  1. Because they are doing what they believe is best for the U.S. economy.

giggle.gif doing what they believe is best for the owners of the Federal reserve is more like itrolleyes.gif

Now you are just being silly.

Who owns the Federal Reserve? "The Federal Reserve System fulfills its public mission as an independent entity within government. It is not "owned" by anyone and is not a private, profit-making institution."

  2. “Thai Economy Is Sagging, and So Are Thai Spirits” (NY Times article "Memo From Thailand", Nov. 30) did not include facts that contradict this critical portrayal of Thailand’s economy, said Ambassador Pisan Manawapat in the NY Times opinion page on Dec 7.

How are we supposed to know what the Honorable Ambassador is talking about since the NY Times article that he is criticizing has been banned from publication in Thailand?

  3. In April this year we had the 36th International Motor Show and now we have the 32nd. Did they drive a little too fast in a DeLorean?

I'm a little confused on that too. While the TV headline refers to this auto show as the "Bangkok" Auto Show, I believe it is really the Thailand International Motor Show. The Bangkok International Motor Show is scheduled for March 23rd till April 3rd, 2016.

  4. From the New York Times: "The woman involved in the shootings in San Bernardino, Calif., on Wednesday passed through two rounds of criminal and national security background checks as she obtained a “fiancé visa” and later a resident green card to live in the United States, federal officials said.

The information that Ms. Malik came to live in this country legally has heightened concern about security reviews in the immigration system. It has also renewed a tense debate in Washington, particularly after the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris provoked a furor in Congress and among state governments about the vetting of refugees from Syria and Iraq."
I think that it goes without saying that for the foreseeable future, there will be very few visas issued for travel to the U.S. - for all nationalities.
  5. I think you made my point. When no parking is available it doesn't give you permission to double park. You, as you stated, didn't double park--you circled for 2 hours instead of double parking and blocking traffic. I would have done the same thing--circled--rather than being a rude, inconsiderate, selfish, law-breaking driver. And, next time I would remember there is no parking available at the hospital and my options are circling or using a taxi. There certainly are occasional emergency double parking situations but the vast majority I see in Pattaya are inconsiderate people double parking in front of shops to run in and do some shopping--and often when a parking space is available not too far down the street.

What would you have done if you were in the car by yourself?

One idea to ease the parking problem would be to construct parking structures outside of the city at the end of the BTS lines. If people could park there inexpensively with the safety of their car guaranteed, they could just take the BTS into the city and help relieve the parking and traffic congestion.

  6. What utter rot, Utley. So, if there's no place to park that gives you permission to double park? With that logic, gee, I'm out of money so I guess it's ok to rob a bank. If there's no place to park, you don't park! Duh! Go somewhere else. It's likely there IS a place to park down the street but it seems lots of drivers don't want to walk a few feet. I don't know how many times I've seen drivers double parking and there's an open space available nearby, but maybe not RIGHT in front of where they want to stop. I liked the comment of the poster who said crush the cars into small packages and give them back to the drivers. Do that and people might sit up and take notice. A nice, big fine on top of the package would be lovely, too.

The point is that you can't stop people behaving in a certain way without giving them alternatives. It's convenient to think that all people who double park are doing so because they are lazy and rude but we both know that is not 100% true. I once took my wife to the Rajavithi Hospital near Victory Monument and there was absolutely no place to park. She went in for her appointment by herself while I circled the area slowly for 2 hours. There was not a parking space to be had.

  7. Most "western" vegetables can be planted in Oct or Nov when the weather starts to cool down. If you look in the stores locally such as Lotus, you will only find seeds for leafy vegetables. I purchase my seeds for western style vegies from Burpee on the Internet and select vegetables that are tolerant of hot temps (which is what we have here in the "cool" season).

  8. You can grow cherry tomatoes any time of the year but other varieties only during Thailand's coolest months as the flowers need cool night time temps to self pollinate.

It has been unusually hot this year, my 6 week old tomato seedlings are only 4-5 inches tall; squash and watermelon are doing fine.
