  1. In your opinion:

Do farangs shower less often that Thais and other Asians?

Or is that just a "racist" Thai/Asian belief about farangs?

    Fact or fallacy? :D

And... does it matter at all? :o

Some westerners do only shower one time day or less. It does matter. Westerners do sweat copious amounts, I know I do, and some smell quite bad because of this. Luckily I do not. My thirak confirms this.

Many times labourers and farm people in Europe smell of rank already at 7AM.

I used to live in The Netherlands and noticed that although most people shpower in the morning, they keep wearing the same unwashed and old-sweat clothes.

I shower at least two times a day here. I want to.

    And, it does matter.

Racist belief? Dunno. Never heard any Thais mention it, but many stereotypes are based on something.

Have a whiff of Arabs, Pakistanis or Indians who don t shower. Ooo boy... :D

  2. I am looking at buying a new car and I am undecided between the Corolla or a Mazda 3.

The Corolla seems to be better than the Vios.

    Any thoughts

    Thanks

I got a 2002 Altis 1.8 vvt-i (red i) as a rental. Goes like stink. Fuel consumption on 91 benzin is approx: 440-550km on 36-40 liters.

Cruising at 140-150 is no problem. :o

The handling and brakes are quite good too. I would get the sport package if this means a lower and stiffer ride.

  3. I hope you picked up GH's touch of sarcasm :o

I hope so, it was as subtle as a sledge hammer,

Totally off topic, but your Avatar avi gif is the funniest one I have EVER seen. <deleted> me, my back still hurts from laughing. :D:D Couldn't stop...

Re. sin sod, the OP should have included a little more info regarding the situation. Status of her family, her age, his age, married before or not, kids, education, looks (yes, that is what we came here for) etc.

I have my doubts about paying sin sod, but I know that my fianceé's parents will not ask for it. They are just happy that their (eldest) daugther has found a man that loves her and that she loves him. I will GIVE sin sod if she wishes it. You dont PAY sin sod. You don't buy her, you show your appreciation for her parents' efforts in raising a charming woman. And for them to gain face, of course. Usually you get some or all back.

Her dad is a retired cop and her mom a teacher. They cannot afford a big wedding party. They NEVER ask for money.

I have offered to help, but she adamantly refuses. She says, it is up to my sisters and I to help our parents. Her dad is a cool guy and respected in his town. We went shooting once. Lots of fun. Her mom is very sweet and has a beautiful smile.

I even managed to get my parents to come here and ask for permission for us to marry next year. That really made them happy. Her parents and mine. Wonderful evening at the Crystal Grill. Good food there, BTW.

And I am not some old c... eeehm guy with a 20something Isaan(bar)girl from the sticks. We are both in our thirties. 2 years difference.

So if some people bothered to learn what sin sod really is for, we would not get this crap all the time. Of course, there is one born every minute and every hour there is a fresh flight from Farangland.

If you get yourself a bargirl you pay ZERO(sin sod that is)! You already pay for the rest, right? I make special price for you, extra expensive, OK mai?

  4. What exactly do you plan to import?

    -Various silicone hoses,

    -Brakes upgrade,

    -FMIC,

    -HO coil kit

    -Various sensors

    etc.

Other than the brake upgrade the hoses, sensors and MSD ignition, etc.

Don't you have someone that can buy for you and ship to you?

Just declare it to be like $50.

    The brake discs about $100

    If Brembo...

Taxes wouldn't be more than 30%. The airfreight would cost more.

However if not in a hurry you can ship them by sea but you will pay for other various charges like THC, document fees, etc.

You never declare the whole retail value.

I am not american so I do not know anybody in the US.

The site I want to order from is www.034motorsport.com

All kinds of yummy Audi parts there, especially for the 5 cylinder.

The brakes are not Brembo but Porsche. Probably second hand, but refurbished.

How do I declare the value? Do I not need to show some receipts/documents from FedEx or similar?

I doubt the boys in the US will forge the papers for me.

If I can just show up at the Thai Customs (is that where I pick the stuff up?) and tell them its worth $250 (to make it sound realistic) and then add some "dont check the actual value or open the boxes fee", would that work? :o

  5. I just bought my parts through ebay and sent them to my address. Sometimes I get charged like 30% sometimes I don't. Depends on the value declared.

What value is that? The price you paid on ebay or whatever customs feels like is the price?

Have discovered what amount is the threshold?

If you could be more specific, I would really appreciate it.

