If you would have proof of onward travel, you will have no problem and don't need a tourist visa.
(Without a visa, the airline might want to see proof of onward travel within 30 days or deny you travel).

The ghost in the machine has caused a double topic.

With 400,000 in the bank OR an income of 40,000 a month (which can be from abroad) it will not be a problem for her to get an extension.
if going for the 400,000 option the money needs to be in the bank for 2 months prior to applying for the extension. The extension costs 1,900 baht.
As said, it might even be possible without the money, but that rule is still unclear.
-
The cost is the same for any kind of extension, a visa exempt entry is of course free (but one need to pay for the visa to enter the other country).
Mai Sai immigration will probably tell her to get the extension instead of getting a visa exempt entry and might not allow her to leave.
Thanks Mario,
But, at the moment her tourist visa is still valid/in date, so couldn't she hop over the border at Mai Sai and come straight back in and get a 30 day visa exempt?
A while back their policy was that they would tell people to get an extension instead of allowing the boarder run.

Good to hear, although some organization are at it for years deceiving people. But they rarely help with a work permit. Witht eh WP it will be little problem getting an extension for up to 1 year.
You should get travel insurance in the UK, that allows volunteering. Normally they allow you to travel for up to 1 year.
The charity should introduce you to a bank, that would help in opening a bank account. Although you could simply use your ATM card of your UK account. With larger sums it is more profitable to transfer money from the UK to a Thai bank account.

Don't go on a Monday.
3 PM should be fine.

Visa is applied for in person, or sometimes by mail. depends where you apply.
The non-O visa is for volunteers and allows you a stay of 90 days and can be extended in Thailand itself, with the correct paperwork from the charity. This includes a work permit. There is no online application, only in person.
You can buy a mobile with sim in Thailand.
Be aware that many organization that offer volunteer work are only good in one thing: filling the pockets of people who are only in it for the money. Do your research before going along with an organization and paying a lot of money.
Ask if they will help you with a work permit, volunteering without one is punishable with 5 years in jail.

Your mother can apply for a non-O visa, being he mother of a Thai national. A copy of your Thi birth certificate should do the trick.
Once in Thailand your mother can get yearly extensions of stay as your dependent. As your dependent she cannot legally work and will not easily get a work permit. The requirements for that are too high to make that viable for a small business.
-
Since you live in Thailand you probably need a work permit, depending on the exact circumstances.
The exception is for business travelers, coming over to discuss business between their foreign company and a Thai company

You apply at one of the passport offices, I believe the nearest for you is in Bangkok.
The cost is 1,000 baht and they take the photo's themselves. For 65 baht the send the passport to your home by EMS. You will have it within a week.
Passport must be applied for by both parents, only one has to appear, but both must sign the form.

Transfer of stamps is free of charge.
If you paid a fee, i bet you didn't get a receipt.

That seems a good guess, as apperently the municipality is involved.
How old are the children? A Thai ID-card is required from age 7.

If you stay for 90 days you need to report.
You can try to report online or othewise by mail.

If you do nbot want to overstay simply apply for a tourist visa, it only costs (slightly mor than) 1,000 baht in the local currency.
Many consulates allow you to apply by mail.

IDC does not provide the ticket, you have to buy one yourself.
You do pay extra for escorting you to your plane.
-
In Asia you can go to Bali, but there will need a ticket out of Thailand for each entry.
No problems with Mai Sai if entering on a visa.
-
A few days overstay is normally no problem.
A second visa exempt should also be no problem, but also depends on your travel history. If many visa exempt entries they can question you.
-
Are you sure they take approved passport photos? I know they did visa photo's, but told me they were not accepted for a passport.
The Central (or could be a Robinson) just around the corner at the BTS does passport photos and does know the requirements of several countries. Just ask at the electronics department/powerbuy.

Foreigner: must report to immirgation with form TM 28.
Houseowner/Hotel, etc: must report to immigration with form TM 30, but alternatively can report with form TM 30 to the local police station if there is no local immigration office.

In PP it is common to use an agent, speeds up the application process too, as it will take less days to get the visa.
Not so sure on the multiple though. The norm is a single.
-
Hotels and such can apply for a password to submit online.
Normal people will have to send the form by mail (with self addressed envelope) or they can visit the local police station to get the form stamped there (if they know about the requirements).

You will not get a non-O visa till you are 50.
But to bridge till you turn 50 you can leave and re-enter Thailand on a visa exempt entry an get 15 days by land or 30 days by air. You can extend the entry by 30 days. Next you can apply for a conversion to a non-O visa in Thailand or apply fro a non-O visa abroad.

If you have many visa exempt stamps immigration will question you and might advise you that next time you will need a tourist visa to enter.
The way to avoid problems if traveling frequently is to get a tourist visa.
