  1. I'm very interested in this thread, I hope to take my Thai wife to live in the UK this year (visa permitting) and Wimbledon will be the closest temple to us. But I had to laugh at the highlighted bit, sounds like going to the zoo!

I was in stitches the first time I went.

Everyone turns up in their 'sunday best' with plates of food for the monks.

The monks file in, in solemn silence, give a blessing and eat their food.

As soon as the monks leave, WW2 broke out with everyone fighting for food in a really light hearted many. I noticed some people hiding plates of dessert in cupboards so that there would be some left after devouring their food mountain of main course.

Good fun, just like feeding time at the zoo

  2. I never have any problems when living in Thailand and have a very high oppinion of the intellegence of Thais.

    You are absolutely correct.

Some Thais are very clever and give excellent service.

We have an electronic repair man in our town who is a lot better than any I have met in UK

However the incompetent tradesmen always outnumber the good ones.

How would you feel if an electrician tried to NAIL some wiring onto a tiled wall in your house?

Should he have stopped to think when the first tile shattered or was he correct to continue and shatter EVERY tile.

  3. And Makro usually have large (and relatively cheap per-kilo) blocks of Anchor cheddar,

Makro are doing a special at the moment.

Buy one 2kg block and get a 2kg block of Gloucester FREE

Thats 4kg of chesse for 760 baht

The Gloucester is labelled as cheddar but looks and tastes like Gloucester.

When the Gloucester runs out the offer will end.

  4. I was going to boycott this thread as I find it too painful to think about it but as I appear to be in sympathetic company I will join in.

I used to have my own engineering company in UK with my own personal workshop which was equipped with any and every tool that I needed regardless of costs.

Most of my tools were SnapOn but even they didn't make every tool that I needed so I would search out tool makers that made all sorts of special tools. I probably had the biggest collection of bearing pullers in the UK, plus the precision stuff such as digital bore gauges and digital calipers. My set of Webster gauges alone cost over 1000 quid.

What happened you might ask (if you haven't fallen asleep already)

well I sold the business to a tool freak and he wouldn't buy unless I left him everything.

A tool freak, by the way, is someone who owns a set of SnapOn opened enders which have been double polished, laquered and engraved with your name in 18ct gold.

Never undone a nut, they hang on your bedroom wall.

  5. Meanwhile, the Thai-Burmese Township Border Committee met on Wednesday in Mae Sai district to work out details of the establishment of a permanent border checkpoint and to draft measures on suppression of smuggling between the two countries after the bridge is opened.

So this meeting took place 4 days before the bridge is to be opened and is to DRAFT measures of smuggling supression.

The words horse, door and bolted spring to mind.

  6. I have been in LOS for 11 years so I cannot tell you what it is like today but I used to visit quite often when I was in UK.

You can expect a very warm welcome from some very nice people.

The head monk was always interested in me and when he found out what I did for a living he paid me a visit at work.

They have a big festival at SongGran which is worth a visit just for the food but I used to visit mid-week when it was quiet.

If you go on a Sunday at 11am you can feed the monks and then join in the free for all afterwards. Enjoy.

  7. I think the roads are a lot more slippery here in Thailand than Australia so the moment the computer senses the wheel slipping the ABS will cut in giving you maxim braking with out locking up so I think thats why it cuts in a lot earlier in Thailand and giving you the sense of less braking power

Or I could just be full of shit :o

No you are not full of shit, the road surfaces here feel as thou they are covered in sand compared to the UK ones.

My tyres last at least twice the mileage I used to get back home which would support your idea.
