It's a Thai thing.
They'd be smiling right up to the point where they go on a mass rampage killing people who look middle class. Leave the Corolla at home, parked across the street.

To state the bloody obvious, current protests at the airport not only stifle tourism, but any kind of business in general.
(Not saying that all posters above don't realize this, but wanted to spell it out)

I started wearing white. (In my avatar at least; shift-reload if you still get the yellow one.)

On the off chance that this disinformation piece by the Nation is accurate, I hope this makes Chiang Mai the New Capital of Thailand!!
-
I'm amazed that Chamlong even admitted that he got Prem on the line trying to call off his attack dogs.

People: It's an AIR-PORT.
You ask TG for one or two 777's or 747's, load up with LOYAL police from the provinces somewhere at CNX or Khon Kae or Udon airport, and FLY them in.
No guns, just whatever riot gear they can come up with. Will be messy and time consuming, but won't require lethal force.
Honestlty, it's an AIRPORT, you don't need roads to get in there.
-
This could be a turning point for Chamlong as unlike in the past where fascist idiots get off scott free, I have a feeling he will be dealt with
I sincerely hope so.
What I don't understand though is why even a very ineffective PM can't get a couple big Thai Airways jets, load them to the brim with LOYAL up-country police at for example Chiang Mai or Khon Kaen arports, and fly them into Suvarnabhumi to kick the thugs out, requiring just MODERATE force. Don't even give them guns or other lethal weapons.
Solved, and no need for the insubordinate army or BKK police wimps.

Finally, a poll with some common sense results!

Don't know about you, but I'm registering www.lannaisaan.com , just in case
Unfortunately, Yellowland.com is taken.

If they use this clause to get out of paying then I will use that very same clause to never ever bother with that company again. No matter if I've been their customer for 30 years or other such considerations. I realize all insurers are alike, but if this happens then:
1. I go to their competitor
2. They've proven that 'travel insurance' is a scam, and I will not get it again, also not at the competing insurer.
3. Tell them to go to hel_l.

Oops, double post.

I'd pick a place to connect through where you have a plan B : CURRENTLY Phuket, Had Yai and Chiang Mai airports are open, but who can guarantee it will stay that way, AND that airlines will keep flying there.
So, I would choose KL. KL has plenty flights to those airport if they're open, but if not then KL is still close enough to Thailand to get there overland. (Bus, train, etc.)

Why with all the posting about this red shirt, yellow shirt difficulty, is there no mention of the yellow shirt that was pulled from his car and shot and killed last evening?
I can't find mention in either the Bkk Pst or The Nation..
Is someone tryihg to ignore this problem ???
Not really, I have no trouble finding news reports that are getting more and more accurate. The short version is that it was not a case of 'someone being dragged out of his car' (implying that this was merely for wearing yellow). It was part of a longer running feud between rival groups / radio stations.
Doesn't make it any less sad, needless to say. I do feel that it's necessary to set the record straight, because people could easily read it as wearing yellow (or red, for that matter) being enough to get killed.

An elected government can do more damage than a terrorist mob holding the country hostage?
Just think about what would happen to the country if the elected government rehabiliates Thaksin and makes him the Prime Minister?
Do you really have to swallow /every/ PAD hyperbole hook, line and sinker? What if. What if that would require a constitutional change that's very hard to get through parliament, not to mention the legal ramifications. Honestly, this is not something that can happen on a Thursday afternoon.
It's really sad that I have to explain this, but Thaksin was NOT on the PPP list of candidates in the last election in case you missed that. Therefore he can simply not become PM without new elections at the very least, and that's AFTER they find away around him being banned for 5 years, (admittedly under a drummed up military drafted constitution), but the point is that this is nowhere near any kind of reality.
Unfortunately at the moment I can't think of any other, non WWII comparison to make a point about Chiang Mai being safe as long as you are not yellow. That statement could easily be color-swapped and apply to Bangkok and/or the South. Either way I think we can agree that the situation is not helped by both mobs, no matter what color they wear.

