  1. Kanchanaburi police chief tells entertainment venues, guides to care drunk tourists

    The Nation

Kanchanaburi Pol Maj Gen Kamolsanti Klubutr Sunday told entertainment venue operators and tourist guides to take special care of tourists who appeared drunk following a report that a 19-year-old Britist tourist was raped last week while she was drunk.

Kamolsanti said anyone, who spot a drunk female tourist, can call 191 and 1155 to alert police to take the tourist to her hotel.

Do people not realise that the police are immune to the law? This is like the wolf looking after the sheep...

  2. For all of you that say 5,000 baht isn't a lot, I agree it isn't if you have it. This guy was found in a room on Soi Khao Noi, which is hardly the high end of town to live in. His monthly rent and living expenses may well have been 5,000 baht and he may've been counting on getting it back to pay his rent and utilities. By not having this money it can be a real game changer for some people, this is the type of person hides away in a less than salubrious 'loom', scraping an existence from what little resources they may have.

  3. Won't it be fun when they get around to the companies that own land and rent it to their farang minority shareholders?

Never understood the mentality of not allowing some groups of foreigners (like say retirees) to own a limited amount of land, say a maximum of 1 Rai or even only 100 Wah would suffice. This would obviously be only for personal residence with tax penalties if sold within say 3 or 5 years to discourage property speculators misusing such a system. This would avoid a lot of these problems with Thai nominee shareholders being used and be good for Thailand by encouraging more genuine falang retirees to move here and bring in of course regular foreign currency.

Maybe as we now at last have an intelligent open minded and progressive Government (shows us all how sometimes democracy does not actually work as well), they may well read our TVF threads here on this issue and consider all the implications of making such a sensible move and actually bring in such legislation to allow a restricted and limited foreign land ownership for those who would qualify.

Wouldn't you think a property tax like 'council tax' would be a better way to handle it? All foreigners with a house or condo in company name would pay an annual fee based on the land office valuation of the property, it wouldn't be anything like UK taxes in comparison. I wouldn't mind paying an annual fee if it meant I could legally own a property and the money raised could go towards improvements in Thailand, such as street cleaning, garbage collection and waste management, rounding up soi dogs and even contributing to the police salaries, which may reduce the corruption of them having to make up Mickey Mouse traffic offences towards the end of the month just to cover their salaries. This could generate a huge amount of revenue for the economy and I'm surprised it's not been considered, as there never usually too slow to spot a money making idea.

  4. To me it appears that many Thai people agree with what most westerners complain about, certainly Gen. Prayuth is making some huge changes in which the country is being run, the latest being no double standards with regards to the law and it's enforcement. How many times have you read on here 'money talks, people walk'? There are right and wrong ways to do everything and I doubt if Thailand wants to be seen as an inferior, incapable and incompetent neighbour when the ASEAN community comes into effect next year.

  5. I love all these comments about sex tourism in Pattaya. Don't people realise that the main visitors to Pattaya are Chinese and Russian and these nationalities are not usually seen in beer bars or go-go bars, they're in Pattaya for other reasons. Of course there is sex tourism, the same as there is in Bangkok where the "Holier than though" preach from, but the vast demographic are not here to get their rocks off.

  6. I would t class Thailand as third world, it's an emerging market. Just look at all the luxury cars on the roads which cost over twice as much here than in the 'civilised world'. Supply and demand dictates prices, what do you think the land prices were in Pattaya when it was just a sleepy fishing village? Land has tripled in many places in the last 5 years. It's not rocket science really.

  7. He does look a dumb pratt, almost like a Simpsons character in appearance. Well done to the police for letting a lunatic like this with more money than sense back on the roads. I can't believe the idiocy of Thai drivers with absolutely no driving accumen or intelligence, driving a lethal weapon. I have never known an entire race to be so slow off the traffic lights yet when they've woken up they put to push into every conceivable gap or race like Lewis Hamilton. Question, I know some motorcyclists dont turn their lights on their motorbikes because they think it saves them fuel. Do motorists believe that moving at a snails pace from the traffic lights also saves them fuel? If this is the case than they are the biggest bunch of skinflints ever. I could go on all day about their driving habits and general lack of courtesy for other road users, such a self righteous race who think they deserve everything and give nothing. Is it also considered a loss of face to pull over for a faster moving vehicle? Why do they hog the fast lane and never pull over? The quickest way to get anywhere is by using the slow lane I find. Rant over and RIP to the BiB, your families have already been bought.

  8. I spoke to my wife about this, why do Thais think if a car is hit by a motorcycle the car driver is at fault,is this why the never look when turning out of side streets,'car have to care'she tells me,this is plain crazy.

It's because the car driver is considered to have more money than the motorcyclist. You'll always find if you're driving a car and have an accident with a bike and the BiB turn up, they'll always say "He no money, you pay". The insurance companies always say as soon as you have an accident to call them and they will have a representative come to the scene of the accident and argue on your behalf. Even if you've been drinking alcohol they will tell the police you have to go to hospital for checks to avoid being taken to the police station for booze testing. They're really very helpful and go to great lengths to avoid paying third party costs if they can avoid it.

  9. Wait... so if a Thai runs someone down on a bicycle or motorbike and kills them (which is practically a daily occurrence), it's ok... som nom nah...shouldn't have been on the road. But when a foreigner does it, let's riot.

    A) MOST of these accidents are due to negligence and regardless of where they're from, there should be stiff penalties for reckless/careless driving (but police are lazy and easily bought so, this will never happen).

cool.png This 'mob' is probably more about a long ongoing irritation with Russian tourists (or perhaps tourists in general) than this particular incident. Perhaps the police should enforce laws better to keep tourists in line (Oh yeah...forgot, they're useless).

    C) Wear a <removed> helmet. I'm still astonished when I see three drunk idiots flying down the road on one scooter, no helmets and all over the road. They crash, they die, nobody cares. If only the police..... nevermind.

Basically they hate ALL farangs and just see them as a means to make money, which is why they tolerate us being here. When they can't make money out of a situation or feel cheated they turn on the hand that generally feeds them. They intimidate in large mobs to extort money, rather than letting the insurance companies do their job of paying compensation.

  10. Geez, slow day in the Thai-bashing tribe? So you gotta find something to support your tired rhetoric? If you've been following the news, you'll know that they've got a gazillion leads but nothing concrete. You'd prefer that the Thai gov muddy the waters even more? How about go back to the barstool and let the professionals do their jobs.

It seems that most of the guys posting here who's only accomplishment was getting old and getting a pension to stay in Thailand with probably almost no real formal education themselves love to critisise the Thais.

Sure there are a lot of dumb uneducated Thais but to think that Thailand has no experts and professionals gets a bit old. There are guys and girls that are super bright just like everywhere else. You just don't encounter them much but they are here.

Its quite arrogant to think that you or others are always better but seems to be the norm for foreigners that are not too happy with their own life and need to put Thais down and act like they are so much better, just to stay happy.

Many of the foreigners in Thailand don't impress me at all usually damaged goods or oddballs.

Are you trying to tell me Thais don't look down on foreigners in every respect? They seriously believe they are superior in everyway to any other nation or individual. They are basically taught from school that nothing outside Thailand matters, which is why we have the xenophobic attitude from so many. Face facts, they'd rather not have us here, but put up with us begrudgingly.

Yawn wonder if you ever lived here for a serious time. There might be some Thais like that but in general I would say no what you are saying is rubish and most here would agree.

Lived and worked here 10 years
