  1. I have started to collect amulets, well Rians (coins) to be more specific. I am not in this for profit, the way I would explain it is a little like stamp collecting for those who thinks I am a nut in an area where fakes are common place. Eventually I intend to catalogue my collection on line with photos and English information about each Rian. I wondered if there were any other like minded collectors in TVF. The average cost of each Rian I hold is 50 baht, though I would (and have) spend several thousand on something of particular interest/significance.

  2. At least they are getting removed. .....before they settle and claim that they are Thais.

If you are referring to the bigotry of the Myanmar govt in refusing to recognise these persecuted citizens of Myanmar as being equally entitled to citizenship as other ethnic groups within the country, let us not forget they have lived there for generations.

Burma is made up of 135 ethnic groups and why the Rohingya are not allowed as one more is most likely down to prejudice and hateful thinking by the Myanmar authorities.

"The Rohingya are a stateless people numbering around 800,000, primarily in western Burma. Although many have lived inside the country for generations, they are not included on the list of 135 official ethnic groups as set out by xenophobic former dictator General Ne Win in the 1982 Citizenship Law"

Cat that was a particularly horrid inhumane comment. If you knew anything about the true plight of the Rohinga you might have finessed your contribution somewhat.

The latest atrocious twist to the persecution can be found here. 1982 official list now reads 2014.

Mark my words this is going to turn into a crisis of genicidal proportions if the UN don't pull their fingers out real quick!

If you bothered to read my post carefully you might notice the quote I used is condemning the bigotry of the Burmese towards the Rohingya.

I am slightly confused as to how you would think otherwise.

The word xenophobic alone should be a clue!

All of what you said was ok, just dated. My post was addressed to Cat and his at least they were getting removed!

  4. The Sinking Fund is subsidising the Common Area Fund ( which pays for the day to day operations of the Condos - staff, electric, insurance etc.etc ). The Common Area fees ( 10 bht p/sq.met ) have NOT been increased in over 20 + years and are amongst the lowest in CM. A small increase ( 10 baht p/sq met ) seems logical.

The Sinking Fund amount can be obtained by visiting the Juristic Manager inside the lobby ).

As for condo owners in arrears - There are a few...with a fair amount of debt outstanding. The current Committee addressed this issue last week....with proposals to send out a Letter giving those owners 90 days to clear their accounts. If they do not - then water and electric can be cut off from those condos.

Other condos that have had NO tennants living in them, and have been repossesed by the bank....the JPM will try to see what the Debt amount is - before proceeding with legal action at the Land Office to reposses those units.

Since there has never been a computerized data base at Riverside for all bills/wages/fees/ etc.etc....the Committee is exploring the best way to establish a modernized method of keeping records - rather than relying on the paper bills currently in use, but very time consuming when trying to retrieve data from past months/years.

Thanks for the reply. 10 baht sqm / month says it all. I wonder if the JPM really knows the extent of what is surviving in the sinking fund? It is a figure that I would want immediately to hand if I was an owner.

I agree with the other poster above; 30 baht sqm seems about the going rate. I should have thought an older building such as yours would need every baht of sinking fund to get ready for certain unforeseen expenditures in the future. What happens when the sinking fund runs out? Building closes?

I appreciate you are trying to fix the mess, but as an investor, I'm out.

    Good luck with your endeavour.

  5. Many thanks for the clarity.

I have a potential interest as I am looking to invest. A pertinent question to ask is what is the value of the sinking fund now compared to the opening balance? How many owners are in arrears with their annual management fees? What action is being taken against any owners in arrears?

  6. They claim they are only fighting to rid the country of "foreign troops" yet every year they murder more of their fellow Afghans/Muslims on purpose here than the coalition does by accident. Not to mention that a large percentage of their fighters are from "foreign countries" themselves.

They hang children after accusing them of being spies.

They rape women, then accuse them of adultery and have them stoned to death.

They strap bombs to mentally handicapped kids and send them into crowded markets before remote detonating them.

They are lowlife, scum criminals using religion to justify their actions. They use fear and terror to force the people into following their particular way of thinking. Any of them that has a weapon can be judge, jury and executioner on the spot. There is no law. There is no justice. There is no freedom.

