August 2004. Landed at DM and was also quite surprised at seeing a golf course adjacent to the runway.
Then the enormous lines at Immigration. There was a planeload of Eastern European touros who had not filled out their immi cards and ALL did it right at the desk. I was fuming.
Then running through the tunnels to the domestic terminal, no aircon, so sweating like a pig, to buy thickets for Samui for next day. We could only get on the 6AM flight.
Spent the night at KSR getting seriously pissed with my mate. We did not get the agreed wakeup call at 4AM, but I groggly woke up at 5 and we packed our stuff in 1 minute, ran down to reception to check out, jump into a taxi, tell hum to haul ass to the domestic terminal.
On the way there, I remembered one of the few words I had learned from the LP: YUT! The guy finally stopped, I leaned out the door, spewed out the can of Coke I had just drunk and told him to GO! My mate just stared at me and asked, what did you say to the taxidriver? You already speak Thai? Glad I bothered to learn some.
Still kicking myself about that. I lost my favorite sunnies in that taxi
Got to the check in desk at 5:50, begged the cute stewardesses: Can we please get the flight? No problem sir, we wait youuuu. Sweet.
I am never drinking a caipirinha from some VW bus cocktail bar again.
I was dehydrated for a week after that on KPN. One of the best vacations ever. By the 3rd day I had a serious case of Jasmine fever. It never went away...

Why do farangs do that funny invisible walk, posture, starey things and are more focused on ignoring you than acknowledging you with a nod or hello! when walking towards another farang in an un touristy area?
It has happend countless times too me but i have just had it happen while walking back home and have remembered to ask about it.
I have just passed another farang and we were walking towards each other for over 100 yds and as we got closer it was quite obvious he was doing the i cannot see you walk... ... i looked, nodded and said hello as we passed while he scratched his ear to avoid making contact....
why do people feel the need to do this?
I cannot recall whether this has happened to me yet. However, there area I live in BKK is very low on westerners. So if I see one, I get disappointed, because he has shattered my illusion that I am the ONLY westerner in this here hood
There is one guy in my building, I think, but his appearance does not invite me to converse with him. Kinda creepy looking.
The neighborhood of my wife's business has an even lower incidence of westerners. I still get stared at, but most people in that part of the soi know who I am now. The local Thai grapevine, I am sure the people who live in similar circumstances have experienced this.
The wife gets comments or questions about seeing you somewhere.
I have noticed that even I now stare if I see tourists. They are so tall and white and fat and ....

I miss Mangosauce, too. It was the first Thailand oriented site I ran into with subjects pertaining to my interests at that time. Probably had something to do with the search terms I used.
hehe. The posts were hilarious
It was also one of the battlegrounds here the Stick vs. John Galt/Keith Summers war was fought.
It was through this site that I found out about Stickman and I think I heard about Schoocher there, too. Schooch is down, too.
Unfortunately, Dave pulled the plug on his site a few months after I found it.
I even found a vid on Youtube from a Thai woman who misses MG. Like she said: I loved reading the stories, so I can know what you guys are up to over here.
Anybody else seen it?

thanks for the opportunity to ask
Go to Wat Pho and ask. But to be quite honest, I think you are about to be scammed.
-
Wait.
Let me get this straight. You are a student, you are paying a whopping 120k (iso a measly 100k) a month for a service apartment AND you expect honesty in Thailand?
You are in the wrong part of the world.
-
87000 a MONTH? Cripes

Beauty mate...

You still have not provided us with any backup for the 99.9% as I requested following your request what generalizations people disagreed with.

How, how can something so stunningly beautiful be like this?? How?
This thread still lacks pics.
And I am being honest - is she a stunner or are you blinded? Can we help you overcome this by finding 10 others of same grade?
Yeah!!! hear hear, come on magic, shows who (or what) you are willing to suffer for.

Is Texpat even a Yank?I was being sarcastic, and, please stop wearing that hat, you're making us all look stupid.I wouldn't call somebody from Texas a Yank. That is asking for trouble.

*pssst JT, Texas is in the south of the US*

holy smokes... last night and today had the mother of all fights..
She made me think she was actually psychotic in with her words... wow.. the sh%t hit the fan big time..
cus i haven't engaged yet. In her nonsensical chatter, she actaully said she would kill me if she could get away with it, then took shots at my family, and freinds..
I really think she needs pro help. She cannot control her rage. I feel bad for her.
How, how can something so stunningly beautiful be like this?? How?
magic, if you have any stuff in her apartment, get it and leave now.
Leave the key behind, get to your own place pronto, pack up and move somewhere else.
If she really is that unstable, she might hurt you very badly.
Its all down hill from here. Do you really expect it will get better?
You have had plenty of advice now on what to do.
DO IT! Why would you want to prolong this nightmare?
Why do you keep going on about how good she is in bed and how pretty she is?
Leave...

daveA, if you are still mobile, get your ass to a good hospital NOW!
If you have been stung by THE box jelly fish, you are most likely in serious trouble.
-
which generalizations do you disagree with?
To start with, your statement that 99.9% of sex workers have multiple STDs. Please give some serious back up of this alleged "fact".
I do not find your calculations at all helpful. Mind you, I am not a punter. Your attempted emotional blackmail, ie. why are you endangering your children, is not helpful either.
However, the bottom line is going bareback is a crapgame all the time.