  6. Hi guys,

I have been trying to find out what the taxes are on importing car parts to Thailand, but I cannot find any useful info here. I do not want to import a car to Thailand.

Everybody says dont do it, but import car parts because that is cheaper/lower risk.

So, what are the rates on engine parts, chassis parts? I have a WP and visa.

I am planning on buying a '96 Audi S6 automatic (I cannot find a manual) and buying aftermarket parts online from the USA to install this on car. I have found a good place for the work to be done through audiclubthailand.com.

Went for a visit and explained my plan of action. He can do it.

    Parts on the list:

    -Various silicone hoses,

    -Brakes upgrade,

    -FMIC,

    -HO coil kit

    -Various sensors

    etc.

Has anybody done this? I was informed by the Audi guy that OEM parts are imported and then marked up 200% by the dealers!

So, what are the taxes on this?

    Thanks in advance.

  7. The new ALTIS does look allright. I particularly like the "muscular" back. cough.

Right now, I have a 6 year old, 185k, Altis 1.8e auto (rental). The automatic whines alittle when driving slowly, but it is a very nice car, smooth cruising, comfortable, good A/C and not underpowered. Its got an ECT power button for the trans, meaning it upshifts at 6000 under WOT and reacts quicker to your rightfoot. Mine's a bit heavy....

Cruising at 140-150 on the Bang Na-Trat is noooo problem. Fuel consumption: about 440-450km per fill up, about 36 to 38 ltrs.

My fiancee is scared when I drive :D

I shall not start a rant on motosais

  8. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    http://www.brightgreen.us/lubedev/smartgas/ultra5.htm

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good mixes given in OPTG (ounces per ten gallons):

    1. diesel: 2-5 acetone.

    2. gasoline: 3 xylene and 3 acetone

    3. gasoline: 10 acetone and 10 xylene and 10 diesel fuel

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Claims 3 to 6 MPG boost. I haven't tried. Don't know availability of xylene but acetone is a nail varnish remover; have to be careful of quality/additives though. Fuel quality is another important issue. In the UK, Tesco's is absolute crap, Texaco's is so-so, Total is the very best (Mazda 2, 1400 cc, feels like it has an extra 200 cc). Don't know if quality varies much in Thailand but it's huge in the UK.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The claims are BS. Acetone will actually INCREASE your fuel consumption.

You have companies that try to sell you pills to put in your fuel tank in order to increase milage. Its all b*llocks.

Fuel Freedom International is one of these companies. They have managed to sucker my father-in-law to sell this stuff.

  9. Maybe a little wind is nice in Thailand when its hot, but over here in the Netherlands, when it gets stormy and blustry outside, I get grumpy and irritable. Especially if I am outside and get strong gusts (usually accompanied by rain) from every direction. Also have a slight headache when the low pressure zone passes by.

Maddening wind, it does exist... :o

  10. Hi everybody,

I will be working in the Surasak area starting next month for at least 6 months. I would like to find a clean and quiet service apartment in the area. My budget will be approx. 20-25k a month. Is this realistic? Not interested staying in the J-town places. I will not need much space. 35m2 is plenty.

I have been looking around a little, but cannot really find anything.

Does anybody have experiences or recommendations for this area?

    Thanks.

  11. Actually, the group is a French owned engineering multinational. It has several branch offices around the world. I work for the Dutch one. There is also one in BKK, but I will not be transferring to that office. I will still be formally employed by my company. Our branch office/company does not have a legal business entity in Thailand. That is the tricky part.

The Thai branch don't really want to have to apply for the visa and WP, even if my office will pay for everything. They do a whole batch for the year and have some sort of max quota.

-Do get a non-immi B or O before the WP?

My place of work will be one of our suppliers. I am an expediter so I will be monitoring work, check that schedules are met and report to the procurement dept. back in The Netherlands. If we are not there on the workshop floor kicking their asses, we will not get our stuff on time.

I am not taking a Thai's job. I will be a company rep.

Thing is, it seems as though the ball is up in the air right now. I just want to know how long this will take organize. MY manager wants me to go middle of next month.

-Can it be done that quick? Getting the papers for the visa is no problem, but the question is who needs to apply for this.

And I want to tell my Jaoying when I am coming :o

  12. Does anybody now about this matter?:

Our group has a Thai branch office and they told my HR people that the Thai company (Italian owned) will need to apply for the WP and visa.

