  1. I personally have no desire to see those muscle shirts or wife-beater T-shirts that some people wear that show people's armpits. But I would think a decent pair of shorts and a polo shirt with a collar should be allowed. Gosh it is the tropics and it is hot and humid on Phuket.

Not shorts, they are revolting looking on a grown man. You would not wear shorts to a job interview, so why to an Immigration office?
The last time I checked, we are in a tropical climate with the really hot weather headed our way.

As a public service and in the hope of avoiding any revulsion on your part, please stay away from my neck of the woods - I am 64 and wear shorts everywhere, everyday, including my morning runs where I suspect I could run you into the ground.

You are getting away from it a bit here, I should have said as I have before, shorts are fine for sporting activities, going to the beach etc. As for running me into the ground, don't be too sure about that, I won't explain why.

I will say it again, IMO, shorts are revolting looking on a grown man, or should I say, dress shorts like cargos.

Possum dear, you seem to be unable to distinguish between genuine tourists extending their stay who should not have to give a flying sh1t about dress code, and, a long term expat or WP employee extending their permission to stay. The former is on holiday without DJ and bow ties , the latter should indeed know better and dress appropriately. The OP regarding the former group is ........ I'm speechless.

  2. I never had my name put in any of my condo blue books. Your name should appear on the chanot, (get a Thai friend to check the entry) this is all you need.

That said there are advantages of having your address registered. I also have a house built on my wife's land which allows me to have my yellow book which is what I use for my address registration.

  3. Me (Brit) my Thai wife and our son (Brit) will visit UK at some point after Songkran. My wife already visited UK 3 years ago for Xmas and New Year and was granted a visa for visit to my family, She is a Government Thai teacher, has plenty of money in the bank where her salary is paid and has confirmed employment. College will certify leave of absence. Return tickets for all three of us no problem. I have lived here for nine years, married for five of those.

Will she need to go all the way to Bangkok to apply for a UK visit visa this time around? Or does past history and supporting evidence count for anything?....... application by post..... maybe?

Thanks for any advise from those with recent experience.

  4. Help please. I am planning a break north of Phuket airport and will happily pay 4000 per night for a good resort.

I am looking for some local knowledge if possible please as I have not been north of the airport before. Just looking for decent recommended restaurants and pubs within reasonable walking distance of the resorts along Mai Khao beach. Premiership football coverage essential so a good pub/sports bar will be very welcome. Is the beach as good as it looks? Anything to avoid? I am not planning to venture south as I have travelled the island before. I just want some peaceful isolation/long walks on the beach and some decent food and beer. Any advice welcome. Thanks

  5. Reason for selling? Name of the building? How much annual charges? Are the condo accounts audited? Is the building management / JP effectively supervised and directed by an elected co owners committee? Is the sinking fund intact?

Just the odd question that springs to mind. If all answers are positive I might swap a similar 5* superbly managed studio in Chiang Mai if you fancy a move north?

  6. I arrived a couple of days ago and had less than 2 hrs to make my flight north from Dom Muang. I never used the Limo Service before (in past 9 years). I was shocked at the 1400 fare, but I was in the car within 2 minutes and we made the check in at DM with time to spare. Good driver and car in mint. After the amount of travelling I had done 30 quid was a bargain. I'll use them again for sure.

  7. Yes, you have been extorted of 1,00 Baht. Good reporting, do not worry about knee jerk comments.

It happens here and there sometime. It's actually not too bad. You had to talk to the senior office when it happened. Now is too late.

Good reporting? And it's actually not too bad?

Cannot concur with either statement. It is easy to report something in a more anonymous manner; why draw attention to ones self? Any extortion is bad!

  8. PlastikbinLina: This process has been described on TV many hundreds of times. You're a relative newcomer so check out the Visas Forum. You seem to be confused between a visa on arrival and a visa exempt entry. They are not the same. You can get up to speed on the terminology by checking the appropriate forum. I'm sure nobody want to rehash the details. smile.png

I think that post was actually about the process of doing two steps towards a retirement extension. First step, change of status from entry stamp or tourist visa to O. Second step, annual retirement extension.

CNX Immigration is saying that a single entry 90 day O-Visa can not be issued by them. This is the first step for retirement by extension. Pattaya and Phuket immigration has had this done to them and now CNX.

Khwaibah -- were you there? Did you stay until the end?

CNX Immigration made no such claim that they can no longer issue a 90-day O visa as part of the "Two-step Conversion Process". There were several slides at the end of the presentation that specifically detailed how to convert a visa-exempt entry or change a visa (like a tourist visa) into a 90-day O visa and then return to obtain a retirement extension.

I translated their Thai slides into English, so I should know. The entire presentation will be on the website of the Chiang Mai Expats Club soon so you'll have a chance to see for yourself.

It would be incredibly useful for you to post a link to that translated PPT when you are able. Thanks.

now PlastikbinLina go sit on the chair at the back of the class

In my house he would be sent to the naughty corner for such impertinence.

  10. It depends on the level of household debt.

No debt =. No gambling. Locally brewed alcohol 40 baht a day for father..... Perhaps .....

5000 baht for someone uneducated who owns there own house is comfortable in the village. Assume rice and veg is grown for own consumption.

Educated girl might be able to find a decent job 10,000 baht (cashier supermarket). Husband labourer 10,000 if he is very lucky. Joint 20,000 income very good, if no debt, but this is rarely the case. Think car, motorbike, bank loan on the property. Also if there are children a good portion might be allocated for education.

If enquiry is about your girl, the family (if she lives with them) expectation will be any income is 'pooled' and expended jointly.

  11. There are plenty of websites and blogs dedicated to Thai amulets and in English, usually run by Singaporeans. amuletforums.com is one, waynedhamma.blogspot.com/ is another. Just do a search on a rare amulet and see what comes up.

Yes, I am aware of those, and did join both, but they are pretty much commercially driven and you rarely get a response to novice questions unless there is a possibility of a sale of one of their own.

Likewise there are some Thai websites in English run by foreign experts, some run from outside of the country, others fronted up by a spouse, or perhaps Thai partnerships. They are ok for basic information on a liitl of the history and I sense they protect their information as it.can easily be copied for commercial gain. Of course it is illegal to export amulets from Thailand unless you have a licence. One or two such companies claim to have such licences.

The answer is to learn Thai and Pali, and if I am serious in my quest I need to extract digit.