I was never much of a Bob Marley fan to begin with. Not that his music was "bad" or anything, but it just never resonated with me.
However, it seems that nowadays, everywhere you go on the beach you hear Bob. The first hundred or so times you hear Buffalo Soldier or Get Up, Stand Up, etal, you think: "Well, they've played the hel_l out of that."
But it just goes on and on and on....
It's like someone has decided to play Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer every day on the beach. It's maddening.
I propose a moratorium on Bob Marley music in Samui for at least the next 20 years. Actually, I'd like to ban his music forever, but that seems slightly harsh.
Everyone agrees with me, right?
I'm with you. They have been playing Bob to death for years now. Not only on Samui, but also on Phangan.
Some of my mates and I are also sick of hearing Bob M all the f*cking time and we don't even live on Samui.
I'd rather be listening to Jintara Poonlap. I'm not sick of her music.
Fantastic voice. Eventhough I cannot understand most of what she sings, especially if its Isaan dialect, some of her songs do bring a tear...
Not that overly sweet luk thung stuff though.

You could offer the labyboys badges with " I am 53% woman".

Café Uno rocks! Good coffee and good bread.
The owner can look a bit intimidating, but is a good guy. His wife is not bad looking either.
The staff was also quite appealing
There was girl there called Bew or something. Very sweet.
The girls are NOT available for take out.

Hey guys, thanks for the tip! I'll try this one soon.

I am just wondering if we where to engage, & we later decide that it isn't working, would this be devistating to her and her Thai family?
We have not actually lived together for more than a 5 days at a time..
Mate, she will go ballistic. She will lose all her invested time and effort and will lose a lot of face and so will her family.
If you are still in doubt, that means you should not do it.
If you break up now, it will not be pretty, but the potential fallout will be less than after engagement.
Living together unmarried is still frowned upon by most Thai parents.

I grew up with Ikea. I like Ikea, too. The missus also likes Ikea and we spoke about why Ikea was not in Thailand.
In fact, there are Ikea pieces in Thailand already. I brought my Ikea dining table set, Ikea bed and Ikea couch to Thailand.
I did ask her: Do you think that Thai people will like to assemble their furniture themselves?
She said: Are you saying Thai people are stupid?
Eeerm, well, no but eeerrmm... you get the picture.
I tried to explain that the kind of people who would like to buy (afford) Ikea style things, would not be the kind of people who would WANT to assemble stuff.
But really, first time we went to Index, it was just like walking into an Ikea shøp. Even the pricetags look like Ikea, <deleted>.

Try to get them to say 'toothbrush' for a laugh.
We just make it into a running gag once we find out what is being said.
The crap vs crab thing for example. Comes out as: clap, of course.
She: "Thirak, my parents have so mush clap in their house, I do not like it. Sokopok mak.
I hate clap! Why do thai people want a lot of clap etcetc"
That is true, <deleted> do they always buy all this Pokemon sh*t?
Later:
Thirak , I think I would like to have clap today.
Me: (big kuanteen smile) But you don't like clap .
Thirak: Yes I do. I love clap.
Me. You said to me you don't like clap.
Thirak: Huh?
Me: You don't like clap. You hate it.
Thirak: Ooooh you so kuanteen. Why you tease me?
giggle giggle.

If my wife and /or I would tip everytime I took a taxi that would push the taxi expense by 10% a month. That's 400-500 extra. Not happening. Besides, most taxis suck or stink.
In restaurants, I tip IF the service AND food has been good. Had enough occasions that was not the case. Be honest, the saying : I have had the worst service and the best service of my life in the same country, Thailand, still stands.
One so-called American custom which has come in very strong is that f*cking 10% service charge. If I see that, no tip.
I hardly drink in bars, so no tip there either.
My wife and I usually go for massage at the same place. I do usually tip both massage women, because paying 200 baht for a 1hour and 45 minutes of excellent massage is not right. So, 25 or 50 each.
Yes, I am European. Let's NOT turn this thread in to a EU vs. US battle about who is best. If USAians want to tip exorbitantly, let them.
-
Bart, sorry to hijack your thread.
Like Bart I am also looking to find steady work again in Thailand. Unlike him, I DO wish to work in the Oil & Gas and Petro industry.
Anybody here work for a Oil & Gas and/or Petro company? I have CUEL and Foster Wheeler on my list to apply to.
Any other outfits I should approach?
Intro letter and resume available upon PM request. My experience lies in materials management of structural steel and piping.
Veel succes Bart.

would you consider this beach ot be the best in koh phangan? and if not which beach would you pick?
are there decent food options near haad salad?
which resort has the best vibe there?
Haad Yao on the east side is a beautiful beach. Thong Nai Pan is a beautiful beach. Than Sadet takes my vote for place with the most relaxed location and a lovely beach. All of these beaches have deep water for swimming whereas Haad Salad is fairly shallow and can be rocky as the reef is fairly close to shore.
sbk, shhhhht. Don't let this become known.
I love Sadet, too. Had my eyes on Yao east for years, but every time I am on KPN its deserted. Lets keep it that way.

someone remind me what this thread was originally about
Eh yeah, its gone a bit offtopic. Something about some North american characters declaiming uncalled for opinions on a certain street in Banglampoo.
Punk in drublic, as it were.
The Special I Can See You But Will Ignore You Walk

CC of me? Hardly. Me: 36. Him: Retired, and: socks, sandals and prerequisite sticky shirt.
The touros I see at Emporium or Siam Sq. Do you say hello to the touros on the BTS?
But, at Fortune why would I say hello to a farang?
Maybe I am one of those people that do the "ignoring you" routine.
Oh the horror...