I have met some decent, hard working, law-abiding Afghans here over the years. People trying to make a living, raise a family and live an honest life. I watch these people trying to cobble together ancient pieces of equipment in the hopes it will run another day and they can earn another $5 ($10 if they're lucky). I watch farmers tending their watermelon fields in 50+ degree (Celsius) heat, camel/goat/sheep herders spending all day in the sun tending their flocks. Guys with university degrees handling the hose on a shit-sucker (honey wagon) truck. Skilled workers (carpenters/welders/etc) sorting garbage in the waste yard for $10 a day because that is the only thing keeping them (and their families) from starving.

But for all those good people, there are plenty more that thrive on crime and corruption and violence. Far easier to use a weapon to take something from somebody than it is to work for it yourself. And hey, if you can use your religion to justify it - less chance of any recriminations. Bonus !

Robbery ? Just claim they were heathens and deserved it !

Rape ? Just claim they were heretics and deserved it !

Murder ? Just claim they were infidels and deserved it !

I've seen/heard so much of this over the last 11 years here that I wonder how they can even believe their own BS. But that's the whole point of keeping their people uneducated and stupid, isn't it ? The dumber they are, the easier it is to convince them of almost anything. In fact, so many of them don't even think what they are doing is criminal, because they've been told that everything they do is for the glory of their god. When you can justify any action by claiming your god approves it, then anything is acceptable.

Really not much different that the christians during the middle ages, and during the periods of "colonization" when emissaries of the various religious sects would forcibly convert the "heathens" they encountered in the new lands. Little things like the Spanish Inquisition and Salem Witch trials are just other examples of religious extremism carried out by christians during a period when religious leaders held near ultimate power over the people and could even force kings to do their bidding.

Best post of the day by far!

  7. There is a mid sized Tesco Lotus in Ao Nang at the head of the main road that leads to the beach near the intersection of a road that leads to Krabi Town (as it is referred to). I can send you Google Map/Earth coordinates if you need them. Every tuk tuk, song thaew and taxi driver knows how to find it.

In Krabi Town - there are the large mini mall size Big C and Tesco Lotus on the Route 4 not too far from the Krabi Airport. There is also a Makro - standard size on Route 4 leading to Phuket.

I have Google Earth / Google Map coordinates for these... I posted them on Thaivisa Forums ... I'll go find them and post a link ...

There are other shops - local 'Mom and Pop' shops that have foods and general merchandise for families.

The average distance to the places in Krabi Town - from Ao Nang would be about 22 kilometers - give or take. I ride my rented motorbike there quite often.

The mid size one locally in your first para would be perfect. If you have directions (or a landmark) to that I would be grateful. Many thanks.

Also typical cost of a taxi? How are the taxi's? Are they metered? Well regulated? Thanks.

    Tesco Lotus, Ao Nang, Krabi

    Latitude 8° 2'24.76"N Longitude 98°50'7.66"E (8° 2'24.76"N, 98°50'7.66"E)

There are sedan taxis that are metered - but few of them. There are many Song Thaews of various colors and sizes, There are many side car Tuk Tuks .... typical charges for inside Ao Nang - about 40 Baht. from any particular place to another ... not necessarily from one extreme end to the other. A Taxi from Ao Nang to Krabi Airport is 500 Baht. There are Song Thaews that go there too for fairly cheap... There is a big white bus - not extremely big - but a real bus that runs all day into the evening about every hour or so - making many stops on the Ao Nang Tourist Road leading to the Beach Road... (not officials names). These buses go to Krabi Town - making various stops - turns around at the Airport and comes back ... The tour shops have complete info of various types of transportation and bus stops... Actually it is all quite easy ... Plus you can always rent a motorcycle by the day, week and month .... I rent mine at a decent place for 3000 a month with insurance - no license needed - it is a tourist area and they don't care... There are rip offs in renting motorcycles so watch out - meaning high charges -- and some still demand holding passports - DON'T DO IT... Others don't make this illegal demand.

Really helpful JD, very much appreciated.

  8. It is hard to find a restaurant in Ao Nang that does not claim to serve pizza. I just came from there and it was a running joke. As for good ones, who knows? You have a Thai wife, so what's the problem? She will be able to suss out the good Thai food immediately. A high chair might be an issues outside of a tourist resort hotel.

Thanks for the reply. The reason for the post was to try and ensure I am not embroiled in the running joke as you have described. There is no problem. My wife speaks near perfect English, so she can suss out a good deal if she needs too. You might be surprised about the availability of high chairs if you ask advice in advance.

So do you have any recommendations at all from your visit? Or places to definitely avoid? Advice on thus would be appreciated.