> Since people like to use WW2-analogies in your crowd (even if it's more nazi-references than anything else
Reference was by Plus. He's distinctly not in my crowd. Fortunately the comment was edited out.
I don't see the benefit in continuing this type of discussion.

Whatever happened to: "Both are wrong, but I direct my main time against the one that can do most damage, the one in control, the one in government"?
An elected government can do more damage than a terrorist mob holding the country hostage? Are we on the same planet?

Sombat Tour run a bus service between Chiang Mai and Hua Hin. I believe it stops in Nakhon Patom, which is easily reached from Kanchanaburi. (Get a Thai person to) call them, the number is on their site: http://www.sombattour.com/
Or, option two would be to take the bus to Bangkok, but then find the bus that goes to the NORTHERN bus terminal (Mo Chit) This avoids having to cross all over Bangkok, as most buses from Kanchanaburi arrive at the Southern bus terminal.
Either way, expect it to be busy, as I'm sure he's not the only one needed to get somewhere with flights out...

So far PAD guards haven't killed anyone except one attacker a few months ago.
It's appaling to see how some posters here justify lynch mobs hunting down and killing people.
There ARE reports that Vibhavadi incindent was an ambush gone wrong - reds were hurling iron bars at passing PAD vehicles and got their comeuppance.
Plus, please stay on topic. This is about the airport and transport (or general situation) in the North. If you want to soapbox your political views there are plenty other topics.

The army should have no more input than to follow orders. Unfortunately, we know this not to be the case in Thailand
The army follows orders just fine, just not from the government.
Important distinction.

Thailand. The only country where a minority can try to oust a democratically elected government, ruin the economy, the markets and the image of the country and still call themselves "Democrats".
In case the PAD monkeys haven't noticed it, this airport siege is ruining the economy. No more imports, no more exports. Remember all the fresh fruits from Thailand? Forget about it. Businesses and especially investors are losing their trust, Thailand is falling and falling. This is not about Thaksin anymore. Ruining the country will not bring Thaksin back.
And again this government is not democratic elected.
So, when you and your buddies get two votes against 1 vote or half a vote for the rural poor, will you then finally be happy that the next government is democratically elected?
Unbelievable.. again, look into what PAD are all about. They are very much Against Democracy.

If you ARE a retired expat living on (modest) foreign funds, then if anything this is a good thing. Throws Thailand back years, prolonging 'cheap third world banana' status.
(I'm not in that category, I actually need Thailand to develop and prosper which by the way is also something I want Thai people to enjoy, however I wanted to point this out.)
It's rather funny (if it wasn't so sad) that a couple months ago on this very forum you often had topics going "Thailand is getting expensive, there's more and more rules, the bars are closing at midnight, screw this, I'm leaving." So... I fear in the end it remains a personal choice of where you want to live, i.e. where you feel the most happy with your quality of life vs expenses.

Try a shop called Bangkok Furniture, on the Middle Ring ,just North of the underpass with the New Sankamphaeng Road. (left hand side when driving North), or alternatively take a left turn when driving East-bound on the New Sankamphaeng Road when you get to the Middle Ring.
(Note: It's close to the intersection, if you take the underpass going north you probably exit the tunnel once already past it; not sure completely but best to not take the tunnel going North.)

Nice lake, and again, no shortage of those. But also note there's no place to just sit/hang and have some food or a drink.
Where's the place 10 minutes outside the superhighway?
Here's some pics to show I have no trouble finding scenic lakes, I have trouble finding scenic lakes with some rafts or restaurants on or near them!
Maps.google.com shows you the lakes, but it doesn't show which ones have food & drink opportunities.

As long as Thai people elect him I'd applaud it.
My only concern would be that he's obviously very divisive. A national unity government including BOTH Thaksin and the Dems I'd applaud even more.
I mean it's obvious the rural poor want Thaksin, there should not be the need to play charades with people-who-would-be-suspected-to-be-proxies.
let's get it out in the open and work for the country for a change.

You truly don't understand the support he has among the rural poor, don't you? That's fine, but disrespect may come around to bite your class one day.
