  1. Is there a name for this restaurant and better directions to where it is located?

He gave good directions. Middle Ring, just West of the Hang Dong Rd underpass on the left side when driving towards the Canal Road. How many pizza places do you expect to find there? :D

How will I know a 'New York Pizza' when I encounter one?

How will I know a search website when I encounter one? Oh wait, I'll know cuz it's called Google. :)

  2. donnyboy.

re ... might be a different story if coyote girls served coffee

if that happens send me the name of the place and some directions and ill start drinking coffee.

the idea should be put to all coffee shop and bar owners in chiang mai coz it would brighten up all the dead or dieing places

    enjoy pic ... dave2

ps ... they have coyote dancers ( or sort of ? ) at the magic club opposite thapae gate after 11 pm some nights ?

    Ehm, that's STH.

What/where is 'the magic club' opposite Thapae Gate?? And how is their coffee? I'll tell you one thing, the coffee at Spotlight is VERY reasonable for such an estblishment.. they have one of those Boncafe full auto espresso machines.

  3. Nice group of red shirts attacked a government minister today - article is in the BKK Post. These guys are scum, and those who support them are the same.

Ehm, check the subject title? This topic is about the Thai government's handling / mishandling of foreign relations. You're off topic.

Let's wait for The Nation's version, I'm sure it will be posted here. :)

  4. Sounds all very positive for Jomtien/Pattaya so let's continue the converation.

Wich condo buildings are the most interesting for renting a place, where I can make a deal downstairs at the lobby.

I like the buildings who have at least a swimmingpool & gym, surrounded by restaurants in the neighbourhood for easy acces when feeling hungry.

Also I want the area to be a clean one, street dogs are not a big problem but I just want to feel proud of the neighbourhood I live in.

Also I want there to be enough expats in the area, old, young, gay, straight, black, white... But I do have a little problem with the cheap charlie sexpats that would hang around my building.

I would first just go over on an extended stay, and then identify areas where you'd want to live. You really can't do this without actually being there and sensing the vibe in various areas.

  5. I think Central is generally best among the shopping malls. So short of a specialist store, I'd go there first. Also good for proper car safety seats.

    Not cheap though.

As an aside, it's not that easy to walk around with a push cart in most places in Thailand.. Side walks are a mess, many obstacles, uneven surfaces, etc. Really the only place where you can easily use one is inside a shopping mall. :) (But inside a shopping mall you just grab a shopping trolley and put the car safety seat in there. Easy. :D

So personally I would go for the combination of a baby safety seat (The ones you can carry around) and some kind of baby front-pack / back pack type carrier.

  6. Yes, Doi Kham store has them. Currently on sale. :) Very first right turn opportunity after the traffic lights when driving down Suhtep Road past the Canal Road, coming from town. (30-50 meters after the intersection)

  7. I think I've touched on this topic at length with you already; I'm not going to do it again, though the short version for anyone else is that I don't think the Red side agree on many things amongst themselves other than that they don't like the country being run by an aristocratic/military elite (as per the sign in one of the pictures). It's a coalition of convenience, where many (most) really only want Thaksin back and not much else. I've asked Red friends about this and they take the opportunistic view, that a unified opposition will be more effective. That's too bad, IMHO.

Wnnie, in reading through your posts, I seem to get the impression that in your avatar, your Kwai is the wrong color....

Wouldn't you be better served changing its color to some other. Wouldn't want readers to think you are siding with the enemy.

There are some kwai that are almost the color of dark red.

I tried that before, but went back to the original one. For these reasons:

    - There are some definitely odd-ball elements in the larger Red movement, and I don't want to associate with them.

    - It looked ridiculous. :)

Other than that, I think Loaded summed it up VERY well. That's my opinion too. If Thailand is ever to progess from a 'managed' democracy featuring weak self-serving politicians who campaign not on issues but on the merit of being top dog in their regional mafia clan, then this situation needs to change. I'm not convinced everyone in the Red movement has that goal firmly in mind.

  8. The Kantary is quite nice, but to be honest it is overpriced and thus a waste of money. If you stay short-term, you get better accommodation and services at one of the city's upscale hotels for the same price. If you stay long-term (at least 6 month) you can probably rent a beautiful house within the same budget.

He doesn't care if it's overpriced as he won't be paying. Also extremely unlikely going to get a suite at Le Meridien or Shangrila for 2k a night, and in any case, who would want to stay in a hotel for three months knocking about with tourists?

Kantary looks nice and hear they do one and two bed apartments. Nimbleheadman is good for coffee shops, nice bars and uni students and is well away from loud Europeans and Yanks :)

...but really NOT away from loud Thais.. It's a very popular pub area and is very congested on weekend nights.

Also extremely unlikely going to get a suite at Le Meridien or Shangrila for 2k a night

Well, Meridien gave us a little over 3K for a suite, and that was for 2 nights. For a three month commitment, it's worth a try.

As for walking: No, you can't walk all the way across town; it's a small town but not THAT small. Though, if they pay you 65K for accommodation in Chiang Mai then I bet a rental car (possibly including a driver) also wouldn't be much of an issue. :D There ARE meter taxis like Bangkok, but nowhere near the numbers / coverage so you can't just stand at any street and expect to flag one down. However you can call by phone, and very soon you'll have the numbers of a couple taxi drivers you can call at any time to pick you up anywhere. Not cheap by local standards, but nothing that would raise eyebrows on an expense account.

(The most common local transport option are those converted pick-up trucks that are milling around.. Those work very well once you know the lay of the land, but probably not something you want to deal with if you're on business, especially not at first. So I'd either rent a car, or pursue the 'meter' taxi route where you have a couple on call.

What part(s) of town do you need to be?

  9. I think I've touched on this topic at length with you already; I'm not going to do it again, though the short version for anyone else is that I don't think the Red side agree on many things amongst themselves other than that they don't like the country being run by an aristocratic/military elite (as per the sign in one of the pictures). 10. Is it allowed? I'll take your word for it; I admit I didn't bother with that pointless topic on this in the News forum. Absolutely no news other than an alleged name, and it went to 10 pages of posts in no time. It seemed like the perfect padded room for the Thaksin-obsessed to waste some pixels & bandwidth.

  11. I find it unnecessary when you intentional misspell Thaksin's name, after he has clarified that silly remark by whoever it was in government about his name.

But feel free to drag him into a topic yet again. I'm sure you know better what those protesters want than.. those protesters. NB: You may be talking to the wrong audience though, you have an opportunity to join their group to ensure that Thaksin is mentioned on ALL their banners! They're just poor uneducated peasants after all, if they got democracy they wouldn't know what to do with it.... Right?

  12. It would not be a bad thing if they all met with a nasty accident

Indeed; all that freedom of assembly, freedom of expression stuff. Peaceful rally at a public square, not disrupting anything...

Can't have that now can we. They should meet a horrible end!

(That IS your message right? Feel free to add to it, but I think it's entertaining so far. :)

  13. That's true; either way, they're a tiny group. I thought for a second that he was advocating to avoid a particular area because some of the people held particular views. There's no shortage of Yellow/Democrat leaning people in Chiang Mai (Town). ( Including my wife, come to think of it. :) )
