  1. I'm in and out of Nong Khai and everything Non-Thai goes with a TM6.

They are available only on a one-by-one basis, handed out individually. Asked about the E-channel which got answered by "you no Thai people". So just deal with it and keep on filling this form. Never also understand, why the passport and the TM17 (white booklet) need both to be stamped, oh well .........

  2. Interesting indeed considering the fact, that Thailand does really not know anymore where to go with all those quality tourists!

Burma (Myanmar, these days), often if not mostly looked down upon by Khon Thai, has an absolutely perfect functioning electronic visa on the web, earning them USD 50/visa which is professionally done, processed and easy to handle for visitors. The visa comes by email, to be printed out by the applicant/traveller - smooth as (Burmese) silk.

Also of possible interest is how the Cambodians and the Vietnamese deal with it; the Laotians deal with it manually still at the border posts except Pudu and Buengkan.

This backfires BIG time, travellers from Eastern Switzerland travelling all the way to Berne will kill one full day; trust me, not many Swiss will do this trip ......

  3. Maybe it is just me but this is decades too late. Like almost everything else in this  country it needs photocopies of photocopies, duly signed in BLUE (not red, green or black) certified true and correct (the cover your behind signatures) and year after year it is the same avalanche of paper which got filed by my staff for our expatriate executives. Photos of people at the desk, at home etc. were a mandatory element for the application and if the company owner would have his work permit extended it required, that the applicant agreed to hire himself for yet another year. I mean, how stupid is that; would I fire myself?

So what would you expect on a 50 minute domestic flight where they may have 15 minutes to get everything served and then collected again?  Fine dining?

Seriously, a domestic flight is so short, what do you really expect?

Exactly, that is my point. I would assume that every passenger, irrespective of time of flight, can be without food for an hour (give in 90 minutes with pre-/post boarding). If they would hand out plastic cups and serve plain drinking water from bottles and collect the cups just before landing it would be more than enough - and they would save zillions. But I am not too sure, if Khon Thai can be without food for an extended period of, say, 90 minutes ????

  5. Why dont you add catholics, christians, alcohol and pork knuckle? Because that would be in line with what those lose cannons (to be forbidden as well, by the way) brought us to! Next thing is halal toilet paper on board of Thai Smile!

They rather do away with their extreme environment-unfriendly food service of crappy food. A sandwich made of blue dough, plastic wrapped in a box, latter's latch closed with tape and kept in a thick paper bag with textile strap handles which also contains a refreshment towel, a napkin and a (specially packed by Chang) bottle of RO water.

  6. In another - normal - country they would face some extended holidays in the slammer and no chance to ever work for the Royal Thai government ever again.

Do these people higher up seriously think, that Thailand's internet runs on a North Korean philosophy, i.e. nobody outside Thailand can read, what kind of S"*ç%t is going on each and every day in the country which depends most on tourism; compared to all the neighbouring countries?

  7. Moved my residence to another province and re-registered my three vehicles. The DLT did a road worthiness test on all three vehicles (which I bought in at different days with different inspectors). All of them turned the steering wheel to the left, used a paper tape to rubble off the chassis number, the engine number, switched on the engine, switched it off again while the cars were in parked position.

All good, carry on - the health test completed and then you wonder why brakes fail. The driver to be charged for negligence though is only then acceptable, if the driver is the owner, otherwise go after the owner.

The older hands will remember such accidents in the daily papers closing the caption with "the driver fled the scene" line - nothing changed, quite obviously, in the last 30+ years I've been here ????

  8. If it is the same crap as being served domestically on TG and WE then I wish all those hungry guests good luck. Tasteless blue sandwiches with some undefinable spread, plastic foil wrapped in a small cardboard box and the lash being affixed with a scotch tape. This box, together with a small bottle of RO water by Chang, a paper napkin, refreshment towelette and a tooth pick being packed in a rather rigid paper bag with string handles. An environmental disaster befitting the content of the food box.

  9. And then they wonder why quality tourists stay away. There is not a single European country with such idiotic ideas like mandatory passport requirement which can be bent by the provincial clowns at will.
The Royal Thai Police would be much better advised to do proper road checks and hunt for all those Thai crooks which roam the Kingdom 24/7, stealing, raping and ransacking each other. But hunting Caucasians/dark skinned Southasians is of course easier simply because of their skin; racism at its very best!

  10. The red plate is a temporary registration, initially to be used to transfer cars from manufacturer to garage or between garages. The tax on red plated cars has not been paid yet by the seller of the vehicle. Thais just love red plates as it communicates a new car.

It is, by law, prohibited to leave the province of the red plate, there is a brown registration book into which each and every trip must be noted (from/to/date, engine- & chassis number etc.) as the plate can be moved anytime between any car. You're also not allowed to use them at night.

A car rental using red plates is not professional as you cannot 1st class insure such cars. The fault though is with the rental company which should put a car into circulation only once the white plates are made available by the DLT.

In your case take the fine back to the rental and deduct it from what you owe them. Next time get an official fee with an official receipt; the crooked policeman will not like it and the fine will be THB 400 (that's official) and not funny farang pricing of THB 1'000.

  11. I heard a figure of more than 100'000 cabbies roaming the capital. I also wonder if the attitude-adjustment sessions are the key.
In four out of five trips I am refused which leaves me only to leave the back left door open to the frustration of the cabbie; metres are generally not used if possible. Unless you introduce a proper penalty system with steep fines while also looking into 21st century tariffing which allows cabbies to make some money you will not get anywhere.
Caught first time for THB 1'000, second time THB 2'000 and third time license confiscation for a month. Should deal with this bunch of arrogant bastç%"ds!

  12. Living in the area I can confirm that there is presently no real need for an airport, apart from being convenient. The closest airports would be Sakon Nakhon (185kms) or Udon Thani (200kms). A bridge would facilitate matters to/from Pakxan which, in years to come, might be the overland gateway to Northeastern Laos and Northern Vietnam. But god only knows if that is a worthwile investment; for the time being I either use the Nongkhai/Thanaleng bridge or use the ferry between Buengkan and Pakxan.