    -Is this correct?

I will not be working for the Thai company, but it will be my place of daily activities. The dutch company I work for will pay my salary and allowances. I would really appreciate some clarification on this.

  13. The tigers are fine, they are tigers, they need abit of a kick up the back side to toughen up abit. When I was there I was going to give the big tiger a spinning bird kick but I was just too scared to do it.

    Maybe next time

Hey its Guido Hatzis! Do you still burn your shoulder on the ceiling light when you turn over in bed? :o

    How's the plumbing job?

  14. This is quite shocking! I was at the Tiger Temple in May 2006. I saw none of this alledged abuse. I might have been taken in by the NG docus, but I did not really see anything that I would consider inappropriate.

The cages were small and Saengtawan is in a cage when the touros are there since she apparently is not suitable to be around large groups. I enjoyed it very much, but it was certainly touristy and busy. Groups of about 50.

I have heard people say that the tigers are drugged, but we were informed that they only lead the tigers down to the gorge after they have been fed. Acharn Poosit led one of the large ones himself and there was no prodding or pulling on the chain. The tiger was maybe 3 times his weight. The tiger was curious of its surroundings and was smelling objects it came across. It was dam_n hot that day and at 2PM that gorge it was very hot. And the tigers were panting in the shade. The adolecents were playing in the pool down the end. Clearly not drugged. But were too playful for interaction with the touros.

I am very sad if these accusations are true. I can understand if they trade with some place in Laos in order to mix up the bloodlines in order to avoid inbreeding. Lats time I checked, they had 17 tigers, Heard rumours of now being 23?

This place must be doing some good, chai mai? They have finished the Tiger Island/Park by now I think. That must be something. And the squirting on the tigers with some fluid, THAT's abuse? Squirting someone with a watergun is hardly abuse. Tigers like water.

And hitting a 200kg+ tiger without repercusions? yeah right.

I dont understand it. I really hope the CWI is wrong or overreacting.

  15. Hi everybody,

I have been doing some looking around here to find answers, but cannot seem to find any matching my situation.

    This is the situation:

My dutch employer is sending me to Thailand for a minimum of 6 months, and possibly one year with a possiblity for longer, in order to monitor and expedite a couple of large orders we got running at a Thai workshop in Sri Racha. I will be placed there in-plant, but will remain an employee of the Dutch company. I will receive my Dutch salary on my Dutch bank account, as usual. I will get some allowances for housing and such too. This will be taxed in Thailand apparently.

Our group has a Thai branch and they told our HR people that the Thai company (Italian owned) will need to apply for the WP.

    -Is this right?

    Also;

-What documents do I need to provide our HR dept / Thai Embassy for this WP?

-What is the average processing time for this WP?

-What type of visa will this be? (ie. Non-immi B?)

-Do I have to do 90day reporting?

Furthermore, my company is also paying for moving some of my stuff with me. I will bring limited furnture and such and it will be done by a reputable relocation company. I have a couple of OPENED single malt whiskeys that I want to bring. I know that the limit is 1 litre for tax-free stuff, but do these opened bottles count?

-What is the chance that Thai Customs will go through all my personal effects? Not planning bring contraband, of course :o

The plan my company has now is for me to start there mid-July. Is this feasible?

I am very excited about this, of course, because I have been working on joining my Jaoying Suay for some time. :D

    Khap khun khap :D

  16. Couple of weeks ago I was on Samet with my TGF.

Lots of mozzies there and got bitten a fair amount. Some bites were very itchy, but others not.

However, my GF had some cream you can buy at 7/11. It comes in a pink satchel and it has some Thai abbreviation on it and "15". I forget what the name is. It works a charm on us! It smells nice, you can apply it anywhere and it worked very well.

One minute, inundation, after application, gone.

One thing about cold countries (Norway): No mozzies when cold, but man, you go into the bush in summer, you eaten alive.

Boggy country is the worst, of course.

BTW, any incidence of dengue in Sri Racha/Chonburi or the Lat Phrao area in BKK?

  17. Sawat dii khap everybody,

EvilDrDSomkid here. Wanted to use just Somkid, but it was taken.

Will be relocating to LOS next month sometime and I have already found a lot of good tips and interesting reading here.

I especially enjoyed the GOM thread. :o

I am in the age demogr 35-40, scando, and engaged to a lovely Thai woman.

Can't wait to move out there. I have the luck that my company is sending me!

    Chohk dee khap.
