saying FALSE things about any business can lead to this ,,anywhere....see how this works???
but do go on about freedom of speech etc,,,you must be the one making jokes about bombs on planes.....smh
whats your grievance today ????
A true statement that causes “harm” to a business or individual is still regarded as defamatory in Thailand. The issue at point according to Thai law is not whether a statement is true or false, it is whether a business/individual suffered from it.
so I am afraid you will need to reassess how things work.

Criminal defamation is over the top but that's the law here.
You are hoisted by your own petard. Your statement about the defamation laws in Australia is correct. But in Thailand you can be sued for defamation EVEN IF, your statement is true.
Perhaps it is the case in other countries, but I personally don’t know any.

“Despite benefiting from the restaurant offering a convenient access passage, Alexander was asked to stop using it …”
in what universe does this make sense? If he was asked to stop using it, how could he benefit?
sometimes it just pointless to read any news article posted here. There are so many contradictory statements, none can be trusted. SMH.

Participating in Songkran festivities and it’s only being reported NOW? On the ball these journalists are not. And they see fit to include in the articlewhat they themselves term an “unrelated” incident that happened just yesterday.
its gobbledygook

Ain’t no way some random poor person is going to make good in Thailand if there is a chance for the authorities to snaffle it. There are plenty of influential people who think they are far more deserving

What are these negatives he's talking about. Road accidents, domestic disputes, sexual assaults and other crimes are always fueled by alcohol or yaba, not marijuana. Pot smokers can barely move after smoking weed with THC levels of 20-30 percent. This is Thaksin returning favors to the people who brought him home.
That barely move thing. Not such a good thing when people are driving or riding a motorbike

I’m not bothered if people want to smoke cannabis, but it’s more anti social than normal smoking because of the smell. Indoors only and at dedicated cannabis shops would help protect other people who are eating, drinking, socializing and don’t want the stink around them.
imho if people want to use cannabis, it’s because it alters their state of mind, much as alcohol does. So driving whilst high should also be out of the question.
its not the people who use cannabis that are the problem, its the impact that it has on people near them. At the moment its out of control.

Gone too young for the stupid actions of a speeding driver.
The Police obviously not interested. No cameras and declining to take footage from local store owners, no check on drink-driving, nothing......... It stinks.
Will we have the outrage at the death of an innocent woman or the involvement of the interior minister asking questions about policing in Phuket?
We had it for weeks when a woman was kicked in the back by a foreigner, heads rolled all over the place. A trivial incident that made international news and drew the nation's ire, carefully choreographed by the media to whip up anti foreigner hysteria.
Or is this another road death not newsworthy enough, as it involves terrible driving on the part of Thais as usual.
What’s required is some mobile phone footage filmed by a concerned citizen, followed by some moral outrage by outraged netizens. They police this country these days because without that the police don’t care.

How could the police test a hit and run driver for alcohol and/or drugs?
The refusal to look at nearby cctv footage is a strange one. It would be interesting to know the thinking of BIB on that one.
Traffic light cctv not working…..par for the course.

I don’t think he was working illegally online. He was working illegally. He solicited business online for his illegal activities.
A slight difference.

I don’t believe that to be an accurate statement. Assuming he didn’t commit any crimes in Singapore, he would not be punished there. He would be extradited, just as is happening in Thailand. So no caning.

If he was bleeding in a ditch, he probably would have been found and his family informed. He was on holiday so probably is in a tourist area. Check his hotel room as it’s much more likely to be where he is if he has encountered some problem. A heart attack or stroke or some other illness is more likely than the bleeding in a ditch scenario. Or, he could just be ok and not have been in touch.

The real question is: why would you make a child with a woman who's clearly a nutjob. The signs must've been there before it happened.
And do it all over again, either with these children, or after she makes new ones. Reminds me of the first girl I met in Bangkok- by the time I met her, at 26, she's already had 4 (one died), and from the time I dumped her (for being crazy and violent) within a few years she made 3 more. Textbook example of someone who should NOT reproduce yet she can't stop.
He didn’t. The child was from her previous marriage

Bad News For Weed Shops: Potent Cannabis Poses Mental Health Risks

Don’t think the issue at hand is whether drugs do more damage than alcohol.
The issue is whether drugs do damage. Lots of opinions on both sides of that one.
